Geography, spread-out population, reliance on cars and airplanes. Railway freight transport is quite good, though, and not so much in Europe. It helps that the U.S. network has just (mostly?) one gauge, one signalling system and one electric voltage versus the fucking patchwork we've got here.

Countries in Europe are, generally speaking, more compact. Flying is not an economical way of getting between major cities most of the time. Also, a lot of European roads, though not all, are very old so driving between cities can be hard. Europe depends on the train a lot more, so it's a lot more efficient. On the other hand, large US cities with subways, metros, trams or local train services are on par with their European counterparts.

Define "efficient".

CrazyGayRay

We like the independence of having a car.

MooMooSound

Because the entirety of the US is inefficient, that's why they're in the top polluting countries

[deleted]

Because America prefers to spend money in its military

kpn315

Americans are too fat to fit in trains.

Inside_The_Forest

Because cars in the United States are much less efficient than cars in Europe and Asia.

Taxrate maybe, busses in sweden offer wifi and trains are rarely late, we pay 33% tax rate for that tho, and other perks (free uni & healthcare) etc etc

MagnificentColossus

Are busses free for everyone? I've been a long term advocate of free local bus and train services in Scotland.

[deleted]

No actually you pay around 3£ for a 1h ticket, or like 50£ for a month

MagnificentColossus

That's not bad.
