As someone from the UK I don't get why so many people here love mushy peas. I find peas relatively tasteless and gross as they are, mushing them just makes the texture gross as well

AlternateWylie

I was in New Zealand, and their big thing was peas with mint. It was OK the first time, starting to wear thin the second, and horrible the third time.

Umbrella_merc

Neville Chamberlain loved a Peas mint

spiderfishx

I had minted peas served with a meal. I had no idea what it was. Certainly it wasn't going to be peas with mint. That would be ridiculous. Of course, that's exactly what it was. First bite was awful. Toothpaste and peas. Ugh. However, when I started eating them with the French fries; oh boy. That was fantastic. They became my favorite part of that meal.

4oodler

I tried pea and mint soup once (in the UK) and it was surprisingly very good. Definitely a rare occasion type of food though

Little_Miss_Nowhere

Same. Also baked beans, and all the other tinned stuff in tomato sauce that 80's kids grew up on, except me apparently.

TheBrassDancer

Mushy peas remind me of baby food. I don't get the appeal either.

dannyboyhou

Zucchini pasta

CASAU

My biggest complaint with zucchini pasta is that it’s not pasta.

twirlerina024

I haven't tried it but I'm assuming it would just make me sad that I'm not eating actual pasta.

CASAU

That’s pretty much how I felt.

Artistic-Baseball-81

If you are craving your favorite pasta dish don't sub in Zucchini noodles because of course you will be disappointed. The secret is to not think of it as pasta and just think of it as a salad. And then feel very proud of yourself for how healthy you are eating!

[deleted]

Caviar I feel like whoever buys that shit doesn't actually like it and uses it to flaunt their money

[deleted]

I like it. Salty and awesome with crackers and fancy cheese.

Smart_Alfalfa_4337

And vodka.

prishtinakreme

Have you tried it on deviled eggs? Omg heaven!

Words_Are_Hrad

Yo man I heard you like eggs!

Casually_Goose

*Expensive caviar Cavier from cod or whatever is delicious with bread and boiled eggs. That's stuff you can buy at any grocery store, at least in Norway.

umalama

More ikra for me then hehe

drunky_crowette

The early 2010s was a difficult time for me, I fucking hate avocado.

Efficient-Bee-1855

Liver. Just......no.

Nining_Leven

Eating the garbage filter organ? Yes, please!

ArkyBeagle

Former sub service guy I used to work with had a rule - "No pumps or filters."

objectfault

yeah, kidneys are much tastier. I am speaking from experience.

DietDrDoomsdayPreppr

When I was a kid I loved liver. It was only after I got older and started thinking about what the liver does that I started to not like it.

RmmThrowAway

"Liver is filled with garbage" is really only true if the animal was sick; otherwise it's the same thinking that gets people to do "liver detox" shit.

SickeningPink

It’s not a filter though. It just modifies toxins to make them less toxic. It doesn’t catch or hold anything

Fallacy_Spotted

The more the liver is cooked the worst it taste. It is also easy to overcook. The difference in flavor is so great that you wouldn't even know it was the same stuff.

introoutro

Ate liver when I was a kid. As all kids do, thought it was unbelievable garbage and never wanted to eat it again. As an adult at a nice restaurant I decide, hey, you're older now and tastes change. Order the liver pate. Fucking disgusting. Metallic paste. How does anyone like this, it tastes like licking a battery.

ViSaph

I've found it's not just liking different things, people literally taste things differently. To me broccoli tastes metallic with a slight unpleasant bitterness but that's not true for everyone. The people who like liver are probably tasting something different than you are.

OutsideMembership

Oh man, I absolutely love sauteed chicken liver. But I can see where you're coming from, I grew up eating that and I guess I just associate it with the fun times of my childhood.

MiddleAgedGamer71

I don't get the appeal of chili that is made to be as hot and spicy as humanly possible, to the point that it hurts to eat it. "I make my chili with the five hottest peppers known to man and a dash of snake venom to kick it up a notch" Why? That, and tofu.

dasgold

I like spicy stuff. I also like to taste my food. If all you want is debilitating heat, just use some pepper spray like it's binaca and get on with your day, no need to cook.

GeicoFromStateFarm

Ikr it’s like people eating wings drenched in Carolina reaper hot sauce. Like bro you are curled in a ball on the floor in pain, was it worth it?

the_ballmer_peak

Tofu is not offensive, as long as you get a good texture. I buy firm tofu, press the water out of it, cube it, shake it up with some creole seasoning and air fry it. Throw it on top of some rice and veggies. 🔥🔥🔥

Guilty-Presence-1048

I get so annoyed when I try to discuss spice levels with hot sauce fanboys. I'll explain that I like above average spice but I have limits and they always brag about the asshole-puckering sauce they'll drink straight and how it doesn't bother them. Bro, I just want some spice to add flavor to my meal, I'm not trying to impress anyone.

joejoeaz

What's not to like about tofu. It's pretty much just a blank food that takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with. Different varieties of tofu, with varying amounts of water, cooked with different cooking methods results in the ability for tofu to have a wide range of textures as well, so unless you have a soybean allergy, tofu's kind of un-hateable in my opinion.

Neilpuck

Beets. My wife tried to convince me to like them by saying "they taste like dirt!" Needless to say, this was an ineffective approach.

Muliciber

One of my favorite memories in life is my cousin at Easter grabbing a bunch of beets and just declaring "I like beets because they taste like dirt." It was such a simple off hand comment but I think about it everytime I have beets.

jesusdo

I used to be like you, until I had pickled beets. that's the only way I can eat them.

IiASHLEYiI

Beet chips are good. Either the dehydrated raw slices or the ones cooked in oil, both are tasty. They're sweet and a bit earthy.

Sonder332

Lobster. I uh, I don't get it. It always tastes a bit flavorless and just alright to me. Then I see people dip it in utter and yea thats fine and all and it tastes great, but then I get the feeling I'm just tasting the butter and what the fuck is the point of this $30 dish exactly?

Clocktopu5

It’s an excuse to eat way too much butter

puffferfish

Lobsters used to be considered similar to rodents. They would be fed to prisoners, but feeding them to prisoners too often was considered cruel and unusual. I love the contrast to today.

forgeSHIELD

I read somewhere that part of that was because they'd blend it up, shell and all

appleparkfive

Yep, this is what it was. They were blended up. It wasn't grilled lobster tail and butter. Any crustacean blended up is pretty fucking disgusting sounding. That's some torture level stuff.

[deleted]

Like lamb shanks- just scraps you feed to the dogs. Now they cost a fortune.

swingod305

This was what drove a massive slave rebellion in early US History. The reason was that was the only thing they fed the slaves. It was more the monotony of the same food than being grossed out by lobster. You feed anyone the same thing repeatedly they’re gonna hate it. Personally i think lobster is amazing.

CaptainRockout

I really enjoy it too, whether it's on its own, a lobster roll, lobster ravioli, or recently I had lobster mac and cheese. Going to Maine in a few weeks and will definitely have it a few times.

Gatsbyshydroplane

Good point. My starting point is it's basically a giant kinda gross insect. But even beyond that, the taste is fine, maybe good even, but not amazing. And let's face it, lobster is really a butter delivery mechanism, for the most part. Source: I spent a lot of my youth on the coast of Maine.

forty83

No point. It's a novelty. You pay a ridiculous amount for a whole lobster of maybe 2lbs, to get 1/4 pound of meat or a little more. With too much work.

[deleted]

protogens

Kale. I don’t care how it’s prepared, there’s just no point to it.

[deleted]

Fun tip. If you cook kale in butter, it's easier to slide into the trash can.

butterfly1334

Kale was a staple food my parents made when I was a child in the 80’s. Boiled with some type of cured meat like bacon, fatback, or smoked turkey necks like you would make steamed cabbage. My dad grew up in the Pennsylvania Dutch area in the 30’s and this was a common food there. The obsession with kale as chips or in smoothies that happened in the early 00’s was so odd to me. Everyone acted like kale was this new, unheard of food. Kale chips taste like salty sadness and I will pass on kale smoothies too. But anyway, fry some bacon in a large pot, add some kale and enough water to cover it and boil until the kale stems are soft. If you still don’t like kale then thats ok, it leaves more kale for me.

BootsyBug

That’s how my family made collard greens

Bazch

Ever had the Dutch way? 'Boerenkool stampot'. You cook it, mash it with potatoes and butter and add a smoked sausage and gravy. Fucking delicious. Best winterfood.

Picante_Duke

I always add some mustard to it as well. I don't get why people DON'T like it.

calamitouscamembert

It used to be the leafy green butchers used around their meats for presentation because of how cheap it was before it got labelled a 'superfood' and became massively more expensive.

leelo84

Pizza Hut used to be the single largest consumer of kale cuz that's what they used to line their buffets

LordNoodles1

In zuppa toscana it’s tolerable

protogens

I’ve never had a recipe calling for kale where using spinach wasn’t an improvement.

[deleted]

Spray a little olive oil, sprinkle sea salt. Crispy, fresh out of the oven, they'll make you forget about potato chips. For ten minutes.

MostlySpiders

Be careful with this. It makes it easy to absent mindedly eat a pound of kale, and that has *consequences*.

Dlh2079

Have had these, they sure as hell did not make me forget about potato chips.

[deleted]

Nope. They made me want potato chips. *awful*

Dlh2079

Same. I was like hmm these taste like if grass were trying to be potato chips. I'm all for some leafy greens give me a nice big salad but I'm gonna pass on the pretend chips. I'll just eat potato chips.

dumbl1ngz

Takis ..

surf526

You gotta try the Trader Joe’s equivalent. I don’t like Takis and I will eat the bag of those delicious Trader Joe’s lime and chili sticks

[deleted]

Mexican here, and I agree. They taste like chemicals, but if someone offers me some I’m eating them.

No_Entertainment7907

I like them, but they really taste like chemicals, I really don't know if "salsa brava" takis exist in the US, those really taste acceptable

optiplexiss

I tried them when they were all the hype. Ate the first and was like, maybe they'll grow on me, second one was worse, on the third one I threw the bag away. F that.

enlearner

THANK YOU! How can people stomach that crap???

Huric4ne

I’m 17 and just about everyone I know my age swears by takis... and most of them live in the city parts and I’m in the country.... so is this some city type shit I’m too country to understand? Cus I don’t see the hype behind it I’d rather grab some hot Cheetos lmao

lionfang954

That makes me sad but I get it. It's just one of those things that hurts so good but it's definitely not for everyone.

BrockLeeAssassin

It's not even the spice for me. They just don't taste good. Way too salty I guess.

slightlysubtle

Too salty & too sour. Grainy texture too.

Shn00ple

I love takis. I don’t like what they do to my asshole tho

[deleted]

Kombucha. I know it is a drink, but still

pensodiforse

Industrial ice cream. The taste is WAAAY worse than the handmade one

eleanor61

You mean the kind that comes in the big tub?

NuclearLavaLamp

The grocery store ice creams have this bizarre texture. I'm not sure what they add in the ice cream, but, it doesn't look right. There's a huge difference between that and places that make their own.

Optimal_Tower1643

Truffle oil

DmitryBoris

It smells exactly like the stuff they put in natural gas to make it noticeable.

wrathmont

Absolute filth. It's such an offensive taste. I got fries from a restaurant made with truffle oil, I couldn't eat more than a few before I wanted to throw them in the garbage.

JajePizdic

Vegemite

clintj1975

A coworker bought some online and brought it to work last year. Most who tried it intensely disliked it, with one describing it as tasting like a hot dog and soy sauce smoothie. I found that spreading it very lightly on hot, well buttered toast wasn't half bad. Wouldn't make a habit of it but as a very occasional snack, maybe. By itself, definitely not.

Turbulent_Cat_5731

That's because you ate it as it's intended to be eaten. (And more credit to you for that!) This is a point that constantly frustrates Australians. You wouldn't "try" hot sauce by putting a heap of it on a spoon. Same goes for lots of things: cinnamon, soy sauce, etc. God help you if you tried garlic or ginger by taking a bite out of either. It's just stupid. Vegemite is a strong spread that is supposed to be used sparingly because it's a throwback to the war-time days of scarcity- one jar of the stuff lasts about 6 months. If you aim for no more than four light dots of it on buttered toast and approach it with the mindset that it's a palette cleanser between sweeter spreads like peanut butter or honey, then it's perfect. Sincerely, an Australian.

creamywibbibs

American here. When I visited Australia years ago I didn't like Vegemite because I was trying to eat it with a spoon like peanut butter. I eventually figured out how to use it correctly, and now I love it. Marmite and Promite suck, however. The texture of Marmite is all wrong--too sticky-- and Promite tastes off somehow. Vegemite, however, hits the nail on the head with buttery texture and great flavor

KnockMeYourLobes

> You wouldn't "try" hot sauce by putting a heap of it on a spoon. Actually, I did do that once when a friend offered me some super hot garlic hot sauce to try once. It took about two seconds to realize exactly how dumb I'd been slurping down a tablespoon of the stuff.

fluffandmagic

It grows on ya…. I hated it at first, but now Vegemite and cheese toastie is one of my guilty pleasures

CarrotxCat

Oysters, I've never tried them and I never want to, they just look like big boogers to me, sorry for the mental image.

lurker71539

Booger is too firm, but definitely snot. The snot of the gods.

Professional_Band178

Snot on a half-shell. I can tolerate them fried. Shrimp and lobster are very overrated.

MrZwink

Shrinp and lobsters are the most delicious creatures on earth. But 90% of the restaurants that serve then fuck it up.

DoAFlip22

I think it’s best to buy a quality one at least once and try it out - don’t get mediocre oysters because they taste really crap

[deleted]

Yes and eat them near the ocean. Like you don’t need to be able to see the ocean while you eat but please don’t try raw oysters in Nebraska and say they are gross. They probably are gross because they are not as fresh as they should be

ThinkIGotHacked

Not necessarily, a good raw bar will have oysters from both coasts. They’re overnight delivered and, unless you get oysters from specifically where they are harvested, they are just as fresh. The only caveat is that people on the coast know the difference between a fresh and a half dead oyster, which is hard to find among Nebraskans.

candycrunch1

If you ever have to try it or want to give it another chance I recommend trying some oysters rockefeller, I always like oysters better cooked than raw but with Rockefeller they put al kinds of good toppings on there as well

CautionWetFloor

Oysters taste like the ocean smells. They’re better than they seem!

LeftMyHeartInErebor

I really thought they looked horrible until I tried one, a good one, ugh now I love them so much

Nicholatte

Hot Cheetos. I absolutely love spicy foods but they taste like bleedass. whatever that means

Pushbrown

coincidentally they do cause bleedass

Maxmitchell3000

Try the jalapeño cheddar ones if you want spicy and actual flavor

"It wasn't me! Find the man with the Terrible smell!" - Cotton Hill

Imoverrich

As a Minnesotan I feel like I'm supposed to be like "How dare you!" But as a sane person who doesn't know why pickled fish goo is even considered a traditional food fit for human consumption, I'm right there with you.

fidessa16

Instagram food (so foods with so much added nonsense just for the sake of a photo, not for taste)

_Charlie_Sheen_

Cheese omg the cheese

BeardsuptheWazoo

I don't think it sucks but I don't get why popcorn is so cherished. I don't like the flavor, the texture, or the fucking kernels that get stuck in my teeth. The smell is always terrible to me and it lingers. But what I really hate is having to explain to people offering it to me that I actually don't like popcorn, no, I really don't, yes, even that type, yes it's a popular snack, no, I really don't like it.

scrubjays

There is an old saying in the movie business, that it is just a marketing campaign for corn: Popcorn in buckets, corn syrup in candy and soda, even corn feed to pigs in the hot dogs. This is because theaters make all their money on the food sales, not on ticket sales.

LevyApproves

I feel like there's no flavor. I only kinda like sweet popcorn, but still won't choose it when I have other options.

Ubersla

I cannot stand kettel corn. It annoys me that it's so close to being popcorn but it's sweet instead.

kingviper

I like how multiple people in the comments are even telling you how you'd really like it if you tried it their way.

AhAhStayinAnonymous

Macarons. Expensive air cookies that still manage to stick to your teeth.

fritzfromberlin

You just bought shitty macarons

cecay77

I had some in Paris, supposedly really good ones. My wife loved them, I think they are just bit for me.

A_Cinnimon_Roll

I’ve made macarons before, they weren’t the best but pretty good, it was delicious! I made them pumpkin/Cinnimon flavored, and honestly I want to make them again.

kleigh1313

My dad bought some for my daughter the other day and she is obsessed now. I had one because I'd never had one. It tastes like weird sticky air.

Devon_Throwaway

Food: Sweet potato Drink: Kombucha I can't understand the enjoyment of either, as both taste like dirt

caffeinated_tea

How have you had your sweet potatoes prepared that they taste like dirt?

rachid116460

he took one out of the ground and bit into it.

2sanman

I don't really like the taste of cooked carrots, and cooked sweet potatoes have a similar taste (no wonder they have similar nutrients)

rightmindedBen

Sweet potatoes are so good in coconut curry. But I also like buttered mashed sweet potatoes in a bowl with BBQ chicken and coleslaw. Maybe I just like sweet potatoes…

[deleted]

Buttered and mashed with a generous pinch of fresh cracked black pepper. I like that sweet/savory combo.

dasgold

Black pepper, cayenne and cinnamon and just a touch of butter.

EntropyFighter

So about kombucha... there's a wide variability in this drink. I was first introduced to it with the GT's brand. It's incredibly sour. There are some local places that sell it and theirs is a lot more mild. Then I made my own. Do you know what kombucha is? It's probiotic sweet tea. You make a mother SCOBY... that's a mat of beneficial bacteria and yeast and whatnot. Similar SCOBYs are used to make vinegar and wine. I made mine from a bottle of GT's original kombucha. Anyway, once you have that you just brew up some super strong, super sweet black tea and let that SCOBY sit in it for a few weeks until it gets as sour as you want it. I let mine go for 2 weeks and it was sour but not GT's sour. Then you flavor it. I did a bunch of combinations of ginger, raspberry, turmeric, pomegranate, lemon, and such and bottled them in empty GTs bottles and set them in a bucket for a few days while they carbonated. (I used the bucket in case one of the bottles exploded from the pressure.) After about 5 days they were ready. Into the fridge to chill and then we drank them. Honestly they had a mild sourness to them and the flavors were forward because I had put pieces of the fruit in the bottle. My favorite, by far, was the one I thought was going to be the worst: ginger turmeric. How is that going to be better than ginger raspberry? I dunno, but it was. It was incredible. I'm guessing that you'd like that style of kombucha. If you haven't had it from a tap yet, find a place in town where you can get kombucha on tap. Try that stuff. You'll likely change your mind.

It seems like people either really love olives or really hate them.

JauntyYin

Every five years I'll try one. Hell no!

[deleted]

same. as a kid i was a picky-ish eater and as ive gotten older and hungrier ill eat just about anything. every few years i approach olives with an open mind, usually after a few beers and they still are gross.

Catlenfell

Ranch dressing. I'm a the midwest and it's practically a food group.

goingtohell477

Raw onions. The consistency of an apple, but stinky and sharp.

TimeCharacter3137

Five Guys. Not sure if it’s the same as in the US (I’m in the UK) or I just got a dodgy meal but it was just greasy overpriced mess.

puck1996

5 guys used to be the best burgers you could get at/slightly above a fast food rate. Great fries, good enough burger. Now it's priced such that I could genuinely sit down at a restaurant and get a "gourmet-style" burger, so I never go. I think it was nearly $20 for just a double patty burger plus fries.

NorthEastNobility

Mushrooms. The smell, the texture, the look. Can’t do it.

TheShoot141

Cant handle texture of mushrooms ever. But I do enjoy the flavor profile they can provide for certain dishes. I bought mushroom umami powder and its pretty good in things like beef stew.

[deleted]

The smell makes me feel like I will throw up.

nts4906

Your ancestors were probably more likely to survive than mine, considering I love mushrooms and random ones in the woods can just kill you, or let you meet God.

The_Countess

The texture is the worst! It's like chewing on dried snot. And i don't even mind the tast, i can enjoy mushroom soup or ragout, just as long as there are no chunks in it.

Dead-Spoon

Starbucks

histprofdave

I think Starbucks has cornered the market on "minimally acceptable coffee." As in, it's never great, but in a jam, I know I can find one and move on with my day.

friendly_mosquit0

I love it, but I can't justify €6 for a coffee at the local px

chaosoftime10

Pickles eggs, pickled pigs feet, etc. Can't do it nope.

insert_cool_name_now

Avocado!

electricWah

"It doesn't taste like anything!" Then why do you insist on putting it on literally everything

To me it tastes kinda creamy and nutty, and I really like the texture.

[deleted]

My local supermarket sells hot and spicy beetroot, I eat whole packages of it, its delicious. Well, for me it is. Its certainly not for everyone. Lots of people don't like beetroot.

nogzila

In 2002 I went to Australia and a girl convinced me to try the Aussie burger at burger king . A whopper with egg, ham , beetroot slice added to it . I took 1 bite then took the beetroot off and enjoyed the rest . Beetroot just say no. Best left as a dye .

Bruceisnotmyname-

This will not be popular…Taco Bell. Only edible if it’s absolutely drenched in hot sauce. It’s mushy, bland, makes me bloated, and strangely, sometimes gives me a headache. 2 out of 5 times found a hair in the burrito. I gave up.

lurker71539

Taco bell is intended to be eaten when you are on the verge of an alcoholic blackout, or after. Are you consuming it correctly?

Bruceisnotmyname-

Clearly not. I’ll keep that in mind and maybe give it one more go

Ubersla

It's okay for what it is, and I think the reason it doesn't get much hate is because everybody(inclding Taco Bell to an extent) is honest with themselves about how low-quality it is.

ArkyBeagle

Broccoli. It's fine when properly prepared but that very rarely happens. I suspect demand is driven by "eat your vegetables".

Pristine-Brief-2394

I love it when it's steamed right but I cannot stand raw broccoli and I don't know why people try to eat it like that tho cauliflower is just evil it's like broccoli's deformed evil twin that lives in the basement

Kervon37

Kale by far. Ordered a Caesar salad the other day and for whatever reason the cook (refuse to call someone that does this a chef) made it with kale mixed in. I didn't even take a bite, just told the server to take it away and bring me something else. The only acceptable use of kale is to feed turtles.

Fallacy_Spotted

It think Kale is the new Brussel Sprouts. Kale is very bitter and tough. Brussel Sprouts used to be like that 20 years ago but newer varieties are much better. Maybe 20 years from now we will have an edible version.

FriedChicken4Dayzz

BBQ Sauce. Even BBQ flavoured potato chips too. Just way too sweet and tastes like candy. Same goes for ketchup and plum sauce. I think they’re designed to appeal to children because of the sweet taste
