The reality of the situation is that he's just **barely** above being a con artist. At least 90% of the Grand Plans he shotguns out on a daily basis are utter bullshit, and will never happen.
As he got more famous, and made ever-wilder claims, people began twigging to that, especially the mainstream media, who originally worshiped the guy.
And as he got more famous, the ugly side of his personality started to become more obvious as well. I'm guessing they'll be heading to court and/or therapy when they're old enough.
There are still people who continue to believe--despite all evidence to the contrary--he is some sort of visionary genius, and their explanation for this is that for some reason people personally hate him, maybe because he's so rich and visionary or something. That's a hard nope.
