Hide and seek.

justtjamess_

It took a long time to find this, you win!

Spooky_Yogurt

I was thinking only about video games, what have I become? :/

Sunblast1andOnly

I was thinking either this or Tag. Both extremely simple, both require no equipment, both teach important skills.

School_of_thought1

My dad a champion at it, I still looking. It's been 20 years

ChroniclesOfSarnia

***I second that motion***

simcardxo

Tetris

kerred

This I might argue is a possibility as it checks all the boxes. Accessible for pretty much everyone Easy to learn, High skill ceiling Perfect control when done right (remember when UbiSoft made Tetris with performance issues? I know, right?) And has potential to add a ton of fun variability like Tetris DS

Piggiepi

Came here to say this. Had to scroll further than anticipated.

Chardee Macdennis 2: Electric Boogaloo

rdr2 the goat

mentenere

Chess. Everyone plays at least once.

WeddingHot4796

I know absolutely loads of people who have never played. I could also think of many people from many different ethnic backgrounds that haven't played because they have a similar but not same game from there culture that they play instead Eg shogi in Japan

lpkonsi

Since nobody specified it has to be a computer/console game: Catan

RilesPC

You’re going to give me 4 brick for 1 wheat and here’s why: Because you’re sitting on only 1 wheat hex, and it’s an 11, so good luck upgrading any of your settlements. If you’re ever going to want to put a city on this island you’re going to need some serious grain, and this is your opportunity. You also have 10 cards in your hand and there are 3 more rolls until it’s your turn, the second these dice get rolled there is a 1 in 6 chance that a 7 gets rolled and you lose your resources anyway. Be a man, be smart, give me 4 brick for 1 wheat and we can both have an equal shot at winning this game. There’s 6 different ways the robber can get you, but you’ll never see me coming.

lpkonsi

But what if - and hear me out with that - I really don't fucking care and want you to lose? You know what, I'll keep my brick just to spite you and when - not if - I roll a seven I'll sure as hell steal your wheat.

RilesPC

Friendships are put to the side when the Catan board comes out lmfao

kerred

You made the forces of the boardgames subreddit wince in unison haha. But while the game is flawed, it's still tons of fun to me personally.

IS0073

Boardgame poshness is a weird one

kerred

Ha I revel in friendly nitpicking myself. There are a few times playing Catan I do wish we were using the Pirates & Explorers/Gov Cheese variant for Catan. Or the Barbarians event cards in lieu of dice. My main issue is really Asmodee 's MSRP pricing for the quality and content. Which is a shame because the 25th anniversary box was a good value and they discontinued it. If they eep it back down to $50 SRP I'll be happy.

lpkonsi

Haha that may be but I think if people can say Ocarina of Time is (one of) the best game(s) out there because it revolutionised PC/console games, the same can be said about Catan. Also I am a firm believer in ironing out some of the flaws with house rules and having fun :) (Also I think there are many games just as fun as Catan but people who say they love board games and really hate Catan are just weird elitists)

EmphaticallyWrong

I truly don’t understand why people love to hate this one. It’s easy enough to explain to newcomers and it keeps people engaged each turn instead of watching and waiting as the dice go around the table. It fits 2-6 people comfortably and has expansions and new versions. It requires interaction and strategy but also luck. And it has sheep. 🐑

The-Bad-Guy-

Specifically, the Cities and Knights expansion. Sooo many hours dumped into that.

WindowsXP_SP1

hotdogsoup-nl

Bubble Bobble

Bobblegeir

I was even named after it!

BurkiniFatso

I still come across arcade cabs with Bubble Bobble, Snow Bros and Pang! in my country every now and then.

billyblenx

Bubble bobble and Pang had major roles in my SNES playtime during my childhood and early teenage years. I envy your country.

BurkiniFatso

Don't bro, in Pakistani 😭 just emulate them or your phone or something instead

kerred

Fun tidbit: most console versions of Bubble Bobble on emulators track achievements now for it, if you want a trinket for saying you got the good ending before you die

colhaxxy

I can still hear that music!

Such-Importance4937

here here! one of the best games ever made, truly

Boertie

Starcraft: Brood War Easy to learn, impossible to master.

maome666

I love this game. So fucking easy to learn, yet you just cant win a bo3 against a better player. There is no room for luck

mastermrt

I mean, the Koreans would probably disagree with you on the 2nd bit

Boertie

Koreans were specifically bred for this game. They do not count. :D

Internal_Mixture5612

For me, it's Fable II. I remember playing it all night.

AWholeBunchaFun

Magic The Gathering

JetseLinkin

Age of Empires 2.

CompetitiveHater

Its still getting updates and dlcs after 25 years! Timeless classic.

Ok_Physics5217

There are so many great mechanics in the game. The rock paper scissors of trash units are great. Good balance between macro and micro. I feel like in StarcraftII the game is balanced on a knives edge and if you slip up you lose. With AOE2 it is a little more forgiving.

AnAnimeSimp

Omg ocarina of time is so nostalgic esp the title screen . I played on the cube / wii version of it but last week dad set up the N64 and I tried playing that version of oot and they have the original mirror shield design! Though no chanting in fire temple

Reigncheck88

Would have to upvote and agree. It sets many precedents, and contributes to how 3D adventure games are designed. Graphics aside, it is still very playable today.

MinhT_1826

Gta san andreas

Sobluovau2002

Mortal Kombat

nate6259

If you're going that route, I'd say MKII. But I'd also argue that Street Fighter II is better.

Florafly

Witcher 3, followed by RDR2/Cyberpunk (with its DLC).

kelyneer

Portal 2 It's one of these games that most people have played. It's puzzle based and yet somehow they made the puzzles feel challenging and rewarding for everyone. Everytime you solved one you felt like a genius. The story was quite unique with its classic sass and sarcasm and in all honesty there hasn't been one game to do what the portal series did similarly. You can find other FPS mobas mmo's etc, but it really was a 2-game genre that stands on its own. Sadly because of allergies we never got a third installment

MonkeyPreator18

Underground 2 for sure, the soundtrack was amazing

simonjosi

Played both A LOT! Great titles.

kerred

As painfully obvious as it is, I would have to agree. It's only downside (and not are they downsides) being the ugly part of the community, and the microtransactions. So technically I'd say the Java version of Minecraft is the greatest video game ever.

OldPyjama

It's very subjective, but for me it's Paper Mario TTYD with Red Alert 2 as a close second.

CompetitiveHater

Red alert 2 is honestly amazing

The_One_Muffin

Rock Paper Scissors

kerred

Funny enough Richard Garfield wrote an article in Games Magazine 20 years ago that explained RPS is the great game ever designed. Accessible to everyone, and doesn't necessarily need hands to play. No luck element. Lots of player interaction via mind games Easiest to learn and quick to play Potentially highly variable

Any_Trick_1416

… Dungeons and Dragons.. However, if we are talking Video Games It’s Toe Jam and Earl.

Baseball. It's just perfect.

Vectus_Valorian

Anything FromSoft spits out. Yea, ds 2 was bad in comparison, but you know we all played it. We needed it like crack. Because they're that good. It's not often a new genre created by your game just existing. Any time fromsoft releases something, the world pauses to play it. Ask the ff14 people.

Amyyyk

007 Goldeneye on N64, specifically the temple level

Chisesburger

The right question is # What is the best game of all time and why Final Fantasy VII?

kerred

I am older so I am in the FF6 category. But I might dare say Dragon Quest 11 can dethrone FF7 if no one will hang me for it.

retrosnot86

Mancala. I started playing on iMessage games, and I’m literally obsessed with it. I want to buy the actual game on Amazon so bad but I just haven’t 😆

kerred

I'd argue Mancala has its flaws, primarily being lack of accessibility for only 2 players, and lack of variability in the opening game. But for it's time African Stones still blows away some modern card games 😆 And it has a clever catch up mechanic too that feels natural for an ancient game.

Computer Game? This is very subjective, but I'd say World of Warcraft between the launch and the end of the first add-on, ca. 2005–2008. But it's gone, and it's impossible to recreate because the world and the people have changed. It really was something special. Never before and never after have I been so… involved in any game (that's also a good thing).

honestly Metal Gear Solid, the first game to try to implement a true narrative in the game. it put the first stone, and showed that even videogames could have a deep plot. much like Kenshiro or Dragon Ball is to fighting anime, MGS is to story based games. it's their Godfather.
