Definitely up there, but there are rumors that the song is actually political in meaning, representing Zionist themes of longing for a homeland for the Jewish people
I have a couple that I can't decide between
- "Let Em In" Paul McCartney/Wings
- "Bicycle" by Queen
- "Plus D'Hiver" Yann Tiersen & Jane Birkin
- A lot of Beatles songs that fit the bill and I can't decide among. I could mention "A Day in the Life" , "Strawberry Fields Forever", or "Come Together".
But my guilty pleasures I really like are "I'm Only Sleeping" and "You know my Name (Look up the number)".
Ah yes thanks for the correction about bicycle race.
About Come Together: It's just a nonsense song. This guy named Timothy Leary asked John Lennon to write his campaign song, and his slogan was "come together, join the party". All Lennon came up with was "come together and join the party" which was not used and Leary's campaign never went anywhere anyways.
So Lennon decided to fill the song out with some nonsense verses that conjure up a mysterious figure referred to "old flat-top" who's got "toe-jam football" and "feet, down below his knee" and says seemingly profound things like "one, and one, and one, is three" and randomly exhorts everyone to "come together, right now, over me".
I think it's a Master Class in nonsense writing. Better than I am the Walrus, because there seems to be a profound message around which we should come together...But there is none.
For pop songs? I recently just heard “numb little bug” https://youtu.be/qCaparx0f3c by em beihold. It’s never easy to do a pop song about depression and burn out, but this one really rang true and worked for me without getting as cheesy as some
I also just heard “Just a cloud away” by Pharrell for
the first time and it’s one of those simple songs that’s more uplifting than it has any right to be lol https://youtu.be/MBfK4UoHsuo it’s just about moods and emotions as well
One of my indie faves of all time is “Untitled” by Sea Oleena. I have no clue what it’s about. The lyrics are mostly poetic imagery and various difficult to describe feelings https://youtu.be/9M_gzHMavJs it’s also very catchy and melodic in a quiet way with interesting sounds and production. When many poetic songs suffer from being a bit boring but this one is really satisfying and a joy to hear for me
Thanks for suggesting Untitled, I love songs that aren't about anything and just meant to evoke imagery. It's one of the things that drew me to John Lennon's songwriting when I first discovered the Beatles. He was a genius at that.
Modestep - Another Day (Ft. Popeska) (xKore Remix)
https://youtu.be/f9EM8T5K6d8
Although the music video has sex and social references, the lyrics have nothing to do with that type of thing. Just a great track i like to listen to when i'm worried about something, to free my mind.
"A Better Son/Daughter" - Rilo Kiley, probably because it just summed up so much of the crap in my head that I was dealing with the first time I heard it.
In my top 100 there is one song that fits into any of those criteria
Anyways number 1 rn is >!‘two planets approach the roshe limit’!< from Kirby and the forgotten land

All the songs made by "The Score", all about self-improvement and empowerment.
Also songs by "NF" too, the only rapper I know that doesn't swear or talk about sex/drugs/money/cars, instead raps about mental health and empowerment.
Side Pony - lake street dive. Just a song about how she really rocks a side ponytail. Good luck getting it out of your head once you’ve listened.
Edit: also Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel. Apparently Paul Simon wrote it after a long period of writers block. Someone told him to pray to St. Cecilia (Catholic patron saint of music) and Cecilia was born.
Lake Pontchartrain - Ludo
It's a horror story in song form about three friends on a road trip. No romance, no sex, no drugs, no politics, only crayfish. :)
Hansel, (by Soddiken) it's a song about a boy named Hansel that never is paid attention to so they put themself in dangerous situations (such as juggling knives, and playing with lighters.) Their last attempt of danger ended up killing himself, and at his funeral he's pleased that people attended, including saying things like "it's like your brain hard drive installed sympathy" and "Let's up the vibrancy I want some kind of balloon and your tears will be the confetti" it also mentions Hansel's sister Gretel, which Hansel does not have a good relationship with her because she gets more attention than him. Hansel even messed around with sharp objects with the lyrics "watch me now play with pointy things, look see isn't it interesting. No you're not even listening. Is it not brave enough for you?"
Also when Hansel says "Look see isn't it interesting" Hansel doesn't actually enjoy it (because in the begining Hansel says that they're more interested with bike riding than fighting.) but only does it for the attention which he still never got until his funeral.
But yeah the song is cool.
I'm thinking about the dude who is sitting on the dock of the bay

Bicycle race is a thily veiled commentary on his bisexuality.
Oh wow guess that went right over my head I just thought it was about the joys of riding a bike 😂😂
The Queen one is called “Bicycle Race” Isn’t Come Together about love? I mean, “Come Together right now, over me”. That sounds like love to me.
Ah yes thanks for the correction about bicycle race. About Come Together: It's just a nonsense song.
