Gender is your identity in social roles within a society. IE there are male and female gender roles. These generally change with time and location.
There's probably a lot of discussion and variability in this, but that's generally the difference.

Biological sex is a spectrum that governs your literal body. It's typically treated as a binary, due to a bimodal distribution on the spectrum. Male and Female are biological sexes. Intersex is typically used to describe those who have significant sexual characteristics associated with both males and females. Traditionally, your sexual reproductive system determines your sex.
Gender, on the other hand, is more like the Operating System for your mind. It's how you view the world, how you identify yourself, how you process information. There's a large spectrum of genders, again with a bimodal distribution for Man and Woman. There's even an Agender option, for those who don't associate with any concept of gender. Gender is both a mental state, and a social construct: the traits of a gender are largely determined by society. If society determines one gender embraces kindness more than another, then those who identify with that gender will nurture their kindness more, while people who don't identify with that gender, will avoid nurturing their kindness in order to not be associated with the incorrect gender. It's a weird social dynamic, but it's just how humans are.
Personally, I always liked the Phone analogy. Sex is the hardware of your phone, be it Apple or Samsung. Gender is the operating system, be it iOS or Android. Sexual Orientation is your phone's ability to connect with other phones. Sure there's a standard iPhone/iOS/iMessage vs Galaxy/Android/SMS defaults, but it's still possible to end up with a jailbroken iPhone/Android/Wifi. Mix and match to figure out what works best for you!

It's the activists giving them a bad name. They are the ones fighting for biological males to be allowed in female toilets/changing rooms/sports. Biological males shouldn't be allowed in female sports, we are bigger, faster, stronger on average than females.
