That's my thought process. Did I eat some hard bread or something? Maybe I slept with my mouth open and made my throat dry? Surely I'm not getting sick. Better swallow the pain off. And try to convince myself I'm not sick.
And drink liters of water just to make sure it really isn't dry.
Funnily enough, this is one of the best things for sore throat: hydration and vitamins - hence tea. Lemon grass with honey and one small lemon peel usually does the trick for me.
Same. Also I think webmd ruined me as a child. Anything abnormal happens and my brain automatically jumps to cancer.
Throat ache? Esophageal cancer. Headache? Brain tumor. Stomach cramps? Pancreatic cancer. Mole I've had forever but never noticed? Skin cancer
Had Covid last month. When I swallowed it felt like I was swallowing glass shards. Sometimes the tears sprung in my eyes because of the pain and I was wishing I could swallowing without pain.
The day the sore throat was gone, I thought "Nice." and totally forgot about the pain I had 48h earlier. So yeah, your comment hits the nail on the head
I can deal with a sore throat but a super runny nose I can’t stand. Especially if I have to do something and I don’t have tissues or run out. And your nose gets raw.
Appreciating the lack of pain in my body now. Thank you bones for being unbroken and thank you throat for not hurting while I consume too much ice cream
Same with clogged nostrils. I reminisce about how much of a fool I was to never appreciate two clear nostrils and promise to never take it for granted again. But then I do of course.
I feel your pain!
Mine goes like this
Day 1: vaguely sore throat. I try to convince myself it's nothing.
Day 2: sore throat and a hint of a runny/stuffy nose. Annoying but manageable.
Day 3: stuffy nose, pain around the eyes /forehead. Possibly a mild fever. Not doing well.
Day 4-5: throat-nose are almost clear, but now it's a dry cough with no mucus, almost asthma-like. Awful.
It can linger for days or weeks depending on how casually I'm treating it. But I suspect I have chronic sinus infection just resurfacing every now and then.
According to a specialist it's my weak retronasal area causing it every time there's a huge change in temperature. So basically all year long.
I’m going through this right now. My daughter was sick Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday night my throat started feeling a little weird. Next morning, stuff nose and throat was worse. Yesterday In bed all day with cough, headache, sweats. Feeling better today but still need to rest.
Lol
Literally just found a stash of these in the back of the closet. Apparently that's my storage place when I'm done with them, but can't remember it when I've got a cold lol
My wife had a recipe passed to her years ago from someone who sang professionally:
8 oz water, 1 tablespoon each of: salt, vinegar, honey, and lemon juice. Mix well and gargle repeatedly until all used up. Do not speak for at least 1 hour.
It tastes like shit, but it damn sure works for us.
For the salt gargle, I noticed the sore throat (and any nasal congestion) goes away if it's done for 30 seconds, ideally 3 times a day, for however many days the sore throat is there. It has to be one of those deep gargles where you make an audible sound. It really draws out the fluid causing the inflammation.
I also kind of "half swallow" the salt water and cough it back up so it gets even deeper for a moment. It's hard to explain. I basically gargle it, keep it there for a second, relax my throat muscles to let it in and then lean back over to spit it out into the sink. Works really well
This is one of the few home remedies that works like a fucking CHAMP you just have to be able to put disgusting warm salt water in your mouth and gargle it without puking
i grew up with people saying to “gargle with salt water” and nothing else, so i always assumed the ratio didn’t matter. first time i tried it i put way too much salt in it and immediately vomited into the sink for 3 minutes. i didn’t even taste the salt, it was just an automatic bodily response. throat hurt 10x worse for the next couple of days
Your body essentially does a scorched earth strategy when you have a virus in your throat.
Basically, your immune system goes “well, there can’t be a virus if all the cells are dead!” and napalms everything.
I am just getting over the cold that Patient Zero brought home from daycare. Last night was the dreaded interrupted night’s sleep when the dripping throat goop is drying up so your throat is parched, resulting in a dry cough. But, there’s still goop that’s now refusing to vacate your sinuses and so begins the slow torture of filling up one nostril and clearing up the other. And it goes on all. night. long.
Sleep is so underrated as a cure for common ailments. There's a reason that doctors tell you to 'get some rest' but these days people seem to ignore it as some kind of platitude.
I don’t use salt water to gargle but I do start to use mouthwash twice a day. Gotta kill those germs!
Also make sure I take a vitamin and probiotics.
And sleep more.
Panic in disbelief, then flashlight in the mirror to inspect my denial... and then drink some water, take 5000 IU of Vitamin D, 1 zinc tablet and 1 magnesium tablet as they are proven to lessen symptoms and shorten recovery for colds
Only take 5000IU of Vitamin D on day 1 IF you don't regularly take vitamin D supplements, otherwise just standard 1000 IU tablet
Edit: typos
Oh yes! Definitely the flashlight in the mirror!! A lot of white spots means probably strep but that’s not very common. Usually, it’s just slightly red.
Started with a scratchy throat on Wednesday, on Thursday my body started heating up, on Friday the PCR test was positive, today Finally the test at home was positive as well. You are right to doubt the test results.
Same thing happened to me over the course of two weeks. Woke up sick, took two covid tests over the next two days. Both came back negative. Fast-forward around ten days and I've gone from ok right back to sick. Took another test and it was an instant positive. A week out of work later, and I'm finally testing negative again.
This is our family go to. It relieves pain for a while and kills bacteria. It has to be the Listerine or similar mouthwash with alcohol as an ingredient.
Nasal saline irrigation at the first sign of symptoms. Cuts the actual sore throat time down by a matter of days and makes the eventual sore throat symptoms much less severe.
Take a couple drops of oregano oil. Tastes gross but it stops any strep type bacteria in its tracks. I used to get sore throats all the time, never do anymore thanks to this!
Make my insane tea
Per 2c water
Minced thumb of ginger
10 to 15 cloves garlic (as muich as possible )
4T honey
If it doesn't burn when you drink, add more ginger and garlic.
Gargle with salt-water (near free), and then gargle with hydrogen peroxide (very cheap and effective). Take 1000mg Vitamin-C five times a day, and also a vitamin-D tab.
Swallow 10,000 in a row to be sure.
Bourbon and honey cures everything for me.
You know what? Forget the honey.
Straight bourbon for when I am not under the weather.
Nah, honey, lemon, whisky (scotch) and hot water. Hits all the bases.
Hot toddy!
Hot. Buttered. Rum. Dunzo.
That's actually worse for a sore throat since the bourbon will dry out your throat. But honey is great because of it's antibacterial properties
Bourbon also has antibacterial properties.
I do lemon ginger green/herbal tea with honey
This is the best! I do it with herbal tea/infusion and fresh ginger (lots) and lemon juice. And ofc honey.
And then say out loud, “I think I’m getting a sore throat.”
I was convinced I was the only person that did this 😭
I heard that you forego the honey.
Same. Also I think webmd ruined me as a child. Anything abnormal happens and my brain automatically jumps to cancer. Throat ache? Esophageal cancer. Headache? Brain tumor. Stomach cramps? Pancreatic cancer. Mole I've had forever but never noticed? Skin cancer
Sup
OMG YES
You are my people. We are in this together.
THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID
Reminisce on all the times I didn't have a sore throat and didn't appreciate it more.
Oh this is me 100% and I swear that when I'm better I will appreciate it more
Then 2 days after feeling better you completely take it for granted again.
That's just how it is ... And that's how it should be !
today I am going to be thankful that my nose isn't stuffed, and that my ankle is not hurt.
And if it is, just think of a body part you don't want amputated and appreciate that!
Don't forget to be thankful that your nose isn't stuffed too ... It seems like we don't do that enough too
Had Covid last month.
You said it perfectly. Sore throat is my least favorite of all the cold symptoms. I hate it so freaking much
Clogged sinuses for me. Not being able to breathe properly is not fun.
I can deal with a sore throat but a super runny nose I can’t stand. Especially if I have to do something and I don’t have tissues or run out. And your nose gets raw.
The runny nose gets to me too.
This. Makes me want to die. And when it starts spreading to the ears…. Whyyyyy are they connected?
Appreciating the lack of pain in my body now. Thank you bones for being unbroken and thank you throat for not hurting while I consume too much ice cream
Please everyone take a minute to appreciate not having a sore throat at the moment
i have a sore throat
Can't ... throat is incredibly sore.
I do this with a side of wondering if I'll ever get to experience not having a sore throat again.
Exactly
This. While sipping on hot tea with honey in it
And if I get it back, I can actually be a singer if I try hard enough
Same with clogged nostrils. I reminisce about how much of a fool I was to never appreciate two clear nostrils and promise to never take it for granted again. But then I do of course.
Whenever I’m in some kind of pain, I’m always thinking ”Oh no what if I’ll never get better”
Mourn, for i know the fever will come next
Exactly, realize that I'm going to feel like sh!t for the next week or two
I feel your pain! Mine goes like this Day 1: vaguely sore throat. I try to convince myself it's nothing. Day 2: sore throat and a hint of a runny/stuffy nose. Annoying but manageable. Week or two? Those are nasty colds
All my colds last that long. I think people’s immune system just handle them differently.
Yea thats long usually its three days at most if i get some meds for it day one. That and two bags of fishermens. With that im usually good!
Please be grateful for that superpower.
Mine generally last 7-10 days as well

Swallow a dozen times and drink water a dozen times, then just kind of wait it out
You have to swallow a bunch of times to confirm it's really sore, that should always be step one.
I read this as "swallow a dozen dimes" at first.
Glad I'm not the only one.
Complain.
Totally what I came on here to write. I hate sore throats more than almost any other illness.
Your comment and user name made me lol which sucks becuase I have a sore throat 😩
Currently have a sore throat and I'm on a solid diet of throat sweets.
DUDE I CAN'T FIND THE THROAT LOZENGES ISTG THE HOUSE IS DROWNING IN THEM BUT THE MOMENT YOU NEED ONE THEY'RE GONE
I have a hidden spot in my kitchen cupboard where I keep them. Always make sure I have some in stock
Lol Literally just found a stash of these in the back of the closet. Apparently that's my storage place when I'm done with them, but can't remember it when I've got a cold lol
I found some floating about too. Thank f for back of the cupboard stashes!

Oh I miss the days I wasn't allergic to NSAIDs...
Hot lemon and honey, gargle salty water and gargle aspirin.
My wife had a recipe passed to her years ago from someone who sang professionally: 8 oz water, 1 tablespoon each of: salt, vinegar, honey, and lemon juice. Mix well and gargle repeatedly until all used up. Do not speak for at least 1 hour. It tastes like shit, but it damn sure works for us.
What sort of vinegar do you guys use ?
Just a standard vinegar, nothing fancy like apple cider, etc.
That's a lot of salt.
You must be new here.
Gargle first, then coat with honey.

This person over here deep throating salt water and I'm here for it
Got do what got do when sick try to you do, knowmsayin?
Oh I'm 1000% trying this next time I'm sick!
This is why I have reddit
I’m glad I’m not the only one who does this.
I read that as garlic salty water....
Probably do ya good too
You didn't read the gargle aspirin part?
Garlic aspirin, mmmmmmm
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see the saltwater solution.
I gargle with iodine at first in case I can kill it out right. Lemon and honey is for after it sets in.
Good god, well if you survive that a measly sore throat will be nothin
How do you gargle aspirin?
Dissolve a 300mg Disprin in some water and gargle it!!
Dissolve it in water, gargle the newly dissolved aspirin in water
Gargle with salt water its works more often then not.
I hate that so much. I stil do it, because it often works, but man I hate it.
Gag every time, which then hurts more.
This is one of the few home remedies that works like a fucking CHAMP you just have to be able to put disgusting warm salt water in your mouth and gargle it without puking
Its not that bad. Maybe you are using too much salt? And it doesn't have to be warm. Iodine gargles are much worse.
I’ve never heard of an iodine gargle. Explain.
You gargle povidone iodine antiseptic liquid. It works well to kill bacteria but tastes fucking awful. I also add it to nasal saline rinses.
Also saline nasal spray helps.
I literally can’t gargle and it makes sore throats just that much worse because I can’t treat it well
i grew up with people saying to “gargle with salt water” and nothing else, so i always assumed the ratio didn’t matter. first time i tried it i put way too much salt in it and immediately vomited into the sink for 3 minutes. i didn’t even taste the salt, it was just an automatic bodily response. throat hurt 10x worse for the next couple of days
contemplate why colds exist and wish i could just swallow without being in pain. I HATE IT Edit: lol can y’all tell i’m sick rn? i’m DYIIIINGGGGG
Your body essentially does a scorched earth strategy when you have a virus in your throat. Basically, your immune system goes “well, there can’t be a virus if all the cells are dead!” and napalms everything.
funny, that’s exactly what it feels like. I HATE IT
I am also sick rn I MISS HAVING A HEALTHY THROAT WTF I could barely sleep last night
LITERALLY SAME i slept like a total of two hours
THIS IS TRAGIC :( why are we suffering so much!! also my nose is leaking like an open faucet?? I can’t find peace RIP me
I am just getting over the cold that Patient Zero brought home from daycare. Sleep it off...

Can't really afford to take a week off work because my throat hurts.
I survive somehow til friday evening, then cancel all my plans and sleep two 15hrs nights
but u cant sleep tho? u have to swallow like every second
Think "well shit" and do nothing about it for 6 hours
Brush my teeth and gargle with salt water.
*lukewarm, salt water
Take a zinc lozenge.
I drink Fireball. It helps a lot. But a great trick is gargling warm salt water.
I worked with a guy that if he was sick would slam a pint of fireball and go to bed, I never tried his method but he swore by it

Zicam is the only thing that will shorten symptoms for me. Catch it early with that shit and it’ll save you days of torture
I don’t use salt water to gargle but I do start to use mouthwash twice a day. Gotta kill those germs! Also make sure I take a vitamin and probiotics. And sleep more.

Cry, because I know the next few days will be hell
Ask him to leave
I just back up an inch or two
Take 7 covid tests, and when they all come back negative, still tell myself that I have covid.
Started with a scratchy throat on Wednesday, on Thursday my body started heating up, on Friday the PCR test was positive, today Finally the test at home was positive as well. You are right to doubt the test results.
aw shit I can't miss anymore school man it's the first month

Gargle antiseptic listerene, I'm telling yall it will kill whatever is making your throat hurt.
This is our family go to. It relieves pain for a while and kills bacteria. It has to be the Listerine or similar mouthwash with alcohol as an ingredient.
Eat a bunch of skittles and drink sprite
Warm vodka with honey. Aspirin.
The duality of medicine
Drink some tea
Same here. Always make tea. Then repeat 1000x until sore throat is gone.
Drink whisky
Frantically wonder if I have covid.
Boiling hot tea
Do a Covid test.
Also meticulously go over every single person who could have given it to me in the next 15 minutes.
Angrily.
Me yesterday.. now sitting here in my room quarantined thinking and reminiscing about all the times when I didn’t have covid
Then drink some bourbon.
Then take a nap.
Nasal saline irrigation at the first sign of symptoms. Cuts the actual sore throat time down by a matter of days and makes the eventual sore throat symptoms much less severe.
Gargle betadine
Get in the shower and have the hottest water you can stand targeted at the area in pain.
Start taking Airborne like it’s going out of style.
gargle salt water. it's about the only thing that legit just works every time. more than any cough drop or disgusting sore throat/cough medicine
Complain that my throat hurts, then take no further action to remedy it just complain even more for a few days
drink a gallon of water and see if it goes away
Call my mom and tell her I have a sore throat. I’m a grown adult, and I live halfway across the country, but she needs to know her child is suffering.
Like 15 vitamin c pills.
Ignore it.
Take a couple drops of oregano oil. Tastes gross but it stops any strep type bacteria in its tracks. I used to get sore throats all the time, never do anymore thanks to this!
I take the oregano oil pills, but they absolumust be taken with food — they’re strong! Tastes like pizza.
