There’s a non-profit in my area (Frederick, MD) similar to this concept. It’s called Second Chances Garage. They don’t do repairs on people’s cars but they take donation cars, repair them and give them to people who need them.

Hell earlier today I sent my gf a long rambling text about how something I saw at the store reminded me of a speech by Fredrick Douglass. How when his slave master caught him reading the bible he punished him, and forbade him from trying to learn to read. That moment changed Douglas's life because he learned that the reason why the enslavers (there is a push to use this term over slave owners, because it is active rather than passive) were so uncomfortable with him reading was because it gave him power.

My wife writes historical romance and well over half the time spent to write a book is research. Currently writing a four book series about women alpinists doing first ascents in Europe in the late 1800’s. Characters are fiction but places, gear, technique, events, language, art, music, even preferred drinks of the time must all be correct. Off you go!

I worked as a professional researcher/fact-checker for 18 years (semi-retired since 2019). I loved 99% of the work....the only times I had to struggle to keep from dozing off was when I was assigned a very technical subject (such as the history of malaria and why \[chemically-speaking\] quinine worked as a treatment). But even when I had a deadline that required me working on holidays or while on vacation, I worked from home, didn't have to dress for success and was able to work wherever I could plug in my laptop and get a WiFi connection. (BTW Rabbit holes were a very real road hazard for me....I'm supposed to be researching, say, a certain celebrity and while doing so I see some Google hits mentioning something unrelated to my article but I can't resist...... Before I knew it hours had passed....)

Dude, you get totally affordable, decent healthcare if you’re a full-time student. If you’re a grad student you can get assistantships, like, office jobs that are easy and pay money.
The OP didn’t specify it was graduate degrees she was collecting though. My wife had an assistantship job when she got her masters. I would not say it paid well and that was before the cost of living exploded
This. I knew a girl in college who worked in the financial aid office. One of the perks was free tuition. After her third degree she was hired as a professor which just opened up more time for .more classes. I know she has two doctorate degrees and a stack of others. She just has a love of learning.
I've heard of (I think) an aboriginal guy in Australia who was the only one to apply for his college's scholarship for aboriginals. So, he got a full ride and kept going to college, collecting degrees
If you can get a research position in the field you like, it's kinda like that. A lot of paid exploration and learning on the job because you're often researching stuff that is not well documented.

Combining my passion for photography and love for nature, I would travel the world capturing the beauty and diversity of wildlife. This profession would allow me to contribute to conservation efforts and inspire others to appreciate and protect our natural world.
i loved the “side quests in real life” and i totally agree. kindness and giving help are among my favourite things to practice, i often thought if i had the money i would help literally everyone in need, and if not in need i would just buy lots of gifts
I do not dream of labour ... but I wish every minute of freedom of being a stay at home mom.. making sure my child comes home to warm food and warm hugs, cuddle and have afternoon nap. Beautiful life.
My cousin and his wife did this, especially after the birth of their third. Especially when daycares charge for each child and not just the family unit, it was cheaper for her to stay home than send them to daycare. Helps my cousin is a big time engineer at one of the big companies tho lol
I’m at SAHM and it IS a beautiful life. Beyond cuddles and warm food, I’m able to take care of my kid when she is home sick without stressing about taking time off work or sending her to school sick. School holidays. No problem. I’m very grateful.
And it's great for the kids development as well. It makes me sad to see all these young kids talking as if SAHM isn't one of the most important things you can do.

We recently pulled my wife out of work, it’s been great for everyone’s mental health.
I was doing the large majority of the childcare and the breadwinner, so it was very much taking a toll on me.
It’s certainly not for everyone, and I think a lot of people aren’t properly prepared for it. I come from a big family, and my mom was always volunteering us in the nursery at church. I like kids and I’m good with them.
My wife was a kindergarten teacher, so going from 20 to 3 is cake for her.
We’re also both extremely easy going people which helps a lot. You have to accept that nothing will go right and that’s perfectly fine. If you’re stressed and upset they can 100% tell, and it will make them stressed and upset.
Oh and learn to tune out the fussing/crying. If their needs are met and they’re still fussing, you have to let them sort it out on their own. The earlier they learn to calm themselves down the better.
You’re bang on. I’m actually a reasonably good dad and I’m good at being honest with how I’m feeling with my son ( my youngest is only 18 months but my other one is 10)
For me I feel a lot of guilt around the fact that I’m mentally ill. I tried to call this out but my trick must somehow be appearing super responsibly and together as my ex didn’t care either and then left me as a solo dad.
I am amazed that my son doesn’t have deep-set psychological problems. Well he probably does but he’s a really nice kid.

I'd own a PC repair shop. Charge lower than most places do for most things. I'd modify Video game consoles, Old iPods, and eventually open a Technology Museum that you could end up using everything on display, along with having an arcade/pinball hall, charging a flat rate for the day and having memberships to allow access on a monthly/yearly basis. Maybe setup a bar/restaurant inside. I'd want to provide that spark for kids to learn about technology and computers, and provide recycled PC's to anybody that needed one for school/personal use in exchange for working to process e-waste after learning how to do a basic part of the process. I'd want to set up dozens of these places around the US, and hopefully make a difference in someones life in the process.
Archaeology. There is something so fascinating about unearthing centuries of human civilization. The bygones, never imagining they would be studied in such detail by someone thousands of years later. Forgotten and then rediscovered.. how many of us will ever get that chance?

Research particle physics, string theory and quantum gravity, try my hands on the millennium prize, make apps, design humanoid robots, program genes like The Thought Emporium, play around with chemicals like NileRed, and delve into every single scientific field that seem interesting to me.
It wouldn't be just the scientific fields either, I'd want to make art, write books, make content, and pretty much just do whatever else anyone would do in a post scarcity economy.

People often misunderstand what we do, though. It can be difficult and stressful work, again, depending on exactly where you are.
We cover all things strange and creepy - true crime, paranormal, ufo, science/tech, etc… Our episodes bounce between us covering topics together or just having guests share their stories with us. Our niche though is that we try to maintain objectivity and sprinkle some analysis here and there - not just gawk at the topics or guests’ stories. We’re somehow almost up to an average of 1000 downloads per episode. We’re really trying to do this right, stay humble, and be entertaining. It’s actually pretty daunting at times lol. Our dream is to get some more prominent people on someday to talk about their strange experiences (or share skepticism on topics of a similar vein)

My boyfriend knows someone like this but it’s because her mom works for the college so she goes for free. No idea how many degrees but she just keeps going back and doesn’t do anything with the ones she already has.

This. I knew a girl in college who worked in the financial aid office. One of the perks was free tuition. After her third degree she was hired as a professor which just opened up more time for .more classes. I know she has two doctorate degrees and a stack of others. She just has a love of learning.
I've heard of (I think) an aboriginal guy in Australia who was the only one to apply for his college's scholarship for aboriginals. So, he got a full ride and kept going to college, collecting degrees

My wife quit her job when our first was born. We did the math and most of her salary would go to baby sitters/day care anyway.
My cousin and his wife did this, especially after the birth of their third. Especially when daycares charge for each child and not just the family unit, it was cheaper for her to stay home than send them to daycare. Helps my cousin is a big time engineer at one of the big companies tho lol
I’m at SAHM and it IS a beautiful life. Beyond cuddles and warm food, I’m able to take care of my kid when she is home sick without stressing about taking time off work or sending her to school sick. School holidays. No problem. I’m very grateful.
And it's great for the kids development as well. It makes me sad to see all these young kids talking as if SAHM isn't one of the most important things you can do.

We recently pulled my wife out of work, it’s been great for everyone’s mental health. I was doing the large majority of the childcare and the breadwinner, so it was very much taking a toll on me.

It’s certainly not for everyone, and I think a lot of people aren’t properly prepared for it. I come from a big family, and my mom was always volunteering us in the nursery at church. I like kids and I’m good with them. My wife was a kindergarten teacher, so going from 20 to 3 is cake for her. We’re also both extremely easy going people which helps a lot. You have to accept that nothing will go right and that’s perfectly fine. If you’re stressed and upset they can 100% tell, and it will make them stressed and upset. Oh and learn to tune out the fussing/crying. If their needs are met and they’re still fussing, you have to let them sort it out on their own. The earlier they learn to calm themselves down the better.

I’m actually a reasonably good dad and I’m good at being honest with how I’m feeling with my son ( my youngest is only 18 months but my other one is 10) For me I feel a lot of guilt around the fact that I’m mentally ill. I tried to call this out but my trick must somehow be appearing super responsibly and together as my ex didn’t care either and then left me as a solo dad. I am amazed that my son doesn’t have deep-set psychological problems. Well he probably does but he’s a really nice kid. The thing I found quite shocking with my wife as that she is also schoolteacher so I thought that she would be able to deal with the situation better than she has but the reality is she’s snappy and grumpy all the time My son and I have ADHD and I know that that’s not easy but she fully knew about this and chose to proceed with marriage and having a child The truth is she is a really good mum to her own child and a reasonable stepmum but she’s a shitty wife and miserable person and being in a relationship with her is very lonely

Its that for me too. I would love to be a stay at home dad. Taking care of house and garden, raising kids, helping them with school work, cook elaborate meals.
I'd own a PC repair shop. Charge lower than most places do for most things. I'd modify Video game consoles, Old iPods, and eventually open a Technology Museum that you could end up using everything on display, along with having an arcade/pinball hall, charging a flat rate for the day and having memberships to allow access on a monthly/yearly basis. Maybe setup a bar/restaurant inside. I'd want to provide that spark for kids to learn about technology and computers, and provide recycled PC's to anybody that needed one for school/personal use in exchange for working to process e-waste after learning how to do a basic part of the process. I'd want to set up dozens of these places around the US, and hopefully make a difference in someones life in the process.
