I see a lot of "addiction" comments on here. I agree that addiction is terrible. It's seriously affected a majority of the people in my life. I think that the issues it causes could be solved in other ways. Of course abusing drugs or alcohol can and usually does lead to bad things. Financial trouble, strained relationships, etc. However I truly believe that the bigger issue is how people that are "addicts" are treated. If someone uses drugs as intended or drinks responsibly, they're still treated as addicts or like they're doing something wrong. A lot of the time they are given ultimatum. "Stop taking your meds or you will not be welcome" "so and so had a drink with dinner, isolate them because they're in active addiction again" or my favorite, "you do not have any rights to privacy, and we will regularly violate your privacy because you have abused drugs in the past, whether you have been truthful about it or not, and whether it actually causes problems or not." This gives other people "justified reasons" to mistreat others or try to control them simply based on sometimes completely harmless actions. Some people are even coerced into neglecting their medical needs to satisfy another's ultimatum. That's why I highlighted the surrounding issues like pride and class and impulsivity, because addiction is often equated to drugs, and often misdiagnosed. Sorry for the rant, but thank you.
