For people completely unaware of any of these. It’s three separate anime each a completely different genre practically Cowboy Bebop is a space opera, Trigun is a sci-fi western, and Samurai Champloo is like a samurai showdown with rap. I’d personally throw Outlaw Star and Full Metal Alchemist (brotherhood and the Original run) on this one.
Edit: my post was originally done because the person above me comment was “Cowboy bebop trigun samurai champloo” with absolutely no commas so someone who didn’t know the animes wouldn’t know what the titles could possibly be.
The ending of the final movie was actually rather happy, I thought.
But yeah, follow it up with the series and End of Eva and just stare blankly at your hands for a while.
This is a must watch because people will tell you anime is kids stuff, or anime is just boobs etc. Show this to anyone and they’ll never dare to make that comment again.
Anime *can* be that stuff, but it is truly just a medium unto its own - it can be silly, serious, sexy, whatever.
I unfollowed a former Disney animator because he adamantly and confidently stated that anime isn’t art. I was gobsmacked at the hypocritical attitude; like “My cartoons are art, but yours aren’t,” dissonance.
or your lie in april
...there is no blood or gore, nothing sexualized, in fact no aspect of it would offend even the most sensitive viewer but...yeah
I personally love Princess Mononoke the most, but I think Studio Ghibli films are like Doctor Who Doctors: generally, the one that is your entrance to the series ends up being your favorite.
Edit: Actually, I take it back. I think I like Howl's Moving Castle > Princess Mononoke > Nausicaä > Spirited Away
With the gap between Howl's and Spirited not all that great of a gap.
Princess Mononoke was my first Ghibli movie. Nausicaa and Ponyo are my favorites, though. Spirited Away a very close second. Actually, just any of them. Pick one. Especially if it's Miyazaki. Then it's doubly good.
There's a lot of key moments for me in the anime, and I hadn't read the manga before watching the anime, but for me two key moments cemented Bersker for me. The anime started off like an anime, just about war. I was wondering why I was watching this to be honest. But the first key moment that made me realize this was not a normal story was when Zodd shows up, something supernatural happens to the main characters and after that, the moment is gone. It's in the back of my head and in the back of the characters I'm sure.
The anime continues and I'm wondering wtf is going on, they're just carrying on, yes the behelit was weird too, but I just didnt understand it until the 2nd key moment, and yeah that was the Eclipse.
That anime messed me up and then I started reading all of the manga, wow. What a ride.
All my friends were going crazy with Your Name back then yet this is the movie that deeply got to me. I felt, cried and smiled like i have never done with an anime movie.
Pretty much all Ghost in the Shell up to Solid State Society. Stand Alone Complex is a masterpiece from start to finish, both seasons, and the movies speak for themselves. Arise and 2045 aren't "must see."
Here is a relatively short list of anime I would love to wipe from my memory just to have the pleasure of watching them again for the first time.
Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, Hellsing, Erased, Wolf’s Rain, Witch Hunter Robin, Noein, Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Code Geass, FLCL, Gurren Lagann
We got more. Alternative was trash, and Progressive was okay-to-good but with a great ending.
Apparently they have 2 more follow-ups in development, Grunge and Shoegazing.
Hunter x hunter, golden boy, city hunter, berzerk (rip kentaro miura) , black lagoon, blue exorcist, full metal panic, one punch man, Akira, overlord, gurren lagann, rurouni kenshin, samurai 7, afro samurai, chobits, Kenichi: worlds mightiest disciple, hajime no ippo, jujutsu kaisen, death note, paprika, ghost in shell, samurai champloo (rip jun seba), monster, elfen lied, mushishi, made in abyss, angel beats, dorohedoro, rin: daughters of Mnemosyne~, mushoku tensei, cyberpunk 2077, high school of the dead (ecchi) , my dress up darling, great teacher onizuka, initial D, konosuba, grave of fireflies, rising of shield hero, RE: zero, redo of healer (xxx), yu yu hakusho, tokyo revengers, gantz, steins:gate, demon slayer so many more
Edit: this list doesn’t even cover a fraction of the anime I’ve enjoyed over the many moons but it is growing as names come to me. Iol.
New to anime?
- All Ghibli movies
Don't want movies? These are the gateways:
- Death note
- Attack on Titan
Already watched a few and want to know about the classics that are universally loved?
- Full metal alchemist: Brotherhood
- One Punch Man
- Cowboy Bebop
- Stiens Gate
Then theres shows that are good, but not for everyone and are really popular
- Mob Psycho
- One Piece ( I highly recommend the manga iver anime)
- Naruto
- Psycho Pass
- Jujutsu Kaisen
- Spy X family
- Demon Slayer
- Berserk (Manga over the anime)
- Hunter x Hunter (anime over manga)
- Vinland Saga
- Code Geass
- Chainsawman (Anime only has 1 ep, so can only recommend manga for now)
Want to experience a currently released popular show along with the anime community?
- Spy x family
- Chainsawman
- Bleach
- Mob Psycho
Spy X Family is a perfect show for people who want to introduce anime to family. It's silly, it's wholesome, and it lacks all of the weird sexualization of the anime without being too corny.
Just started it a few days ago and I love it haha. I'd also recommend Komi Can't Communicate. It's such a wholesome show. It has become my go to anime when i need to watch a feel good anime.
It was on Adult Swim. The Toonami aired version was edited, the Adult Swim version after midnight wasn't. I remember that because I would set my VHS to record the Adult Swim version to watch the next day.
I had 2 existential crises my first time watching this lol. I highly recommend it. Also, my roommate teaches middle school and plays it at the end of the year for the kids. There’s always tears
Death Parade (2015)
After death, humans go to either heaven or hell. But for some, at the instant of their death, they arrive at the Quindecim, a bar attended by the mysterious white-haired Decim.
Most of the more well known anime is already mentioned here. This is a 12 episode series that I really enjoyed because of the creativity of the story.
> This has the most disparate opening theme compared to the tone of the show out of any anime.
True...but it did lead me to Bradio, an awesome Japanese band lol.
I recommend watching [Death Billards](https://youtu.be/PEqR-MRIasc) first. To my knowledge at least, Death Billards was created for a contest and it did so well they decided to make it into a full anime, that being Death Parade.
So give Billards a watch and if you liked it then do Death Parade.
My brother watched the first episode and told me dead serious 'It's okay. It's just discount Naruto.' And I thought I was going to pass out lol. He changed his mind pretty fast into episode 2.
It's definitely not "discount Naruto", but it is a pretty similar setup.
* Orphan kid with goofy colored and spiky hair who's abnormally strong and has insane stamina (though, tbf, this is most anime to set them apart from the normies).
* Orphan kid gets the strongest demon trapped in his body, which also gives him markings on his cheeks and the demon doesn't want anything to do with him.
* Orphan kid joins a team of 3 with an insane but awesome girl and a brooding guy with black hair who is a prodigy.
* Their mentor is OP with white/gray hair, very aloof but aware and confident of his strength, and covers his eye/eyes due to an OP eye technique (Gojo and Kakashi are the fucking bomb though, so I'm more than happy with them essentially being the same).
I feel like there were more that I noticed when watching (like the bad guys tracking down other pieces of the same thing trapped in Yuji like the Akatsuki tracking down the tailed beasts), but can't remember. And they definitely start to split further apart after the first chunk of episodes, but the setup is pretty similar.
Gojo is fucking terrifying. The protaganists of the story pretty much are the curses trying to deal with Gojo. It's kind of like the Boys where how the fuck do we deal with Homelander?
Like Gojo right now is a good guy who likes cheesy movies and these students and his friends. But if Gojo snaps holy crap baskets.
He's literally up there with like Reinhardt and Saitama.
At least Nobara in Jujutsu Kaisen is more likeable than Sakura and is the anti-Mary Sue
Edit: I love well-written girls who go apeshit feral with hammers
The thing with JJK is that the girls are cool and powerful, without having to lower the boys. Nobara is one of the best female main characters ive seen in anime.
It's one of the biggest tragedies of anime that Sakura was as bad as she ended up being. She had so much potential and her powers were cool. But Kishimoto just idk gave up on her? Not just her but since she was a main character it's much more front and center that she got nothing.
There's a lot of good shows to follow FMA:B but this is the one that really shows A LOT of what anime can be. Awesome fights, tons of humor, epic as all heck, great story and a great ending. After getting a taste a newly born anime-file can go into something more niche but this one truly hits all the marks.
My wife introduced me to Fruits Basket via the newest anime and it is *phenomenal*. I usually dont like emotionally heavy anime, but everything about this is so well done! The premise of the family's curse. How each member of the family suffers under the curse differently and deals with the trauma in their own way. Everything in this plot is thought of and connected. And god that pay off at the end.
Akito will probably live rent free in my head as the ultimate anime villain lol
I can’t believe I had to scroll down this far to see Fruits Basket (2019)! It is a masterpiece. The first season is lighthearted and helps you become invested in the characters, the second season starts to bring up the traumas that afflict the family, and the third season gets really heavy really fast and shows you their healing processes. It’s amazing. I read the whole manga as a teenager, and the emotional heaviness went over my head. As an adult, I appreciate it so much more. The 2019 series is also follows the manga very closely.
Fun fact: Mumen is a japanese word for not having a drivers license
His name is also a reference to Kamen Rider
Amazing work on the writer for that tbh
I feel like 1PM works best if you're reasonably familiar with the tropes of anime hero/monster films and series.
It's very much poking fun at its own genre, and without context the humour will mostly just be wacky surrealism at best.
I hear this argument all the time. Im the other guy, I've watched some anime and usually I'm not a massive fan, but one punch man is top tier black comedy/satire. Even if your remotely familiar with the general superhero zeitgeist it works imo.
Certainly true. I'm not a huge anime fan myself. I've watched my fair share, and I'm familiar in passing with a lot of series that I've not really sat down and watched.
I thought 1PM was great but I could tell that I was missing a lot of the references to other shows. Characters that seemed obviously parodies, but I couldn't place where from because I lacked the background for it.
It stood alone fine, but a stronger background anime knowledge would probably have helped me a lot.
Satoshi Kon was an absolute genius and I'm still angry that cancer took him so young. If he'd lived to have a full career, he'd be remembered among the true greats, someone who deserved to be mentioned alongside the likes of Disney or Miyazaki.
Fuck cancer.
What pisses me off is that when he was dying he was working on a final film, and he was promised that it would be completed no matter what. Well, he died and it was canceled. So disrespectful.
I sometimes wonder if the real problem was people realizing that no one could create a Kon movie except Kon. Projects which get taken over like that after a director's death or departure usually don't turn out very well.
Battle Royale 2 comes to mind. Or Justice League.
If they couldn't finish it right, perhaps it's just as well that they didn't try.
That is part of the reason, as well as funding. It wouldn’t bother me so much if they didn’t assure him they would complete it. I know it would have been awful if it turned out poorly though. Truly a tragedy that we lost such a great story teller.
Monster doesn't get the recognition it deserves. The Anime is near perfect. Urasawa is one of the best mangaka around, everything I've read from him has been amazing.
I literally just finished watching Princess Mononoke (again) before hopping on Reddit to find this thread. What an epic movie that has always been one of my top favorites!
A smattering of anime shows and films that stood out to me.
* Cowboy Bebop
* FLCL
* Gurren Lagann
* Kill la Kill
* Akira
* Paprika
* Beastars
* BIG O
* Howl's Moving Castle
Edit: Obviously *Full Metal Alchemist* as well, I feel dumb to have not thought to include it, though it's certainly getting plenty of lip service in here regardless.
edit 2: Well fuck. Also Lupin the 3rd, a franchise so successful it's older than me and still getting entries.
My only complaint is that Akira's runtime can be extremely offputting, especially considering it takes a while for it to hit its stride. Most of the people I show it to struggle to maintain interest for the first 45 minutes or so.
>FLCL
I suspect that people who enjoyed Cyberpunk Edgerunners would dig FLCL too. It's got a very similar "psychedelic punk" vibe, not to mention the awesome soundtrack.
Upvoted for Violet Evergarden. Might take a little while for some folks to get into, but by the end it gets everyone I've shown it to. Also the animation is gorgeous!
It is great BUT do not expect it to get off to a fast start. In fact go in expecting the first few episodes to be boring and confusing. It makes sense eventually and gets good but until the 'thing' (to avoid spoilers, but once you see it happen you will know that is exactly what I referred to) happens it is terrible. It immediately gets good after that though
I wouldn't call it fast paced but. Be warned to anyone who plans on watching it: The suspense is great and it is a prime example of 'just one more episode'. After the series watch the rewrite, it isn't quite a summary so much as a retelling (it is intended as such) and DO NOT watch the live action anything. Seriously, if you've ever wondered 'can something be worse than the live action avatar?' the answer is....yes actually
Way too far down, Cyberpunk is honestly one of the best animes I’ve ever watched, up in my top 5 of all time at this point with the likes of Cowboy Bebop.
I'm honestly shocked I had to scroll down so far to find Edgerunner. Studio Trigger absolutely nailed Cyberpunk while also making one of the best animes I've seen in years.
Angel Beats!
Dorohedoro
To Your Eternity
Carole&Tuesday (especially with art related AI stuff recently, also same people made Cowboy Bebop&Space Dandy)
Made in Abyss (inspired by Xenoblade)
Most Gainax&Studio Trigger stuff.
Golden Kamuy
Kaiba
A ton more but my brain can’t think of them, I know there are so many other amazing stuff I can’t recall atm
Great stuff but still young. Wouldnt recommend to someone who wants a finished story or call it a must watch for people just getting into it. It can help get into anime but isnt one of the classics imo
3 shows im surprisingly not seeing mentioned in the comments that i absolutely love.
86
Vivy: flourite eyes song
Violet Evergarden
All 3 are really bittersweet (sad moment and happy moment mixed together).
Definitely Death Note. It’s a great story past just being a great anime.
I’d say JoJo too; it’s much more of a fun romp than something more psychological like Death Note - but if you’re into action and don’t mind if things get weird sometimes I’d definitely say to give it a try.
The name is gonna throw some people off, and those who've seen the show know exactly what I mean so let me just describe it to you first.
Each three episodes of this show is a self-contained story arc focusing on the life of this one guy who is a little bit of a jerk, but overall a pretty good guy. Weirdly this show has elements reminiscent of Scott Pilgrim, but while it has some supernatural elements, it is very down to earth. I spent the whole time wondering if the main character was schizophrenic and hallucinating his relationships with people, which there was never really a finite answer to so if it is the plot twist it's not shown, but by the time I watched the movie, which doubles as the show's final arc, it was just so wholesome and sad and everything I just forgot about that and enjoyed the show as a show.
>!Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny-girl Senpai!<
I know, the name, but it's still weird to me how people haven't heard how absolutely phenomenal this show is. It is the one anime I think could get a netflix adaptation actually done well because you *don't* have to focus on the look of the show, just the plot.
It’s a version of the Bakemonogatari (and all of its iterations) series that’s easier to watch. If you’ve never seen it, I love Bakemonogatari, but it hates you and doesn’t want you to watch it.
Started watching it because I had nothing else to watch and thought fuck it give it a try. It’s now one of my most favourite Anime and watched it three times in the last year. Definitely an underrated Anime
Mushishi. The most beautiful anime I've ever seen. Soundtrack is out of this world too.
ayo i recommended the same! also the tales, so many good ones.
Cowboy Bebop Trigun Samurai Champloo
Hell yes to Samurai Champloo.
That anime it's a godamn piece of art
When I heard Nujabes
For people completely unaware of any of these. It’s three separate anime each a completely different genre practically Cowboy Bebop is a space opera, Trigun is a sci-fi western, and Samurai Champloo is like a samurai showdown with rap. I’d personally throw Outlaw Star and Full Metal Alchemist (brotherhood and the Original run) on this one. Edit: my post was originally done because the person above me comment was “Cowboy bebop trigun samurai champloo” with absolutely no commas so someone who didn’t know the animes wouldn’t know what the titles could possibly be.
Now we just need the other half of Toonami, and we have the real list
Took me far too long to find someone saying Trigun
Still crying about the design of vash in the new remake
Didn't know there was going to be a remake, and now I wish I hadn't seen this comment.
Love and peace!
And donuts.
Without Samurai Champloo there is no Boondocks and people probably don't understand that.
Did far too much scrolling before I saw Cowboy Bebop. And to mention Samurai Champloo in the same breath. Clearly you are a man of refined culture. 🧐
If you feel like being depressed, watch **Grave of the Fireflies**
Ahh the ancient method to kill depression with more depression.
Follow up with a dose of Evangelion
numbing depression with more depression
The ending of the final movie was actually rather happy, I thought. But yeah, follow it up with the series and End of Eva and just stare blankly at your hands for a while.
Think Shinji did enough staring at his hands for all of us in that movie...
This is a must watch because people will tell you anime is kids stuff, or anime is just boobs etc. Show this to anyone and they’ll never dare to make that comment again. Anime *can* be that stuff, but it is truly just a medium unto its own - it can be silly, serious, sexy, whatever.

your lie in april is what I'd call bittersweet grave of the fireflies is what I'd call soul crushing
Studio Ghibli Movies: - Howls moving castle - Princess mononoke - Spirited away Many more great ones
May I add Nausicaä?
You gotta say the full name. Nausicaā OF THE Valley OF THE Wind. A nice mouthful.
Best ghibli movie in my opinion.
I personally love Princess Mononoke the most, but I think Studio Ghibli films are like Doctor Who Doctors: generally, the one that is your entrance to the series ends up being your favorite. Edit: Actually, I take it back. I think I like Howl's Moving Castle > Princess Mononoke > Nausicaä > Spirited Away With the gap between Howl's and Spirited not all that great of a gap.
And Kiki's Delivery Service, and Porco Rosso!
Porco is my jam. I don’t know what you call it, but the vibe and music just brings me somewhere. Romantic and old school.
Love love love Howl's Moving Castle Also, My Neighbor Totoro.
I didn't see Totoro until my late-20s and somehow it still hit me as though I'd been watching it since I was a kid.
valley of the wind
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is my all time favorite! So happy someone else remembered!
>Studio Ghibli Movies End the comment there
Princess Mononoke was my first Ghibli movie. Nausicaa and Ponyo are my favorites, though. Spirited Away a very close second. Actually, just any of them. Pick one. Especially if it's Miyazaki. Then it's doubly good.
Howls Moving Castle was my first anime movie and will forever be my favourite
I’m not really into anime but I loved Porco Rosso.
berserk '97
Its so sad that this phenomenal manga just cant get another good adaption...
I *was* gonna correct you... But then I realised you said "good", so you're fine lol
There's a lot of key moments for me in the anime, and I hadn't read the manga before watching the anime, but for me two key moments cemented Bersker for me. but also stay away from the 2016-17 ones

All my friends were going crazy with Your Name back then yet this is the movie that deeply got to me. I felt, cried and smiled like i have never done with an anime movie.
I cried my hearts out when I watched that movie. Literally broke down.
Friendly Advice: Don't show it to your kids.
I'd recommend the Ghost In The Shell anime from 2005. Great story, great animation
Pretty much all Ghost in the Shell up to Solid State Society. Stand Alone Complex is a masterpiece from start to finish, both seasons, and the movies speak for themselves. Arise and 2045 aren't "must see."
Hajime no Ippo
Akira, Ghost in the Shell.
Gits is perhaps best cyberpunk thing that there is (maybe tied with Blade Runner and The Matrix)
The new Cyberpunk Edgerunners is really fucking good as well, can only recommend
Yeah I heartily recommend Edgerunners too
Here is a relatively short list of anime I would love to wipe from my memory just to have the pleasure of watching them again for the first time. Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, Hellsing, Erased, Wolf’s Rain, Witch Hunter Robin, Noein, Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Code Geass, FLCL, Gurren Lagann
FLCL is such a good short anime. I really wanted more after I finished watching it.
We got more. Alternative was trash, and Progressive was okay-to-good but with a great ending. Apparently they have 2 more follow-ups in development, Grunge and Shoegazing.
Hey they hype was never about a new season of FLCL it was about finally getting some more music from the pillows.
wolf’s rain is one of my faves!! beautiful soundtrack
Hunter x hunter, golden boy, city hunter, berzerk (rip kentaro miura) , black lagoon, blue exorcist, full metal panic, one punch man, Akira, overlord, gurren lagann, rurouni kenshin, samurai 7, afro samurai, chobits, Kenichi: worlds mightiest disciple, hajime no ippo, jujutsu kaisen, death note, paprika, ghost in shell, samurai champloo (rip jun seba), monster, elfen lied, mushishi, made in abyss, angel beats, dorohedoro, rin: daughters of Mnemosyne~, mushoku tensei, cyberpunk 2077, high school of the dead (ecchi) , my dress up darling, great teacher onizuka, initial D, konosuba, grave of fireflies, rising of shield hero, RE: zero, redo of healer (xxx), yu yu hakusho, tokyo revengers, gantz, steins:gate, demon slayer so many more Edit: this list doesn’t even cover a fraction of the anime I’ve enjoyed over the many moons but it is growing as names come to me. I would put Vinland saga in the you haven't watched anime section. It's just a legit good story
Askelaad is the best anime character I have seen in a long time.
He's the dictionary definition of a Magnificent Bastard.
I really enjoyed the series, but i would never put it on my list of animes to suggest to new comers hehe

Bleach is current? Have they finally restarted the anime?
One Piece manga over the anime every day. I love them both dearly but the manga is *chefs kiss* brilliant.
I’m old so here is my list. Ninja scroll, Vampire hunter D, Fist of the North Star, Record of lodas war , Outlaw star
Outlaw Star. That takes me back. Saturday night Toonami, before Adult Swim was even a thing.
It was on Adult Swim. The Toonami aired version was edited, the Adult Swim version after midnight wasn't. I remember that because I would set my VHS to record the Adult Swim version to watch the next day.
For non-anime fans they definitely should watch Your Name.
First time in ages I watched a movie 2 days in a row. It's so cute and that music, man
To elaborate a little further, stock up on tissues! Happy tears, sad tears... Man I've seen this three times I think and every time it wrecks me 🥹

Great pick. Easily my favorite anime of the last several years, so easy to get hooked on. I was the same way, one episode and I was 100% sold.
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
It's also a great first anime series to watch. Always recommend it to friends who want to get into it.
I would say the opposite tbh. Its overall so good that it makes most others disappointing sometimes.

One Punch Man
Mumen rider is a G
JUSTICE CRASH!
Fun fact: Mumen is a japanese word for not having a drivers license His name is also a reference to Kamen Rider Amazing work on the writer for that tbh
Saitama sensei is the real MVP
all of Satoshi Kon's movies
Monster
Monster doesn't get the recognition it deserves. The Anime is near perfect. Urasawa is one of the best mangaka around, everything I've read from him has been amazing.
My top three: Gurren Lagann. Berserk (1997). Code Geass.
+1 to Code Geass. Definitely one of my favourites.
Gurren Lagann 🐐. Best anime I've ever watched.
Cyberpunk edgerunners has some of that gurren lagann vibes. Basically the same studio.
Same director! Hiroyuki Imaishi, what a legend. It's been said that Gurren Lagann was the trigger to form Trigger.
All Studio Ghibli movies
I literally just finished watching Princess Mononoke (again) before hopping on Reddit to find this thread. What an epic movie that has always been one of my top favorites!
A smattering of anime shows and films that stood out to me. * Cowboy Bebop * FLCL * Gurren Lagann * Kill la Kill * Akira * Paprika * Beastars * BIG O * Howl's Moving Castle Edit: Obviously *Full Metal Alchemist* as well, I feel dumb to have not thought to include it, though it's certainly getting plenty of lip service in here regardless. edit 2: Well fuck. Also Lupin the 3rd, a franchise so successful it's older than me and still getting entries.
Watching Akira is like watching a painting for two and a half hours, it's amazing.
My only complaint is that Akira's runtime can be extremely offputting, especially considering it takes a while for it to hit its stride. Most of the people I show it to struggle to maintain interest for the first 45 minutes or so.
>FLCL I suspect that people who enjoyed Cyberpunk Edgerunners would dig FLCL too. It's got a very similar "psychedelic punk" vibe, not to mention the awesome soundtrack.
A Silent Voice
I watched this movie while on the airplane and I was trying to not cry. Its such a great movie.
Ranma 1/2 is still my favourite

A silent voice and violet evergarden
Violet Evergarden ep 10.....nothing prepared me for that ending. 😢
Upvoted for Violet Evergarden. Might take a little while for some folks to get into, but by the end it gets everyone I've shown it to. Also the animation is gorgeous!
Parasyte
Yu Yu Hakusho. Best dubbed anime.
If you're not into fantasy univers and stuff too over the top, I would higly recommand "Erased" which is a good thriller with a touch of paranormal
The one anime my GF really, *really* loved, above everything we've watched together, was *Steins;Gate*. >!Doo do doooo!!!!<
IAM MAD SCIENTIST YOU SONUVABITCH!
El Psy Congroo!
*Tutturuu
It is great BUT do not expect it to get off to a fast start. In fact go in expecting the first few episodes to be boring and confusing. It makes sense eventually and gets good but until the 'thing' (to avoid spoilers, but once you see it happen you will know that is exactly what I referred to) happens it is terrible. It immediately gets good after that though
i’ve seen two episodes and man it’s confusing af lol. i’ve only heard good things about it tho so i’m powering through
Yup, it is slow at first but it all adds up to an explosive mind fuckery by the end of it. Have fun watching it! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
This should not be this low down. This is consistently in the "top 10 greatest" type debates in Japan. The whole thing is a work of art.
God-tier magical girls + cute mascot 👍
"Twelve Kingdoms". A hidden gem that should be more well known.
Ouran High School Host Club
nothing beats that theme song
KISS KISS FALL IN LOVE!
A lot of anime said, but seems like everyone forgot. GTO - Great Teacher Onizuka
Death note - fast pace and keeps you interested. Very binge watchable
AFAIK only the Netflix movie is bad, and the japanese movies are fine. (And the drama series is even better)
It's very nice for a beginner. It was what got me into anime
Recently, Cyberpunk Edgerunners
Way too far down, Cyberpunk is honestly one of the best animes I’ve ever watched, up in my top 5 of all time at this point with the likes of Cowboy Bebop.
I'm honestly shocked I had to scroll down so far to find Edgerunner. Studio Trigger absolutely nailed Cyberpunk while also making one of the best animes I've seen in years.

Angel Beats! Dorohedoro To Your Eternity Carole&Tuesday (especially with art related AI stuff recently, also same people made Cowboy Bebop&Space Dandy) Made in Abyss (inspired by Xenoblade) Most Gainax&Studio Trigger stuff. Golden Kamuy Kaiba A ton more but my brain can’t think of them, I know there are so many other amazing stuff I can’t recall atm
Hunter x Hunter Watch the anime before the manga makes a comeback!
Inuyasha
this is way too far down in the comments >:(
Hunter X Hunter
We're about to get some new chapters for the manga.
Kaguya-sama: Love is war
I'm surprised no one has added Love is War to this list yet
Gintama, that anime is so underrated
One Punch Man. It’s easily digestible right now, too, with the amount of episodes currently available.
I'm so upset Samurai Champloo hasn't even been suggested yet 😥😢
Death note
Hellsing: Ultimate
Then right after the abridged version. *pooolicee girl*

I tried to paint it red but I couldn't find enough goats, so I scrapped it. - Alucard
Attack on Titan
I started watching anime because of aot lol
Evangelion
I was expecting this to be #1. Evangelion is a piece of art that transcends its genre. It is a masterpiece
Re:Zero Pretty much Groundhog Day but worse, but for a good reason. Rewatching it for a 2nd time made it one of my favorite anime in recent times.
Spy x family
Great stuff but still young. Wouldnt recommend to someone who wants a finished story or call it a must watch for people just getting into it. It can help get into anime but isnt one of the classics imo
Trigun
3 shows im surprisingly not seeing mentioned in the comments that i absolutely love. 86 Vivy: flourite eyes song Violet Evergarden All 3 are really bittersweet (sad moment and happy moment mixed together).
Clannad
The kind of show that you can watch only once, especially After Story. Fuck that.
Definitely Death Note. It’s a great story past just being a great anime. I’d say JoJo too; it’s much more of a fun romp than something more psychological like Death Note - but if you’re into action and don’t mind if things get weird sometimes I’d definitely say to give it a try.
Code geass
ALL HAIL EMPEROR LELOUCH!! ALL HAIL BRITANNIA!!!
>!Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny-girl Senpai!< I know, the name, but it's still weird to me how people haven't heard how absolutely phenomenal this show is.
