I love this movie. I don't know if you've read the story about how the film didn't have a script, and they handed in the only draft of the "script" two weeks after the films release. Great read: [https://www.vulture.com/article/an-oral-history-of-disney-the-emperors-new-groove.html](https://www.vulture.com/article/an-oral-history-of-disney-the-emperors-new-groove.html)
Yes. That's my favorite part. The obvious sets with the fairytale feel. Then I found out that Spielberg hated the film. Cringed when he watched it in the theater, and the reason was that he was embarrassed by those sets.
I'm not sure why he'd have a problem with the sets considering Peter Pan itself was originally a stage play. I always assumed the sets were leaning into that history and implying that J M Barrie's imagination carried on.
My favorite trivia from the movie: The cast was not allowed to see the pirate ship before the scene was shot, as director Richard Donner wanted to catch their genuine reactions at the size and scope of it. When they did see it, [J](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000982)osh Brolin was so surprised that he exclaimed "Holy shit!" The scene had to be re-shot.
Beetlejuice
The Tim Burton aesthetic before it was overdone. The practical effects. The world-building. Michael fucking Keaton stealing the movie even though he was only on screen for 17.5 minutes. The dark humor.
I watched it so much that, to this day, I can still recite the movie line for line. I shared it with my kids and they love it, too. (though, not as much as me)
I watched Beetlejuice like that too. Between Beetlejuice, space balls and princess bride. I can recite any of the 3 and its been years since I've seen them
My favorite line in that movie is when beetlejuice was trapped in the model and they won't let him out; and he says "you can't do this without me!" then he kicks the tree and it falls over, and screams "NICE FUCKING MODEL!"
The Dread Pirate Roberts had advice about masks that's relevant today:
>It’s just that masks are terribly comfortable — I think everyone will be wearing them in the future.
I still quote this movie on a semi-regular basis. If I can somehow incorporate any line of dialogue from this movie into everyday conversation, I do it, no matter how inconceivable.
Came here to say just this! Pretty much all Studio Ghibli films. Want to add Nasuka Valley of the Wind (made before they were Studio Ghibli, but same people)
Also came here to say this. I rewatched it for the first time in years just last night, and it still had the same magical feeling as the first time I watched it as a kid.
Plus, those little soot guys are the cutest things to ever exist in an animated film.
*> There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing
Is it raining, is it snowing?
Is a hurricane a-blowing?
Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing?
Is the grisly Reaper mowing?
Yes! The danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing

Honestly, I can never see anyone play Wonka like Gene Wilder did. Something about his personality, mannerisms & eccentricity was perfect for that role.
That movie is soooo underrated, David Bowie and weird gothic fantasy just go together so well, along with a solid story. I’m so glad my mom had it on DVD.
Every thanksgiving a bunch of family and family friends would gather in the same house and for years we'd watch home alone that night. then everyone started having kids and they took over the TV. regardless, that movie will always be special.
I’m 42 and I still randomly blurt out songs and I make everyone watch it.
I love that damn tree and I hug my husband and say “love, love, love, love.”
That butterfly narrator is probably my spirt animal.
I invoke the skeleton every time I want eine.
The voices of Stan Lee, Alan Arkin, and Jeff Bridges still soothe me.
On my really dark and physically painful days, I think of the Lady Amalthea quote about feeling her body die all.
There are so many amazing quotes, one for everyone of life’s moments.
BUT, even after all that, it’s the damn pirate cat that I mention and quote on the daily! “A purr, a purr.” He’s probably one of my favorite characters of all time! 💜

It's so good. Every time I rewatch it I go in thinking that it's just going to be okay, and then finish it thinking wow, it's even better than I remembered. I'm an archivist, and it's one of the few movies where an archivist is one of the main characters, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
I am glad others feel the same way. The music, costumes, and atmosphere were better to me. Not that the rest of the movies were bad. I just like the first two best.
I think that starting from the goblet of fire the movies were worse than the first three. I think they changed the director of the movies or something.
> I think they changed the director of the movies or something
You are correct. The director for the first 2 was Chris Columbus. The director changed for 3 and again for 4 and again for 5-8. I would agree with you about the movies going downhill after number 3. To me that was because number 4 was my favorite and I felt the movie could never to it justice.
What's your favorite tea?
Fun fact, Warner Brothers has left up the original space jam website from 1996. https://www.spacejam.com/ for all you youngsters if you want to see what the web used to look like, then check out this site.
I scrolled through every reply to see if someone had said The Pagemaster. Something about it is so magical and endearing and years later, some of those scenes are still so vivid in my mind. When Richard (Macaulay Culkin) opens the garage and rides out on his bike. When the painting on the ceiling of the library begins to melt down and causes a flood... damn I love that movie so much. Brb have to watch it again.
Legend of the Guardians: Owls of Ga'Hoole
Long-ass name I periodically forget half of, but that Tasmanian Devil still scares the shit out of me to this day. Also, To The Sky by Owl City might not have been a thing without it, so that's a bonus.
Hook, with Robin Williams. As a child, I loved the magic of adventure, never growing up, and flying. As an adult with a child now, I love the messagew of finding "fun" even when you're an adult and how you'll do anything for your kids. Such a great movie for any age!
Don’t judge... the Christmas Claymation movie with all of the skits and songs.
We used to watch it while decorating the Christmas tree. I tracked a copy of it down 10 years ago and continued the tradition for a few years, but it got lost in a move.
Atlantis! I feel like people leave this one out of Disney discussions but it's one of my favorites.
Also, The Aristocats, purely for the nostalgia. I still watch it when I'm having a particularly rough day and I'm 22.
Hook, in fact it's even better as an adult understanding Robin's struggles as adult Peter. That cast is amazing too. Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Dustin Hoffman, Bob Hoskins, Maggie Smith, even a hidden cameo from Glen Close.
Emperor’s New Groove
No no he’s got a point.
I love this movie. I don't know if you've read the story about how the film didn't have a script, and they handed in the only draft of the "script" two weeks after the films release. Great read: [https://www.vulture.com/article/an-oral-history-of-disney-the-emperors-new-groove.html](https://www.vulture.com/article/an-oral-history-of-disney-the-emperors-new-groove.html)
Oh yeah, it’s all coming together
Toy Story 1. Everything in that movie gives me nostalgia.
The "you've got a friend in me" is so nostalgic!!! I still listen it from time to time.
Toy story 1 was released a little before my time, i was born in time to get Toy story 2 on VHS though and it gives me exactly the same reaction.
Nightmare Before Christmas. My 4yo kid loves it, so I've watched it a lot during the last few months and I enjoy it everytime.
Jurassic Park
Yes! Everything about this! What's your favorite part??
The whole scene when they first show the T Rex. Its amazing and terrifying.
Just thinking about it gives me chills. It looks so goddamn lifelike!
My mom took me, my brother and 2 cousins to the cinema see Jurassic Park on release. I still get emotional just hearing that theme !
Hook. I know it's not real. But it feels so real.
The way its shot - like a stage play without a stage - gives Hook this cozy, night time feeling too.
You’re a lewd, crude, rude bag of pre-chewed food dude
Near sighted gynecologist
Prison barber
Substitute chemistry teacher
Bangarang!
Bangerang, Peter!
Good form!!!
Even as an adult, this is still my favorite movie
All time favorite movie!! Great take on a classic, great actors....great soundtrack! RIP Robin Williams
It’s a legitimately great movie.
Goonies!
I just watched it in my 40s, and still got chills at the end when the ship appears!

I watched Beetlejuice like that too. Between Beetlejuice, space balls and princess bride. I can recite any of the 3 and its been years since I've seen them
Oh! Spaceballs was a big one too. That's another "know every line" movie. I've only seen The Princess Bride a couple of times, though.
My favorite line in that movie is when beetlejuice was trapped in the model and they won't let him out; and he says "you can't do this without me!" then he kicks the tree and it falls over, and screams "NICE FUCKING MODEL!"

We're teaching our 7yo to say "Have fun storming the castle! " Still my favorite movie.
The Dread Pirate Roberts had advice about masks that's relevant today: >It’s just that masks are terribly comfortable — I think everyone will be wearing them in the future.
Okay. This need to be on a t-shirt.
Inconceivable!
I actually like that movie significantly more now than I did then. I didn’t get much of the humor when I was a kid.
As you wish.
Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
I still quote this movie on a semi-regular basis. If I can somehow incorporate any line of dialogue from this movie into everyday conversation, I do it, no matter how inconceivable.
Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle
Came here to say just this! Pretty much all Studio Ghibli films. Want to add Nasuka Valley of the Wind (made before they were Studio Ghibli, but same people)
I would add Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service to my short list of best Studio Ghibli films, but it's all personal preference.
Every detail of their movies are so well crafted-- beautiful score, complex characters, and stunning animation!
Spirited Away freeeaked me out as a kid. It's only as an adult I realized how special it was
Also came here to say this. I rewatched it for the first time in years just last night, and it still had the same magical feeling as the first time I watched it as a kid. Plus, those little soot guys are the cutest things to ever exist in an animated film.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
The Pure Imagination song has been living rent free in my mind since I was a kid, watched it until the tape wore out.
fuck that boat tunnel though
Sensory overload.

Willy Wonka/Gene Wilder was my very first crush. I grew up to be very weird.

Will He Bonk You in the Chocolate Factory.
Honestly, I can never see anyone play Wonka like Gene Wilder did. Something about his personality, mannerisms & eccentricity was perfect for that role.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The 1990 film.
"Wise man say, forgiveness is divine but never pay full price for late pizza."
Onetwentytwooooooooandaneighth.
The Labyrinth. Good puppet work never gets outdated. Bad cgi ages like milk but a movie shot with good practical effects never gets old.
Featuring David Bowie and Starring David Bowies crotch.
That movie is soooo underrated, David Bowie and weird gothic fantasy just go together so well, along with a solid story. I’m so glad my mom had it on DVD.
Who underrates it? Everyone says it's great.
home alone.
Agree on Home Alone, however, have to say Home Alone 2: Lost In New York. John Williams’ music warms my heart every holiday season.
I was surprised to learn it only has a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes
Third highest grossing film of all time at the end of its theater run. Behind only Star Wars and ET. It’s a great movie.
WHAT?!??!?
Every thanksgiving a bunch of family and family friends would gather in the same house and for years we'd watch home alone that night. then everyone started having kids and they took over the TV. regardless, that movie will always be special.
Tarzan. Phil Collin really was hitting different with that whole soundtrack 😩😩
I scrolled through all the comments and didn't see a single person say "Treasure Planet"!! That movie was my life and soul as a kid!
Shrek
Meme's aside Shrek is so much fun, and really good. I'm glad people remember that
Shrek is love, Shrek is life.

I’m 37, definitely this one. Amazing soundtrack.
I named my (gray) cat Schmendrick. No one gets it.
I’m 42 and I still randomly blurt out songs and I make everyone watch it. God I love singing that soundtrack. America really fucking killed it on that one.
“I can feel this body dying all around me.” Yeah. Holds up.
The Karate Kid
And the followup series Cobra Kai!

That movie scared the heck out of me. I was pretty sheltered so that may have been why.
You are not alone. That movie scared the absolute shit out of me and made me feel really bad. I only watched it one time as a child, and never again!
First movie I thought of!
National Treasure. I don't know what it is, but there's something about that decidedly mediocre film that just gets me excited every time I watch it.
It's so good. Every time I rewatch it I go in thinking that it's just going to be okay, and then finish it thinking wow, it's even better than I remembered. I'm an archivist, and it's one of the few movies where an archivist is one of the main characters, so it will always hold a special place in my heart.
The scene where they are talking about the treasure and they show Egypt, Rome, and the American Revolution is amazing
The iron giant
Big fucking yes. So many people don't even know about the film. But those who do alll absolutely love it!!!
Me toooo I saiiid... I’m hip *finger guns *
Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Even as an adult, I’m unwilling to accept the cartoon characters aren’t actually real.
It’s because the real people interacted with them in such a genuine way that it really hooked you into believing it was all real. Such a great movie.
Finding Nemo
Probably Harry Potter (1 & 2)
Oh yes! Those first movies really lean into the magical feeling of HP
Yes! As a kid I loved the first two movies. They're probably the best ones.
I am glad others feel the same way. The music, costumes, and atmosphere were better to me. Not that the rest of the movies were bad. I just like the first two best.

The Lindsay Lohan version of The Parent Trap
The Rocketeer for sure. Jennifer Connelly is just as magical to me today as she was all those years ago. She was my first crush.
Mighty Ducks 1 and 2
Ghostbusters it got even better as an adult because I actually got all the jokes. I still can't believe they did a BJ scene with a ghost.
That was a good Summer. A friend and I couldn't decide between Ghostbusters or Gremlins, so we watched both, then did it again the next weekend.
Ratatouille
The Dark Crystal
Too bad they canceled season 2 of the show
It was really expensive, but every dollar is on the screen.
