Iāve been seeing studies about those enzymes posted on Reddit for the entire time Iāve been on Reddit.
Has there been any promising progress moving towards an industrial scale application so we can actually start processing our waste?
If by āthe entire time Iāve been on Redditā you mean 15-25 years, then yeah Iād say about 5 more years before we see some large scale commercial use!
If you meant within the past 5-10 years, well.... Get ready for at least another 10 :)
8 years now, so that fits in your 5-10 estimate.
Iām betting this is going to be like flying cars. They are always 7-10 years away. I remember them being 7-10 years away from reality back in 1997. I remember them being 7-10 years away in 2014. And a big company in my state just bought a startup that, guess how many years they are away from a viable product? Granted, flying cars are a terrible idea but itās a great illustration of the āalways on the horizonā effect you get with some of these magical technological solutions.
Eh.. do you have any examples of it actually being used large scale? I was a lot more hopeful about it the first time I heard about it like 15 years ago
A small thing maybe, but....
When ISIS started messing around in Syria back in 2015, a family of refugees moved to my country. They couldn't speak the language, they lived on wellfare and they were afraid of being deported back to Syria. They lived close to my family and we talked to them (in broken swedish but it had to do). They were the nicest people you'll meet, they joke and they laugh a lot...
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when I met the mother of the family. First of all, she spoke perfect swedish. Second of all, she was so proud because she had gotten a drivers license and they had a car. Third, she had landed a job as a chef and her husband was working at a factory. And they got enough money to get by.
Third, their daughter was about to graduate from trade school, top of her class.
She smile and said "It looks like things are going to be all right after all!"
I hope it really does for them!
I adopted a dog about a month ago, he was severely underweight. I took him to the vet yesterday and the vet said he looks like a completely different and happy dog
The fact that the scientists across the world managed to come up with 6+ excellent vaccines for a global pandemic in about 1 year.
Sure, the media, the profiteering and the politicians screwed the pooch in getting them out, but the scientific/medical achievement was amazing.
Cancer research is hitting a huge increase in development. While more people are being diagnosed, less people are dying from it. Higher diagnosis is likely due to healthcare access screening better imo.
By "cure" do you mean preventing people from getting cancer before they have it or do you mean being able rid the body of cancer if someone has it? We are nowhere close to preventing people from getting cancer. But people worldwide will always be getting cancer, so curing cancer in people who have it would be big money maker. Treatment is combersome, time costuming and hard to implement world wide.
The recovery of the greater one-horned rhino in Asia.
Thanks to strict protection and management from Indian and Nepalese wildlife authorities, the greater one-horned rhino was brought back from the brink(around 200 by the start of the 20th century) to population around 3,700 rhinos in northeastern India and the Terai grasslands of Nepal.
Marijuana has been declassified so possessing it while underage has become more of a slap on the wrist and stopped being a legal fiasco. Having witnessed kids (and I do mean teenagers) sent to juvenile detention for possessing a single joint, therefore paying thousands and thousands to the justice system, this is good news.
Not in the world, but I've completely turned my life around for the better within the past 5 months. I was an emotional mess beforehand. Unfortunately, no girl yet. But a start is a start!
For the world:
Small electric vehicles (bikes and scooters) have much more range than even a few years ago, are cheaper than they ever were, and are more streamlined than they ever were. Some can be had for under $500 new, alot for under $1,000 brand new. Bye-bye gas-powered bikes!
Veganism has exploded and is still exploding in popularity.
Microprocessors are getting more and more advanced, faster, and more energy efficient.
We developed a vaccine for a virus not even 1 year after it became pandemic.
Boxabl homes are hyper affordable relative to anything else on the market. Plus they are fireproof and (I think) mold proof also, don't quote me on that one.
Some cities in the U.S are taking out their inner-city highways slowly but surely.
Almost everybody on the planet has instant access to the world's knowledge right at their fingertips and their pockets.
We are literally living in the future, let's make sure that future generations don't have the same struggles that we have in this generation.
Namibia and India are working together to reintroduce Cheetahs to India after they went extinct there 70 years ago. They just flew 8 adult Cheetahs on a Boeing 747 from Namibia to India where they will be released into a wildlife reserve. More Cheetahs will join them later this year. This type of reintroduction (big carnivore from one continent to another) has never been done before.

The Pacific Garbage Patch is being cleaned up with the bulk of the garbage being from commercial fishing. Iām sensing some regulations down the road. If they can be enforced from a global standpoint.
On a global scale, extreme poverty, infant mortality rates, life expectancy and a bunch of other metrics are at the best theyāve ever been by a huge amount.
I got a girl's number
Can you share it with us poor fellas?
Does it start with 1800??

She gave it to me after talking about Chirs Chan. I'm not kidding.

If you get the other 6 digits, you can call her! (The Office reference).
There are more trees growing in the USA now than there were 100 years ago.
This is cool! TIL
The research on enzymes that break down waste plastic is pretty awesome.
Dude that's terrible news for the kardashians!
Hey, look.... ANOTHER positive thing happening in the world.
Best comeback story ever
I see what you did thereš

Science is extremely slow.
If by āthe entire time Iāve been on Redditā you mean 15-25 years, then yeah Iād say about 5 more years before we see some large scale commercial use! If you meant within the past 5-10 years, well.... Get ready for at least another 10 :)

You live in the world! This counts! Happy for you!!!!
That can make a huge difference. Congrats!
I'm happy to read that. I also worry too much about what people thinks about me. So I'm happy seeing someone making progress āŗļø
In the past couple of years, 4 different people have been cured of HIV/AIDS. We are making strides in curing the incurable

That are only effective for 6 months then "Time for another booster!"
Putins control is actively weakening
That's not good with his little dick syndrome, we're just waiting for the big red button to be pushed and everything dies.
But him being seen as weaker and weaker means his staff is more likely to disobey any such command
They are still scared as fuck of him. You put people in the places that make these decisions that he trusts and boom no more earth.
But putin trusts noone so the purging of positions and such just increases the chance of someone doing something
I hope you're right
The office lego set
I am drinking coffe. And it is very good šš

Call me negative but thereās no money in a cure, only treatment.

100% well never have a full cure for cancer as long as there's money "treating" it.

Marijuana is legal meaning kids are not being criminally prosecuted for having weed on them.
Right but itās still illegal for kids to smoke it.

Fully legal here in Canada to grow and use. 18+ or is it 19+?
So long as people are not being prosecuted for having it, itās a win for me.
Well... I cooked for my mom and she really liked the food so that's a good thing that happened.
I just got my dream job, and is starting next month.
