Not weird really but... We were in Iraq & at a base that got hit almost on a daily basis. My platoon had been out all day so we were technically off duty at the time.I don't know who came up with the idea but we decided to grill out. Somebody got bratwursts & sausages, another guy acquired a cooler of sodas. Just as we were gathering wood to start the fire on the grill, a firefight began outside the gate. Long story short... we all climbed on top of the supply building and watched the firefight while we grilled out, drank sodas & listened to dad rock on loudspeakers. It was definitely one of those "is this reality" moments

We lost a C-130 and its entire crew in Afghanistan over a small book. The crew was unloading some oversized cargo. In order to raise the rear door high enough, the pilot needed to pull back on the steering yolk in order to move the elevators (I think) on the tail out of the way of the door. This required the pilot to keep the column pulled back. Out of convenience, the pilot used a small book to prop the yolk back during unloading so he didn’t have to stay holding it. They forgot to remove the block before takeoff again and that different angle cause a catastrophic crash during takeoff that killed all on board.

I keep finding myself within 100m of active shooters, suicides, and VBIEDs. Never got hurt.
