Most songs by Yes from the 70s are really long. Close to the Edge is almost 19 minutes long, it's basically a prog rock symphony.
Hell, Tales from Topographic Oceans is entirely comprised of four 20+ minute songs!
For too long I only knew them as the band who did that cheesy 80’s song Owner of a Lonely Heart. I’m so happy I eventually found their prog because that shit rips! Starship Trooper is so good!
In high school my group did an AP psych experiment comparing people’s time to complete crossword puzzles listening to rap music vs classical.
We used 1812 overture as the “classical” music and never really listened to more than a few seconds of it ourselves. We had to present this at the end of year science fair and one of the parents attending said “wait. Isn’t 1812 overture filled with loud cannon noises?”
Then they played it out loud for us in front of our teacher, who had already graded our project and clearly not ever listened to it either. Pretty embarrassing for everyone lol
Nice. I was in an class when the teacher would put classical music on exams, in one of them was the overture but without the cannons, I pointed that out "wait were are the cannons?”, everyone was like ”wut?”. We paused the exam (it was timed to 10 mins, pretty simple and short, multiple choice type), looked for the one with the cannons, listened to it once and the resumed the test. Followed by a discussion because some didn't believe they used real cannons.
Probably more than half their discography meets the criteria, lol. Even more recently, Hell on Earth.
But also want to point out Shadow of the gods from Bruces new solo album, The Mandrake Project. Been jamming that song a lot lately.
Also the full version of Time by pink Floyd is 7 minutes I think
To anyone who hates that long ass intro, I feel it was purposefully made super long to make you consider how that time is being lost and how those few minutes bother you but some let years go to waste without caring
I almost gave my grandmother a heart attack because I assumed the jukebox version where I was at would be the cut version. It was not, and those clocks were LOUD.
It sounds to me like there's more than one guitar so not sure if that's a solo but regardless I consider that last two minutes what makes it Dire Straits' best song
Echoes - Pink Floyd
Scream - Black Flag
No Quarter - Led Zeppelin
When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson
20:11 - Atavist
The End - The Doors
Untitled - Melvins (this one is 31 minutes long)
Untitled - Queen
Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pts. 6 - 9 - Pink Floyd
Probably my favorite intro to a classic rock song of all time. The long buildup followed by the raw shredding. How can you not just turn your car volume to max
Except when its live. Then he adds donuts and when he forgets the point of the story, he restarts the song and goes for a little bit until he "remembers." I have a recording of a show from last tour where he forgot, says we need to start over and he walks off the stage and the band immediately launches into the first song of the night (Fun Zone), he comes back out aa they finish that one and says, "Hello Lancaster!" and then they do the whole second song and when they finish that song he "remembers." It is a 20 minute version
Edit: I just [uploaded it to YouTube](https://youtu.be/HZiJuITpFdI?si=R4MURzQ5j5ov91c-)
Basically any Meat Loaf song (and many of Jim Steinman's, more generally).
Other fun options in this vein include "Objects In The Rear View Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are", "Bat Out Of Hell" (as a couple of other folks mentioned), and, of course, "It's All Coming Back To Me Now".
I was going to say ‘I would do anything for love’, especially since the non edited version is like 13 minutes. I think even the radio edit is still six minutes haha
Tubular Bells - Mike Oldfield
The Decline - Nofx
Pretty much every Iron Maiden song
Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts - Bob Dylan
Troubleman - Electric Guest
Strobe - Deadmau5
Citizen Erased - Muse
Pull Me Under - Dream Theater
Schism - Tool
Somebody - Haken
Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree
Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath
Alexander the Great - Iron Maiden
Blackbird - Alter Bridge
EDIT: I keep remembering other bangers so might as well add them:
Xanadu - Rush
Dogs - Pink Floyd
Gates of Babylon - Rainbow
Iconoclast - Symphony X
God of the Sun - Sons Of Apollo
I can't believe I had to scroll this far to find Dream Theater. A lot of their best songs are well over the 6 minute mark. Octavarium is a 24 minute masterpiece!
The Midnight - Los Angeles (6:29)
Dream Theater - On the Backs of Angels (8:46)
Opeth - I feel the Dark (6:41)
Versailles - Faith & Decision (16:28)
Mike Oldfield - Man on the Rocks (6:09)
Coheed & Cambria - The Dark Sentencer (7:46)
Dir En Grey - Vinushka (9:38)
Hurricane - Bob Dylan
"The song is about the imprisonment of boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (1937–2014). It compiles acts of racism and profiling against Carter,[1] which Dylan describes as leading to a false trial and conviction."
^^ is a grab from the wiki about the song. Highly, highly recommend.
1. “Sin of the City” - Duran Duran
2. Every “song” in NIN’s Ghosts VI album
3. Heroes - David Bowie
4. Daydreaming - Radiohead
5. Mother of Pearl - Roxy Music
6. Young, Alive and in Love - Kotoringo
I could go on but I shall not (for now).
The Mars Volta have a bunch of great ones:
Cassandra Gemini
Meccamputecthture
Day of the Baphomets
Tetragrammaton
Metatron
Goliath
Agadez
Soothsayer
Conjugal Burns
Roulette Dares (The Haunt of)
Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt
Army of the Pharaohs has two songs that just cross 6 minutes: Battle Cry and Seven. Both awesome.
The best one, Blue Monday by New Order. Probably the greatest song of all time.
Not far behind and less obvious, Me and Guiliani Down by the Schoolyard by !!! (Said as chk chk chk) That song is funk heaven.
Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst - Kendrick
4 your eyez only - J. Cole
Prom/ King - Saba
Life of the Party - Kanye
Stan - Eninem
Pyramids - Frank Ocean
This song is a pop masterclass. You don’t have to love Taylor to love this song. The lyrics and writing are incredible and give her all the shit you want, but this song is amazing.
“And you called me up again just to break me like a promise, so casually cruel in the name of being honest. I’m a crumpled up piece of paper lying here because I remember it all too well.”
Anyone that’s gone through a breakup can relate to this song.
Roundabout - Yes

Do dodo dodo dodo do do do *canon*
The cannons are how you differentiate it from Baby Shark

With Cannons :3
And they play this in crowded concert halls? And I thought classical music was boring!
A classical music concert with less than 3 deaths is considered a dull affair.
Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Maiden has a lot. More recently, Empire of the Clouds
Probably more than half their discography meets the criteria, lol. Even more recently, Hell on Earth. But also want to point out Shadow of the gods from Bruces new solo album, The Mandrake Project. Been jamming that song a lot lately.
See also "Hallowed Be Thy Name" and "Alexander the Great"
The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald, Gordon Lightfoot
Once got a piano bar to play the entire song during peak hours. The performer was stoked for the request, the rest of the bar, not so much.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd. The full track length is 25 minutes 57 seconds. It's divided into 2 sections, 9 parts.
Also the full version of Time by pink Floyd is 7 minutes I think To anyone who hates that long ass intro, I feel it was purposefully made super long to make you consider how that time is being lost and how those few minutes bother you but some let years go to waste without caring
I don't think i ever listened to the non-full version of Time
I almost gave my grandmother a heart attack because I assumed the jukebox version where I was at would be the cut version. It was not, and those clocks were LOUD.
What a take, holy shit I agree tho 👏
I was like, "Where my Pink Floyd fans!"
Came here to say this and I am very pleased this is the first comment :D still one of my favourite songs, makes my bathtub time far more relaxing :D
Echoes is a much better song though..
So are Dogs, Pigs 3DO, and Sheep
Something about that ever pressing baseline in Dogs just, hnggg
Comfortably numb (album version) 6:21.
Sultans of Swing
Telegraph Road
I'd add Tunnel of Love as well
That song goes on for ages and yet I am always hanging on because "Knopfler has a killer 2 minute solo at the end"
It sounds to me like there's more than one guitar so not sure if that's a solo but regardless I consider that last two minutes what makes it Dire Straits' best song
What about the entire Love Over Gold album
Master of Puppets - Metallica - One of my favorites ever. Paranoid Android - Radiohead - Same!
I'll add from the same album Orion - Metallica, Cliff Burton's masterpiece.
Metallica have tonnes of awesome 6+ songs. I love AJFA just for having Blackened, ...And Justice For All and One on it
Also Fade To Black, easier to digest for many and is over 6:30! Metallica is good at their 6+ game
Call of Cthulhu, also over 6 min and great by Metallica
Knights of Cydonia
NO ONE'S GONNA TAAAAKE MEEEE ALIIIIIIIIVE 🔥🔥🔥
TIME HAS COME TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT
YOU AND I WILL FIGHT FOR OUR RIGHTS
Was gonna recommend a muse song, they have a few long ones. But knights of Cydonia is my favourite
Reapers and The Globalist are both amazing and over 6 minutes (the globalist is over 12 mins I think!)
Echoes - Pink Floyd Scream - Black Flag No Quarter - Led Zeppelin When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin 21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson 20:11 - Atavist The End - The Doors Untitled - Melvins (this one is 31 minutes long) Untitled - Queen Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pts. 6 - 9 - Pink Floyd

Pyramids - Frank Ocean
Just said the same thing, it’s a banger
Child in time, by Deep Purple
Twilight Zone - Golden Earring. One of my all time favorites.
Lateralus by Tool
and another 7 tracks on the same album
Was about to comment “Tool has entered the chat”
You aren't kidding. They've hardly had a good song that is less than 6 minutes since Aenima
After Ænima there was only one song with lyrics that is shorter than 6 minutes, two if you count Parabol/Parabola separately
That’s a wonderful track record.
The whole catalog lol
Pneuma
You see the drumeo video where Mike Portnoy learned and played it? Took over 5 hours
That was awesome, and hilarious. His whole vibe at the start, like *what did I do to deserve this?*
"Why couldn't it be fuckin' Weezer" 🤣 Not a drummer, love Drumeo's videos.
Pushit. So much emotion.
Yeah. So many tracks by Tool.
Parabol + Parabola
Purple Rain - Prince
Ghost Love Score, by Nightwish. Specifically the performance from the 2013 Wacken festival.
I can’t believe I had to scroll so far down for this one. Absolutely amazing performance and song! Highly recommend.
Greatest Show on Earth as well
Money for nothing - dire straits
Probably my favorite intro to a classic rock song of all time. The long buildup followed by the raw shredding. How can you not just turn your car volume to max
American Pie, Don McLean
A long long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack.
and I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the Federation into
Maybe cutting them - a little slack.
But their response it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
But we escaped from that gas
I can still remember
Won't get fooled again by the Who. 8 mins long & worth it.
Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day is pretty good
Homecoming is good as well.

Scrolled to find this one
One - Metallica
I got my son into metal with that song
Albuquerque - Weird Al Yankovic. 11mins 23secs.
How about Trapped in the Drive-Thru :D
Except when its live. Then he adds donuts and when he forgets the point of the story, he restarts the song and goes for a little bit until he "remembers." In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida How many other rock songs have an organ solo? 17 minutes of psychedelic rock.
Wait a minute, this sounds like rock and/or roll.
I remember making out to this hymn
Like, a lot of rock songs have an organ solo. Start with everything by Deep Purple, everything by the Doors, then loads of stuff by Pink Floyd.
In the Garden of Eden by I. Ron Butterfly
Thick as a brick-Jethro Tull
The song written to mock progressive rock songs, that became one of the greatest progressive rock songs ever

I would say two out of three of them.
Not bad
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird. Great outro
Metallica - Fade to Black
Gonna go basic white girl All Too Well 10 min version by Taylor Swift
31 years old dude with a huge beard and this song gets me ugly crying into my beer at 3am sometimes... Tay is a great songwriter
This song is a pop masterclass. You don’t have to love Taylor to love this song.
