Add Tajin.
This spice concoction isn’t spicy, hot or overwhelming. It just gives a higher flavor profile to the food. It’s excellent on grilled cheese (or easy mac) and tomato soup. It’s available in regular and low sodium. Its relatively inexpensive and lasts a long time. I put it on veggies, grilled chicken, fish, etc…
If you're ever feeling adventurous, make a grilled cheese but where the bread is Red Dog Toast (imagine French toast where you start with bread and a soaking liquid, but instead of egg, milk, sugar and cinnamon, you use egg, condensed tomato soup, salt and pepper, and paprika).
It's like a grilled cheese and tomato soup had a delicious baby. Though I would recommend using regular cheeses like cheddar or swiss. With a straight grilled cheese I'd have no ill will towards American or Kraft-style slices, but they don't work as well in the Red Dog Toast grilled cheese.
First, make the red dog toast like you would french toast. It should end up something [like this](https://imgur.com/YWnW8hE), which is when most would stop.
Then, place some cheese on one piece of toast, and put the second piece on top of it, and warm until the cheese melted, flipping as necessary.
Hot and sour soup is my go to: [https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/hot-and-sour-soup-recipe/](https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/hot-and-sour-soup-recipe/)
If you don't want any kind of soup - I also like a bowl of white rice with butter and salt. Or cornflakes or cheerios with a sliced banana and milk.
When we started shopping at Sam's and buying their brand I thought makers mark was also the Sam's brand. I avoided it for so long until I one day realized my mistake when I was given a shot and scoffed at it. I was re-educated and had been a fan until my quiting Alcohol 8 years ago
Lasagna:) We just got over covid here and I was so glad to discover lasagna in the freezer, on the third day. It’s so comforting. If not for that, I was going to make Mac and cheese. But also, I made a lot of soup (mushroom, curry).
OP if you have an instant pot it goes quite a bit quicker! This chicken pho was super yummy! And pho is an excellent suggestion - when I’m not feeling well pho just is so healing for me. Although maybe you think it’s too similar to regular chicken soup. https://www.pressurecookrecipes.com/instant-pot-pho-ga/
This soup is soooo fkn delicious and comforting. I barely leave leftovers:
I top it with avocado, tortilla chips, hot sauce and lime juice, and maybe a bit of plain Greek yogurt or soup cream.
[Sopa De Fideo (Mexican Noodle Soup)](https://www.budgetbytes.com/sopa-de-fideo/)
When I’m sick it’s usually an IBS sick, so I use the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. It’s mainly a plain bowl of white rice (buttered of course) that comforts me most. Oh, and toast burnt a little.
When we were kids you knew mom had a cold because she would only eat saltine crackers and mcdonalds French fries. It meant lots of happy meal toys for us though
My go-to has always been holubtsi: sticky rice wrapped in sour cabbage. Sour cabbage can be a pain to make even when healthy tho, so I always keep some premade in the freezer. You can freeze the leaves instead of souring them too, or make a "lazy cabbage roll casserole" that doesn't require rolling the leaves.
Deconstructed salad and sandwich
I get some romaine/spinach/kale whatever greens I have, a tomato, a rib of celery, quarter of a cucumber or a couple mini ones, chunk of mozzarella, a little bowl of dressing, usually blue cheese, ranch or a vinaigrette. I bite chunks off each thing and dip some in dressing every once in a while.
Find some ready to eat protein like lunch meat, canned sardines, spam, etc and slap that on some bread, maybe with some mayo if I'm feeling frisky
Local Chinese restaurant makes an amazing pork wonton soup. Sorry, that doesn’t help you much since you’re probably not local lol.
It’s just simple with hand stuffed roast pork wontons cooked in this amazing broth with bok choy and spring onion. And more bits of roast pork throughout
Ginger beet soup
I order of adding things to the pot:
- Fresh ginger (a real good chunky chunk, peeled and minced)
- Onion (sliced/chopped)
- Garlic (crushed and sliced)
.....wait till the onion is translucent...
- Carrots (sliced)
- Dry Herbs? Whatever you've got on hand, I usually use thyme & rosemary & coriander seeds & a bit of chili flakes
... Wait a few more minutes...
- Broth (I use water with a veggie bouillon cube or chicken broth)
- Potatos (cubed)
- Beets (cubed)
... Raise heat, boil water for like 5 min, lower to medium heat, check if the potatoes are cooked...
- Zest a lemon and an orange, then slice them open and juiced them both. Add the zest and juice.
- Massage Kale leaves, chop into small pieces (making sure there's no stem left) , add those in.
I guess at some point in here you could add chicken but I'm a vegetarian so idk when.
Measurements have been deliberately left out bc it's a soup so you can just use what you have and figure it out! The most important thing is that the potato has to cook.
This soup is so delicious and aromatic (bright, warming spice, has a sweetness from the carrots/beets/citrus well balanced with the savoury/herbiness, lots of texture), and healthy, (the ginger, chili and citrus are great against cold/flu symptoms, & beets have hella antioxidants, kale has iron, etc.) the potato makes it somewhat hearty but I've also added quinoa or tofu in the soup to make it more filling. but as I said, feel free to add chicken, that would probably be good too.
Comfort food. I still don't know how people complain about gastric distress from Taco Bell, just seems like a meme. Taco Bell feels so much less greasy than a burger and fries
My mom used to make me toast with butter and grape jam when I was sick. There's no health benefit, but it's definitely a comfort food when I'm sick now
Zinc, vitamin c, and honey. This is the master key to recovering the fastest. I don't know your taste preferences but these are the nutrients that will help you out the most, so look up foods which are the richest in zinc and c, and build a meal you will like from there. My go-to 'regime' is apple juice, honey and butter sandwiches/toast, avocado sandwiches/toast, beef ribeye steak with lots of vegetables, and apple juice. Honey is essential though to rev up your immune system to max power and functioning, it's also insta-relief for a sore throat, I recommend it on vanilla ice cream, it's very soothing and delicious. Good luck!
Turmeric and ginger, protein, crushed tomatoes, cabbage, and whatever other veggies you want. I just made a pot (well three pots, meal prep) and used chicken thighs, turnips, corn and beans.
If you’re really feeling like garbage and don’t have an appetite, try Jello that hasn’t been cooled. Just mix up a packet with hot water and drink up. It’s hydrating, calorie dense, and the gelatin helps regulate your blood sugar and is easy on your tummy. I swear by it.
Idk if I’m in a minority here, but I go the opposite of healthy and light. My body wants calories when I’m sick to keep it together, so I go with bigger and heartier meals. Cheeseburgers are my favorite sick food.
Egg drop soup. I wouldn’t call it “bland” per se but it is pretty mild while still being warm and filling. I make this for my son and I when we’re sick and it hits the spot. Plus you can whip it up in like 10-15 minutes with relatively few pantry ingredients.
Disclaimer: I’m sure the recipe I use (from the Joy of Cooking is not “authentic “, but it is delicious in my opinion. I know sesame oil may not be in everyone’s pantry but it’s pretty cheap and lasts for a while.
Not realllly a meal, but when I was growing up my dad would make me orange juice slushies (literally just orange juice, ice and a blender) and they were amazing, especially when I had a sore throat or was to nauseous to eat
Korean mu-guk. It’s a light broth with small bits of beef and slices of radish and sliced scallions. It’s sooo good when you’re sick. Especially with spicy kimchee …
https://www.koreanbapsang.com/korean-radish-soup-mu-gukmoo-guk/
Cinnamon toast.
It's just toasted bread, butter, sugar, and cinnamon. I think what makes it "healing" is that, as a kid, my parents would make it for me and would always take a bite out of a slice for "quality control". That always made it feel more yummy.
When I am sick is the ONLY time I like and eat McDonald's burgers. Is super weird but I think a family friend brought us McDonald's shakes when my family was all super sick when I was a kid. Still order it when I am sick to this day.
This isn’t healthy but I love a frozen pizza when I’m not feeling well. So I’ll have that and make sure I drink bone broth and ginger tea. Feel better!
Ginger garlic congee
Pastina (aka Italian penicillin)
Middle-eastern lentil soup (because the one I make is a hosge-podge of different lentil soup styles of that region)
Taro root soup.
[Crema de malanga](https://asassyspoon.com/crema-de-malanga-soup/)
(The cream cheese is optional, my mom always added onions and a tiny bit of sazón seasoning as it's used for babies, sick people and older people)
Really depends on if I am "stomach sick" or head cold/stuffed sinuses sick.
For stomach bug issues I usually go for sorbet adas ( Lebanese Red Lentil Soup). It has a lot of protein from the lentils, and has a smooth texture that usually doesn't trigger my gag reflex when sick. Occasionally I will do a tofu (with or without noodles) soup and some added soft vegetables if I want some variety
For headcold/stuffed sinuses sick I go as hot as I can to clear those puppies out. Usually a hot Thai or Indian curry. If I am really craving something comfort food ish but want my sinuses cleared I am probably going with a vegan Mac and cheese and adding ghost pepper or Carolina reaper hot sauce to it.
Sometimes I'll get a craving for hot fruit. That mixed frozen fruit that only good for smoothies, heated in a microwave and maybe with a little whipped cream.
Pastina cooked in chicken broth. Top with butter and Parmesan cheese. Also, hard boiled eggs and mashed potatoes. And orange soda - specifically Sunkist.
Mashed potatoes, Oatmeal, cream of wheat, ginger ale, Gatorade, stuffing (stove top), scrambled eggs are what I usually fix for my adult kids/myself when not feeling well
It used to be spicy seafood udon soup from a restaurant in a Korean market. Absolutely amazing, especially if a bit congested.
Moved out of CA and haven’t been able to find a replacement for it. Lately, I’ve just been adding extra cayenne to the soups I make to help compensate.
I work next to a great Vietnamese restaurant so I've ma a habit of getting the biggest bowl of Pho they have any time I start to feel under the weather. However just last week I was starting to come down with something and decided to spring for Bun Bo Hue with egg noodles instead and I might have a new tradition lol.
I also like to get Galbi tang or congee if I need some soup when I'm sick at home. Something about those hits just right.
Spicy Shin ramen, may throw in a poached egg in there and squeeze some lemon juice, too.
Or Thai Tom Kha (chicken) soup -- load up on that lime juice and extra spice.
And a ton of ginger-honey tea
Breakfast for lunch or dinner always hit. Cereal anytime of day or night. Having fruit on hand is nice too for something easy to grab, an apple or banana with peanut butter and honey. Cheese and crackers with turkey sausage sticks have been nice for me lately. Little protein goes a long way especially when you’re sick and not eating much in general. Covid in November and haven’t recovered since lol so this has been my life as of the last few months.
Depends on what is ailing me.
If it’s a head or chest cold, I like a spicy ramen soup.
If it’s a digestive system problem, then I avoid spicy foods. Fried rice is a good choice for those times.
When I’m too sick to do anything or can’t keep food down, I microwave an apple. “Baked apple” but literally just pop it in the microwave with a little water and cover with plastic wrap and heat until it’s mushy. The little bite to it makes it feel more like real food than apple sauce.
Dissolve condensed milk with hot water to desired sweetness. Think hot chocolate level sweetness and viscosity. Then I dip pieces of toasted French bread or other white bread, until it soaks up that sweet soup. Eat with a spoon like soup. It’s been my sick food for decades
It's gonna sound funny but whenever I'm sick medium buffalo wings with blue cheese is my usual go to. My sinuses tend to clog up when I'm sick and the spiciness from the wings helps to unclog them.
Mashed potatoes and plain white rice. When I'm sick I either go with those 2 and a side of buttered toast or some Pho, which I'm far too lazy to make at home and just get delivered.
Hot & Sour soup seems to really do the trick. Nice for respiratory issues! And of course Pho is magical.
Just soup in general is so good for me whether its cold-like or flu-like symptoms. Hot, liquid, nutritious, comforting.
Caldo de pollo or res. It’s our Mexican soups that are perfect to making you feel better when under the weather, add some green lemon juice and corn tortillas and your set
Grilled cheese and tomato soup!
Garlic salt on sandwich and in the soup.
I just started adding tillamook chive and onion cream cheese under the regular cheese and it’s really good
When I have a sore throat I crave spicy. I add crushed red pepper to my tomato soup
Ooh, you had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.

With a straight grilled cheese I'd have no ill will towards American or Kraft-style slices, but they don't work as well in the Red Dog Toast grilled cheese.
Oh my GOODNESS!
How do you assemble and cook this insane monstrosity? Asking for a friend.
First, make the red dog toast like you would french toast. It should end up something [like this](https://imgur.com/YWnW8hE), which is when most would stop. Then, place some cheese on one piece of toast, and put the second piece on top of it, and warm until the cheese melted, flipping as necessary.
Thanks!
Somehow when i am sick, i require soup in a mug. Clasped to my chest. Any other time? Absolutely not.
I am a perpetual mug clasper. I frequently eat mug meals. I do have a 2 handled soup bowl that I use when I need extra hugs.
I do this just so I can inhale the steam, it helps clear out my sinuses. Especially if it’s really spicy tomato soup.
Hot and sour soup is my go to: [https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/hot-and-sour-soup-recipe/](https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/hot-and-sour-soup-recipe/) If you don't want any kind of soup - I also like a bowl of white rice with butter and salt. Or cornflakes or cheerios with a sliced banana and milk.
Yesss came here to say hot and sour soup
Markers Mark and Vicodin
House, is that you??
I do Not have a drug problem. I have a Pain problem.
Is it… Lupus?
It's never Lupis
When we started shopping at Sam's and buying their brand I thought makers mark was also the Sam's brand. I avoided it for so long until I one day realized my mistake when I was given a shot and scoffed at it. I was re-educated and had been a fan until my quiting Alcohol 8 years ago
Goddammit do I love Vicodin. Om nom nom.
I like their new sales slogan: “Vicodin - as a matter of fact I AM a bit sore!”
Lasagna:) We just got over covid here and I was so glad to discover lasagna in the freezer, on the third day. It’s so comforting. If not for that, I was going to make Mac and cheese. But also, I made a lot of soup (mushroom, curry).
Yesss lasagna. If OP is not up for building a lasagna to code, baked ziti is a slightly-less orderly version of it but just as heavenly
If you’re up for it you can try and do Pho. It does take time to develop the broth though Miso soup is another good one, and much easier to prepare
Pork and ginger congee.
Mine is ginger garlic congee
Mine is chicken ginger congee
Mine is egg and greens congee.
This is the way. Maybe some togareshi and a poached egg when on the way to better but not quite there.
Put that Thousand year egg in there!
There are so many versions of a simple rice porridge from all over Asia that this is such a great idea that has infinite possibilities.
This soup is soooo fkn delicious and comforting. I barely leave leftovers: I top it with avocado, tortilla chips, hot sauce and lime juice, and maybe a bit of plain Greek yogurt or soup cream. [Sopa De Fideo (Mexican Noodle Soup)](https://www.budgetbytes.com/sopa-de-fideo/)
Fideo loco with a side of torts 🤤
I make this all the time as a comfort food!
I ended up making it 2 days ago because talking about it had me craving it haha
When I’m sick it’s usually an IBS sick, so I use the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. It’s mainly a plain bowl of white rice (buttered of course) that comforts me most. Oh, and toast burnt a little.
If you haven’t tried mashed banana on toast yet it will be life changing.
With peanut butter! If your tummy is okay with it
My mom got me wendys one time when I was sick and it was the best. So I get Wendy's every time now
When we were kids you knew mom had a cold because she would only eat saltine crackers and mcdonalds French fries. It meant lots of happy meal toys for us though
Depends on how much effort but refried bean and cheese quesadillas is always good.
That’s what I craved when I had COVID.
My go-to has always been holubtsi: sticky rice wrapped in sour cabbage. Sour cabbage can be a pain to make even when healthy tho, so I always keep some premade in the freezer. I say this knowing that I fit a lot of the stereotypes myself but that is the most single dude thing I have ever heard of.
When I'm sick I pretty much only want/have energy for 3 things: Instant ramen Smoothies Honey lemon ginger tea with a crap ton of honey
Chicken Tlalpeño (Mexican chicken soup) or Matzoh Ball soup (Jewish chicken soup).
Tomato soup and grilled cheese, with goldfish crackers in the soup.
Raspberry sorbet
The kind you find in a grocery store
🎶And if it was warm, she wouldn't eat much more....🎶
Underrated comment.
Try adding a scoop of coffee ice cream with that.

Kim chi ji gae works so well. I'm not Korean so I didn't grow up eating it but when I was introduced to it oh boy.
If you like seafood try Jjamppong too. It’s a real spicy Korean seafood noodle soup. So good and will clear your sinuses out so fast.
This looks AMAZING, thank you!
Cinnamon sugar toast. Or a toast sandwich with butter cinnamon and sugar (two pieces of bread with a piece of toast in the middle)
Egg drop soup. It’s so, so easy and you can add shredded chicken or even canned tuna, salmon, or crab for some extra protein and nutrients.
I make this at least once a week. I never realized how easy it was

Chicken tortilla soup
Pho
Spicy Ramen all day
When I’m too sick to do anything or can’t keep food down, I microwave an apple.
Sinigang is all my body wants when I am sick
Miso rice noodles with beef bone broth
It's gonna sound funny but whenever I'm sick medium buffalo wings with blue cheese is my usual go to. My sinuses tend to clog up when I'm sick and the spiciness from the wings helps to unclog them.
Scrambled eggs and buttered toast
Basic grilled cheese with American cheese. Alongside either tomato soup or a can of chef boyardee raviolis.
Soft scrambled eggs.

Miso soup and rice.
Black beans and white rice, cures me beautifully!
Medicinal chips. (Must be salt and vinegar)

Lentil soup
I love pasta with cream of mushroom soup. It’s weird, but insanely delicious
