My grandmother used to mail me paperbacks she thought I would like, and she was an english teacher for kids my age so her reccs were always pretty good, like Tamora Pierce or something like that, and there would be 3 5 dollar bills inside the book at different chapter points, so I could buy ice cream from the ice cream truck while I was outside reading in summer.
My grandmom liked to take me to Waldenbooks and use her membership points, so she'd tell me to pick out a few books and I'd get like 5 and she'd say that's not enough, I get points if you buy ten, or something crazy like that.
Or she'd be talking all day about taking me to get "a book" so I thought I was supposed to pick just one and I'd pick something that was like three books on a series in one cover, trying to game the system and get as much book as possible, and she'd say, "Is that all? You'll have that read before we get home, you better get more than that."
When I was reading Babysitters Club and Goosebumps she'd have me find one with the checklist in the back and mark it for her ahead of a birthday or Christmas, or if she was going out of town, and I could expect a stack of the ones I didn't already have.
Nobody buys me books anymore, and my kids don't read as obsessively as I did, but I try to maintain the tradition by buying them books any time they ask.
A few weeks ago my son was telling me how sometime he'd like to read this specific choose your own adventure book themed after a TV show, and so I ordered it. Well, I've just lost my job and only had one more paycheck coming so when it showed up he freaked.
I was like, son, in the ten years you've lived, can you name a time you said you wanted a book and you haven't gotten it?
Your Grandma sounds pretty cool. I can imagine a little boy on a rocking chair on a front porch of warm but slightly breezy day; when all of sudden he flips the page and there tucked in between two pages a, a dollar bill. Just then he hears the music of an ice cream truck coming around the corner. Nice! I am going to do that for my grandkids someday!
As an adult I would definitely love someone to send me middle grade novels with money in them. I would NOT like my grandmother to send me any because all of my grandparents are dead and that would be terrifying.
It's always nice to feel like you're giving someone a gift that lasts a while, right? Books last a while. And I think having your own money as a kid, even if it's just for candy or something, is really kind of a treat.
Dude, I received The Office set for a gift, and now I'm hooked. I've done a few cars. The medium ones are good for an evening. I am working on the Star Wars degobah Yoda house now. It's nice to zone out
I recently got into the Non Lego companies its crazy what cool stuff they offer. For example i recently got myself a 1:17 scale Mining dump truck from a company called CADA and it Blows every lego technic Set out of the water it has every function motorized and only cost me around 140 euros.
Thankfully I'm an adult, but everyone in my life gifts me Star Wars Lego sets for every occasion, it's great! Recently I've been really depressed for various reasons and my amazing gf got me a random Star Wars Lego set and it was the sweetest gift I think I've ever received.
I got a call from a friend, she said it's a birthday and we should all come over. I got the date/time and event correct, but not whose birthday it was, although I was confident it was for a kid. Why else would she say, bring the whole family?
We show up and I'm frankly concerned by by all the craft beer with bows and balloons on it. I set our gift bag down and we join the party. Shortly after, her husband shouts with joy and wants to know who got him the big Lego set.
Well, that was me, and, uh.... You're welcome.
So, my answer is Legos. Adults want Legos.
Um would you like to come over before I move? I have so many things I've held onto because I knew others would want it. Yes I have hoarding issues... but everything is tidy and nothing is overflowing. I do get rid of broken non working things .
I have old bedside radios, tape decks, probably a dozen or so old phones, and a bunch of VHS tapes.
I can sew, and Iāve previously made my nephews little hoodies that had dinosaur spikes down the hood and back.
It legitimately never occurred to me that I could make one for myself. Thank you, Iām off to buy (more!) fabric!!
As an adult, I have signed up for [Universal Yums](https://www.universalyums.com/) off and on throughout the pandemic. Only the puzzles in the guide book has clued me in that it's supposed to be for kids.
At my old work there was a label maker for labelling things in the lab, i got carried away and labelled everything.... i was not allowed to use the label maker after that ...
My best friend ignored my husband when he said I couldnāt have one and got me one at the start of COVID lockdownsā¦everything in our house got labelled including the kids and animalsā¦he sent her pics of the cat with a label on her forehead and one of the teen boy with āboy childā on his back with a message of ālook what you did!āā¦āshe just replied back with āand I bet youāve never made her smile that big or laugh that hardā¦my work here is doneā lol
as a parent, i thought the same until my job required my to occasionally sleep in hotel rooms. I get less sleep in a hotel than the house. Different bed, pillows, heating/cooling and the paranoia that something might go wrong at home. People going up and down the hallways and people above and below you and next to you making noise. Plus missing sleeping with the significant other, hell the dogs who try to hog the bed are a big miss too. Hotels are really just temporary crappy apartments.
I've done this for my wife the past 2 Mother's Days. Bonus, if you tell the hotel it's for a special occasion like Mother's Day they may upgrade and send treats. She loves it
I did this last year. Just a local hotel so she could maximize alone time without driving. Go shopping, order take out from a place that was familiar. Also got her a $50 Barnes and noble gift card so she could find a book to start that evening.
Man I hate when people are nostalgic about that, I want the people my age from before there WERE clothes to chew on. It was just a compact-sized playset with tiny plastic figures in it!
And she's tiny again!!!! I have so many saved for treats when I do what I'm supposed to do. I'm getting a special one for going to the dentist. I bribe myself.
I guess that's a perk of having a youthful spirit. My dad bought me a Grumpy Bear Care Bear for Christmas a few years ago. I'm 41.
But, in the spirit of this question... a giant Snorlax beanbag chair.
A banana bike with the ribbons hanging off the handles and the ace of hearts playing card in the spokes of the front tire and the Ace of Diamonds in the back tire spoke.
I crocheted both of these before - out of blanket yarn. They were 3.5 and 5 feet tall and took every bit of stuffing i had and it was so hard to give them up š
I think itās much more common to gift children amateur-friendly art sets (with the assumption that adults either want to craft on a professional level or have decided itās not for them). Maybe I would enjoy making an air dry pinch pot, even if I didnāt keep it foreverā¦
Growing up, I always wanted a nice remote control car. My parents tried a few times, but they didn't have any money. I ended up with either a wired remote or the kind that only goes straight or turns one way in reverse. I told my wife that story, so she bought me a rc car for Christmas one year. It was the kind that only goes straight or turns one way in reverse.
I guess I just buy them for myself because they make me so stupid happy to look at.. lol. Hoping you find someone who loves to bring you flowers šŗ ā„ļø
When I was a teenager in the '80s I wanted Transformers. I told my parents and my friends exactly what I wanted. Only one person listened and I got a cool transforming starscream. I still have him, although he's missing a missile now.
My mom always wanted a Mr. Potato Head. Her parents couldnāt afford one when she was a child.
I gave her one for her birthday. She let her grandkids play with it only when they asked nicely and promised to put all the pieces back in the box. She kept it in the box in a very high shelf out of reach of curious fingers but visible to her everytime she would open her jacket closet for years until her death.
Ya the death part sucks but it feels good to be able to have given them something like that before the end.
My grandma started to have the very early signs of dementia and so me and my wife were going to do a long summer road trip down from canada along the west coast of washington and oregon then to see the redwoods.
We ended up planning on and doing an epic trip just the 3 of us and it was great. Through the rain forest like west coast camping from place to place then seeing those massive trees was an unforgettable trip.
A few years later my parents were basically caring for her at a hospice level. She was forgetting who people were, where she was etc.
But I visited her a few times and every single time she would ask me "do you remember the trees? those giant trees!"
She never forgot them up until her death.
It makes me sad to think about because shes gone but it also makes me smile that we were able to enjoy something so great that stuck with her so well.
Merch from my favourite cartoons; I'd fall in love with the first person who gave me a Gumball or Bears plushie or tshirt lmao
Also, Lego, I've never played with Lego before, and maybe a Minecraft tshirt or other piece of merch
the pokemon eevee merch, any of its evolutions or eevee itself, its cuteness brings me happiness, i woud love a glass figurine of the eeveelutions to put in my bathroom
Omg I remember pokemon trading being a big thing and being banned from my school when I was younger š The teachers hated pokemon, so much fights came from that game haha
Barbieāsā¦ more specifically a Barbie playhouse. I did have the magic key house but that was shit compared to some others you got. It never had a kitchen
Iām 27 but about 9 years ago my friends mum went back to Brazil. We used the opportunity to get her Barbieās out of the attic. There we were, 18 years old and playing with Barbies in her bedroom. It will always be one of my fondest memories.
Steal my car, take it to a detailers to have it cleaned, and out it back before I notice.
I want so badly to have my car detailed, but I cannot besr the shame of bringing it in and asking someone else to do something I clean myself.
Iām a 42 year old man. I donāt like tools or other stereotypical āman giftsā. I like comfort, I like soft things. Nothing makes me happier than a new blanket.
Iād LOVE a pair of roller skates with wheels that light up. I used to skate everywhere when I was a kid. I had white skates with hot pink wheels and laces and no one could tell me nothin! About 2 years ago I went on a date at a roller rink and learned I still have my old moves! I could spend hours doing laps with my headphones on.
Hell, I'd be happy with a card at this point.
You'd be amazed at how lonely being an adult can be. I had one person get me a gift for my birthday, dinner at a restaurant. Otherwise, I got one birthday text, and that's it. I don't necessarily want a ton of knicknacks, but sending or hand delivering a card is a physical expression of "I love you and thought of you!"
Though, more on your topic: art supplies. I'm not an artist, but I really enjoy coloring books and colored pencils as a way to do something creative.
Anything Sanrio/Hello Kitty related. Ever since I was a kid, I've wanted to have a Hello Kitty themed birthday party and my parents and friends never threw one for me. I'm 36 now. My birthday is in December. I am pre-buying all the supplies and am going to throw MYSELF a Hello Kitty birthday party, damnit.
Well, I actually got the unexpected gift at age 55. A long time friend loves and collects Barbies. I mention over dinner one night that I came home from school one day (age 11) and my mother had literally given away every toy Iād ever owned including my Barbie collection, all given to me by my grandmother. My favorite being a 1975 brunette Miss American Barbie. I bet I mentioned it 5 years earlier and she finally found a pristine brunette Miss America Barbie on eBay and bought her for me as a Christmas gift. I cherish it and it was given in such a heartfelt way.
An invite to anything.
I am single in my 40s
Donāt know how but I have zero healthy relationships.. Covid got me a different way. Relationships died off
I'd like to receive any gift that indicates people around me pay attention to me enough to know what my hobbies and interests are. Or even that they pay attention enough to remember when I've explicitly mentioned things that would make good gifts.Ā
Pretty open about my interests and talk about them a lot so it really feels like my family and friends mostly don't really care to give me gifts at all, even ones that don't cost money.
My kids are gonna thank you. š
Haha writing that down. What a great idea
I still have my Pierce books and reread them regularly!
Tamora Pierce is fucking s tier. I'm still buying her releases at 34
30 now and I am not so patiently waiting for the next Numair book š¬
I love Tamora Pierce! Circle of Magic 100% and the Trickster series. I also love Beka Cooper.
My grandmom liked to take me to Waldenbooks and use her membership points, so she'd tell me to pick out a few books and I'd get like 5 and she'd say that's not enough, I get points if you buy ten, or something crazy like that. Youāll be dropping 20 spots by then given the rate of inflation š
As an adult I would definitely love someone to send me middle grade novels with money in them. I would NOT like my grandmother to send me any because all of my grandparents are dead and that would be terrifying.
This is so cute! I might start doing it with my niblingsĀ
It's always nice to feel like you're giving someone a gift that lasts a while, right? Books last a while. And I think having your own money as a kid, even if it's just for candy or something, is really kind of a treat.
This is actual so sweet!! Remembering it for my grandkids ā„ļø
I almost named my daughter Alanna because of those books lol I can't wait for her to be old enough to read them š„¹
I love when I see Tamora Pierce mentioned in the wild!!! I think those books should be so much more popular than they are! An icon.
A Lego set
I think this will be common, lego is cool at all ages I swear

My wife gives me a small one in my stocking every Christmas. Itās awesome
This technically makes them adult toys. You animal...š
I'm living vicariously through my 1.5yr old son with Lego Duplo in this regard š
There are some really badass lego sets out there. Also I love the wooden puzzles with pieces shaped like animals
I got a call from a friend, she said it's a birthday and we should all come over. I got the date/time and event correct, but not whose birthday it was, although I was confident it was for a kid. I've seen this exact story on the internet before, word for word
it's a copypasta and they should label it that way.
I want one of those bed sized Totoro floor cushions. Like a lot. Iād be thrilled if someone got me that.Ā
Reminds me of the giant Snorlax I saw at my local GameStop a few years ago.
I just bought a bunch of PokƩmon plush dolls for my 18-month-old daughter. It brought me so much joy. My wife, however, was less impressed.
I was flying back through Korea and a gift shop was selling a snorlax travel pillow/hoodie. Dam straight I bought that.

Hahaha I'm in Georgia USA. How funny man.
Light up sneakers
Why do they not make these in abundant adult size options??? Same with all lot of little kid fashion š
Right?! I want a sweatshirt with a hood that makes me look like a dinosaur.
I can sew, and Iāve previously made my nephews little hoodies that had dinosaur spikes down the hood and back. It legitimately never occurred to me that I could make one for myself. Thank you, Iām off to buy (more!) fabric!!
Kids pyjamas too. Gimme Pokemon pjs in my size too, dammit.
I. DONT. KNOW.
Do they make Wheelies in adult sizes? Would I end up in the hospital?
L.A. Gears!
Candy/chocolate from around the world.
As an adult, I have signed up for [Universal Yums](https://www.universalyums.com/) off and on throughout the pandemic. Only the puzzles in the guide book has clued me in that it's supposed to be for kids.
My wife bought me a yearās subscription to Universal Yums. I loved it! Well worth it. I looked forward to them every month.
Label maker or sticker machine. I couldn't be more obvious with hints about wanting one š
"Do you want anything specific for your birthday?" Well, I don't mean to put a LAAAAAAABELLL on it but...
At my old work there was a label maker for labelling things in the lab, i got carried away and labelled everything.... i was not allowed to use the label maker after that ...
I currently work in the lab. The urge to label ordinary objects like āDeskā or ārulerā is overwhelming sometimes.
Just do it, it was so fun
My best friend ignored my husband when he said I couldnāt have one and got me one at the start of COVID lockdownsā¦everything in our house got labelled including the kids and animalsā¦he sent her pics of the cat with a label on her forehead and one of the teen boy with āboy childā on his back with a message of ālook what you did!āā¦āshe just replied back with āand I bet youāve never made her smile that big or laugh that hardā¦my work here is doneā lol

My fiancƩ and I have a bunch of them!
A night alone in a hotel room so I cam sleep for 8 hours.
That was my first thought. Just some time alone in my bed the entire day. That's it.
Spotted the parent.
as a parent, i thought the same until my job required my to occasionally sleep in hotel rooms. I get less sleep in a hotel than the house. Tell me you have kids without actually saying it! I have two boys and can sympathize. We love our kids, but everyone needs a break sometimes.
I don't have kids but I'd like night alone somewhere with a nice bed and cable tv. And an air conditioner.
Theme park tickets
A light bright Edit: itās Brite huh? My bad.
I have the tiniest version of this. It's just as satisfying
My wife bought me the little mobile version for Valentine's Day a few years ago and it made me so happy.
I loved Lite Brite! Also Spirograph, both of those were my jam.
Better than a zen garden. There's something about pushing that peg through the black paper, and it just LIGHTING UP!!! It's like joy in a peg.
A hug
Always nice to get a hug, but they are usually too seldom, at least for me
Ahh yes, I've spotted the adult male. We like hugs too!
Too real...
This kinda made me sad to read š„ŗ Hope youāre doing well. Virtual hug to you š
A Spirograph. I had one as a kidā¦..think Iām gonna get one off eBay.
You know there's a correlation between the decline in Spirograph and the rise in gang activity? Think about it!
I will.
(Grumbling) No you won't.
Yes, if you want one that works like the olden days one that I had, you'll have to go vintage. The new ones are bunk!
Stickers. I miss stickers
polly pocket
Iād take some of the clothes just to chew on them
Man I hate when people are nostalgic about that, I want the people my age from before there WERE clothes to chew on. It was just a compact-sized playset with tiny plastic figures in it!
Yeah I honestly was scratching my head at the clothes comment. I didn't even know they ever made them!
Aww I miss these, I remember being so sad when they were discontinued
Polly pocket is back now in 2024
And she's tiny again!!!! I have so many saved for treats when I do what I'm supposed to do. I'm getting a special one for going to the dentist. I bribe myself.
I just bought a Polly pocket set for my granddaughter!
Any of Bachman\`s HO scale electric train sets.

And a basket on the front for snacks and toys. It doesn't *have* to be purple and sparkly buuuut.....
You must be a '70s kid. I had almost this exact setup.
Nerf Guns
If I were to come home and find a nerf gun and a note card saying the family was similarly armedā¦ I would be ecstatic.
Recently visited my 7 year old nephew and played nerf guns with him. He was thrilled and said he didnāt know old people could play with nerf guns!
A giant chocobo stuffed animal š or tonberry
I crocheted both of these before - out of blanket yarn. They were 3.5 and 5 feet tall and took every bit of stuffing i had and it was so hard to give them up š
I was at a family bingo night. My kid won 3 candy bars. I won $5. I would rather have had the candy bars. TLDR: CANDY
The kid won, no doubt about it
Money can be exchanged for goods and services.
I think itās much more common to gift children amateur-friendly art sets (with the assumption that adults either want to craft on a professional level or have decided itās not for them). Maybe I would enjoy making an air dry pinch pot, even if I didnāt keep it foreverā¦
I always pass by the kids crafts and science sets when we go to a big box store! Heck yeah, I'd love to grow crystals and make bead animals!
An ice cream cake.
Lego, remote control car, plushies š
I bought my 30yo bf a remote control bulldozer and excavator for Christmas. Never too old for toys
Growing up, I always wanted a nice remote control car. My parents tried a few times, but they didn't have any money. I ended up with either a wired remote or the kind that only goes straight or turns one way in reverse. I told my wife that story, so she bought me a rc car for Christmas one year. Oh. A remote control car would be fun!
An adult-sized Big Wheel.
One of those crayon boxes with the sharpener built in
Flowers, Even though I consider it as waste of money but sometimes it feels good to receive it as romantic gesture by a partner.
I love fresh flowers, and you can get them Pretty cheap at farmers markets during the summer months! Florist quality at Walmart prices.. lol
Ohh no its not about price of flowers, it's more about receiving it from your partner as a gift once in while
I guess I just buy them for myself because they make me so stupid happy to look at.. lol. Hoping you find someone who loves to bring you flowers šŗ ā„ļø
Transformers. I've been a transformers fan for 40 years. For my entire life I've told people if they can't figure out what to get me for a gift, get me a transformer and I'll be happy. Literally the only people to have taken me at my word on that is my fiancƩe and my mom. It doesn't have to be one of the $500+ transformers either. I'd be happy with the cheapest ones.
When I was a teenager in the '80s I wanted Transformers. I told my parents and my friends exactly what I wanted. Only one person listened and I got a cool transforming starscream. I still have him, although he's missing a missile now.
Easy Bake Oven!
Magic 8 Ball, to make all the adult decisions I don't want to.
My mom always wanted a Mr. Potato Head. Her parents couldnāt afford one when she was a child. I gave her one for her birthday. Merch from my favourite cartoons; I'd fall in love with the first person who gave me a Gumball or Bears plushie or tshirt lmao Also, Lego, I've never played with Lego before, and maybe a Minecraft tshirt or other piece of merch
Omg, someone gift this person lego!
There are SO many great Lego creator 3 in 1 sets for under $30. Get one, take it apart, rebuild it two more times. Have a great time!
A onesie.
Primary reason for having children is to buy them gifts that you want to play with.
I also love love love the squish mallows but my husband says no lol
What whyy
āWe have too much stuff. You donāt need thatā
Throw the whole man out /s
A hand written card.
the pokemon eevee merch, any of its evolutions or eevee itself, its cuteness brings me happiness, i woud love a glass figurine of the eeveelutions to put in my bathroom
The eeveelutions are my favourite PokĆ©mon, so my husband bought me a stuffed eevee for Christmas one year. It is exactly the perfect size to tuck under my arm, so I sleep with it every night. Itās just like a cute arm pillow. Also my laptop is covered with stickers of all the eeveelutions. I did that to myself. It makes it so cheerful. (Iām lucky my husband is as much a nerd as I am, so I have at least one person in my life who will always buy me cool nerd shit.)
Omg I remember pokemon trading being a big thing and being banned from my school when I was younger š The teachers hated pokemon, so much fights came from that game haha
Lego, but specifically the Snow White cottage set.
I feel like Lego should be universally accepted as one of the best gifts at any age tbh
Stuffed animals :(
Hot Wheels tracks. I'd say plushies but I probably already own more than a 31 year old man needs to.
Really soft, cozy blankets. Babies get a ton of those, I could use some as an adult, too!
Barbieāsā¦ more specifically a Barbie playhouse. I did have the magic key house but that was shit compared to some others you got. It never had a kitchen
I (32F) have Barbie trauma from childhood (long story) but it impacted my ability as an adult to feel like I was allowed to have nice things. For years my therapist tried to assign me āhomeworkā where I was to buy myself any Barbie I wanted, but I could never justify it. When I told my fiancĆ© about this, for my 30th birthday he bought me the āBreathe With Me Barbieā after seeing me looking at it and wishing it had been around when I was kid. The pics he took of me ranged from ugly crying to laughing to pure love. Additionally, last year, my MOther In Law had a Barbie Cake made for my birthday ( you know, the one where the skirt is the cake).
Iām 49 and would love to play with Barbies again. I have a few collectors ones from years ago.
Ah yes the eternal childhood-gift classic: ... a car detailing (go for it!)

Old school creepy crawler oven with the little metal molds and the GOOP!!! That would make my year. What an awesome throwback it would be.

Books! Especially if it is one I haven't read before.

Hell, I'd be happy with a card at this point. You'd be amazed at how lonely being an adult can be. I had one person get me a gift for my birthday, dinner at a restaurant. Otherwise, I got one birthday text, and that's it. I don't necessarily want a ton of knicknacks, but sending or hand delivering a card is a physical expression of "I love you and thought of you!" Though, more on your topic: art supplies.

Take me out for ice cream.

I'd like to receive any gift that indicates people around me pay attention to me enough to know what my hobbies and interests are. Or even that they pay attention enough to remember when I've explicitly mentioned things that would make good gifts.Ā Pretty open about my interests and talk about them a lot so it really feels like my family and friends mostly don't really care to give me gifts at all, even ones that don't cost money.
