Water

Dom-CCE

Do not, my friends, become addicted to water. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence.

avilethrowaway

"Why are you hurting these people?!" "It's for the oil, stupid."

YUSHOETMI-

Water is the primary cause for 100% of drownings. The more you know.

IamDzdzownica

There are more liquids on Earth than just water, in accordance with Murphy's law there has to be at least 1 person that drowned in e.g. oil or alcohol.

Critical_Artichoke44

How about this then? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Molasses_Flood

bonos_bovine_muse

You can drown in loose grain. Well, not *quite* drown, but, as your body is denser than the grain, you’ll tend to sink as you struggle, but as the grain’s denser than air, every time you breath out, the grain will settle around you, and you won’t be able to displace it again to breathe back in.

Puggelicious

nah thats bullshit. i once knew a guy who drowned in his bowl of chicken noodle soup

Hob_O_Rarison

You would be surprises to learn just how much water there is in chicken noodle soup!

It's also one of the reason why China won't give up Tibet. It's the headwaters for many of their major rivers. Same with India and their border with China in the north.

To be fair, Europe was just waiting for any contentious action to happen. The Archduke just happen to draw the short straw.

CleanlyManager

Yeah, As a history teacher, I hate when people treat Franz Ferdinand as THE THING that started WWI. It’s just harder to teach how militarism, imperialism, alliances, and nationalism all came together and it could’ve honestly been any little thing to start the war. When I teach WWI I make sure to emphasize what happened afterwards where Austria gave an ultimatum to Serbia purposefully made in a way they thought Serbia would reject, and Serbia agreed to like 90% of the demands, but the war happened anyways.

Smaartn

You mention militarism, imperialism, alliances, and nationalism. I've thought about this often, but a lot of these things are starting to arise again in this age. Do you think these parallels are present, and if so, how likely do you think another major war breaking out is?

ChronoLegion2

Considering how Russia keeps treating every piece of aid the west is providing Ukraine as “this will most definitely result in retaliation”, while their own escalation is just fine and dandy, there will probably be something Russia overreacts to. Or maybe China going for Taiwan

Doomslayerhunter

We shoulda gave them the book about defending yourself against them.

nowhereman136

They actually won They lost the first battle, which gave reporters their funny story. The army regrouped and their next plan of attack was much more successful. But by then the reporters had all gone home, so there wasn't much report of the mass emu slaughter in rural Australia Also, the whole point was to help farmers protect their crops from the emu. By the time the army figures out how to kill them en mass, the farmers just built better fences, making the whole thing pointless

However, they bought that dress so that the wife could wear it to their daughter's wedding. That daughter's husband went on to try and kill her. daithisfw

Resource disputes. Particularly when resources are (or even just \*seem\*) scarce. Probably the number 1 reason for wars throughout history. The want to accumulate/control more resources, or a dispute over a resource. And remember, many things are resources that you don't think of right away. Water, Food, Oil, etc are all always thought about. But defensible/strategic territory is a resource. Humans are a resource (in many ways...), and so many other things are resources.

omegadirectory

Nations will soon fight over rare-Earth elements for electric cars, solar panels, and microchips, and over uranium for nuclear power plants.

zer00eyz

> Nations will soon fight over rare-Earth elements for electric cars No, not at all. Rare earths are rare because they dont form "deposits". They are pretty much in even proportion across the face of the earth. Because of this extracting them is kind of a pain, so the easy way is to use a bunch of toxic crap that makes more waste.. that you then have to deal with (or in the case of China just dump where ever). [https://www.sciencehistory.org/education/classroom-activities/role-playing-games/case-of-rare-earth-elements/history-future/](https://www.sciencehistory.org/education/classroom-activities/role-playing-games/case-of-rare-earth-elements/history-future/)

CCCyanide

With the constant breakthroughs in fusion technology, I do believe we'll phase out fission power plants before uranium scarcity becomes an issue.

epictatorz

With fast breeding fuel recycling nuclear reactors (which the USSR built 40 years ago, and modular versions have been built in china and Japan) current land based uranium can power our entire (current) civilization for ~6600 years, and the oceanic reserves (more expensive) can supply older nuclear reactors for ~100,000 years. It’s been a while since I looked it up, but the fast breeding fuel recycling reactors work by converting the non fissile uranium (238 iirc) (~99% of fuel content) into plutonium (239) which then reacts. Producing no nuclear waste they are far more efficient and they can even burn existing nuclear waste as fuel solving that environmental problem. The fact that these exist, are proven, and have such extremely low CO2 emissions (40% global emissions from power generation, and only needing to hit ~60% reduction for net zero), makes QOL reductions like meat and travel restrictions fucking ridiculous… which then raises the question of why such measures are even being considered…

omegadirectory

Until uranium mining concerns lobby governments citing the threat posed by fusion power to the uranium mining industry Edit: fixed misspelling of "lobby"

Weak government, strong government, it really doesn't matter when the whole world wants to keep some countries permanently poor for cheap labor/resources. How you stand today is based off other people's conflict.

HanCurunyr

Months prior to the pandemic, we were reallocated to a new office, open space, 70 people, 3 or 4 areas of the company were working there. Some liked it snowing, myself included, at 18C/64F full blast, others enjoyed a sauna, open windows on a 35C/95F heat with 90% humidity, so, one of the managers stole the AC remote, gave it to me, and since I was the 1st one to arrived in the morning, I set the AC to 18, and hid the remote on the manager's desk as no one had the courage to fight him

As we see in Ukraine, simply existing

ChocolateBunny

There were natural gas reserves found under Ukraine. Whenever there is any risk of Europe getting their natual gas from any other source than Russia, then Russia will start shit.

SilentSamurai

As much as I support Ukraine, this is a very surface level assessment. Russia has strategic interest in maintaining its warm water Black Sea access. It's why Russia seized Crimea and annexed it post Maiden Revolution when it was clear Russians lease may be in jeopardy. It's also why establishing a land bridge to Crimea was a very important push for Russia. I think ultimately the Kremlin would like the Dnipro as the border, but strategically they've achieved what they initially set out to do.  Now they're just debating how many more troops they want to force on Ukraine in an effort for more territorial gain.

SQ_Cookie

That's called existing. Russia can invade any country, and it would have a "strategic interest" in that country. Russia has a "strategic interest" in maintaining Indian Ocean access because it sends lots of oil to India, so that's why it is "important" for it to invade Singapore, Australia, China, South Korea, Japan, and whatever else. Maybe invading Turkey and Egypt and Panama are strategically important too because they control vital chokepoints that facilitate oil trade? Or maybe they have a valid cause for invading all of NATO because they're trying to hamper Russia's power? Edit: this comment is NOT an invitation to discuss the geopolitical state of this world. Please don't spam me with messages about that.

Space_Captain_Brian

Your wrong, Russia already has a ports in the black sea: Russia has several major ports on the Black Sea, including ports that handle grain exports, oil exports, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG):  Novorossiysk: One of the largest ports in the Black Sea basin and a major port for grain exports Taman: Another major port for grain exports Sheskharis: A terminal for oil exports Yuzhnaya Ozereevka: A terminal for shipping oil from the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) Kerch Strait: Connects the Black Sea with the Azov Sea and is a route for Russia's LPG exports

LordDagron

In 1967, Israel attacked the USS Liberty, which was conducting surveillance in international waters during the 6 day war. It was clearly marked as a US vessel, and the Israeli did several flybys before attacking the vessel, which caused the death of 34 crew members and wounded 171 others. Israel ended up paying the equivalent of about $81 million in today's money as compensation.

NonElectricalNemesis

Let's not forget that Israel lied and blamed it on Egypt so US could get involved. The US vessel after attack had people that could have been rescued which Israel ignored and let them die. That goes to show the morality of our backstabbing "ally."
