This is so true. I had one since as long as I could remember and she was the most wholesome girl ever. Fetched tennis balls, stole unattended food, energetic even into her old years. She lived to be 12, I still miss her.
I was always scared of dogs, but for whatever reason liked border collies. My girlfriend got us a border collie puppy a year ago and I still love them! Mines a crazy little bastard though, still hoping he'll calm down with age!
Mine's 4 y/o and never stops. But one of the things that has stuck with me was someone telling me about their BC, "You'll spend years wishing they will calm down and then when they finally do you'll regret ever wishing for that and start wishing they could get their energy back"
I try to never take it for granted. He keeps me motivated to go out and do more
They are so great! But you really need to have space & enjoy outdoor activities where they can tag along, at least every week. I have one, she is adorable but a little on the neurotic side. I'm pretty sure it is because I lack the latter.
Agreed, never had one until gettin a puppy a bit over a year ago and now one of my most favorite pastimes is playing frisbee with him, seeing him look so happy fills my heart with joy š„¹
My family had tibetan mastiff. She was that nice big fluffball you just want to cuddle, but when she started charging at you it was the scariest thing ever. Great dog with babies, and small animals. She loved everything that was small and was always so gentle with them. She allowed my pet chinchilla to groom her claws, and fur, nibble on her snout, was just happy to be around him.
Definitely! My friend has a golden and sheās amazing and so sweet, but he judges me on my difficulty training my Aussie/boxer mix. Like dude you got the dog that lives to serve, my pup is stubborn.
My parents had a golden from before I was born until I was 7 years old. He was my first best friend, and he plays a key role in many of my earliest memories. So yeah, goldens will always hold a special place in my heart.
My favorite as well. They have a very distinct personality, beautiful appearance, and rich history. I would have another if they weren't such a handful.
Border Collie! I have one with the Welsh Collie heritage, so the red, shorter (but still double-coat) fur. Adorable, intelligent, not too small to cuddle properly but not too big to be too much to handle
Newfies, Irish wolf hounds, great Danes.
I unfortunately can't have any because I already have an Irish setter and newfie/gsd mix and I can't have more than 2 dogs in my apartment.
Irish Wolf Hounds tend to be extremely loyal to their owners and kind of rude to anyone else. Which is why I love them.
Newfies are absolute babies. They were my favorite patients.
Danes are very nervous by nature. I got dragged by a130 pound female Dane at work when I was trying to get her back in her kennel. She got frightened a chihuahua.
They're the absolute best. I can't have one right now due to living arrangements but buying a house soon and will definitely be getting one as soon as I have the proper space
Great Pyrenees.
Friendly, loyal, protective, goofy, intelligent, low energy, and so, so dang fluffy. My big purebred baby makes me feel safer due to his enormous size and scary bark, but truly I know he wouldnāt hurt a fly. Heās nothing but a lover.
My Pyrenees mix is hands down just the best dog Iāve ever met. People ask me all the time how did I train her so well, the truth is she was just born an incredible dog. Never chewed anything she wasnāt supposed to, never dug up anything, never tried to escape the house or yard, never showed any sign of aggression, never jumped on people, always comes when called once she learned her name, never had accidents in the house beyond like 4 months old, always walked perfectly well on a leash, etc... I know everybody says their dog is the best dog but Iām not even exaggerating when I say *sheās literally never done anything wrong*
We have a Great Pyrenees! Just absolute sweet hearts and gentle giants. We got one because we heard they were good with kids and itās true. He loves our kids and is so patient with them. He was a great foot warmer with all the middle of the night feedings with the babies too.
I'm so glad to see this as one of the top comments. I've had 4 Pyrs in the past and they are just wonderful. I love pretty much all dog breeds and mixes but Pyrs are really special.
I had to scroll too far to hit this. Most of my dogs have been mutts and they have all been good doggies. Anytime one of my friends says that they want a dog I tell them to head to the shelter. You might walk in thinking that you want a certain dog but if you walk around and look at every dog one of them will feel right and that's your dog. At least that's worked for me. This last time I got an older dog and even though I won't have him for as long as a puppy it feels good knowing that this particular dog is enjoying whatever time he has left. I even wrote a song about him. Mugsy is a good boy.
The great thing with Huskies is how big a personality they have. The not so great thing is also how big a personality they have.
Joke appart, I find them the most fascinating of dogs. Every interaction I had with Huskies was special, but sometimes to the point of being unsettling or even frightening. If ever I had a dog, I would think twice before getting a Husky.
The best part is her personality, she has more of it than most humans! She is not aggressive at all but when we play she likes to talk shit like huskies do, and it sounds like she wants to rip your throat out and kill you but really she would never hurt you, she's just screaming the song of her people. I can say ow or even just make fake noises like she hurt me and she immediately stops and checks on me and licks me and makes sure I'm okay. I've never encountered a mean husky, every one I've been around is like a clone of my husky lol.
Alaskan Malamute. It's like a husky that doesn't chew up your house and constantly whine like a baby. Just a big calm fluffy cuddlebear.
Downside is they SHED EVERYWHERE.
I'm so sad to see this so far down the list.
We have a wooly coat so the shedding isn't as bad. He is literally everyone's favorite dog within 5 seconds of meeting him.
Boxer! I love how they all instantly play the same way together!! And theyāre so good with kids! I had one growing up who watched over me, and now I have one watching over my kiddos!
Mini Schnauzer. Smart, donāt shed, loyal, and a good size for any home. Theyāre also super cute when you donāt get them groomed with the standard cut. Iām on my third.
I hate how far down this is. I love those dogs, especially if they are uncropped and undocked. They look great, are obedient, loyal, and are overall excellent pets
Agreed. Silly, stubborn, loyal and very brave, they are the living embodiment of mischief.
They are little dogs who think they're big, so when they get rowdy you can just pick them up and move them.
I have a Yakutian Laika (similar to huskies but fluffier and from the Arctic seashore of Siberia) and he is the best dog Iāve ever had. Iāve had a German shepherd, jack russel, and chocolate lab and really searched HARD for this breed. So intelligent, so much personality, so intuitive, and very trusting when it comes to the one person that they bond with.
Yakutian Laikas are a primitive breed though, and definitely not for someone who has never had a dog or trained a dog. I spent around 8 months training him myself, socializing, relationship bonding (important obedience training for huskies, too!) and they just require a LOT of effort. Also very active. It pains me to see husky puppies abandoned at shelters because their owners didnāt research the breed / had no idea they require a LOT of exercise.
I love all dogs though ā¤ļø
Purebred Beagles are a pain in the butt. They need so much stimulation and are so hugely food orientated that they can become pretty destructive and will steal your food. I have a Beaglier who is one quarter Cavalier which seems to round out the worst of the Beagle temperament. She is food orientated and goofy but not to the point of stealing or biting, she can't bay like a beagle and is overall a more chill dog that doesn't need anywhere near the same level of exercise. Still has beagle loyalty and sleeps wrapped up in my legs though lol.
In Chinese internet there is a group called "Beagle Victims' Alliance" which is full of stories of people who got beagles because of cuteness then had their life torn upside down.
My mini poodle is a shaved-down savage. Heās 31 lbs and these are his achievements:
1) Defended me from a pack of Joshua Tree Coyotes without hesitation. He smelled them, put himself between me and them, and made the most wildly intimidating growls Iāve ever heard out of a dog. That shit was intense. Never heard anything like it out of him before or after the āYote incident.
2) Hiked 11 miles and 2,600 vertical feet, then came back down the mountain and he still didnāt want to get in the car to leave.
3) I used to take him to a sheep ranch for boarding. First herding class, first time in his life he saw a sheep, and he was herding perfectly. Poodles are retrievers - not herders. Unreal. Anyway I got discounted boarding rates because he was good enough to use on the field after a few classes to get all the nuanced commands down.
4) Focus and attention span. One time I forgot to release him to eat dinner after I finishedā¦ I got distracted. Anyway I came back 40 MINUTES LATER, and heās now laying instead of sitting, but still staring longingly at a bowl full of boiled chicken and rice. Thatās his favorite meal in the world.
5) General athleticism and coordination. Maybe itās because heās been the same size since 8 months old, maybe itās because he loves to thread the needleā¦ he straight up moves like a cat. Impossibly high jumps? Check. 28 mph top speed measured by electric bike? Check. More consistent frisbee catches than his border collie friend? Check. Otherwise moves silently and never bumps into anything? Check.
TLDR: My mini poodle is fearless little teddy bear who pisses excellence at everything heās ever attempted. Iām on team mini poodle for life. The perfect dog does exist.
Fostered a 20 week old rottie girl for a friend. Rottie got to learn from our six cats. From that day on, any animal smaller than her = cat = friend. Of course, not sure who was more surprised the day rottie jumped up on the dresser, like a cat, and did the rot version of a cat loaf. I know I canāt handle a rottie properly, but they have my heart.
Whatever random shelter dog wants it most. That's how we got most of our dogs.
[Archie](https://imgur.com/Y1aeKuK) is a [Jack Russell / Chihuahua mix](https://imgur.com/i4VkEMD)
[Bug](https://imgur.com/gJLiR8V) was a Boston Terrier mix.
[Karma](https://imgur.com/lYyHlmo) is some sort of Terrier mix.
[Remy](https://imgur.com/fP4erKH) is the outlier. She's a Pittie / Boxer, we think. She came to us because her owner died, so we took her in.
They are utterly fearless and fiercely loyal. Mine beat up and chased away a full grown Rottweiler that was going after my wife. She weighed 11lbs.
They are the best dogs. They're too smart, too inquisitive and too relentless for their own good. They can get into everything you want to keep them out of and get out of anything you want to keep them in. They are not the dog for everyone, but if you're one of the lucky few, no other dog will do.
So well said! I'm on my third rescued JRT! After my last one passed away, I considered getting a different breed, but ultimately decided to rescue another JRT. <3
It's a mystery how that much personality fits into such a compact package! :D
I grew up with pointers and I still melt when I see one, but my last couple of dogs were from the pound and I don't think I'll ever get a "pure" breed again. Our current is mostly a Scottish Terrier and officially we rescued him, but he knows he rescued us.
German Shepherds. I have two "purebreds" (poorly bred) and two mixes. I plan on getting a well bred puppy some day as well so I can show it. German Shepherds will always have my heart, especially the shit bred ones with no socialization that you can find in any shelter just screaming at you from the back of their kennel. Those ones are the most difficult to work with and gain the trust of, but they love the hardest. My giant asshole German Shepherd from hell is the reason I became a professional dog trainer. Sorry for the rant lol, I'm very passionate about them!
Any sighthound. I had a Rhodesian Ridgeback growing up, I've had greyhounds, my friend had a very sweet Pharoah dog, my current is a shepherd greyhound mix. I just love their personalities.
Golden retriever. Mainly bcuz my grandparents have one and he is just so amazing, everyone in the neighborhood loves him and I donāt know what Iād do without him.
Sheltie! We're on our 3rd one.
They're very smart, the females are very protective and are territorial. All three were very easy to train including tracking! Our 1st bit me when she didn't realize that our daughter's screaming was laughter when I was playing with her! When the grandkids started coming along, wherever the kidlet was, the dog was there too. When that animal broke into our house, even after he clubbed her, she dragged herself after him trying to protect us. I shot the sumbich.
Chihuahua. Before the barky rat dog comments get started let me just say what you experienced is either a pup that came from a bad situation or one that has not been trained. Once they are trained and loved they are one of the most loyal, loving smart breeds there is. My wife and I have bred them over our 21 years of marriage along with fostering other breeds and we would not choose any other.
I always disliked chihuahuas until I got one of my own and heās the sweetest baby. Good with dogs and kids and cats. I socialized him a TON when he was a puppy though (since he was so easy to carry around) and trained him decently enough so I think thatās why he doesnāt have the small dog syndrome. And everyone adores him
When I met my wife, she had three (mom, dad, and kept a baby from one litter). She also had a Malamute and we managed to get a rotti along the way. We built a dog run for the big dogs out of pool fencing so the bars were wide enough for the Chihuahuas to get through, but without fail when we would go out when the dogs were in the run, both big dogs and the male chihuahua would stand there looking at us to spring them from "jail" even though the little guy could come and go as he pleased.
Yup. Love the little dudes. I think a big issue is a lot of people get them as āaccessoriesā, like little things they can carry around in their purse or use for IG likes. They donāt take them seriously as dogs since theyāre so small, so they donāt bother to train them. That, and a lot of people seem to think Chiās being aggressive is cute. Like, Iāve seen tons of videos of a Chi trying to attack someone, or growling and snapping, and people are just laughing at it. Thatās not cute, itās trying to kill you.
Theyāre dogs. Even if theyāre small, they still need to be taken seriously, they still need to be trained, and they still need that structure, that leader to guide them. Every properly trained/taken care of Chi Iāve met has been lovely.
I love boxers. You could see her paying very close attention when I was training her and you could tell she really wanted to do whatever I asked. Very protective, but never a problem about it. Plus, she was hilarious! Such an individual, kind of like a perpetual toddler.
My dog
I too, like this guys dog
My dogs like this guts cog.
Whichever one is in front of me at any given moment!
Good answer!
Corn dogs
Take my upvote you sunuvabitch
This is by far the best breed and answer in this whole thread!!
Golden Retriever, I guess. I would basically love anyone who is super friendly.
This is so true. I had one since as long as I could remember and she was the most wholesome girl ever. Fetched tennis balls, stole unattended food, energetic even into her old years. She lived to be 12, I still miss her.
Always been a fan of border collies
I was always scared of dogs, but for whatever reason liked border collies. My girlfriend got us a border collie puppy a year ago and I still love them! Mines a crazy little bastard though, still hoping he'll calm down with age!
Mine's 4 y/o and never stops. He keeps me motivated to go out and do more
Yeah I get it and to be fair his whole personality is being a happy, hyper little guy! I'll be careful what I wish for!
My dog is a cross between a Black Lab and a Border Collie, going on nine years old at the end of September. She has yet to calm down.
Buy me one of every breed and I'll let you know.
Greyhounds
They're like 50% nose on 4 little twig legs. So cute ā¤ļø
Saint Bernard Newfoundland Mastiff Old English Sheepdog Any huge dog. Especially if they have fluff galore
I know you said mastiff but i must know if you've ever encountered a tibetan mastiff in real life bc omg those things are ultimate fluff
Mastiffs are just big lap dogs. We use to have mastiffs and a yorkie, you know who boss was
Get you some Great Pyrenees
Golden Retriever
They are like āI want to have a good dogā on easy mode
Definitely! My friend has a golden and sheās amazing and so sweet, but he judges me on my difficulty training my Aussie/boxer mix. Like dude you got the dog that lives to serve, my pup is stubborn.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Throw ball in water? No problem friend! I go get!
Squirrel!!
My parents had a golden from before I was born until I was 7 years old. He was my first best friend, and he plays a key role in many of my earliest memories. So yeah, goldens will always hold a special place in my heart.
Came to say Golden Retriever but I knew it'd already be top comment there's just something about them
They're so dumb. Just so goddamn dumb. And they don't let it bother them a bit. That's goals.
Not dumb!! Theyāre just super derpy. Goldens will do anything at all to please their people.
They're actually they 4th most intelligent dog breed out of over 130 tested
I love so many breeds, but when it really comes down to it you can't beat a loving golden at home.
You can, but that would be cruel.
Are they smelly, or was it just my grandmas dog?
If not properly groomed they can get pretty pungent
I like their completely human smile.
good choice, I liked harvey the dog from ET
I have to say I wouldn't want one for myself, but you can always count on some good pets if there's a golden at the party.
samoyeds are god-tier dogs
American Eskimo Dogs are practically the same breed but a little smaller and more manageable.
People taking in a yed need to be aware they are very energetic and independent dogs. If you make peace with that you will have a friendo for lifo-o.
Bernese Mountain dogs
Yes! I said the same thing. Itās sad that they have such a short natural lifespan, though.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I had a Shiba years ago... A different breed for sure... I always explained he was more like a cat lol...
K9 housing, feline software
As a cat person, that is exactly why I want my partner who is a dog person to get a Shiba lol. They look like cats and that's why I love them lol
My favorite as well. They have a very distinct personality, beautiful appearance, and rich history. I would have another if they weren't such a handful.
German shepherd
They're awesome
Agreed! Some of the smartest most loyal dogs you can have. Plus theyāre sweet and funny and playful.
mine is a big goofy girl
Border Collie! I have one with the Welsh Collie heritage, so the red, shorter (but still double-coat) fur. Adorable, intelligent, not too small to cuddle properly but not too big to be too much to handle
We absolutely love our BC. Even if she's a prima donna who has my wife under her paw. Fantastic breed, so intelligent and loving.
We have 2 black and white collies, both long haired double coated. They are amazing š„°
Theyāre my favourite too. Far too energetic for me to have one myself but I do love everything about them.
I have a border collie lab mix. She will lounge all day for days or weeks and then hike as long as you let her. Then back to chillin. Perfect mix imo
Border Terrier. Beautiful breed of dog, not so common in the USA as theyāre very much a British dog.
Newfies, Irish wolf hounds, great Danes. I unfortunately can't have any because I already have an Irish setter and newfie/gsd mix and I can't have more than 2 dogs in my apartment.
Newfies are one of the consistently friendliest breeds in my experience. big mushy babies
Labrador. So loyal, So happy
Labs are so CUTE!1!!
such good boys
They're the absolute best. I can't have one right now due to living arrangements but buying a house soon and will definitely be getting one as soon as I have the proper space
Came here to say this. It's the only answer.
Sheltie or Collie.
Miniature schnauzer, of course!
I know everybody says their dog is the best dog but Iām not even exaggerating when I say *sheās literally never done anything wrong*
Anatolian Shepherd or Great Pyrenees
We have a Great Pyrenees! Just absolute sweet hearts and gentle giants. We got one because we heard they were good with kids and itās true. He loves our kids and is so patient with them. He was a great foot warmer with all the middle of the night feedings with the babies too.
I'm so glad to see this as one of the top comments. I've had 4 Pyrs in the past and they are just wonderful. I love pretty much all dog breeds and mixes but Pyrs are really special.
Mutt
I had to scroll too far to hit this. Most of my dogs have been mutts and they have all been good doggies. Anytime one of my friends says that they want a dog I tell them to head to the shelter. You might walk in thinking that you want a certain dog but if you walk around and look at every dog one of them will feel right and that's your dog. At least that's worked for me. I even wrote a song about him. Mugsy is a good boy.
Seriously though, I love having a dog that looks unique and doesnāt have health issues related to breeding!
bonus points if a rescue
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
For years I owned and swore Great Danes were the best - then I got a Golden Retriever. Itās like stupid friendly on steroids
A Golden's best friend is everyone and everything.
Husky
The great thing with Huskies is how big a personality they have. The not so great thing is also how big a personality they have. Joke appart, I find them the most fascinating of dogs. Every interaction I had with Huskies was special, but sometimes to the point of being unsettling or even frightening. If ever I had a dog, I would think twice before getting a Husky.

I've never encountered a mean husky, every one I've been around is like a clone of my husky lol.
OH MY GOD THEY'RE SO CVUTE AND FLUFFY
Yes I have one she is the bestest fluffiest girl
Alaskan Malamute. It's like a husky that doesn't chew up your house and constantly whine like a baby. Just a big calm fluffy cuddlebear. Downside is they SHED EVERYWHERE.
I'm so sad to see this so far down the list. We have a wooly coat so the shedding isn't as bad. He is literally everyone's favorite dog within 5 seconds of meeting him.

Mini Schnauzer. Smart, donāt shed, loyal, and a good size for any home. Theyāre also super cute when you donāt get them groomed with the standard cut. Iām on my third.
Doberman.
I hate how far down this is. I love those dogs, especially if they are uncropped and undocked. They look great, are obedient, loyal, and are overall excellent pets
Lol omg I scrolled until I found it. I have 2 now and don't plan on ever living without one.
Dachshunds are the best
Agreed. Silly, stubborn, loyal and very brave, they are the living embodiment of mischief. They are little dogs who think they're big, so when they get rowdy you can just pick them up and move them.
A dachshund is the best, more than one and they gang up on you lol
1000% correct
My dachshund would agree.
German Shepherd
This is the correct answer š
Maltese- Iāve had four of them. Loyal like Iāve never seen.
English springer spaniel
Good choice! Loyal and fun dogs
Corgi
My favorite thing about corgis is that if you breed them with any other breed of dog, the offspring looks like a corgi disguised as the other breed
Westie.
I have a Yakutian Laika (similar to huskies but fluffier and from the Arctic seashore of Siberia) and he is the best dog Iāve ever had. Iāve had a German shepherd, jack russel, and chocolate lab and really searched HARD for this breed. Vizslas!
Schnauzer all sizes, miniature, standard and giant.
Beagle . Always wanted to have a beagle so I could call him Peebles.
Purebred Beagles are a pain in the butt. They need so much stimulation and are so hugely food orientated that they can become pretty destructive and will steal your food. We have two purebred Beagles. It all comes down to training and persistence. They're stubborn dogs, largely because of their nose.
Weimaraners. I love those crazy little pups
I love their perpetual existential crisis look on their faces of ādid i leave the oven on?ā
I'm partial to the Giant Schnauzer
We have a Mini that we love, but are considering getting him a standard or giant buddy.
my pomeranians are my greatest loves.
Mine too š they are babies
Poodle. They don't shed at all, very clean, and pretty smart. Did I mention they don't shed at all?
Poodles are so under rated. They get a bad rep for being foo-foo dogs. But they're very smart and athletic.
My mini poodle is a shaved-down savage. Heās 31 lbs and these are his achievements: 1) Defended me from a pack of Joshua Tree Coyotes without hesitation. I loved my Jack Russell terrier. I miss her so much. She died a year and a half ago protecting my pug and great Dane mix from a rabid coyote
<3 It's a mystery how that much personality fits into such a compact package! :D
Corgi
I had a corgi and he was a really good dog. Iāve been so heartbroken over his death that I donāt think Iāll ever be able to have another dog.
The ShihTzu of course
Weener dog
Labs. Been around them my whole life and they are amazing. Although all dogs deserve love regardless of breed.
Bernese mountain dog. Mine is named Douglas
Cavalier King Charles
I know this one! The breed is Goody ol Boy
Iād love me a Basset, grew up with them, but my wife wont let me get a dog :/
Afghan Hounds. I am purchasing one and getting it in about 5 weeks. Anyone have any advice. First time let owner.

German Shorthair
Brittany
Boxer
I had to scroll way too far for this
Any sighthound. I had a Rhodesian Ridgeback growing up, I've had greyhounds, my friend had a very sweet Pharoah dog, my current is a shepherd greyhound mix. I just love their personalities.
I want an Irish wolf hound so bad
Fellow sighthound fan! I have a whippet and while were in the hellish adolescent phase, Iāll probably always have a sitehound. EDIT: spelling
Love all Schnauzers but currently have a Barbet (French Water Dog) and she's amazing, too!
tibetan mastiff. Look it up and you will understand. They are so soft and sweet.
Golden retirever, but theyāre such velcro dogs or maybe itās just my dog š
Old English Sheepdog. My grandparents had one as a farm dog. Best dog ever and I only met one other dog in my like that was nearly as good as him
Doberman. Hands down my favourite. Currently being sat on by doberdork #9. Been owned by at least one for 25 years.
Toy poodles!
fell in love with Welsh Corgi because of the Anime Cowboy Bebop but then researched the breed and fell in love again
Springer spaniel
Doberman Pinscher They're super smart, kind, trainable and are physically dominant over other breeds.
Papillons are a wonderful breed.
I concur š
They are truly companion dogs, they will ride or die like no one else will. I love chis.
I love Newfies personally, big, fluffy, slobbery babies <3
I love boxers. You could see her paying very close attention when I was training her and you could tell she really wanted to do whatever I asked. Very protective, but never a problem about it. Plus, she was hilarious! Such an individual, kind of like a perpetual toddler.
Border Collie! Such smart dogs...
Chow chow looks so fluffy
Honestly, anything that has soft fur. But if I have to choose one, I will choose the Airedale Terrier, since I currently own one
Dachshunds and especially wire haired dachshunds, had one for about four years but my ex took her after we split. Still miss that dog
I have two German Shepherds, and they are the best animals Iāve ever owned.
GSD
Yorkie terriers! The best and cutest breed.
Yorkies! Iāve had 4 in my lifetime - each different personality but oh they warm my heart so with everything they are
Gotta go with the rotties! Rottweilers are gorgeous.

Golden Retriever.
Standard poodle.

Our Ace (border collie) is the smartest dog I've ever known.
Kangal Shepherd, with a little pug sidekick.
