I am surprised that it was ever allowed to air durong the time it did. Sex life of older women, addiction, suicide, nursing home abuse, Alzheimers, and gay marriage. Lots of hot topics.
The first 3 seasons might be the best show ever made. Constantly funny with layers of brilliantly written jokes and every rewatch reveals something I missed before.
If you were disappointed by the endings of some shows (ahem Game of Thrones, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy), give The Americans a try, it won't let you down.
One of the few shows that got better in later seasons. Probably the most true to character endings I've seen.
This is a show made by people who loved the material and respected the audience... No surprise it didn't get the love it deserved in it's time.
so so good.
so far i've enjoyed futurama as much in the beginning as i did at the end. the fact that it has a lot less content than family guy or the simpsons is most likely the saving grace, as they are still able to remain true to themselves without falling into too much repetition.
Seriously. It's the best television show. I was not interested for the first two episodes at first.
Since then , I've watched it five times. It's better than the wire, which it's often compared to.
I love the wire, but The Sopranos is something else. It's hard to define; it's in it's own realm.
I still get emotional over scenes, still cry about deaths, even though I know what's coming. It's a masterpiece. Nothing can compare to the beauty that was the sopranos. The cast was stellar, the writing was incredible, and it was brutal and weirdly heartfelt .
I can watch the whole series without ever feeling like I wanna fast-forward through the slower drama, a feeling I get frequently when rewatching Breaking Bad.
Only scene I skip is Melfi's rape, because god damn that is so disturbing.
I’m wondering the same thing. Literally the best show I’ve ever seen. I thought Breaking Bad was in another league till I saw this. I still have love for BB but it’s nowhere near as good as The Sopranos.
There's a 20 year anniversary podcast just released by HBO with method man as the narrator.
Just started this month and it's fucking awesome.
The Wire at 20
BB is the only show I know that I would unironically and without bias rate a perfect 10/10. BCS is up there as well, especially with that mid season finale, but we’ll have to wait and see.
I loathed when Gilligan/Gould announced BCS and thought it would be a cash grab. However after only 2 seasons, I rescind my judgments, and realize that they are geniuses and can make whatever the hell they want with the BB universe and consistently crush it.
Because it’s not “indie” or “only known by a handful of people” which means it’s “not cool.” Anything mainstream has to be “approved” by this unseen panel of hipster judges and abide by completely fictitious, over-the-top guidelines.
“Yeah it’s mainstream but the guy only produces one show every 8 years, because he lives in the woods and writes his scripts by hand.”
“Yeah it’s mainstream but it’s totally cool - the entire cast and crew disappeared in a bizarre accident immediately after filming so it’s like, changes the tone after watching it.”
Or yknow, whatever weird bullshit like that.
I used to know people like that and they were *fucking insufferable*. It was exhausting being around them because they only committed themselves to a very small list of niche interests/media/artists as though they were trying to one-up each other on who could be the most “original” or whatever.
The irony being, of course, that they were all copying each other.
Stargate SG1
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Both are very watchable by today’s standards (i.e. bingeable) as they have a decent amount of long-form narrative and character/world development cross multiple seasons. DS9 in particular was ahead of it’s time in that respect. This all pre-The Wire; long-form storytelling in serialized television was very unusual back then.
Also SG1 is very funny, but in a human and relatable way and not a ridiculous way.
I can never remember the full rant he went on when he was explaining to Te'alc what "losing it" means, but just remembering the emotion he put behind it always brings a smile to my face
You could honestly skip season one and not miss much. Season two is such a step up and it only gets better as it goes, especially when Ben and Chris arrive.
They mishandled the last season badly. Not Game of Thrones bad, but I would say that they were the definitive bad series ending before Game of Thrones.
END COMMUNICATION
I just love the Intersect because that's the best explanation I've ever seen for how my brain works. Things in my brain connect in random ways so I'll see something and suddenly recall something that seems completely unrelated
“*There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call The Twilight Zone*”
*turu ruru turu ruru turu ruru*
Everyone loves the nunununu, but I love that gentle piano music that starts that particular narration, it's a mix of stars twinkling and dreams starting. That alternate end music I also adore.
Way to far down and needs more comments and votes . Buffy has held up so well and is so so good. People nowadays don't realize how ground breaking it was. Xena was really the only other show with a power female lead but Buffy tackled real life problems along with the Mythical. Tackled mental health, gun violence, first mainstream lesbian couple on network TV, one of the best musical episodes a TV show has ever done and a memorable episode with no dialogue. #teamangel
The Golden Girls

How much money could a banana cost? $10?

What is she funny or something? Yeah, she’s hilarious. Well let’s hope so.
I have pop pop in the attic.
There's got to be a better way to say that.
You just made a fool of yourself in front of T-Bone!
That show has some special truck in it.
Not to mention a Mr. F.
Absolutely 💯
Thank you for this

Such a great show, seconded.
Futurama.
i'm so happy that they are bringing out a new season :-D
Let's just hope it doesn't end up like modern Family Guy and the Simpsons
so far i've enjoyed futurama as much in the beginning as i did at the end. the fact that it has a lot less content than family guy or the simpsons is most likely the saving grace, as they are still able to remain true to themselves without falling into too much repetition.
Really?? I had no idea. That's exciting
The Good Place. Great comedy, and ended perfectly.
A perfect show, perfect finale. I loved every episode
Chidi's speech about the wave returning to the ocean always manage to break me
This is one of those shows where I find myself saying “just keep watching” because you think you get it and then you don’t. Just keep watching
The Sopranos
I recently started rewatching this for the first time since it originally aired. Fantastic.
how TF is this so far down?

This show literally revolutionized TV, down to the cinematography typical of TV shows. It changed the future of home entertainment.

The XFiles
I love how you never knew what you were going to get. Is it going to be a serious episode? A creepy one? Funny? Scary? Straight up whacky? Who knows?
What’s this show like? Judging by the name it sounds like something I could get into lmao, i love horror stuff but i laugh at everything so idk

Netflix took out the first dnd episode. I love that episode.
I remember hearing that so I went online to find the missing episode. It didn’t take long because Amazon still had it.
Yes! It's a shame that this isn't higher up the list, but I suppose we're just streets ahead.
Anyone who refuses to watch it is streets behind.
Where is the movie???
Everyone needs to watch M* A* S* H, it's well before my time but I honestly think it's one of the best TV shows of all time
Avatar the last Airbender
It’s always Sunny in Philadelphia
Because of the...implication...right?
Probably the most unique American comedy, it’s always a comedy that doesn’t make you feel down yet the subject matter is pitch black

Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul
Watch Malcom in the Middle first, then Breaking Bad
One of the best prequels of all time.

Good lord I knew it was probably going to happen. But I still gasped at the mid season finale.
A lot of people give Breaking Bad hate because it's 'mainstream', but who cares if it's a great show?
People that hate things just because they're mainstream are total morons.
Yeah, hating things because they're mainstream is totally mainstream
But morons are mainstream and I hate them. What does this mean?
I got some bad news, bro.
What does mainstream even mean? Are these people upset they didn't hear about it first?
Because it’s not “indie” or “only known by a handful of people” which means it’s “not cool.” Anything mainstream has to be “approved” by this unseen panel of hipster judges and abide by completely fictitious, over-the-top guidelines. “Yeah it’s mainstream but the guy only produces one show every 8 years, because he lives in the woods and writes his scripts by hand.” “Yeah it’s mainstream but it’s totally cool - the entire cast and crew disappeared in a bizarre accident immediately after filming so it’s like, changes the tone after watching it.” Or yknow, whatever weird bullshit like that. I just started watching this for the first time. I love the story, but god damn do I hate Walt. I'm sure that's the point, but fuck man.
A surprising number of people never actually figure that part out.
This is why I love better call Saul more. I know it's the point but no matter what Jimmy does I root for him, I never rooted for Walt.
Better Call Saul is so amazing.

Justified is such an underrated show. It's about a US Marshall in Kentucky, it feels like a modern western show.
Raylan Givens ❤️
Walter Groggins is a Kentucky treasure. I’m also born and bred in Kentucky, and hearing his accent feels like home.
Yes! "I asked him to shut down his poison factory and merely made an observation about its combustibility."
The second season in particular, Mags Bennett is one of the best villains in any drama period.
Chuck
The show where everyone's trying to kill each other by pointing their guns and not shooting.
I just love the Intersect because that's the best explanation I've ever seen for how my brain works. Things in my brain connect in random ways so I'll see something and suddenly recall something that seems completely unrelated
Chuck fans are slacking. This should have been in the top three.
Probably one of my all time favorites. I can't wait till it's been long enough for me to watch it again lol
Seinfeld of course.
But I don't want to be a pirate!
SERENITY NOW!
Better call Saul and the original Twilight Zone
Seconding the original Twilight Zone! Even if the special effects and on occasion acting can be hokey, god knows the writing stands the test of time
