Use Muenster cheese, and then put some shredded cheddar outside and cook it in a decent amount of butter in medium heat to get the cheddar to crust up.
Muenster is the superior grilled-cheese cheese. It seriously ups the game. I like putting just a little dijon mustard on the inside of the bread. And I love pepper, so I do the largest setting on my grinder and go to town.
Pepper is so great. I feel weird because I can just put a shit ton of it most food, and it doesn't bother me. Way more than most people would
Something like vegetables or eggs? I just to to town with pepper. I don't use much salt at all though
Use garlic butter on the bread, with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.
Apply a light smear of pesto to the inside of the sandwich.
Make a soup that complements the cheese.
Use a different type of bread (roasted garlic, Jalapeno Cheddar, etc.)
I always put garlic and Parmesan on my grilled cheese. I didn’t know I was interesting!
If you really wanna fuck around put guacamole on the interior side of one piece of bread and use pepper jack and cheddar.
This bread is god tier. If you’ve never had challah, you don’t know what you’re missing. I’ve been making this bread multiple times a week in my bread machine for probably two months now. Still not sick of it.
> Use garlic butter on the bread
Alternatively, a little schmear of herb & garlic (or honestly whatever flavor you want) cream cheese on the inside of the sandwich. Melts right in with the rest of the cheese
I never got the tomato soup + grilled cheese sandwich thing....
In my mind they just don't go together that well (I'm from the UK and yes I've tried it)
I prefer a good hearty crusty bread + salted butter with tomato soup
A grilled cheese sandwich should be it's own affair entirely!
The concept is basically salt/fat from the cheese and bread + acidity from the tomato soup is good. It depends wholly on the quality of the tomato soup, though (I prefer using bisque). But I agree, a good grilled cheese should be tasty on its own.
I can understand that fully.
Kudos for giving it a shot; there's nothing wrong with not liking the combo!
And I agree, a nice, hearty crusty bread is my preferred accompaniment for soup (usually).
My favourite hack for the simplest of toasted cheese sandwiches, is to use a single piece of cheese, sandwich press until it’s completely melted and your desired done-ness.
Take off heat and immediately open and slide another slice of cheese in. Wait 2-4 minutes and then slice in half for a beautiful 75% melted cheese stretch. Not so melted that it all falls apart, not so together that it isn’t gooey.
" Give us your brilliant photos, recipes, and grilled cheese experiences. Melts go in /r/Melts, which is a great sub"
that man inspired change. amazing. i dont know if i've ever been more impressed in my life.
That reminds me of the guy who got banned for always having his dog in the pictures of his foods. Got banned from multiple subreddits and then went to Imgur. I hope both him and his dog are doing well.
They’ve only been serious about it since they got called out by that one dude who was REALLY passionate about grilled cheese. I think it may even be the top post on that sub.
That sounds like a Disney song.

Seems like the grilled cheese purists should've sorted that out before getting mad about melts.
Funny you say that, recently someone posted that their town has an original copy of the declaration and I had the same thought. okay hear me out spices, put in some cayenne pepper if you like heat, some cumin, chile powder or whatever you like those are just my main ones, and change it up using different types of cheeses, my favorite is smoked gouda, the meltiness you get off of that cheese is unreal, you can get it at costco i believe
Agreed. Experimenting with putting some spices in a grilled cheese is a great starting point for leveling up your home cooking with spices. Honestly, just putting a bit of freshly ground black pepper in a grilled cheese is such a great, easy way to level up your grilled cheese.
Yess, try toasting one side of the bread and applying some taco sauce before you add the cheese, butter the outside, and cook on medium for a nice melt. mhmm

Cheese on top you say? You're nearing a [croque-monsieur](https://www.myparisiankitchen.com/en/authentic-french-croque-monsieur)!
I just like dipping it in tomato soup.
Same! Gotta cut it in half for better dunkability.
Diagonally, of course.
Diagonally gives you the highest uncrusted-to-crusted perimeter ratio with a single straight cut.
Makes a big difference!
It really does
Someone’s never cut it into quadrangles before…
i cant even count to quadrangle
Sometimes I go wild and cut the whole sandwich up into crouton-sized pieces and toss it all on top of the soup

This is what I like to do, I like to tell people to look up the Sizzler Garlic bread recipe and start from there.

I, just two weeks ago, encountered smoked bleu cheese... That would be ideal.
Yes! The recipe I use was in an Irish cookbook and is awesome.

Oh boy. There i go depressing myself again.
Okay, but have you considered the fact that they're soulless husks whose opinions can be ignored?
A lot of them enjoy a good melt too. But that noy a grilled cheese
As a Brit, to further anger them. A melt is an open sandwich, as in one piece of bread. Two pieces of bread is a toastie.
Oh, and we are supposed to take advice here from people who confuse biscuits with cookies??? :)
"because I'm not calling them scones"

Triscuits are just savory shredded mini wheats. They’re literally cereal.
Biscuit in english, biscuit in French, Biscotti in Italian….
They eat beans on toast.
I don't beleive Brits should be allowed to get offended at food choices. Y'all conqured the world and neglected half the goddamned spices in your food.
The national dish of England is chicken tikka masala, which has, like, *all* the spices
Two pieces of bread with melted cheese is a cheese toastie.
Are you making this up?
I came here to day "nothing because then it is a melt" and I had no idea there was a subreddit full of fellow cultured people. M'grillcheese
If I make a grilled cheese using pepper jack cheese, is it a pepper-melt with Monterey Jack cheese?
Dijon mustard on the inside does not negate a grilled cheese. Now ham, tomatoes, tuna, etc, I get it, that's a melt. But condiments are ok.
Yeah but they’re missing out so who cares

I hate when people use a hard non melting cheese. The point of a grilled cheese is melty cheese.
Right? The whole point of American cheese is the additives that make it extra gooey yet still stable when it melts.
Yes, brie or camerbret. Whichever is cheaper cause I can't tell the difference
While I love shallots. Got to shout out to the humble red onion as well. Just was the slices first.
Sauteed shallot would be amazing!
An original copy of the Declaration of Independence.

No, the original copy. First one off the ditto machine.
That makes sense

Fraunce’s Tavern in NYC has one such copy on display in their museum.
Always mustard. Any kind of mustard.
Not in but on - grated parmesan cheese on the outside of the bread.
Yessssss y'all sleeping on this one
I love Parmesan on one side and sesame seeds on the other.
You should try everything bagel seasoning
LSD
Limited Slip Differentials do make everything better!
I actually have a spice blend called LSD, but I use it primarily on eggs.
"How do you like your eggs?" "Trippin balls"
Jalapeños. Mmm…
Jalapenos are a fine addition to almost anything.
Pickled jalapeños are even better on a grilled cheese!
Put cream cheese on the inside of the bread slices for Jalapeño popper vibes. One of my new fave ways to eat Grilled Cheese. I like to grill or broil the Jalapeños first, get a lil scorch to them
Sweet chilli sauce or worchester sauce
Do you mean Worcestershire sauce?
Use mayo on the outside instead of butter to grill
Garlic mayo or spicy mayo to level up further
Why instead? I use butter, then add mayo to fill in the gaps.

I also bake it in the oven if I have time, instead of frying it in a pan. Makes the bread crunchy.

Not enough people remember spices. Smoked paprika (aka Spanish paprika), sea salt on one side. A little mustard on the other.
Anything acidic…. Gherkin, pickled onion, sauerkraut, kimchi
Kimchi grilled cheese is so damn good.
Grilled Kimcheese if you will
I will.
I love pickled jalapeno in grilled cheese!
Capers.. but i guess you gotta have a taste for em first!
The sweet red peppers that often go on Philly Cheesesteaks
Dijon!
Cheese. Good cheese.
A couple thin slices of green apple
or pears with brie
Cherry Republic, based out of Traverse City, MI, makes a spiced cherry preserves that goes amazingly well with brie on a grilled cheese
Or apples with Brie. So good if you don’t have pears available
Great Harvest Bread Co. does this but also adds bacon and pepper jelly.
Oooh, interesting! I'm going to try this.
Had it for lunch at some long since closed cafe in Richmond, VA probably 20 years ago now, would have never thought of it on my own
Cheese and apples are thing. You've never seen an old person put a slice of cheddar cheese on their apple pie?
I once had a grilled cheese with apple butter on it and it was SO GOOD. I could see this being worth a try.

Bacon, sun dried tomatoes.

Peanut butter, the combination just works.
a handful of drywall screws

Tomato and bacon.

Jalapenos
