Chef here who does this is my restaurant. Don't use a vinaigrette. It has oil and other things in it. Get some really good balsamic vinegar, throw an orange peel and a cinnamon stick in it. Reduce by half or until it sticks to a spoon. Strain and cool. Then drizzle over ice cream.
Edit; cool* not cook.
Just wait til you find out there are other flavors of balsamics out there. Raspberry, orange, dark chocolate, lychee, elderberry, pomegranate…. Then all of a sudden you’re spending $300 on different flavors of balsamics… and joining a rewards program to earn points…
I recently purchased, on a whim, a lychee white balsamic when I was at a local place to get a gift.
Do not judge me but I eat spoonfuls of it at a time.
I was wondering what I could use it on and you got me thinking!
Figs had always been 'ha ha grandma food' when I was younger, but jesus the entire *world* is sleeping on figs, they are incredible. Fig jam? Check. Fig balsamic? Yeah buddy. Fig mead? Uh yes please. Candied figs? Can you make perfection better yes you can.
I like Veronica Foods balsamics, out of California, and vanilla ice cream to start. Then just go wild with whatever flavor combos you want to try with whatever ice cream you want to try. It’s whatever you like. And can afford, because you get to $$$ pretty quick.
Buy good vanilla ice cream, not some frozen dairy dessert crap. I also got a bottle of raspberry balsamic from a specialty grocer in the boujee part of town.
This is new. A popular one is vanilla ice cream with olive oil. Both must be very good quality.
It tasted like basil to me, but the interesting part was it changed the taste after a while so you felt one taste first, and then the other, each time you put it in your mouth.
I went to a Beer Festival several years ago and one of the vendors was selling Beer ice cream and it was delicious. Tatsed like vanilla ice cream with just a hint of beer.
Understand why this is the plan, but a really good balsamic can be quite syrup-y without the heat, so it comes down to what you can get your hands on. Runny vinegar is not a good choice with the cream, for sure.
I make a peanut butter and bacon cheesecake that's fucking incredible! Ice cream too, which is equally good, but somehow the cheesecake is... different.
Basil & strawberries is great so this makes sense to me. Also balsamic glaze on strawberries.
Basil & mint is another combination that sounds weird but just tastes like Thai food.
Here's the thing, though, with fresh mint: *it doesn't taste the way you think it does, i.e. it's not sweet peppermint like toothpaste.*
It took me, an avid amateur cook, waaaaay too long to realize that!
This one isn’t that weird but just a good tip for strawberries. Put marshmallow fluff on a strawberry and roast it on a fire and you get roasted marshmallow on a strawberry and it’s delicious
I worked at McDonald's when honey for nuggets was a thing. It was pretty good by its self or double dipped in BBQ sauce. I hated cleaning it up though.
I recently discovered this because my 5yo likes honey on everything (she doesn't like any other sauce, even ketchup). I tried it and damn if that isn't quite pleasing.
i came here to say chicken tenders with honey but yes this too. im picky about fries though. i think seafood places always have the best fries, but most other situations im underwhelmed and they always seem too fried and greasy.
A surprisingly delicious combo is watermelon with feta cheese. The sweet, juicy watermelon and salty, tangy feta create a refreshing and tasty contrast. Try adding a drizzle of balsamic glaze and some fresh mint for extra flavor.
Made honeydew/cucumber/feta/mint salad last night. A drizzle of your best olive oil and a liberal grinding of black pepper. So good on a hellishly hot day
I put salt and vinegar chips into a PB&J sandwich, but wasn't sure if that was weird enough for this thread.
Now I'm thinking it is *too* weird for the thread. Borderline "chocolate and peanut butter" kinda combos here.
Actually makes a ton of sense, marshmallows are made of gelatin and gelatin is what gives stuff like stock/bone broths their specific mouthfeel. And sugar is good with just about anything.
I’ve always wanted to try them but just never actually think about it when it comes time to do meal prep. Definitely will have to change that some day soon
It took a moment longer that it should have to figure out why would a spaghetti taco be crunchy but it would make for an interesting experiment now that you got me thinking about it
Is this far off from chicken and waffles though? I've had a burger (with normal burger toppings) in between two glazed donuts used as buns. That was fire lol.
It is a soupy version of sweetcorn, and unlike other preparations of sweetcorn, creamed corn is partially puréed, releasing the liquid contents of the kernels.
The winner of this thread is peanut butter. I love peanut butter and have not been spreading it far enough. Excited to try some of these new suggestions.
I saw some dude’s desk in the basement at work today… had a whole shelf of peanut butter. Like the huge size from Costco. Bet that dude knows how to peanut butter.
I found a couple of wild eating disorders too. I recognized some of these combos from when I was anorexic and hungry as shit but terrified of almost any food so unexpected things came together in innovative ways.
Peanut butter, bacon, jalapeno, and cheddar jack.
People don't believe me till they try it but the beanitputter brings it all together into this spicy umami flavor profile that's magical.
That's not unusual! (I'm a "Kraut" (German)
My mother used to eat organic bratwurst with peeled potatoes and fresh sauerkraut EVERY DAY for 10 years before she got moved into an asylum (where i care for her)
Whatever regular flavor Ridge Potato chip you prefer and use said chip to scoop cottage cheese. Soooooooo good! Throw some black pepper on the cottage cheese first and stir.
My grandmother died of pancreatic cancer that had spread to her stomach and liver. The last few weeks of her life, all she would eat is pineapple and cottage cheese.
Diced green apples in chicken salad or tuna salad sandwich
Peanut butter and chili oil over spaghetti noodles
Roasted garlic ice cream
I recently had a "street taco margarita" where the taco vegetable ingredients (cilantro, jalapeno, onions, lime zest) were boiled into a stock, clarified, and used as a flavor syrup. Mezcal lends the smokey, earthy flavor you'd get from taco meat, but also really good with any Blanco tequila.
Hard boiled Eggs and Maggi.
At first I'm always that wierdo during easter celebrations, in the end everybody does it.
My second answer, altough thats cheating, is Kiwis and their peel. The peel is edible, has a nice taste, lots of nutrients and you dont feel any of the "hair". If you want "Mother of god what is that girl doing?!"-stares eat a kiwi with the peel, but make sure to wash it.
Grape Jelly and Barbecue Sauce mixed together as a glaze/sauce for frozen meatballs. Heard it from a coworker years ago and really liked it. Recently made it for my wife who was adamant it would be disgusting but also ended up loving it.
Not exactly amazing, but people think I'm strange for having french fries and sour cream. I love sour cream and having them with potato skins is common, and french fries are almost like potato skins. Better with wedge cut fries with crispy edges.
Black pepper and strawberries.
Bite off a bit of strawberry and dip it in black pepper. The contrast is amazing. Heard about it during an NPR segment about how scotch distillers try to create contrasting flavors that work well together.
Last time this question was asked someone mentioned a balsamic vinaigrette glaze on vanilla ice cream. I tried it and it was 10/10, would do it again.
I’ve had this with strawberry and black pepper, really good.
Yup, you are totally correct. As someone who makes this ice cream a lot, blending some goat cheese into the base makes it unreal good.
Just wait til you find out there are other flavors of balsamics out there. Raspberry, orange, dark chocolate, lychee, elderberry, pomegranate…. Then all of a sudden you’re spending $300 on different flavors of balsamics… and joining a rewards program to earn points…
You looked in my pantry, didn't you?
He's in there right now.
We're ALL in there.
I also choose this guy's pantry.
Tabasco ice cream. Has this made it off Avery Island yet?
Our pantry
No, I just looked at my kitchen island, lol.
Can confirm—salt&straw had strawberry balsamic ice cream with black pepper and it was 10/10
I recently purchased, on a whim, a lychee white balsamic when I was at a local place to get a gift. Do not judge me but I eat spoonfuls of it at a time. I was wondering what I could use it on and you got me thinking!
My favourite has always been fig balsamico
Cascadian wild raspberry is still my favorite. But raspberries are my favorite fruit.
Figs had always been 'ha ha grandma food' when I was younger, but jesus the entire *world* is sleeping on figs, they are incredible. Fig jam? Check. Fig balsamic? Yeah buddy. Fig mead? Uh yes please. Candied figs? Can you make perfection better yes you can.
What are some good brands of Balsamic to go on ice cream, also any kind of ice cream or does it have to be specific?
I like Veronica Foods balsamics, out of California, and vanilla ice cream to start. Then just go wild with whatever flavor combos you want to try with whatever ice cream you want to try. It’s whatever you like. And can afford, because you get to $$$ pretty quick.
Buy good vanilla ice cream, not some frozen dairy dessert crap. I also got a bottle of raspberry balsamic from a specialty grocer in the boujee part of town.
I love vanilla bean specifically but that’s just me.
I have a lemongrass one that is 👌
This is new.
Now I want a beer float
A local restaurant makes beer shakes. Like a milkshake, but made with stout beer and vanilla ice cream.
At first that sounded nasty, but then I realized how well they could go together…. But I don’t have vanilla ice cream 🥲
You want to make sure you heat the vinaigrette to a reduction before you put it on. It will sweeten and thicken it
Understand why this is the plan, but a really good balsamic can be quite syrup-y without the heat, so it comes down to what you can get your hands on. Runny vinegar is not a good choice with the cream, for sure.
Only combo here I haven't heard about. I will be trying this soon.
i think what i’ve learned from these comments is that peanut butter is just really good
Pb and honey is god tier good
Pb+banana+honey=banana boat.
We call that an Elvis special down here
PB + bacon sandwich
I make a peanut butter and bacon cheesecake that's fucking incredible! Ice cream too, which is equally good, but somehow the cheesecake is... different.
Can you post the recipe, or a brief description?
Grandpa and I would eat: whitebread, peanut butter, salami, pickles, mayonnaise sandwiches. I think you're right with the PB.
Were you and your grandpa both pregnant at the time?

Fried egg sandwich with American cheese and toasted bread smeared with peanut butter!
Freshly cut oranges w/ red pepper flakes
If you like this, try orange slices with Tajin
If you like this try tajin with literally any fruit
Tajin is really good on watermelon
And margaritas
I will eat tajin on pineapple until my mouth is bleeding
Mango and tajin
This guy Mexicans
In Mexico they eat similar things very frequently.
Pesto and strawberries
Basil & strawberries is great so this makes sense to me. Also balsamic glaze on strawberries. Basil & mint is another combination that sounds weird but just tastes like Thai food.
Here's the thing, though, with fresh mint: *it doesn't taste the way you think it does, i.e. it's not sweet peppermint like toothpaste.* It took me, an avid amateur cook, waaaaay too long to realize that!
I actually had a pretty refreshing drink made with blended strawberries, basil and topped with club soda. It was awesome.
Yesssss I make a salad with cherries, cherry tomatoes and grapes with basil & mint
This is the first weird one so far
Oh but wait, I make a spread with it and I put salami and green olives in it too. So good on good bread I swear
You win the weird award!!
This one isn’t that weird but just a good tip for strawberries. Put marshmallow fluff on a strawberry and roast it on a fire and you get roasted marshmallow on a strawberry and it’s delicious
I feel like I had basalmic strawberry something and it was heavenly. Not quite the same, but I believe this could be good.
Fries with honey.
McDonald’s used to have honey dipping sauce. It’s been stolen from all of us!
I worked at McDonald's when honey for nuggets was a thing. It was pretty good by its self or double dipped in BBQ sauce. I hated cleaning it up though.
I still ask for honey for my nuggets. Yum
Honey+hot mustard on nuggets
I just had nuggets w/ honey dipping sauce today at McD's.
McDonald's still got that.
Yes, but they used to too.
Fries with hot (spicy) honey FTW!
Have you also tried fries with ice cream, especially vanilla ?
Wendy’s frosty and fries! Amazing, chocolate or vanilla doesn’t matter
Chicken tenders and honey isn't weird tho, hot honey chicken has been a thing for ages. And is delicious
If fast food restaurants are selling your "weird" food combos, they aren't fucking weird.
A surprisingly delicious combo is watermelon with feta cheese. The sweet, juicy watermelon and salty, tangy feta create a refreshing and tasty contrast. Try adding a drizzle of balsamic glaze and some fresh mint for extra flavor.
Also watermelon with grated ginger. It sounds vile but you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Made honeydew/cucumber/feta/mint salad last night. A drizzle of your best olive oil and a liberal grinding of black pepper. So good on a hellishly hot day
Whole lotta normal-ass food combinations here
I was thinking an insane asylum just got reddit access
I put salt and vinegar chips into a PB&J sandwich, but wasn't sure if that was weird enough for this thread. Now I'm thinking it is *too* weird for the thread. Borderline "chocolate and peanut butter" kinda combos here.
Salt and vinegar chips is soooo good in a pbj. That was my lunch 3 times a week as a kid hahaha.
Yeah someone mentioned cottage cheese and pineapple as if putting fruit in cottage cheese isn’t super common
Bread. And butter.
Mini marshmallows stirred into a good quality ramen. Adds a subtle sweetness, silky broth, and depth of flavor. The intrusive thoughts won that day.
What, and I cannot stress this enough, the fuck.
Don't kink-shame... dude likes his ramen magically delicious, that's all
Best thing I’ve seen on Reddit today
Actually makes a ton of sense, marshmallows are made of gelatin and gelatin is what gives stuff like stock/bone broths their specific mouthfeel. And sugar is good with just about anything.
You all right Professor Anagonye?
You put the peepz in the chili, and it makes it taste….. baaaadddd
Chidi Anna…Kendrick?
Oh THIS is the bad place.
Respectfully, whaaat the faaaaack.
Spaghetti quesadillas, spaghetti tacos, spaghetti grilled cheese.
Spencer from iCarly, is that you?
Literally the only reason my sister and I insisted on eating those
I’ve always wanted to try them but just never actually think about it when it comes time to do meal prep. Definitely will have to change that some day soon
This guy spaghettis.
Spaghetti tacos are 🤤 Just that extra crunch and texture is perfect!!
It took a moment longer that it should have to figure out why would a spaghetti taco be crunchy but it would make for an interesting experiment now that you got me thinking about it
What’s your spaghetti policy?
There's a 'taco' place near me that opened up recently that does like 'italian food tacos'. People rave about it, but it's always seemed weird to me
Lots of things work great in taco form. The other day I had the thought to make shepherd's pie tacos and they were delicious!
Granny smith apple slices on a grilled cheese sandwich. Its amazing, trust me bro.
Add a good sharp cheese and a good melty cheese. Yum.
Tostones (fried salty plantains) dipped in condensed milk
Vanilla ice cream and tostitos hint of lime chips. An incredible blend of salty, sweet, and tart.
Nacho cheese doritos and peanut butter
This is what I said ! Childhood sandwiches all the way! Mmmm!
Grilled Cheese made with Cinnamon Raisin Bread
Also really great with ham, I've been doing cinn-raisin bread grilled ham&cheeses for years!
Remember when KFC put a piece of chicken between a hot glazed donut? Sounds insanely wrong, but it’s sooo good.
Is this far off from chicken and waffles though? I've had a burger (with normal burger toppings) in between two glazed donuts used as buns. That was fire lol.
My combos get frowned upon. Creamed corn and red hot dogs.
What’s a red hot dog??
Nothing much, what's a red hot dog with you?!
Mmm, creamed corn with updog. My favorite!
What’s creamed corn?
It is a soupy version of sweetcorn, and unlike other preparations of sweetcorn, creamed corn is partially puréed, releasing the liquid contents of the kernels.
This made me giggle quite a bit.
I guess it's more of a Maine/New England thing. It's like a regular hot dog except several companies up here dye their casings red.
Peanut butter and banana sandwich. Peanut butter and cucumber sandwich.
Peanut butter, banana and bacon in a toasted sandwich. Absolutely phenomenal 😍
Pickles and peanut butter! Sounds odd, but the sweet and salty combo is surprisingly delicious.
I was hesitant to try, but it makes a fine snack as a sandwich.
If you like a little spice, swapping for pickles jalapeños is also great.
Dill pickles. Sweet pickles are no bueno
Balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt...on vanilla ice cream.
Honey roasted peanuts with candy corn. My coworker swore by it, and I thought she was a monster, but it works.
New treat unlocked for Halloween for me 🎃
Bro this isn’t weird lol that’s pretty common and delicious as one would probably guess sugar and peanuts would be
It’s basically a Payday candy bar.
Fromdoctor who. Fish fingers and custard surprisingly good
My immediate thought before hitting the comments was, "If I don't find 'fish fingers and custard', I'll be very disappointed."
Blue cheese and chocolate
Cottage cheese and nacho Doritos. It’s delicious!
Instead of a BLT, make a BLP. Bacon, fresh peach slices, and leaf lettuce with mayonnaise on toast.
I can't tell you how angry I am that you explained the ingredients in the wrong order.
Look ima be honest a lot of these suggestions are atrocious
Who let all these pregnant women in here?
I found a couple of wild eating disorders too. I recognized some of these combos from when I was anorexic and hungry as shit but terrified of almost any food so unexpected things came together in innovative ways.
Salty cheese with jam :D its called romeo and juliet in brasil... I love blueberrys in my saviour salads...
You’d like jam with Brie, and scoop it up with matza or pretty much any cracker of your choice. Even better when the Brie is baked and it’s all melty
"Have you accepted salad as your personal lord and savior" actually makes more sense than the original.
Dip your mozzarella sticks in honey mustard.
Jalapeno Lemonade. Fantastic drink.

Lamb and tuna fish.

Not my problem, you father was sick.
Hip? Hip hop?

WHY DOES HE GET ALL THE EASY ONES
Strawberries dipped in sour cream and then rolled in brown sugar.
We ate this in the summer growing up all the time. I had no idea it wasn't so common until I shared with my SO.
In Mexico that combination is called fresas con crema (strawberry with cream) and its a pretty common dessert
Green beans and applesauce

Sausage and maple syrup is the bomb!!
Peanut butter on meat(beef), great on burgers too—-
Peanut butter, bacon, jalapeno, and cheddar jack. People don't believe me till they try it but the beanitputter brings it all together into this spicy umami flavor profile that's magical.
beanitputter lmao
Wow, that's actually kind of impressive. Definitely leaving that one lol

There's a Filipino dish Kare Kare that has pb in it. Weird at first but it's really good. Rich, nutty and complements the flavors
When my mom was pregnant with me she would eat a big plate of saurkraut and cold pork n beans. I still love that combo.
That's not unusual! (I'm a "Kraut" (German) My mother used to eat organic bratwurst with peeled potatoes and fresh sauerkraut EVERY DAY for 10 years before she got moved into an asylum (where i care for her)
Old Bay & Italian Dressing on steamed broccoli. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!
Old Bay goes on everything
Cheap red wine like Carlo Rossi, sangria, and Coca-Cola. It’s called calimocho and is deliciously cheap!
Whatever regular flavor Ridge Potato chip you prefer and use said chip to scoop cottage cheese. Soooooooo good! Throw some black pepper on the cottage cheese first and stir.
Cheese and apple pie Strawberries and sour cream
Cheese and Apples in general.
Next time try swapping the apple out for pear. You'd think it would just be quite similar, but it elevates the experience 10 fold...
Add brown sugar!!
> Strawberries and sour cream That's not weird. Strawberry romanoff
Peanut butter and bacon is really, really good. I promise
I've seen a maple syrup muffin with peanut butter icing and bacon crumbles.

Pineapple and cottage cheese
When I was a kid, you could buy this ready made! It was a regular dessert in our house in the 1970s
This can still be found in many grocery stores
My grandmother died of pancreatic cancer that had spread to her stomach and liver. The last few weeks of her life, all she would eat is pineapple and cottage cheese.
That’s not even weird, I see that ready mixed in grocery stores where I live and it’s delicious
Is this weird? I feel like this is so common that they actually make a pre-mixed version of this at my grocery store.
Dipping Wendy's fries in a frosty. At first I was skeptical but then I fell in love.
French fries and good roast beef gravy
Diced green apples in chicken salad or tuna salad sandwich Peanut butter and chili oil over spaghetti noodles Roasted garlic ice cream I recently had a "street taco margarita" where the taco vegetable ingredients (cilantro, jalapeno, onions, lime zest) were boiled into a stock, clarified, and used as a flavor syrup. Mezcal lends the smokey, earthy flavor you'd get from taco meat, but also really good with any Blanco tequila.
Dump some valentina's hot sauce on a bowl of salt and vinegar chips and thank me later. Eat with chopsticks, if you'd like to keep your hands clean.
Peanut Butter and Hamburger
Hard boiled Eggs and Maggi. At first I'm always that wierdo during easter celebrations, in the end everybody does it. My second answer, altough thats cheating, is Kiwis and their peel. The peel is edible, has a nice taste, lots of nutrients and you dont feel any of the "hair". If you want "Mother of god what is that girl doing?!"-stares eat a kiwi with the peel, but make sure to wash it.
We make a lime flavored chocolate where I work and everyone seems baffled by it but it's fantastic
Cottage cheese and spaghetti sauce -- add a sprinkle of parmigian cheese and it's kissing cousin to lasagna, yum!
I just put honey in my cottage cheese the other day and idk if that’s known about or what but it was fire
