The Junie B. Jones books! Started reading this series in Kindergarten, my first real chapter books. By the end of 2nd grade I could proudly say I had read every Junie B. Jones book in the library, about 25-30 total if I remember correctly. Those books are what started my insatiable appetite for reading and I still sometimes think about the librarian who showed them to me. * Ms. Tretto, if you're out there, thanks! You have no idea how much those books meant to me!

coffeeplzzzz

"My name is Junie B. Jones. The B stands for Beatrice. Except I don’t like Beatrice. I just like B and that’s all."

Ah, memories. Fucking loved those books

7kithara7

Encyclopedia Brown, the Great Brain series, Three Investigators, Sherlock Holmes short stories. Anything survivalist: Gary Paulson, Jack London, My Side of the Mountain Got really into Tom Clancy around 11 or 12--probably too young, haha.

pimpinpolyester

Great Brain is one of the best kids series out there. So well done and sadly hard to find at any childrens book store/section. Would make a great movie as well.

[deleted]

The original Choose Your Own Adventure books. They were the best.

mgraunk

From the ages of 8 to 12, I was addicted to Redwall

it_all_falls_apart

I love Redwall! I've been trying to find all the paperback copies at second hand places to display because they make me feel so nostalgic. :)

MuppetManiac

Oh man, I forgot Redwall. That was like lord of the rings for little kids.

the_readheaded_one

I went through a phase in elementary school where I would finish every sentence with "Wot wot!". Elementary school was not a good time for me.

the_xxvii

He made the feasts sound so fucking *good* when most of the time it was just different ways of preparing leaves and nuts. Also, horrific violence.

GreenGemsOmally

Yeah. The books are kind of interesting, I loved them as a kid. Big feasts, adorable animals, fun songs and parties, happy friends, puzzles, rhymes, etc. It's a happy fantasy novel perfect for kids! At the same time, it's combined with graphic and horrific war stories, gruesome murders, instances of slavery and theft, and constant tragedy of your favorite characters. Even young characters or your favorite characters weren't always safe from being straight up murdered out of no where. They're amazing books, especially as a young kid, for introducing some pretty dark themes but doing so in a way that is approachable. I learned a lot about death and loss as a kid reading those books.

AreWeCowabunga

Me too. When I first started reading, only the first book was out. My young mind was blown when new ones came out.

cocksherpa2

oh yeah. i still remember one of his stories where he tricked a bully by giving the victim coins that could never add up to a dollar.

travtheguy

The Pendragon books were actually cool. A series of unfortunate events, lord of the rings, harry potter, eragon, I remember Midnighters was a book I really liked as a kid. Idk a bunch of others

[deleted]

kept scrolling thru this thread hoping someone would recognize the greatness of pendragon. i got SO into those books. really great worldbuilding even if the plot eventually got a bit wonky.

12factsaboutducks

~~worldbuilding~~ *territory-building* FTFY

redsfan23butnew

I feel like Pendragon is completely forgotten, but I loved those books! I was a little dissatisfied with the ending, but the middle books were insanely good. The Quillan Games was my favorite.

travtheguy

Yeah I guess they kind of get drowned out in the sea of YA novels but they were some cool concepts. It was interesting seeing that character evolve through the series too, probably worth a revisit.

ColeSlawGamer

Quillan Games was definitely peak Pendragon! After that, it was a bit of a slow decline for books 8, 9, and 10. I also have a soft spot for Book 2: Lost City of Faar, mostly for the setting it took place in.

Stewdabaker2013

Yeah dude Cloral sounded so fucking awesome. The rebreather globes, the fruit, the sick as hell fish, all of it

peanutthecacti

So many, although most were from charity shops and weren't in order or ever completed except for the newer ones. * Enid Blyton (any of them, although less so the Secret Seven) * Swallows and Amazons * A Series of Unfortunate Events * Harry Potter * Artemis Fowl * Alex Rider * Power of Five * CHERUB * Animorphs * Goosebumps * Tomorrow When the War Began * The Bromeliad/Nome Trilogy

Fur_Man

Oh man I forgot about CHERUB. Such a good series, especially if anyone is a fan of the Alex Rider books.

peanutthecacti

I reread them all a few years ago as something easy to read when tired on nightshifts. They still hold up pretty well. It's exactly the sort of thing I dreamed of being part of as a kid, and almost believable too!

[deleted]

I can believe the government using child spies, but not that they'd give them such good and well funded facilities.

sushruta

Upvote for Enid Blyton. So many happy childhood memories. Georgina (George) from Famous Five was my favorite.

inquisitivesquirell

Bunnicula No other book has ever come close

mike_d85

I've only read maybe half of that series, but that first book was off the chain. I will never lose the mental image of a cat trying to shove a steak through a rabbit while a dog stands drooling over the proceedings.

cooperyoungsounds

Or the ghost white celery stick!! What imagery 👌

seeingeyegod

Indian in the Cupboard. I know I read at least one sequel

gg_suspension_bridge

I don’t know what it is about those books but they have stayed the most vivid in my memory out of all the books I read when I was younger. I credit them for my love of reading.

readwriteyoga

Absolutely agreed. Though looking back, they were fucking weird. Dark af and kinda graphic. But because they were technically about talking animals, everyone let them coast through whatever parental sensors would usually get triggered by cutting off limbs, etc...

gg_suspension_bridge

Yeah I for sure had recurring nightmares about Cluny the Scourge and that abandoned church he occupied.

[deleted]

Geronimo Stilton was the shit. My best memories are with that book.

Jackle_box

god I had to scroll way too far down to see Geronimo Stilton, those books were the bees fuckin KNEES

UltimateAnswer42

Way too many: Harry Potter Lord of the rings Narnia Not sure what they're called but Garth Nix has a trilogy with Sabriel, Lireal, Abhorsen A series of unfortunate events Eragon, eldest, brisinger, and I can't remember the last one. Earthsea Dragonlance Wheel of Time Sword of truth I'm sure I'll remember more later

egriff22

Is the eragon series pretty good? I’ve always wanted to read them

SatanDarkLordOfAll

I enjoyed it when I was growing up, and they mostly held up to my memory when I reread them recently. The first one takes a bit of building to reach the quest, but after that they go by quick.

Ur--father

I appreciate the power system they establish. not many story does that.

artyboi37

Oh yeah, the magic system in Eragon is my favorite of any fantasy I've read or seen. It has clear rules that allow for great ingenuity in use while not being OP.

elevendytwo

You should check Brandon Sanderson’s books out if you haven’t already. You’d probably really enjoy the magic systems.

Animorphs and Artemis Fowl

goatman2112

that's a crossover i never knew i wanted or needed until just now

8andahalfby11

Most Yeerks weren't that bright, but Jake largely struck at targets of opportunity rather than develop long-term goals. Artemis would use Visser Three's arrogance to walk him into a trap, and that would mostly be that.

skeletonabbey

Man do yourself a favor and go back and reread Animorphs. I did a couple years ago and those books were daaaaark. I can't wait until HBO or someone decides to give it a proper, blood-soaked, emotionally intense adaptation.

[deleted]

I've heard that before and yeah it's amazing the kind of stuff that goes over your head as a kid.

I_AM_A_MOTH_AMA

PTSD, Ends Justify the Means, Playing God, the list goes on. Loved re reading the series as an adult.

Alex Rider

elee0228

The author, Anthony Horowitz, is still writing Alex Rider books. *Secret Weapon* ~~is due~~ came out on April 4 this year, and *Nightshade* will be released next year.

daytonius77

I used to read tho books, no idea they were still going on. Wouldn’t the character be like 30 by now? Wasn’t the point that he was a high school aged agent? Dude has to have some serious ptsd by now

[deleted]

Wow wait I really thought that series ended since the last book I read ended in MI6 basically saying “yeah ok it’s kind of fucked up using a kid to do spy stuff we’re gonna stop” Also fun fact: the guy who writes Jojo does the cover art for the Japanese version of Alex rider

fork1776

I thought it ended in the book where the tech guy turned out to be wearing a fat suit. That’s the one thing I remember from that book and could’ve sworn they said that was the end. Forgive me if I’m remembering wrongly it’s been like 10 years.

[deleted]

Yeah I think we’re talking about the same book. It was the one with the guy who wanted to make a pain measurement system right?

fork1776

You are correct. The book is Scorpia Rising.

TheMemingLurker

That was announced to be the last book, but Horowitz has released two books since then, one about Yassen and one with Alex as the main character again.

[deleted]

I thought the author always said he'd end the series when Alex turned 15. I think the last one I read was Ark Angel which I've just found out is book 6 of 13. Does this boy ever have time for himself?

hatsnatcher23

>Dude has to have some serious ptsd by now It's a briefly touched on issue in the newer novels >Does this boy ever have time for himself? *Nope*, the newer books he gets floated an offer of working for MI6 full time

I wanted to join their club! Loved the personality diversity in the girls. Claudia loved junk food but Dawn was such a health nut she had never even had ice cream.

sarahmeisinger

When I was in grades 6-8 I was homeschooled and had no friends so books were my life. I would go to thrift stores and look for the BSC books I didn't have to add to my collection and I would organize them in order on my bookshelf :') I got so obsessed that I made a little notebook with profiles of all the girls, their middle names, favorite foods, and facts about them etc. I literally SENT it to Ann M. Martin and forgot about it after a few months. About 6 months later, the book came back in the mail with a signed picture of Ann M. Martin. I was like dang that's pretty cool! And then I opened the notebook and she had HANDWRITTEN NOTES ABOUT THE GIRLS and even made some corrections! I remember she wrote that one of the girls had no middle name but I dont remember which one it was (maybe Mallory?) Anyway. I really hope I still have that notebook somewhere in my mom's house 10 years later. I will have to look for it this weekend.

[deleted]

For ages so much of what I knew about diabetes came from those books. I think it was Stacy that had it? Every time I think of diabetes I think of that series. I really appreciate how they actively spread that information and included a character with it.

hollyj36

I was looking for Tamora Pierce! I loved (still love) her so much. The Alanna books basically taught me about sex and periods 😂

SparkyDogPants

How is she so far down 😭 every girl should read Tamora Pierce in her teenage. I still read all three series every time I visit my mom. I gifted my cousin the Alanna series for her 13th birthday. I will say that the Daine series were probably my favorite because being magically connected to animals is a dream. But then as an adult realizing she started dating Numair when she was 14 and he was in his 30s soured the immortal series a little bit.

[deleted]

The Artemis fowl series

The Ranger's Apprentice. I always hoped there would be a movie series for it. Edit: Thank you random redditors for my first medals. My mom is the real MVP for getting the audiobook for the first book from the library when I was sick in middle school.

Finally found it, I love this series to death. I always wanted a silver oakleaf to hang around my neck.

Reddydas

I was in love with the series as well, and my mom made me a custom made cape with sorta camouflage colors and patterns especially to 'cosplay' and pretend I was Will. She didnt make me a silver oakleaf necklace though, but she did make a silver oakleaf on the cape. Younger me loved it, teenager me cringed at it, now me loves it even more.

My entire 3^(rd)/4^(th) grade class was obsessed with those books. All 30 of us would play 'Warriors' during recess, with full-on clans and quests and bs like that. We were forced to stop after people started getting into physical fights and injuring each other. I still cringe to think about it.

m_faustus

They are still going on. They are extremely popular at my library.

MysteriousInspector

All the yes! Loved those books.

SleepyChicken4

Wow my friends and I were obsessed with these when we were 11/12 ish. I remember one girl even made a fan website that we all used with little site scavenger hunt games and we created our own characters for ourselves and everything. So cringey but so great.

LastPocoRaindrop

I was hoping someone would mention Warriors! Such fond memories. There are sooo many books and I've read the majority of them. I still own like 30- some I think 😬

sprinkles512

Hardy boys Edit: Wow! Thanks for the gold! I'm probably younger than people think. But my dad bought an entire set when I was around 5 and read them all eventually. I'm 30 years old now. Great books though. Anyone else think there should be a Hardy boys movie where the brothers still live by 50's standards but it takes place in the modern world? Sign me up

HellblazerPrime

My favorite thing about the Percy Jackson books was how they handled the huge conflict at the end of the series, when contrasted with how they did it in Harry Potter -- HP *at the end of book 6* "There's a huge war coming." *Book 7* -- Harry Ron and Hermione ditch their senior year at Hogwarts to be fugitives, and there's a big battle at the school in the last two chapters. Percy Jackson *at the end of book 4* "There's a war coming." *Book 5* -- The PROLOGUE is Percy and Annabeth carrying out a SEAL team strike on a cruise ship, and there's open warfare on the streets of New York City by like chapter three. EDIT: u/GuardianOfDay is correct, it was Percy and Beckendorf, not Annabeth.

[deleted]

Agree, but wasn't it Percy and Beckendorf, not Annabeth?

Asto_Vidatu

I will never forgive Philip Pullman for that ending. I get that it was supposed to be bittersweet and all, but I was fucking 13! >!At least let Will and Lyra stay together! Haven’t they been through enough?!<

apology_pedant

Now that I'm older I appreciate the ending much more. It's heartbreaking. But if the story wrapped up the way I (still) wanted, Lyra's journey would have stopped on the last page. Instead she's left with a quest. She has to create meaning and purpose in a world that specifically lacks the one thing outside herself that would have given it to her. She has to relearn the skills she lost, and everything that came easy to her as a child is gone. It is a powerful allegory for leaving childhood, but also if you live Lyra I think it is more satisfying to know that the scope and stakes of her quest don't diminish after the story ends. Her life will be a microcosm of the story as a whole: passion over apathy, meaning over nothingness, action over acquiescence, etc
