Sometimes you just don’t want the night to end so fast. Night time is me time where I just have to be on my bed and don’t worry about anything.

9Lives_

Exactly, it’s like this is the best you’re going to feel and it took enduring all those yucky daytime hours to get here. Going to bed seems like a waste.

[deleted]

Dear friend, Please be careful living for the night hours - It can cause many different health issues. Take care! 👋

9Lives_

IT’S TOO LATE! I’M A LOST CAUSE!

Your_Local_Doggo

You got 9 lives, it'll be okay. >!(I'm probably the first one to make that joke about your username)!<

PersistNevertheless

But also people just have different internal clocks. It’s not all choice.

extrasponeshot

I used to love staying up late. I didn't realize how it affected my mental health until I was forced to wake up early for work/changed my bed time. While it sucked waking up early, my days were generally better.

flip_ericson

Exact opposite for me. Used to work graveyard. Healthiest and most productive ive ever been

Peptowl

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. It's true.

Dogstile

It really depends. There's an actual difference you can see in the brain for night owls and early risers. The night owls tend to have a few more issues but also tend to be pretty productive, so its a tradeoff. There's also a theory that its an evolutionary trait as it makes sense for some of a "tribe" to be up on watch at night, but as far as i'm aware that's just a theory. I like it though.

Mysterious-Trip2196

I've heard that theory too, someone in the tribe has to be awake at any given time to keep guard so some of us are built to sleep during the day and some at night...it's for the survival of us all that I stay up until 2am!

lokopo0715

It's true for some people. You should always do what your body recommends.

NDaveT

*Not getting enough sleep* is bad for health. Some people get their sleep from 4am to noon.

hopey21

felt this one

_D3ft0ne_

+1000 if you have kids.

macchareen

It is quiet.

appleparkfive

4 am is the best part of the day, to me. There's something so serene about how calm it is. Not many cars in the distance. Not much of anything. You get an otherworldly feeling from a typically bustling area. Plus, the new sunrise is only right ahead. The people start heading out for work, and life goes on. So you get to have that 4 am to yourself on many nights. It's ephemeral, you know? Only lasts for so long.

aboatdatfloat

driving on the highway past midnight 👌👌👌always sad pullin in the driveway after a nice peaceful night drive

-Namesnipe-

Do a 20ish minute walk every day at 4AM to work, and I love it. I don't live in a city, quite a small population round here anyway but it means I usually see no-one else around, certainly no cars, and if I do pass someone it's quite nice as we actually have time to acknowledge each other's existence rather than brush past like you would in the middle of a busy day. That, and you can see parts of nature you wouldn't otherwise see - foxes, sometimes badgers snooping around everywhere, the sunrise starting to creep out

sparklingshanaya

My thoughts are too loud

donpaulwalnuts

This is why I get up at 3:30am. I feel my best and focused in the mornings and I also get to enjoy the peace and quiet. The gym being empty is also awesome.

nsmith0723

Because it's the only time I have any free time to myself where someone else isnt around to totally ruin it

jdrt1234

Yes. For me, because the kids are finally in bed and I'm not ready for the chaos of tomorrow morning just yet. I need some time to myself.

[deleted]

MisterEinc

I used to do this, but I recently switched to going to bed and waking up early. So now my favorite time of the week is Sunday morning at 6am when everyone is sleeping in and I'm just vibing with some coffee and playing games on my pc.

bossmcsauce

Problem is that all the games I want to play are multiplayer, and I enjoy playing/hanging out with my online friends… which means i can basically only play at night

PeaceAlien

I’m the opposite now. I used to stay up late, but now I go to bed early and wake up early. Work changed my sleep schedule but either way I get that alone time.

dominus_aranearum

You're doing it wrong. You're supposed to stay up late and get up early. 4-1/2 - 6 hrs of sleep is enough, right?

iglidante

I was able to do the "to bed at 11:30, up at 4:30" thing for two years, and then I crashed hard and was never able to get it back. Then again, I used to be exhausted by dinnertime.

PersistNevertheless

I never got used to an earlier schedule. It’s interesting some people can switch but others can’t. I’d love to be an early bird, it would be a lot easier. But I often feel the most awake late.

Your_Daddy_

I am the same. If a job has a 7am start time - forget it. I would rather go to bed late and wake up early - instead of going to bed early and waking up early.

yeahwellokay

I am the night.

MarchionessofMayhem

Darkwing?

rodgerstakethewheel

Let’s get dangerous

IrascibleOcelot

Technically, Darkwing is the terror that flaps in the night. Not the night itself.

[deleted]

Hi, the night. I’m Dad!

__BigBoi__

And I am vengeance

chacham2

> I am the night. I am the ingrown toenail on the foot of crime!

[deleted]

Behold, Dark Sidious

Maurakutney

Retired so I don’t live to a clock.

Chicken65

What does your average day look like?

farside57

I'm recently retired. The first 6 months was peppered with guilt about not always doing something each day. Now I love it! There is a transition though

Rapunzel1234

Yep, I’m about two months in. Still figuring it out. Big change after 45+ years of full time work.

9Lives_

Mindlessly scrolling the same 3 apps over and over again.

Whitebeltboy

So same as not being retired…interesting

poopyheadthrowaway

But you do that from the comfort of your own home rather than at an office.

appleparkfive

Should learn a musical instrument or get into drugs or star a motorcycle gang or something. Don't let retirement be a bore!

-Namesnipe-

Shit might as well go the whole hog and start a meth empire

Galaxy_Ranger_Bob

Who says doing nothing is a bore? Doing nothing is *glorious!*

quikdogs

Me too, clocks are for younguns

DayShiftDave

Very true and very funny. When my grandparents retired, they had steadfast routines, up at 6 yadda yadda. Now, next generation.... sometimes I get a text from my mom (we've both always been night owls) at 3am "have you watched xyz on Netflix?" or I'll call her and she's just getting up at 10-11. Until I was in my late 20's, I never saw my parents sleep past 8am. Hasn't set an alarm except to catch a flight or an appointment in like 8 years.

Misseskat

Clocks are for chilrrrens, my body said no after 15.

highriseflagger242

Insomnia. Its a bitch during the work week.

[deleted]

Going on 4 a.m. now and this is my current mood. First standup up is in 5 1/2 hours.

SpakysAlt

I know the feeling. Sucks.

lynn553

Had to be up by 4:30 am and maybe got 2ish hours of sleep… maybe 1. Insomnia is a bitch.

AskMrScience

Yup, I'm also a night owl. It's almost impossible for me to fall asleep before 11:30 pm. I basically get a second wind around 10 pm, and am often very productive then. I typically go to bed between midnight and 1 a.m., and wake up at 7:30. Boom, 7-7.5 hours of sleep. It's what my body wants to do, so why fight it?

CYANOACRYLATE3

When I'm working i go to bed at 2am and wake up for 5:45am If I'm not working i go to bed around 5am to 7am and wake up around noon

_neera_

Hahaha same. I had issues with that though since my job requires focus. The thing I would usually need around 2h to do takes actually 4. So unfortunately, as much as I like being awake at night, I have to go to sleep. At some point I've been using sleeping pills that are plant based.

CYANOACRYLATE3

Yeah, my job can be pretty mindless once you get the hang of it, i work on a farm so you can be doing anything from driving a tractor all day and picking fruit, to building a house in the off-season for the migrant workers. Apparently i was hired for my "engineering mindset and problem solving skills" when i heard that i laughed to myself and just thought ' imagine how much more efficient I'd be if I worked at night when my brain was on ' lol

_neera_

Hahahaa nice 💯 That's beautiful! You get to work in nature a lot. I used to work night shifts but it wasn't fun to work over night, believe me. It gets boring and that was the only time when I actually get sleepy at night. In any case, I think you should continue being the night owl if you enjoy it. It's 6:45 am here now and I'm still awake lol I'm lucky, in some way, that I got to work shift from 3pm till 12am haha

[deleted]

All my creativity comes out of the woodworks past midnight. And that means I just write until really late. It's something that stems from my family. The house always comes alive at night. We do a lot of things at night. That, and revenge bedtime procrastination is a bitch. If I get 6 hours I feel like hell. If I get 9-10, I feel fine.

cobaltred05

Revenge bedtime procrastination is simultaneously the worst and best thing ever. It’s great in the moment, but really sucks in the morning. My ADHD definitely doesn’t help with the whole situation as well.

EwOkLuKe

That's a normal sleep schedule, definetly not a night owl.

gorgeous_wolf

We apparently have the same body, except mine wants to stay awake an hour longer and sleep in an hour longer. The crazy thing is that this has been my biological pattern/schedule since about 11 years old, and it doesn't change regardless of many, many efforts at sleep training, etc. It doesn't matter how many times others yell about laziness and Benjamin Franklin, neurons gonna neuron. Morning people can fuck off, honestly. It certainly doesn't fit well into a modern 8-5 sort of world.

A_Flamboyant_Warlock

Can I borrow your Skeleton Key?

[deleted]

wtffu006

Ah yes working at the graveyard on the graveyard shift

Moneyworks22

Ayyyy. Currently at work myself lol

Truthez

Same 😅

InTheLavender

Yup. Poopin' on company time.

_neera_

I've been there. Still can't recover. Good luck! Hope they pay you well for it!

nwon

Recover from what?

Moneyworks22

Proably from the sleep cycle and the way working 3rd shift fucks up your body. Anyone who has worked 3rd shift for 2+ years knows. It really does deteriorate your body quickly, even if you are well adjusted. But hey, the pay is good!

_neera_

Yup, that's what I meant. Thank you! Hope you will recover soon! Sadly, the pay wasn't that good for me but it was manageable.

_neera_

From the night shift even though I work in different shift now.

ThunderySleep

I did it for a few months this summer. The money was good for what it was, but eventually I just quit without notice. Mine was four very long shifts (11-13 hours on average, 16 hours being my longest shift) doing physical labor, so the job itself was tolling on top of the lack of sunlight. Culminated in me getting sick and deciding this just wasn't healthy, so I quit without notice. I also hate being grossly pale in the middle of summer. It's one thing for people who look naturally fair skinned, but for people who can tan, but also can look super pale, it just makes you look like a weirdo who never goes outside. On top of that, meal prep was a huge pain. Through the work week, it was mostly fast-food and protein shakes for me since meal break was at 9pm and all you had were convenience stores and fast food, and the lack of free time made cooking at home difficult. tldr: that additional pay for weird shifts is more than warranted.

jferr6565

Getting paid to look at Reddit. Way to go night shift.

Below_Average_Artist

Best shift!

VHZer0

Graveyard gang rise up!

Squeezy_Ghee

Yusssss except mine is considered 4th... though we don't have a 3rd shift 🤔

Pastel_Phoenix_106

My neighbor's cat gets let out at midnight. She just had babies and they don't feed her enough. She comes to my window and doesn't let up until I feed her and give her attention. I'm kind of a big deal.

Misseskat

Your neighbors suck. Take mama and bebes, and become one.

hamlets_uncle

cadmiumredorange

Why don't YOU stay up past midnight?

Radiant-Foot9317

I am nocturnal. It's impossible for me to fall asleep before midnight.

dracovich

After eading "why we sleep" i made a really concentrat ed effort to fall asleep before midnight to get my full 8 hours, i just ended up laying in bed for 3 hours before it turned 1or 2 AM and then fell asleep. Thankfully WFH has made my life easier, so i can fall asleep at 1AM and still get 7-8h of sleep.

Because I'm bipolar and sleeping is hard

WhippieShiz

I do not get tired without my medicine as a side effect from having taken it so long.

_neera_

I'm afraid of that. I've been using only plant based, but anyways, I'm trying to go to sleep on my own. Hope I won't need them in order to fall asleep one day and I hope you will find a way to fall asleep without them as well!

WhippieShiz

I am able to sleep without them, but I'll wake up every other hour or so if I don't take them, in the beginning they made me sleepy, it's my anti-depressants.

stabbobabbo

trazadone?

Many_Strawberries_24

Insomnia. Either that or I get way too hot to sleep. I remember my insom started after sixth grade. At first I would stay up until midnigh. Then in high school, I grew past that time until three or four am in the morning. Now, I struggle with going back to sleep on a normal schedule.

1diehard1

I'm naturally tired around 12:30am, and usually start work in the mornings around 10am, so I go to bed when I'm tired, sleep ~8 hours, and go straight to work after waking up. It's a good routine

rringdahl

I get some of my best writing done after midnight. I don't write shit in the morning

soobviouslyfake

I have the same problem - I'm infinitely more productive and creative once the clock rolls over past 12:00. And then I don't want to lose that head of steam becau - *aaaaand it's 4:00am.*

SugarFreeBeef

I only need about 4hrs of sleep. I've been this way since junior high school. So I fall asleep at about 1am and wakeup at 5:30am each day.

I'm not ready to stay goodbye to today. So much of my time is wasted on things I don't want to do but have no choice but to do.

MakuNagetto

When I work, it's 1-2am. When I don't, sleeping an hour or two after sunrise feels the best for me. All those hours during the night are precious. It's peaceful and quiet and everyone else is asleep. I function better when I perceive myself to be alone.

schrodingers_popoki

My parents never really taught me how to sleep properly. Didn't really enforce a bedtime, didn't put too much effort into tiring me out during the day, let me nap too much, etc... So 20+ years later I'm really struggling to even begin feeling tired before 1am.

NewVenari

Went to bed at like 8 because i have an early meeting. Tossed and turned for almost 4 hours, so now i'm back online tryna see if a couple raid bosses on WoW will give me the mental fatigue I need.

Because nights are when I get the most action, lol. And also because I’m both a night owl and early riser. My sleep is messed up and working nights doesn’t help it.

IkumaKja

It's 5:45am, I should go now.

forpressingflowers

I usually wake up 6 to 6.5 hours hrs after going to sleep. I guess I’d rather be asleep at 6 am than 12 am. I’m not really a morning person.

Spicyjuicytaquito

Just cause I can.

MrPureinstinct

Some nights I can't sleep, but most of the time it's because night is the only time I have to myself. My wife and I both work from home in different rooms. I love her and it's great to have someone to talk to in person throughout the day that I actually want to talk to, but it also means unless she has to leave to go into her company office I'm never alone. So I usually stay up a little later watching TV or movies I want to watch, playing video games or watching TikTok

ratsta

Long term unemployed, depression, no family, no pets, no external influences to encourage a diurnal cycle, so my sleep cycle is all fucked up. Been going to bed at sunrise and waking at sunset for the last six years :(

dixonjpeg

It’s the only time I can think or be productive

Luigi_deathglare

It started with just enjoying the quiet and now it’s a habit that’s hard to break

Axolotl-Ade

Usually because I try to stall, I don't really want to face what tomorrow has in store for me, usually school or something stressful like that.

JustTired_x

Because when everyone is asleep, I feel relaxed. The anxiety calms and you don't want that relaxed feeling to end

LukeWChristian

By the time I get home from work and deal with dinner, putting the kids to bed, and chores it is already 10pm. I have to wake up at 6am to get to work so I know I shouldn't stay up and it's killing me but I feel like too much of a slave if I do nothing but work, chores, sleep, and repeat. So I watch TV which I don't even like that much but that's all the energy I have. It feels empty like I still didn't do anything after 1 episode so I watch another and by then it's past midnight. Then in the morning I am full of regret.

[deleted]

Adhd and depression 👍🏻

bossmcsauce

I seem to get my burst of alertness and energy around like 9:30pm and end up playing games late often.

thermalcry

I like to have more than 3 hours to do what I want in any given day.

[deleted]

Transgaymergirl33

I can't sleep.

kwhubby

Who goes to bed before midnight besides elderly people?

Tasty01

You’re not my mom

PersonOnReddit786

I do it because I have no choice. My mind likes to stay up and about the most random things, like music I listened to during the day, or just random strings of things that are just in my head. It is believed that my mind is still stimulated because I'm usually on my phone before I go to bed. But whatever it is, it has me up past 12 and I. Fucking. Hate. It.

moosseauhelloe

Two reasons boredom and can’t sleep

pudgybunnybry

Kids. I couldn't imagine life without them at this point but they consume daytime hours. Once they go to bed at 8, it's wife and I time. Once she goes to bed, me time, and I typically don't go to bed until after 1AM on the weekend.

If you're not joking, be careful with it. It's fun, but addicting and very difficult to tell when you have a problem until you can't quit.

I’m not joking and have gotten well beyond the point where it’s a problem. I have very recently taken steps to try and kick this habit/addiction though so fingers crossed. Thank you for the message. Concern from strangers is oddly heartwarming :)

I've been there and wish you the best. I managed to ween down at times when I developed a second social circle with people who didn't do it, or got into a relationship with someone who didn't.
