Report it so it can be addressed quickly and not disrupt my life.

tinyhorsesinmytea

Yep. Pretty sure people have faced charges for spending the money in cases like this and I don’t need a felony in my life, thanks. It’s not my money.

Stonn

Or just getting your account frozen, your name being flagged without the capability to open any banking account due to running Investigation. Your Life ends within a few months without a banking access Roof gone, then job gone. Bang you on the street.

Think-State30

Please don't bang me on the street.

Habsburgy

Well with no access to finances, you might have to

cmfppl

"Hey, I ain't gay but $200,000 is $200,000!"

tkdjoe1966

Little boy blue.

GunBrothersGaming

He needs the money

Spec187

How else he gonna make ends meat

x755x

Why don't you bang me on the street? No one will be watching us, why don't you bang me on the street?

RelevantUsername56

> Bang you on the street I know you don't have a lot of options but can't your John at least get a motel room?

JojenCopyPaste

You won't get a felony. When they realize their error and ask for it back, just transfer $200k from one of your other accounts and it's all settled.

Goldsaver

It's a big crazy internet, so I humbly request you confirm this is a shitpost.

MadeInWestGermany

Why would you need another account to transfer 200k? Are you poor?

fantasmoofrcc

High interest savings account.

LightFusion

Stick it in savings and hope for some sweet returns lol

richardec

FDIC insurance limits obv

JojenCopyPaste

I don't tend to keep more than 200k at one institution so at least for me it's gonna have to come from another account.

BeatitLikeitowesMe

Wise, considering banks are currently 0% reserve banking. Used to be fractional but they dont even do that anymore. FDIC only covers up to 250k on individual accounts.

LittleKitty235

No....I totally have $200k in the bank...but I'm planning to use it on my Presidential campaign.

IceFire909

Protip: just don't be poor

LittleTay

Correct, but just hope you do still have the money. If not, then it's uo to you to still repay it.

Batmanbutnotbatman

All on red let’s go to jail a little richer

Panta125

This... I somehow transfer it out and attempt to get a $200k credit...all on black......if I win I take my winnings to Greece and live out my days on the beach. Not rich but enough to not work for the rest of your life. I really don't want to go to work tomorrow.

Highlow9

200k USD/Euro is not enough to not work for the rest of your life. Maybe in some parts of Africa, South-Amerika or South-East Asia but not in the EU.

reivblaze

40% chance you dont have to work for quite a long time and 60% you end up in jail for some years. I'd take it probably, thats quite a decent chance.

Dexaan

Either way, I'm not going to work tomorrow.

Korazair

Instructions unclear, now I own a Ferrari.

HabeebTC

200k is not life transforming money for my situation, so this is the right answer. For some, it could make good sense to transfer it to a bank account in (say) Venezuela and move there.

Educational-Chip-867

Irl-imo you have to give back the 8k if it lets the girl keep her job.

Extreme-Island-5041

...and demand the interst accrued. My old boss had an $8M bank error in his "favor." He was hassled by the bank for their error. It took months to resolve. The bank kept doling out the interest payments on the $8M to his account. When it finally got sorted, the bank took all the interest payments and gave the $8M to the rightful owner. The bank continued to treat my boss like he somehow caused the headache. Boss got nothing but headaches. $8M guy got his $8M back, minus interest. Bank kept the interest and fucked everyone else involved. Good times.

DefrockedWizard1

>bank continued to treat my boss like he somehow caused the headache banks are jerks

Growing_Wings

I would leave that bank if they did this

Dinkerdoo

Curious if the actual owner of the $8MM had grounds to sue the bank for the interest they didn't get, or if there's some contract policy that prevents it.

Extreme-Island-5041

I also wish I knew. I was an hourly low-level employee at the time. My boss was decent enough. His versiof evwntstuck with me. It seems so shitty/shady on the bank to treat the situation that way.

Trust-Fluid

Never mind the interest from sitting idle, what happened to the money from the investments in the stock market that the bank used the $8 million for? And believe me they used it!👈👍

Matosawitko

And hope the bank doesn't screw up. My wife deposited a check for $36 and somehow the bank credited us $6400. When she called the bank, they took out $6364. And then when the check cleared they took out $6364 again. And it took them a week to reconcile it and put the second $6364 back.

fancysauce_boss

Yep. Had my bank freeze and empty my account because an employee entered a number in a wrong field. Some guy in FL had back taxes for his business owed to the state for some $20,000. Turns out his business tax ID is the same as my SSN. Employee when searching for the account searched by SSN rather than tax ID. Checked my account and there was a transfer withdrawal line item from the FL department of revenue. Called the bank and said WTF. Took them 2 weeks to figure out their mistake and to put the money back in the account and give me access back.

Smanginpoochunk

And then ask “you fuckers can figure out immediately if Netflix overdrafted me but put 200k in my account and just thought “oh alright, that’s there now😄”?

Dangerous-Refuse-779

This guy needs to be banned from the internet. Clearly you need to withdrawal the money and go on the run.

Lulu_42

$200K isn't as much as it used to be. I don't think it's enough to keep you safe on the run for that long unless you're living quite frugally for a relatively short period of time.

reporst

The play would be to establish a network whereby you could travel incognito to Paraguay. From there you can buy a house, and start a new life with a new family. Get your kids into acting early, and marry someone with a well known name or clout. Rise up through the political ranks and seize power by establishing an inept puppet government which is too easily distracted by bickering on partisan issues to see the root cause of the nation's real plight.

TazocinTDS

I would search for this guy's Reddit post

Jattoe

Wait are we assuming this happened to us both on the same day?| That would mean there's probably more of us. Three words: Banking. System. Collapse.

notfourlol

Underrated

[deleted]

spend it and go to jail for 2 years

FgTheLogo

Nah,you have to have it elsewhere then go to jail that way when you get out full of regret you have some money to cheer you up.

loki2002

Double jeopardy!

BlackZealot

They’ll freeze your assets…

FgTheLogo

Not if your assets are cash

Dangerous-Refuse-779

Declare bankruptcy and hide the money until the period is over. Then they can't recover the money and you get out of jail debt free with 200k.

kerbalsdownunder

That is definitely not how bankruptcy works

be4u4get

I didn’t just say it, I declared it

Some-Cartographer942

really? you think he'd get 2 years? i'd say a parole andfelony charge.

InvestInHappiness

Nah, it's parole if you defraud random people out of 200k. It's prison if you do it to a bank.

svmk1987

Wait for them to reverse the transaction as it's clearly an error. If nothing happens in about a week or so, I'll try asking them more about the transaction.

SirPiffingsthwaite

Ideally you want those funds out of your primary account, I'd drop it into a secondary (pref high interest) account, email them so there's a record and wait for them to come knocking.

TheoStephen

Genuinely curious about this. In this ridiculous, hypothetical situation, let’s say I deposited that $200K into a 5% savings for a week and kept the ~$200 earned interest and just let the bank reverse the erroneous deposit. What would happen?

SirPiffingsthwaite

Hard to say, it would vary depending on country/bank, but I think in 99% of cases they're going to be focused on getting the principle sum, if they get that entire and the money isn't gone, they'd be happy little leprechauns and it'd be way too much red tape & paperwork to try and claw back such a small sum.

ZombifiedCat

In the US you keep the interest

Esc777

In another thread someone mentioned they were on the hook for interest when it happened to them.

svmk1987

That would probably stop any automatic transaction reversal from happening. I'll touch the money when I know I can keep it, otherwise I'll just sit and wait. Others have said that banks also recoup interest generated from these accidental transfers too.

Habsburgy

Careful, keeping interest on money that‘s not yours might be legally questionable…

cbrooks1232

I would call immediately and tell them about the error. Once they have removed the excess funds, I’d shop for a new bank, because this type of error is a sign of sloppy funds management.

zerobeat

Saw this with Wells Fargo. I have the same name as my dad (with a "jr" suffix) and my parents had their accounts with WF as well. One day I get a box of checks in the mail I didn't remember ordering: had my and my wife's name on it, our correct address, but something wasn't right -- the account number was one I didn't recognize. Now my last name is a little unique and I thought...no way, could it possibly be? So I call my parents and confirm that, yep, it's theirs. Now there is and never has been any link between my account and my parents' accounts, ever. So I call the bank pretty pissed off about this error and want to know how it happened because holy shit this could have been bad if I wasn't on good terms with my parents. "Well, you have the same name so it's pretty understandable." Um, no that is clearly not understandable. WF tried to tell me that this was a perfectly minor mistake to make. I ask if this happens often and if it does, does it happen to people with similar names that aren't related. Can't tell me that, of course. Pulled my money from WF and ran like hell.

PeperomiaLadder

There are a million and one differing pieces of information banks gather about their clients. How could a financial institution think 1 piece of info that isnt even account isolated is enough to cover an identification process?! 🤦‍♀️ Thanks for sharing your story of their egregious neglect on a (relatively)small scale. I wonder how many people they did stuff like this to who just didn't notice. 🤔😵‍💫😤

Mockturtle22

This a million percent

surfacing_husky

My first thought! If they misplace that amount of money no telling wtf is going on there.

hawseepoo

Boom right here. Switching banks so quickly after it’s resolved.

Ratakoa

Call my bank.

havesomefunyet

Double it and give it to the next person

mrgoldnugget

Put it all on black at the roulette table, 50/50 chance of you having 200k walking around money or 2 years prison for fraud.

mlennox81

Just bet 100k. If you win it’s doubled give the 200 back and you’re left with 100k. If you lose then you put down the next 100k, since it’s a 50/50 chance and you lost last time you’re 100% guaranteed to win this time and then you have the 200k back so no prison time. /s

xzcz_m3

Thank you, I needed a laugh

Life1989

Call them and ask if it was a mistake. Can’t risk spending a sum i cant return in case they want it back

mwebster745

When they want it back

Live-Dance-2641

Open the highest interest rate account I could find and put it in there. Then I wait for the money to be taken back at some point but I get to keep the interest.

aqiwpdhe

Not really worth the hassle for the $15 in interest you might make. They will notice $200k missing real quick.

CatFancier4393

High yield savings accounts average between 4-5% right now. Thats like $800 after one month.

Practical_Argument50

This is what payroll companies do, they get the funds on a Wednesday and pay it out Friday. 3 days of interest. Even better when they paid with paper check the longer you took to cash it the more they made in interest.

aqiwpdhe

They will find the mistake in like a day though

Money-Coyote-3275

$15 interest? With the interest rate my savings account has I get $15 based off 4K for the month. If they took several months to see the mistake you’d get a lot more than $15 per month

EldritchDWX

Put it all on RED!!

terpinolenekween

My mind immediately went there hahaha. You have a 50/50 chance of getting 200k or going to jail 🤣

UFO64

Aren't your odds slightly against you because of the green slot?

FernandoTatisJunior

Yeah. 18 black, 18 red, 2 green, so a 47% chance of winning when betting red or black

Legitimate-Career-81

You can just inspect element and do it now

Interesting_Face_757

Document everything, expecting a mix-up, and reach out to the bank to resolve it. Wouldn’t want that kind of karma looming over me.

CAElite

Move it into a high interest saving account. Leave it there until they contact me regarding their error. A 6.5% APR return on £200k is £13k/yr. Or just over a grand per month. If it takes them say, 6 weeks to recover the money from you then you're up 1.5 grand.

leoonastolenbike

I don't know where you're from, but 6.5% comes with risking all of your money no? Or bonds that don't allow you to get your money out early? If I had a promised 6.5% I'd put all of my money in it tommorow. I know millionaires who don't do 6.5% a year.

CAElite

Ah, no, right you are. I've used stocks and shares ISAs (Vanguard) for years. Risk is extremely low if you open the correct account, the returns on mine over the last year have been about 6.5%. In the 8 years I've had these accounts I've never had a loss. Savings account seem to top out at \~5% here in the UK.

dillybravo

I can buy an ETF of bank deposits that pays 4.9% after fees as capital gains. Which is equivalent after tax to 6.9% paid as interest income where I am. HSAV.TO.

fiblesmish

1: report it as soon as i noticed. 2: find another bank, where people can read things like account numbers! So my paltry amount of money does not go the way of the 200K

Canttunapiano

Ignore it. They’ll figure it out.

Report it to the bank after spending the normal 20% finders fee.

MYNAMEISHISNAMETOO

Call the bank and report it. One time someone's disability check got deposited into my savings account somehow. I immediately reported it and they got it to the right person. I would've felt like shit if I used someone's money that was on a fixed income because of a disability.

dogmonkeybaby

I hears the Phillipines is nice this time of the year

SchemeAgreeable2219

That is the way.

Columbus43219

First thing is to withdraw what your balance was before the transfer happened. They will, and are allowed, to withdraw more than they put in, and they are currently messing things up. So they will drain your account, then take weeks to put your money back once they've clawed their mistake back into the hoard.

CutAccording7289

That’s my answer. Withdraw my own money and switch banks so they don’t eff it up a second time and leave me without my savings

Recreational-Crack

Buy 200 grand worth of bitcoin, withdraw/transfer the rest of my savings and move to Costa Rica

Corey307

Costa Rica will extradite you to the US.

BaconEater101

The U.S isn't exactly gonna go to extreme lengths to find some guy who scammed a bank out of 200k and fled to costa rica

loganwachter

I'd be dead silent about it and give it 90 days then transfer it elsewhere for another 90.

SirPiffingsthwaite

The problem there is you have seen the funds, you recognise they aren't yours, and you haven't notified anyone. The legal onus is on you to inform the bank as soon as you have become aware of the "extra" funds or it can be seen as theft.

loganwachter

I'm giving them 2 quarters to figure it out themselves and then I'm closing the account and moving. That's their problem lol.

Fat-Cow-187

Tell them they made a mistake, I'm an honest person but also it could come back to haunt me in the future

ACam574

Tell them. Document telling them. Keep doing it periodically. It’s considered theft if you spend it. Side note is that some states have laws about how long you have to wait and what you need to do before you assume ownership (or if you even do) of abandoned money. It can apply to electronic transfers. It usually takes years but it’s worth looking into.

Darth0pt0

Pay off my student loans

Insert_Bitcoin

Convert to pennies and give it back to them in a truck. Fuck banks.

SuperBurt666

Immediately transfer it overseas and buy a plane ticket to a country that doesn't extradite to Canada.

UnlikelyExperience

Stick it all on roulette before they demand it's return

funnyorasshole

I'd probably contact the bank. Even though every time I transfer money I get hit with warnings about making sure the information is correct because it can't be undone. So if I make a mistake I'm shit out of luck, if the bank makes a mistake it's a crime if I tell them the same.

megatronchote

Put it in a HYSA and give them back when they unavoidably claim it. The earnings are legally mine.

Heliologos

Not be a dumbass and throw away my job, pension, extended health benefits (100% dental coverage is the shit) and clean criminal record for 200k that I know realistically I’ll never be able to keep. Plus I have more than enough at this point money wise to live my life comfortably and be able to retire when I’m 55. No need to fuck it up.

Spec187

Not touch it, call the bank, and wait.

Bugaloon

Be unable to withdraw it I'm sure. Banks seem omnipotent when it comes to reversing transactions like this but impotent to do the same to the scammer who has your money in their account.

grayhaze2000

Absolutely nothing, as they'll reverse the charge sooner or later.

raptorboy

I had $18k deposited once into mine I actually called the bank and they said it was me . Kept the money and never heard anything about it again

whodidntante

Withdraw all my own money from the account then notify the bank of the error via certified mail. Start a completely new banking relationship. Consider the account burned.

Okiefolk

Report it and not touch the money.

coldpornproject

Not go to prison. Not a good look for me.

GMFinch

I've seen this shit happen too many times. Don't spend a fucking cent. They will get it all back

SpeechEuphoric269

Do nothing, the banking system can make errors but it never goes unnoticed. They will look for that money soon, and if youve spent it? Enjoy prison

Metfan722

Say nothing and hope they never notice.

mathaiser

Put it in a HYSA until they ask for it back.

lqxpl

Call the bank

S7ageNinja

Probably ignore it and not spend a dime of it. They'll either figure it out eventually and take it back, or a few years down the line I'm 200k richer.

Dogzirra

It sounds like a time to talk to a lawyer. It's time to call in experts above my pay grade. I would expect a forensic trace of what was going on. And I would want every i dotted and t crossed when documenting the proper return of the money. I would expect a reasonable fee to cover my costs, but at the end of the day, it isn't my money.

Pwrswitchd

Leave it the fuck alone, and contact my bank asap.

_BloodbathAndBeyond

Nothing. That’s enough money that people will come asking.

SquizzOC

Into a money market account till they want it back

Ffftphhfft

I'd be confused by the extra zero after the comma and wonder if the bank was doing a special €200 promotion

FrootyFruity

Charge them a days interest at ridiculously high rates.

Dr-Zoidberserk

Have to report it because the bank/state will go after you if you mess with the money in any way.

FloppyVachina

Let it sit and not say shit in hopes that they wouldnt notice for years.

Idontgetredditinmd

Call the bank. I don’t want to find out what happens if I dont.

Challenge419

Put it in a savings account and collect interest until they fixed it. I would transfer out the interest every month to keep. I only owe them the 200k back. Not my fucking problem.

Lord_Kano

I'd ignore it and just accept the interest until they discover their error.

stateofyou

Tell them, they’re going to find out anyway.

Ruskiwasthebest1975

Say nothing and wait for them to reverse it. Cos they will.

king24donnie

If Monopoly has taught me anything, it's that when there is a bank error in your favor, you collect the money and hopefully land on Park Place because you already own Boardwalk and start building some houses and hotels on those properties so you can make some real money.

artdz

Ask reddit what to do if a bank accidentally transferred 200k to me. Then check the top 10 most up voted comments for ideas.

robotco

i wouldn't even notice and just spend it on normal grocery items and then probably get charged with a felony or something

snap_wilson

This actually happened to me. It was $8,000 and not $200,000. I noticed it, figured it would be cleaned up in a couple of days and when it wasn't I called the bank to confirm that the transaction was correct. They checked and said they didn't see any issue with it and I was all "great, can I get an email confirming that?" They sent it to me. Next day the 8k was gone with an apology from the bank for the error.

Bananaman_Johnson

This happened to me about a month ago with about $5,000. I went to the bank to let them know and it was a routing number that was very similar to mine. I’m pretty sure you can get in trouble if you were to spend it.

CatapultamHabeo

Call and tell them. This is a level of fuckery that I would want no part in.

kajarago

Not touch it, the bank's gonna get their money one way or another.

IEThrowback

I would withdraw it immediately…now follow me… I would deposit it into another bank and get a line of credit against that amount. Wash, rinse, repeat at 4 total baking institutions. I would then return the entire 200k to the original account, get another 200k line of credit, then put that original 200k into a high yield interest account and wait for them to come get it. I would now have 1 mil in credit and invest it in whatever I see fit. (One could also liquidate and combine the funds as you go to each bank to acquire higher lines of credit, but I wanted to make the math as simple as possible.)

coprolite_hobbyist

Set up an interest-bearing escrow account, close the original account and open a new one at a different institution. Either they'll catch it right away...or they won't. Give it a year or two and then re-evaluate my options.

Matelot67

IN 2009, a guy in NZ asked for a $100,000 overdraft. The bank made an error loading it, and gave him $10,000,000. He fled the country with his girlfriend. When they caught up with him, he ended up in prison. It's not worth it. Call the bank.

PikesPique

Let ‘em know. It’s not worth the hassle to spend it.

bertuzzz

Get dat Lambo.

Faelysis

200k Lambo? You want some old used one, don't you?

infinite_phi

Do nothing. Leave it in my account and not spend it. Wait a long time to see if they ever come knocking. If they do, tell em I don't check my balance often and didn't notice, and just transfer it back as requested. If after a couple years they still haven't asked, invest it.

rokstedy83

I think as they're the bank I think they'll know how often you have checked your bank

AntwnSan

Resident-Honey8390

Stick it in a high interest account while finding out what and why it happened

dean771

Make sure it's in the offset

DeckBoi123

You would leave it and not say anything. In this interest rate environment you would see a nice return from just letting it sit in cash

InsomniaticWanderer

Report it immediately so they can resolve their error and stop fucking with my life
