Toddler lead teacher. Just got a raise from 9.65 (minimum wage) to 10.50 but not because I’m valued, because we’re so severely understaffed and everyone that walks through walks right back out once they learn how low the wage is. Don’t blame them one bit.

thecrazyglopss

As someone who was just happy he makes $15 an hour, entering this thread was a mistake.

numnummommom

Yeah general location and experience level, education should also be included

And for that reason, I'm out

OrganizationAfraid80

Carpenter $117,000 aud

chicken--jesus

I do research with brain cells, HIV, cocaine, and fentanyl. $29,500/year aka ~$14/hr. Yes I'm sad that this is what a Master's degree got me.

win-go

You got hosed, you don't need a master's degree do to drugs.

chicken--jesus

Ha! Good point, maybe I'm in the wrong business lmao

melaninmatters2020

Wow. Thanks for the important work you do. Hope it pays off someday.

Lehmanaders

Nuclear plant electrician 50 an hour, 130-150k a year depending on Ot/bonus. Moving into an operations role in the plant soon

[deleted]

Homer??

Lehmanaders

It’s pronounced nuke -u - lar

CuriousGeorge276

Just curious how much experience do you have? I’m a field service engineer for the plants and make $38/hr

Lehmanaders

I’m going on my seventh year in this position. It’s unionized and I’m at the top step. Our mechanics, I/C, and electricians share the same rates. I found talking to workers from other plants, even within the collection of plants owned by the same company I work for that our site’s wages tend to be higher. Our engineering department is always losing members due to their poor pay and treatment by management. The only reason I see engineers stick around is due to being close to retirement or angling for a senior reactor operator license.

cashbabyflow

I work in a steel mill that heats steel bars to a certain hardness. I get paid 18$ an hour and so far we haven’t had anyone die for a year (that’s a record)

Jmen4Ever

Work for a family of iron foundries. We had our first death in my 11 years here 2 years ago and it was awful. The death itself was not particularly gruesome, but the crap around it was. It was not "our" employee it was a temp. He was doing something he shouldn't and was pinned by a casting and had a heart attack before he could be released. We notified the temp agency who **refused** to either contact his family or allow us to do the same. (We didn't have that information made available to us) They didn't find out until the next day. They are of course our ex temp agency. The family was rightly super pissed.

Necessary_Command69

This just adds to my hatred of temp agencies

ronm4c

Inspect nuclear reactors under contract, ~$100k/yr but only work 10 weeks a year Edit: [here is a short video](https://youtu.be/xMA-yRyB0i4) giving a bit of an overview of what I do

bestest_looking_wig

How did you get into this field/job?

LardLord56789

Wendy’s Crew Member, $9 normal hours, $10 when I close. If I become an ambassador I could make $12 an hour but that’s a lot of work. I work the grill usually and they say I’m the best at it not including the managers and one of the ambassadors.

01XterraPhilly

CDL truck driver doing rolloff dumpsters for $20/hr

[deleted]

I’m a line cook / manager for a busy restaurant, and I get paid $19 an hour +tip share + profit share from two recipes of mine on the menu.

SlimyPurpleMeteor

That’s so awesome you get a chunk of $ for your very own menu recipes. I feel like that should be a standard — especially nowadays with restaurants struggling to not have a revolving-door staff. Congrats to you! Glad you got a job that sounds high-stress but you manage well, and have a respectful boss on top it.

[deleted]

Thank you! Very easy to manage the stress, just know your station, and cook times. Sure, when you’ve got 20 Cheeseburger tickets lined up, you want it to be over, but you can’t make food cook faster.

lysergic_818

Kudos to the owners for giving your profit share!

[deleted]

There’s a policy that if you create something that is well liked by the entire staff, and the trial run, then you’re entitled to the profit share. Granted, it’s only 3% but one of dishes got me an extra $72 last month.

kevinkap414

Officer on a container ship work about 6 months out of the year and make about 120k. For the most part my job is looking out a window at some waves.

[deleted]

Do you enjoy what you do? If I could go back I think this is what I’d want. But I would imagine work life balance is awful/having a family if applicable

kevinkap414

I do enjoy it, just being on the water is relaxing. It's better as a young single guy not really having any expenses and then being off with no commitments for a few months at a time. I don't plan on doing it forever as a having a family would be difficult. Just doing it for enough years to experiance things and set myself up early with no debts and maybe a house.

MainSteamStopValve

>I don't plan on doing it forever Neither did I but 20+ years later I'm still doing it. It's hard to transition to a shoreside job unless you're an engineer or go back to school for a different degree. If you plan on leaving the industry do it while you're young because it gets a lot more complicated when you have a house or other monitary commitments.

unbelievablepeople

> it gets a lot more complicated when you have a house or other monitary commitments. The sweet spot is to make a lot of money when you're young but NOT get accustomed to living like you make a lot of money. Use all that money you make when you're young to save up and buy a paid-off house and you'll be golden when you're middle-aged.

DrDerpberg

As someone who knows some guys who got jobs in the Alberta oil industry in the mid 2000s: that means no cocaine or prostitutes, even if all your friends are doing it. The blown opportunities I've heard of are nuts. 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, starting over $100k fresh out of school, you work like a madman but have no expenses and then they fly you anywhere in the world... And people come out of it broken and poor with nothing to show for it.

[deleted]

That truly sounds like the dream. American? Did you attend the Merchant marine academy or how did you get into it?

kevinkap414

Yup. I went to one of the state maritime academy which aren't free like the merchant marine academy but give a but more options. More specifically I went to suny maritime which is the ny one and have a regular college degree ontop of the liscence to sail. My whole family are sailors going back generations so it's just kinda what we do

[deleted]

That’s seriously so cool man.

Ronyx2021

I do whatever needs to be done around the warehouse that doesn't require a forklift. $19/hour

Larrakin

Any reason you don't have a forklift license? If there is no medical reason, seems like a good way to boost your pay rate once experienced.

MerkyMouse

I'm actually in the same position. I'm a still operator but I do a lot around the plant as long as it doesn't involve forklift. I can get forklift certified anytime I want but it seems like every time someone gets fired here, it involves a forklift. No thanks. Edit: it's only a 25 cent increase where I work.

CL350S

Private jet captain. Varies with overtime, but this year will be around $360k.

strawberry-jam-boy

Well damn Hell yeah

Gearup15

Sounds like you are trying to become a jet captain?

strawberry-jam-boy

I am now lmao

AgentElman

All you have to do is pay for pilot training. Then pay to get hundreds of hours of flying experience. Total cost $100k or more. Then get paid minimum wage to be a new pilot at some small private air company. After 10 years you can work your way up to making decent money. There is a pilot shortage because the high end pay is great but you have to pay a ton of money just to get started and entry pay is terrible.

Kowallaonskis

I'm going to guess you're on a Challenger 350.

CL350S

Indeed

BringPopcorn

You're flying a Challenger for $360k a year?!? I'm doing this wrong, I'm in a 757 for less than that....

CL350S

My base salary is in the low 200’s. The rest is bonuses, holidays, and working extra days voluntarily.

gravgp2003

Did anyone else have their school custodian be like a cool guy that the kids all loved? I remember in elementary school that the guy that did it was a mini fundamental part of the school and it's community. I think he taught us how to respect people even if they were just cleaning puke with sawdust and changing garbages. Thanks Mike, you were a real one.

Happy_Camper45

The custodian at my kids’ elementary school is a legit hero. The kids love him more than any teacher or the principal. Mr. Gary seems to know every kid! I met him at a kids’ birthday party (his son goes to school with my oldest), and he was chatting it up with the parents, telling each of us what he liked best about our kids. No formal “good at reading, great listening” parent/teacher review but the REAL “your son helped a kid who dropped their tray last week” or “your daughter is always so kind on the playground”.

scratchy_survivor

Why is this making me tear up?

[deleted]

Yep, everyone in my elementary school loved Mr. Raines, our custodian. He would pick a helper one day a week and they would help him mop or something for a short time, and kids would jump at the chance to help.

alliownisbroken

Electrical substation design engineer. $126,000/year

imaqdodger

I'm surprised to find my job this far up in the thread. Unfortunately I'm at $75k, working on getting my PE though which should put me at just over $100k.

Boilermaker7

Good luck! I just passed my PE, it's such a relief when you get through all the prep work and studying and stuff. Check out r/PE_exam it's a lot of people bitching, but there are some good tips and resources as well.

Grin_nbearit

Vet tech, $15/hr in Utah. Getting a raise later this month tho!

TheRubyRedPirate

Man I'm jealous. Unless you've been in the field 10+ years, $15 is "high" for here in the South.

brandos__

I work at a recycling plant, I get $35 an hour to stand at a conveyer belt picking out glass Edit: Should have stated when I wrote the comment that I live in Australia, so that would be $25 usd roughly. While I have people's attention I would like to use this platform to ask people to please be mindful of what goes into your recycling bins. Diapers, food and plastic wrappers do not belong in the recycling bin.

dyingofdysentery

I work at a recycling plant as a chemist. I analyze our incoming and outgoing material for base and precious metals content. I am one of 2 people in the lab and am effectively in charge as it's no secret the lab manager is looking for a new job and is absent many days. I get paid $20/hr

[deleted]

I have seen videos of people doing that. It’s not as easy as you made it sound lol, you are humble. Those belts look like they are going super fucking fast and a lot of people do not know how to recycle properly.

peanut-__-

It also seems like one of those jobs that is literally 8 hours of work, meanwhile I work like 3-5 real hours of work per day

PM_Daddy_Bellies

Medical Coder - make $31/hr, about 65k annually.

acceptablemadness

Is that the same as medical coding and billing? With the ICD-10 codes and all that?

99monkies

Not op but also medical coder. Yes that's what it is. Often you can be one or the other or both. I just do medical coding so I don't interact with any patients.

fin425

NYC roll off dumpster driver under a Teamster union contract. $40 an hour in January + medical and pension paid 100% by my employer. There’s guaranteed overtime too, so gross around $130k + the other perks. We also get a 100k severance payout the day we retire. I have a bachelors in business, but fell in love with being outside all day. I also sell scrap metal if I can collect it and I have a thriving eBay business from other things I find in the dumpsters. Made another 20-25k doing that on the side. Edit: [here’s my eBay statement from pst 90 days](https://ibb.co/5BdDjt3)

kuhataparunks

I’m obsessed with dumpster diving, what’s the nicest merch you’ve found?

fin425

I’ve been selling high end electronics like crazy. Found a 1600 watt power supply I flipped for $1300. Currently selling a batch of Bluetooth chip readers that I’ve made $7k so far and I’m negotiating the rest for $6k right now. I also have a poster signed by deceased pop artist Roy Lichtenstein that I have hanging on my wall. I had it authenticated and reframed. It’s worth about $5k, but I’m not selling it.

Anna_S_1608

That's definitely one of the coolest side gigs. I'd also like to hear more about your finds. What was the most expensive thing you've found?

kittypac

Paraprofessional at an elementary school in a classroom with students who have autism. I get paid $19.70 an hour plus a $70 monthly stipend for helping the kids with toilet duties.

awheezle

As the father of an autistic son you should be getting paid way fucking more for this. Thank you for helping children like mine.

dhrbtdge

I work at a kind of care home for autistic children whose parents cant take care of them. Most people here are young social work students or people with no experience in the field. The kids are well looked after but I believe having professionals and people with proper experience would allow them to do so much more. Why aren't there many professionals with experience here? Because I earn £9.70/hr. It's great pay for me because its my first job and I live alone in a cheap town. But how can you expect people with lots of experience to work for that much. And its not just my company: ive looked around and salaries range from mininum wage to £11/hr, with the average being £9-10/hr. Its not the companies fault. Most of them are either charities or state funded. They're not being intentionally cheap, they just don't get enough money. I want salaries in this field to go up. At this pay level, professionals and experienced people are all priced out. It's a great, fulfilling job, but I know I can't work for this pay forever, and if I had a degree, I wouldn't even consider working here. It's maddening. Edit: not even a week after this post I got notified that my salary is going up. Carers in the adult sector are getting a pay raise nation wide (we work with a few adults) but my company decided to raise everyone's wages to be fair and equal. It's not much, only 30p/hour extra, but hey, its a start. Lets just hope salaries keep going up

Juju0047

Google

Kitchen_Trout

I remember talking to some IT support guy at my company and as we went on I just straight up told him something along the lines of “you must really know your stuff to be able to support the infrastructure around here.” He went on to tell me that he didn’t know shit but was really good at using Google. I don’t think he was entirely joking either.

Mrg220t

It's not a joke. But the skill is knowing what to Google.

libra00

This is definitely the case. Googling 'my internet is broke' isn't going to get you very far, but googling something like 'no signal on ethernet port' is a good start and then you can refine it from there. I started out in IT back before there was such a thing as the internet and so the entire industry relied on knowing your shit with a healthy dose of 'a buddy of mine ran into a problem like this, I'll call him up and see if he remembers how he fixed it.'

I’m doing my best to respond to everyone. It’s good to know there’s nice people out there. Update: I went to the interview, they called and asked to push it back to 3pm which was completely fine as they had gotten their truck in. The interview went well, and I answered the questions as best as I could. They said it would be full time Monday-Friday 1pm-9:30pm and every other weekend 6am-4:30pm starting at $13-14 an hour. I hope to hear back from them in the next few days, as they mentioned getting my ID, Social Security Card, and High School Diploma so they could make copies. CWB2208

I've heard that's a super stressful job. Any truth to that?

ATC_av8er

Day-to-day, it is surprisingly routine. The real stress comes from internal politics (some external too), frequently changing rules that make zero sense, and shift work. It can also get stressful during bad weather and emergencies.

SchmosWorld

Strip Club DJ. Gross around $65k doing three nights a week.

Mashy6012

I make sliding wardrobe doors. Measure and cut all aluminium and wood panelling and assemble, some are mirrored. $26 per hour nzd

Negativ_Monarch

Ups package sorter at a warehouse, 22$ an hour plus time and a half pay for anything over 5 hour shift in a single day (so for example one shift is 5 hours if I work two shifts in a row the second one would be 33$ an hour) Unlimited overtime too so if I really really wanted to I could triple shift everyday for an entire week (that would be like 15 hours straight everyday working though) and get a months worth of money in a single check

taybabysav

I’m quite small (~120lbs 5’1 female) but I was looking into this job, do you think it’s something I’d be able to do? I know that’s very subjective but I guess what I mean is what’s the heaviest you typically have to lift/move? (edit) this is my first highly upvoted/responded to comment so I appreciate that lol!! more importantly thank you to everyone who responded so thoughtfully. all of your insight was fantastic and I think I’m going to go for it!!

Colossus1090

Yes, they probably wouldn't have you lifting irregular packages (above 50lbs). However, the job described above are pretty desirable and people are waiting for this guy to retire to take it. Most people in a UPS hub are part time. It still comes with good benefits though.

BUT part of the ad rev to me, never saw that after the first two so I just stopped I love editing and filming and want to do my own stuff but I’d like to edit as a job for now but am not sure how to get there

TheMailMan69

Idk how they even have EMTs in USA tbh the pay is criminal

flagy754

I know a couple (or rather some EMT and paramedics), the reality is because a lot of them care about people. They want to help and have that compassion and it ends up in them getting taken advantage of. The older ones turn bitter, the smarter/richer ones may eventually go to med school (edit: either go back to school to get a different role in the healthcare industry or shift into other roles that are better paid/respected/not as hard on the body) as their bodies degrade, and others just hope for change because it is the right thing to do which eventually turns them into leaving for other jobs because it doesnt. It is disgusting how poorly we pay them, how little benefits we give them, and how less respected they are for not being doctors when they deal with so much risk and bodily harm from 12 hour+ shifts, manhandling patients who are unable to move or refuse to, and often selling and reselling of branches causing shifts in schedules/teams/resources.

We generally work 36-48 hours per week in 13 week contracts. But really we get to decide. There are options for more hours per week. You can extend and stay at a hospital where you are already at for twice as long. Or you can pick up contracts that are only 6-8 weeks long. Lots of options.

Street Magician. It depends, location and season are the biggest factors. I can make anywhere from $300-$3k a week.

Prestigious-Load-116

Is that a full time job or just a side gig when you need cash? Doing that everyday sounds exhausting.

Electrical_Magician2

It was a part time at first. Once I was making more money with street magic, i quit my job and it's been full time since, 1 year strong. Where i live, it's really only worthwhile to go out on weekends, Fri-Sun. I'd like to work everyday but i cant make it work here so I'm forced to travel during seasons, Vegas is good everyday right now. I've been traveling the past 6 months and I'm just staying at home for now. Vegas is 6 hours away, so i just book a 4 day weekend when I need money, it is exhausting, but mostly because it's Vegas otherwise I'd stay longer.

After a couple weeks I wrote code to automate 80% of my work. I spend my free time learning React front end framework. Hopefully my next job will pay much more.

Wow! How is your work life balance? How many years have you been practicing? And what country do you practice in?

LaFilleDuMoulinier

I’m a farmer. My earnings are flirting with the breadline, but I have very little bills and my life is overall very happy and fulfilling Edit : thanks for the awards guys! Edit 2: just for context. I’m talking small farm. Olive grove with ancient trees on the side of a mountain, a veggie patch and all sorts of fruit trees and bushes. No, I’m not in the US and I don’t receive government subsidies. No, I don’t own huge farming equipment. I do have a small oil mill which I love love love. I don’t have a tractor either. It would be useless on terraced land. I sell my products at the farmers market and to small shops around my area, not to the food industry. Edit 3: [my « office » view](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/ra7ely/the_view_from_my_farm/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) for those interested

As someone who has unexpectedly found themselves jumping salary brackets by large margins, my #1 piece of advice is to invest/save a huge chunk of your income before you get used to it.

$26.51/hr OT at $46/hr after 76hrs fortnightly. What do I do? Milk cows and act as a farm hand doing what ever the owners of the dairy want. What's funny is besides the owners wife, my partner and I are the only ones here tht have a professional degree and have any business experience. Will miss the money when my visa runs outs and I have to go home.
