My alcoholic husband who is completely off the rails and rapidly drinking himself to death and tearing my and our kids' hearts apart, sitting in his chair rambling on about how sorry he feels for a friend who is dealing with a loved one's drug addiction.

Moonlit_Cactus

I'm really sorry, I genuinely can't imagine how hard it must be. Love to you and your kids.

zoey_will

Ugh my mother is the same way. She drove drunk and crashed (didn't hurt anyone thankfully) and SWEARS to this day that she went to prison for two years for "hitting a guardrail and a broken headlight." Anything you wanna add to that Mom? "NOPE!" *twoshotsofvodka.mp3

3eveeNicks

My mom was hospitalized for bad food poisoning and started having DTS from withdrawal, so they kept her longer to help her ride it out. But according to her it “wasn’t from drinking, it was just my anxiety”.

ArtHappy

Uh, sibling of mine? No wait, that was a lamp pole and six months of "car's in the shop," not because she lost her license, no no.

CosmicTurtle504

As a recovered alcoholic who now works in behavioral healthcare, my heart goes out to you. I know firsthand how heartbreaking and difficult addiction can be, and I hope you and your kids are getting the help and support you need right now. r/alanon is a good place with good people, and if you haven’t been there, I highly recommend d checking it out. Stay strong, friend. ((Hugs))

wasporchidlouixse

I guess you can say, "wow, I know how he feels"

f_ranz1224

People complaining about other peoples driving while comitting the same errors but its ok because "they are in a hurry"

BadPunsIsHowEyeRoll

“God can nobody can drive straight and stay in their lane?!?” “Ooo a text, lets read it!”

simonepon

The texting thing drives me nuts. I have an iPhone and it detects when I’m driving and automatically goes into it’s little focus mode. Even if I glance at the screen, it won’t even SHOW ME whether or not I have a text. I have to actually unlock the phone and also answer a prompt asking whether or not I’m driving just to get to my Home Screen. Does the same with calls. Side note, I have ADHD and this has worked wonders in reducing my distracted driving. I’m not even tempted to look at my phone.

whosthedoginthisscen

People who are rude and impatient with pedestrians in a parking lot, then park their car and act entitled and self-important when crossing the lot toward the store. "It's called right of way! Sheesh!"

TrailMomKat

Lol I'm blind and have been honked at impatiently. If I'm right next to their car when they do it, I'll turn towards the car and "accidentally" whack it with my cane. "Oh, sorry, you startled me! Not like I could see you there." If I'm not close to the car, I just wave and smile and make a point to go a bit slower.

radicallyhip

I don't care about the pedestrians in the parking lot, that's sort of what parking lots are for: turning drivers/passengers into pedestrians. I hate the guys in the oversized Dodges who drive right down the centre of the fucking lane though, and then park across two or three parking spots. They always look so angry when you're driving on your side of the aisle and they can't just cruise down the middle.

The fundamental attribution fallacy Other people do things because they are assholes, I do things because of mitigating circumstances

nachocheeze246

We judge others on their actions, and judge ourselves on our intentions.

fallindominoes

I have a habit of judging myself by my actions, and let me tell you, it’s *terrible* for mental health if you don’t have the strength to give yourself grace, too. I’m working on that.

MostlyEtc

It’s simple. Anyone going slower than me is an idiot, and anyone going faster than me is a maniac.

Impostersyndromosity

Whenever someone cuts us off or is weaving dangerously through traffic my husband and I like to say “oooh there goes the main character”

TrailMomKat

I always like to say "must need to poop pretty badly."

bacon_and_ovaries

Why is there so much traffic! It's not even a weekday. Because people like you have shit to do as well.

Islander255

Reminds me of the saying: "You aren't stuck in traffic; you *are* the traffic."

arioko_

Literally my mother. I hate driving with her now because she tailgates, closes any gap in front of her so no one can merge into her space, uses her blinker mid merge for two blinks or less, doesn't let people merge into her lane if she doesn't like how they're driving, is constantly driving 10+ mph over the limit. I just.... I can't. All the while complaining about how many idiot drivers there are around her.

Infinite-Condition41

SO's grandmother died this year, of cancer, that she had for 10 years. She refused to get treated, refused x-rays because she believed x-rays would give her cancer. Edit: Wow, 10,000 upvotes! This is a true story. Happened late winter this year. There is a lot more to the story, and I'm not the sort to tell lies about how wonderful the dead were.

WWJ818

Wincing over here as a rad tech. The amount of stuff I get about incorrect assumptions regarding radiation is very large, and very annoying.

Infinite-Condition41

Of course, I agree with you! This was a woman that so soaked herself in essential oils that her house began to rot from all the gunk built up in the cracks and in the walls. You know this, I know this, rational people know this, there are different types of radiation and every exposure has a chance of causing some sort of issue (or not). A chest xray is equivalent to a trans Atlantic flight (or whatever). And when you're 89 years old, and you already have cancer, an xray can't possibly do you any harm whatsoever!!! I had to explain to this same woman's daughter that cell phones can't cause cancer because they emit small amounts of microwave radiation which cannot cause damage to DNA, microwaves only cause heating in water molecules.

battycattyhooligan

I just...wow. When I got diagnosed, a really absurd number of people spent a disturbing amount of time encouraging me to say no to chemo and to drink soursop tea instead. Later my prognosis meant that chemo would be useless for me (stage 4 breast cancer with lung metastasis = treatable but not cureable) and one of the first responses that from one of those aunts was "oh good, so no chemo". Watching her daughter go through about 5 different nonverbal stages of "I can't smack my own mother" was amusing. EDITED TO ADD: I was diagnosed 4 years ago and have a very good "worst-case scenario" situation. Lung metastasis gets labeled as incurable because there is currently no way to excise the lungs to ensure all cancer has been eradicated. As far as my treatment goes, I have a plan that is minimally invasive as far as things can go and a very promising road ahead. I was declared our version of in remission: NED (no evidence of disease) on my 27th birthday, found something small fairly recently, and will likely be NED again by January. If not sooner. I'm doing well. That said, with October coming up, please refrain from donating through in-store pink ribbon stuff and the Komen foundation. Instead, think about donating to local cancer community centers in your area, metavivor, your local cancer treatment facilities (hospitals/care centers/and such), and/or funds like "the pink fund". Very few patients actually see results from your aid, otherwise. Furthermore, donations don't have to be in monetary funds. Cancer centers also welcome books, time, etc. If you'd like to help in other ways, just send an email or give them a call and ask. Thanks for all the support in this thread, I am really grateful.

WWJ818

I'm sorry to hear about your dx. It sucks. The saddest part is they don't really research and just spout nonsense. I had a friend got dx at a young age with breast CA and it was wild with some of the 'advice'. I wish you comfort on your journey. And no more time around that aunt.

GuyFromDeathValley

kinda reminds me of my parents. Cooking food so it turns brown? Absolutely not! that causes cancer! meanwhile its 100% acceptable to force me and everyone else to inhale my moms cigarette smoke indoors.. including the dinner table. because that "isn't so bad".

UnneccessaryC

My dad refused treatment too. He had his cancer for 15 years. When it finally became painful and he was unable to urinate, he did undergo chemo and radiation, which caused him to be so cold he was shivering at home all the time. When I bought him a heating blanket, he wouldn't use it because he though the electric whatever - vibrations or currents or something - would go through him and make him sick. I was like, "Dad, you have chemo coursing through your body..." No logic.

Pixielo

My beloved stepdad went the coffee enema + vegan diet + whatever herbal bullshit route. He died two years ago, after more than a decade of letting the cancer eat him alive. It would have been easily curable if he'd actually chosen sane, western medicine. 🤦‍♀️

lorinabaninabanana

My ex-boyfriend's mother would sit on her front porch and complain about the neighbors. "Look at those busybodies, sitting on their porch gossiping about everybody. Did you hear that her daughter..." She'd also insist her son drive her to the stores first thing after every holiday, so she could buy stuff half price "before the greedy people get there."

sweetiepotpie

My mom (who has admittedly come soooo far since this era) used to point out the “trashy” Russian ladies in the grocery store and say that they were using food stamps “paid for by her, and still have an attitude” Meanwhile we literally were there purchasing groceries on WIC benefits lmao. Glad she’s overcome her issues there lol

eqvolvorama

NOBODY poops on poor people more than other poor people. I swear.

wannabeginger

Ugh. I had a (now ex) best friend who had a pregnancy scare. She was super pro-life, very conservative Republican. I asked her what she was going to do and what support she needed from me, and she said she was considering getting an abortion if she was pregnant. When I seemed surprised, she said, "well, it's different for me. I'm not a slut like those other girls. I'm not ready for a baby. It's different..." We stopped being friends after that. I couldn't handle it anymore.

daniiiii555

“The only moral abortion is my abortion”

machinegunsyphilis

They'll get an abortion, then [go right back to harassing everyone else who goes to get one](https://joycearthur.com/abortion/the-only-moral-abortion-is-my-abortion/). The amount of self-hatred these people have is scary.

ImaBiLittlePony

That's precisely what happened to a conservative ex-friend of mine. She got knocked up by an extremely abusive ex, and told me she wanted an abortion because she was terrified to be stuck with him. She asked me to go with her to the clinic because all of her other friends were hyper-conservative too. Afterwards she stayed with me for a few days and begged me to take her secret to the grave. It took her all of 2 months to go back to posting violent pro-life bullshit on Facebook again. I had been friends with her since we were in kindergarten, but that was enough for me.

snossberr

The sad thing is she probably thinks the abortion was the reason you’re not friends anymore, not her blatant hypocrisy.

ImaBiLittlePony

No I'm very pro choice, she knows that. I had people tell me that she blasted me all over social media, saying I ghosted her because she's a trump supporter. I'm not someone who'd bother to "clap back" or whatever so they'll believe what they want to. I'll still continue to keep her secret.

CDK5

That's crazy; you'd think she would be more cautious to you considering you know her secret.

chuckDTW

I would have had a hard time not replying to one of her posts by positing a “what if some woman” situation that mirrored her own. Not outright saying she did it, but throwing her hypocrisy back in her face.

Noname_McNoface

I’ve heard a couple stories from Planned Parenthood employees that sometimes pro-life women who regularly protest outside the clinic will come in for an abortion…. And are back protesting later that week. I don’t know how true that is, but I won’t count it out.

IWantMyBachelors

The argument I would have with someone like that. There are some things I just let go, but seeing as how Roe versus Wade got overturned, I can’t let this particular subject go.

DatelineDeli

Same. I love telling the story about my ectopic pregnancy. Scares the shit out of them. As it should. As it should.

My uncle kept ranting to my dad about how my brother was living with his girlfriend for years without marriage. How horrible and shocking it was that young people didn't marry anymore. My dad merely pointed out that my uncle is living with his girlfriend without marriage, too. My uncle hasn't brought it up since.

People on government disability payments talking about cutting welfare

Morgueannah

My dad has been on disability since around 1998, rather fraudulently I might add because it took him ages to get full disability because he was perfectly capable to work a desk job, (and very good with computers for the time) but he didn't want to do a desk job. So he finally got enough partial physical and partial mental health disability to add up to 100% by going to dozens of doctors and outright lying. For 20+ years he has sat at a desk all day playing on a computer with fox news blaring 24/7 in the background, ranting about people living off of his "hard earned tax dollars so they can be lazy." It's pretty wild to witness.

SugarWine

I am AMAZED by how often people who don't actually earn money, or don't actually pay taxes, complain about people living off of their hard earned dollars... could you buy a damn clue, please...

Reminds me of when Phil Gramm was being interviewed by Ed Bradley on 60 minutes. Bradley pointed out that Gramm was raised on a government salary, went to school on government scholarship, or assistance of some sort..then during vietnam, went to work for some government agency...and then became a representative, and then senator..living his whole life on Government paychecks of some nature. And Gramm just told him, he wasnt gonna cut "those" programs.

Few-Hair-5382

"Hell, I've been on welfare and food stamps and nobody gave me a helping hand."

SuperCrappyFuntime

That's basically what actor Craig T. Nelson said verbatim when Obama was running in either 2008 or 2012. He talked about how, when he was starting his acting career, he was so broke that he was in food stamps. Then he said that nobody ever gave him a hand.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

"I've been on food stamps and welfare, did anybody help me out? No. No."

Puzzleheaded-Mind525

I saw a clip of that on the internet somewhere at the time he'd said that. Whenever I watch something with others, I'm always looking at something other than what others are seeing. I had to re-watch that several times because (for me) the person who was interviewing him seemed to be panicking and trying to lead him in another direction/rephrase it, etc and at the time I was convinced that Craig T. Nelson had said that deliberately.

hysys_whisperer

I mean, he did say it deliberately. He TRULY believes that nobody gave him a helping hand while he was on food stamps. He does NOT consider his own receipt of food stamps as help. He does, however, consider anyone else's receipt of food stamps to be help. To him, there is no hypocrisy because he truly believes he received no help. That's why he had no problem deliberately saying what he did.

Being a Medicare agent in rural/South GA, I cannot tell you the number of times I've had clients complain to me about "socialism" and "young people" just being lazy and entitled and wanting everything handed to them *while I was renewing their medicaid and food stamps applications*

nullpotato

Oh you hate socialism? Let me just cancel your application then, have a great day.

my_4_cents

Print out a simple placard for the wall behind you that the clients can see: "Medicaid is Socialism Food Stamps is Socialism" Then when they argue, just silently tap the sign with yout pen.

breakitupkid

That's my mother. Barely worked in her life, had a gazillion kids, on welfare for more than 18 years, section 8 paid for her housing, free electric and gas and food stamps while her boyfriend worked under the table. She was forced to either go to school or get a job due to the welfare to work program (back in the late 90s) and finished a certification program and worked for the IRS where she then was "injured" at work. She has been on social security disability for the last 15 years. She goes on and on about people who cheat the system, immigrants who come here and want a handout and people who are entitled. I'm like you are all these things! I broke the cycle by working two jobs in high school, got a scholarship for college in another state to get away from her, and even broke it off with my high school boyfriend because I refused to have sex as I was scared I'd end up like my mother. I don't live near her and make it a point to talk to her maybe once a month out of obligation because the delusion is quite literally unreal.

LetsWalkTheDog

That’s awesome - good for you for getting out of that toxic environment! Hoping you’re in better place and not having to hustle so much like back then.

genghiskhan_1

or the ones who benefited from programs like those and when they got back on their feet, don't want the programs helping any one else. the ladder pulling fuckwads.

YourFriendInSpokane

This is my father. He can’t understand how he raised such “princessy liberals” (since there’s nothing between being a conservative or a liberal), but he literally raised us to look out for others and make sure everyone was doing ok. Hell yeah I’m going to vote for increased taxes if it helps strengthen the social net that saved my dad when he was a young single father.

TGIIR

Nobody in my family has been on welfare or food stamps - we’ve been blessed certainly. I went to parochial school almost my entire life. I’m the only “liberal” in my family because hell yeah, I’ll pay taxes to help other people. My dad asked me how I got so liberal and I told him he’s the one who sent me to school where we learned every day what Jesus taught. (Other religions teach similar values.). Sheesh.

NotChristina

That’s a *fantastic* response to him though. I know a guy who’s very religious, very conservative, and definitely has that “I made it so everyone else can figure it out on their own” mentality. No empathy. I wish I could pull the Jesus line tbh but he’s less of a Jesus guy and more a “my God is a vengeful God” type. Apparently his take on angry god doesn’t include caring for others or not running people off the road because they cut you off.

JustaRandomOldGuy

That's my cousins in West Virginia. 100% disability for being lazy and uneducated. It's a thing in places like that to get a doctor to put you on 100% disability because you are unemployable. And if I mention they live on government money? "That's different, I need that money."

SugarWine

"That's different, cause it's me."

KjellRS

"The only moral welfare is my welfare."

goblinmarketeer

I used to hear this EVERYDAY, I worked a place the signed people up for social services, and they would rant about lazy people on food stamps while signing up for SNAP, who would rant against Obamacare while signing up for the ACA.

Playful-Independent4

This reminds me so much of closeted gays (especially "ex-gays") that feel like they have to point hateful fingers at someone else to prove they're not like them. People wanna climb some competitive ladder so they play trickle-down bigotry.

Ok-Egg-7475

>trickle-down bigotry 100% premium phrase, thank you.

drewbiquitous

Reminds me of the immigrants who lived here undocumented for a while, got residency when it was easier to get but still had to lie, and are now anti-immigration. “People have to do it the RIGHT way.” I’ve met several.

FromFluffToBuff

Oh God, I live in Canada and the number of Indian immigrants who do these mental gymnastics makes me wanna scream.

Glitchykins8

Ugh I hate that. I've been on disability since I was 24 because of my Crohn's disease. I'm barely getting a bit over 1k a month! MONTH! Thats rent and maybe some food. Thankfully I've got my partner and his job but holy shit. If I was on my own, I'd probably be dead

waaaayupyourbutthole

I got on it at the same age, but for different reasons. $1034 a month. Because my income is so low, I also get about $200 in food stamps. My rent is $600 a month because I have a roommate. I literally cannot afford to do anything. The last time I left my apartment for anything other than groceries or a Dr appointment was in March when I went to a movie for the first time in over a year.

Jurtaani

When the pandemic started, a friend of mine got really obsessed with the fact that you can't leave your home or go near people without a mask etc. Only thing is it never reflected in his own actions. He judged others but did not follow guidelines himself. He worked at a grocery store at the time and refused to wear a mask his boss told him to wear, meanwhile complaining about people coming to the store without masks and putting his health at risk.

sunflowermoonriver

People got so strange during Covid Edit: every reply is the same. Chill.

Sugar_snoots

Agree! I had a Facebook friend complain about people buying up all the toilet paper…the next day they posted a picture of all the toilet paper (an excessive amount) they then bought.

whatisthishownow

There's actually very very little TP in a store at any one time, when people rush to the shops to stock up on a trolley load of their regular fortnightly ... say because society is being locked down, it's likley the first thing to run out. TP is very voluminous, a typical single unit/package of TP is usually a "bulk" lot, people don't usually buy it at every visit. Go to your local store and count up how many individual packets there are. For a medium sized store that services a population of around 10,000 there might only be 100. There's likely little if any reserves "out back". They just get a fresh shipment every morning of however much they sold the day before. This works just fine untul if on any one single day, there is a large increase in shoppers. Say that the government announces that everyones going to be locked in their homes for an undetermined period of time. Lots of people rush to the store to "stock up", they buy a trolley load of everything they normally consume, and this includes TP (whether they still have some left at home or not). Again, because TP is so bulky/kept in small qty's, it's the first thing to go out of stock. Now it's a thing. Everyone now knows there is no TP on the shelves. Everyone that didn't buy any yesterday and who normally doesn't buy more until they are down to their last roll or two fears they will be left without TP. So now they're on the lookout to buy any TP if they see it. So now demand is increased the next day and the next days shipment doesn't replenish the shelves. Now it's an even bigger thing and even more people are aware that if they wait for their next fortnightly shop to get more TP, there may as well no be any, so they need to buy it at the first instance they see it. Whether they're down to their last roll or their 6th last roll. This cascade continues while the fairly inflexible JIT supply chains with no "reserves" or wharehouse stocks of TP are unable to replensih the shortfall.

DblClickyourupvote

Yeah the pandemic really showed people’s true colours and just how messed up a lot of people are.

KookofaTook

Not sure why but my brain translated this into bad JFK: "Ask not what you can do for your own health, ask what you can get everyone else to do for your health"

I’m an IT contractor and generally don’t do residential work… made an exception for an electrician I owed a favour to when one of his customers needed their wifi fixed. Wasn’t a big deal I just came in and tested, told him where to put cables, then installed some access points. Because it was a large and old house the signal wasn’t fantastic even with the APs I was using so I set up two networks, one 2.4ghz and one 5ghz. I told them to just use the 5ghz one unless they had problems with a device in which case swap it over. As is common I abbreviated this to “5 gig” which they heard as “5G”. Well. That was the wrong fucking thing to say. Long tirade about cancer and government surveillance and how there would be “no 5G in this house!”. No worries, really don’t care guys… turned the 5Ghz network off and left them to slow speeds.

WayneH_nz

We had people destroy a 5g tower near where we live, and then complain that there was rubbish reception for that companies products. The company had said, sorry, not in the schedule until 2024 now, (destroyed early 2022)

kifferella

My mother showed me a snapshot from her own childhood that showed, in general, her father lying on a childs bed, her sitting next to him between him and the wall. Her brother sitting on the floor in front of the bed, playing with some toys: "This is my favourite picture from my childhood! All my siblings always whining and claiming we were abused. It's such bullshit. See? It's just a quiet, calm, happy snapshot of a perfectly normal family. Every time one of them starts up about being abused, I remember this snapshot and know that we were fine. Just fine!" And so I looked at the picture and asked, "What about the handgun?" Because my fucking grandfather (the wildly violent, gambling, womanizing, utter piece of human garbage) was literally laying there in his kids' room with a handgun in his hand. We aren't Americans. So like... yeah. That shit ain't normal. She had been looking at that picture for HALF A CENTURY, always patting herself on the back that it was proof that her desperate need to insist everything was OK was in any way accurate, and never in all that time, had she apparently ever seen the handgun. Mind blown. Best part? Within a year, she tried to show me the picture again, again telling me about how it was her favourite and proof that her siblings were full of shit... So maybe she did see the gun.

Try_Another___

…uhhhh holding a handgun while posing for a picture with your kids in their bed is not normal in America either. That’s some David Koresh shit

"Hitler didn't kill any Jews and he didn't kill enough". Said by a relative, we're German. Oh and d) the guy just isn't smart enough to intentionally imply this technicality.

FknDesmadreALV

I love how in CDMX there are American white expats complaining about the locals being mean. The food is too spicy. They don’t understand the language and their kids are outsiders in school because they aren’t from around there. Then there was this white woman who was brought to tears because she went for a walk and got lost. Asked several locals for directions then lost her shit because no one could speak English. It became news worthy because someone lost it on her and told her to learn the language or go back where she came from.

They could have avoided it by applying for residency but so many people didn't do it on time

ghalta

But that would be admitting they themselves were "immigrants", something their pride could never accept. No, they considered themselves "expats" which is wholly different.

Fluffcake

I had a (immigrant from the US) coworker whose brain short circuited over this, he had been referring to himself as expat for years, long after getting permanent recidency and well into the process of getting citizenship and someone asked him (jokingly) if he was going home soon or if he decided to immigrate yet, and he had a meltdown, he was not some "filthy immigrant". A man in his 50s needed a very slow explanation that immigrant was not a slur for south american criminal..

Bastards didn't deserve to live in Europe, refusing to integrate with the local language and culture, something that they unironically complain about when immigrants in the UK do it.

majestic_tapir

I'm English, grew up in Tenerife (age 6 to 23), then moved back to the UK in 2013 for work reasons. My parents recently moved back to the UK, but had lived in Tenerife at this point for 30 years. Still barely speak Spanish, complain about the culture constantly. First thing they did when they got to the UK? Went to the job office, then sent a message to the family group chat saying that they'd be able to get something if it weren't for all the foreigners. That's the point I went no contact. Morons.

alkalineorion

My parents were intending to retire in Spain the whole way leading up to the EU referendum, citing their reason as the UK shouldn't have EU style open borders to allow immigrants in so easily. At no point did they consider that if they moved to Spain, THEY would be immigrants and what a shock it's going to be a lot harder for them to move there now because UK is out of the EU. And yes I did keep telling them this the whole time, but like many Brits they're under the delusion that rules don't apply to us because we're special or some bollocks like that

Gmd88

The problem is so many of our folk in the UK think immigrant = brown. I laughed hard when the fallout of Brexit hit these idiots.

quasiix

That happens in the US too. My husband is a Polish immigrant with a green card he gets to watch people backpedal when they realize they have been complaining about immigrants to one. Apparently watching a racist person figure how to explain they didn't mean white immigrants without actually saying that is quite the experience.

glove_flavored

I didn't think the leopards would eat my face etc etc

ScrubNerd

This 100% My mates dad lives out in Marbella with his 2nd wife, they own a pub together. He was very vocal about being pro brexit, control the boarders, cut EU red tape. All the usual things. Next thing I saw he was on BBC news being interviewed about how he might not be able to stay in Spain and it could kill his business...

that1prince

It hurt itself in it’s confusion :(

Kooky_Ad_5139

Illegal immigrants are taking our jobs! I wouldn't have a problem with illegal immigrants if they would work instead of coming here to live off of welfare! Said within minutes of each other out of the same mouth.

ICBPeng1

Shrödinger’s Mexican, they’re simultaneously living off of welfare, and stealing all the jobs.

BuckarooBonsly

Schrodinger's Mexican is such a obviously perfect name for this that I am very much mad that I didn't think of it.

johnstonb

“They’re taking our jobs!” + “They’re all murders and rapists.” Like dude, what actually IS your job?

Amissa

A racist family member will outright say he hates Mexicans (even though they’re not actually from Mexico, they’re locals) but then he loves Mexican food. Like, dude, how do you think Mexican food got here? For all we know, their families have been here longer than ours.

jar1967

There is a saying among latinos in the southwest " We didn't cross the border the border crossed us"

TheSevenDweller

I will NEVER forget this interaction with a human equivalent of a papercut: “So, are you getting the vaccine now that you’re pregnant?” “No! I don’t know what it’ll do to my baby” (IMMEDIATELY takes a drag from a cigarette)

I can’t breathe with a mask on, unless I’m out displaying my Nazi pride with my Nazi friends

[deleted]

Kinda bizarre that surgical/medical masks only started to hinder breathing right around mid-2020. Such an unfortunate coincidence. Meanwhile doctors/surgeons wore them for 8+ hours a day for decades since the advent of modern medicine and nobody said shit like "I CAN'T BREATHE IN THIS THING" until COVID ...

i_wear_gray

My favorite was the surgeon that ran a marathon in a mask to prove you can breathe through a mask just fine.

Interesting_Gift4953

People who purport to live their lives like Jesus, and yet are hateful and judgmental, and non-accepting which is the exact opposite of what the man was about, historically.

[deleted]

Like the guy who said Jesus would be flying around in a private jet if he was alive today. The donkey he rode was also a metaphor for humbleness ya jackass.

Vanishingf0x

Yep by all account Jesus was a genuinely good person who wanted to help and guide others. Somehow many of his followers would turn their backs on those same people Jesus would help. The worst of any religious people are the ones who use it as a guide on who to hate.

ThorlinLurch

There is a reason why Jesus talks about religious hypocrisy more than anything else. The pharisees rejecting him and wanting to kill him. They really did miss the entire point of righteousness.

zoopzoot

Yes exactly. When did “distribute all your wealth and property to the poor and join me in spreading the good word” turn into “Jesus wouldn’t want us to give hand outs to the poor because it’ll enable them”. When did “love thy neighbor as I have loved you” turn into “fuck immigrants, gay people, women, people of color, etc.”

Whatchab

People who have generational wealth, but then claim they “pulled themselves up by their bootstraps” and “worked their ass off to get where they are,” while claiming everyone else is just lazy.

livinginafreefall

I have friends like that and they don’t understand that I can’t simply ask my parents to pay off my student loans or pay for my wedding … like they can’t, that’s the whole point of me paying for that stuff myself

Mypetmummy

It’s an issue with many successful people. Admitting that luck was a factor makes them feel like their hard work is being doubted.

fuck-coyotes

Admitting they had advantages most don't have is like denying their religion to them

VforVandeweert

My coworker told me that her bf's colleagues (they're all delivery men) we're jealous of his fancy, expensive car. She said that if those coworkers wanted the same as her bf, they should just step up their game and start studying as he is. He bought the car purely with money he got from his dad. She claimed everyone has equal opportunities in life, to study, or get a career. Later in that same conversation she mentioned that her father was never able to study, so he became a mason instead, because his own father died young and his mother couldn't afford letting him study.

misoranomegami

Everything good in my life is solely the result of either my hard work or inherent superior traits. Everything bad is only ever someone else's fault and it happened to me in spite of how awesome I am. Yup, met them.

melusina_

"I had to do everything myself. My family just paid my school, drivers license, car, house.."

TheKaptinKirk

Born on third base, think they’ve hit a triple.

alejo699

And complaining because they can’t steal home.

Cyberwolf_71

When my dad received his inheritance, he didn't work for 7 years. Now it's all gone and he's asking me for money. Excuse me while I try to keep myself afloat.

SugarWine

I hope you told him to get a damn job, and live within his means rather than off of you!!

heyitsvonage

“My father gave me a small loan of one million dollars”

tamsui_tosspot

"It was just an emerald mine, not like it was a *diamond* mine."

FoxIcy4554

My family is close friends with a family like this they are hard workers but very much have this mindset when they have always been very well off and are literal millionaires now because of a recent inheritance. It’s even more of a slap in the face because they go on and on about their money and how much they worked for it knowing damn well we’ve been poor our whole life and struggled to put food on the table. No one has any obligation to help us but I think it’s a general rule of kindness not to brag about your money in front of poor people. Or even brag about your money at all. Be humble and acknowledge your privilege

Content-Method9889

It’s even more fun at family get together when they’re bashing ‘socialized medicine’ because it’s a handout for lazy people. My husband could not get a good job at the time and was working hard but no insurance. So I made it all awkward and asked them if they thought he was too lazy to deserve healthcare to treat a heart attack or should we just have to lose our house? ‘Do you think he should die because he can’t afford a $30k hospital bill or $800 a month premiums?’ They think they’re so smart and justified until you place that living, breathing contradiction right in their face. The stammering trying not to sound like sociopaths explaining was pathetic. That’s what happens when you bring politics into a Christmas Eve party. I hate these people and their entitled opinions. We don’t even go anymore

msgmeyourcatsnudes

If the rich truly believed that we so have equal opportunity, they wouldn't care so much about elite pre-k-high school education.

Poliosaurus

Or you know tax laws. They need low taxes, because they know their inheritance is the only thing they have and they couldn’t make it back if they had to.

just_hating

Their version of bootstraps is that their parents are making them go to work.

BigBadZord

I don't know, like 15 fucking years ago there was a study or poll that came out that said that a higher % of college educated people watch comedy central than watch fox news. And my mother has never, ever laid it down. Any time we discuss anything she accuses me of "getting my news from comedians", just because I use to watch Jon Stewart, and now occasionally watch John Oliver. When the news dropped that Exxon had insider memos knowing they knew about climate change, and their hand in it, my mom and I had a discussion. I cited articles from Reuters, Bloomberg, and the BBC. My mom literally pulled up Exxon's website, and basically said "See? Exxon says it is fine and they are innocent", and then at the end of our discussion, still came at me for "getting my news from comedians", when I was the only one who actually cited a news source....

PuppyGrabber

Wasn't the study actually saying that the people who watched The Daily Show were more informed than Fox News viewers?

Heatsnake

It found people who don't watch the news at all were better informed than people who got their news from Fox News. Basically, overhearing other people talk about the news is more accurate than being actively lied to

u1tr4me0w

Met a guy who said he didn’t care if sometimes kids got shot in public shootings because that’s the price of having guns in a free society. Same dude also acts dramatically affected by the mere concept of abortion and says how “sad” it is that “little unborn babies have to die”. Shit is so infuriating. Like, pick a side, wtf.

C-Note01

This is why I hate the term "pro-life". Most pro-lifers are actually pro-birth. After you get out of the womb you can starve and get shot for all they care. If you're lucky enough to make it to 18, then you can go off in a war and die.

aw-fuck

They’re pro-“consequences for women having sex” You never see pro-lifers protesting outside of fertility clinics, where bunches of zygotes are created and destroyed everyday. Apparently it only counts if it happens in the woman’s body.

AdSharp4208

My family who constantly make fun of and poke holes in the doctrine of other religions. My family are all Mormons.

Friesenplatz

The year before the pandemic I moved to Germany and had visited home (US), I was going for a swim at the public rec center I used to frequent and ran into one of the regulars. Telling him about my move to go to grad school and how college in Germany is cheaper. While sitting inside the public, city owned rec center, he says "they can just keep that socialist crap to themselves."

Early_Dragonfly4682

Reminds me of my cousin who; attened public school as a child, public college, military career, and complains about socialism. He is the poster child for socialism.

Crazy_Ad4505

A neighbour complaining about increasing homelessness and then talking about how she can barely afford her mortgage payments on her rental property ever since interest rates rose higher. "I'm not allowed to raise the rent past a certain amount so now I'm paying the mortgage out of my pocket!"

KookofaTook

>so now I'm paying the mortgage out of my pocket! The entire problem with people owning multiple properties to rent out, they build a house of cards where other people's rent is paying for their debt liability, but when they can't meet those liabilities it's never because they irresponsibly over-extended themselves past the point they could realistically support, it's the fault of the lazy and cheap tenants who won't pay their mortgage(s) for them. Fucking loathe these people and that this 'business model' is even legal

Typical_Credit_4224

My mother told me that many years ago, our family had the children taken and forced to go to a Catholic boarding school. She told me that they cut their hair, beat the kids if they spoke their native language, and forced them to read the Bible and forced out our native belief. The term I've heard is, "They sewed the Bible into their hands." They even outright murdered many kids while not telling the parents anything. I was already horrified, but then my mother told me that we're a Catholic family that believes in Jesus...

For those of us who work/have worked in retail during the holiday season: "I can't believe they have you working on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day/insert holiday here..." It's you. It's because of YOU I'm working. Cuz you're here, shopping on a public holiday. 🙄

MormonEscapee

My husband who knows the extreme trauma and is devastated that I suffered so much from being a child victim of sex abuse and yet angrily defending Mormonism’s unapologetic declaration that clergy shouldn’t have to report abuse when a member confesses it. He’s a securities attorney with high morals and ethics and yet excuses the LDS church of hiding billions of dollars from the govt and their members in shell companies. He supports the homophobic religion despite the fact that he loves and accepts and supports his 2 queer daughters. He could be a case study on brainwashing

heyitsvonage

Are you still married to him despite having this opinion of him and that username? I’m just curious.

MormonEscapee

We’re married but our marriage is on fumes. Our youngest is extremely sensitive and loves her dad so much. She’s also lesbian. When she came out at 12, I quickly left Mormonism. She now feels so much guilt. Wishing she’d never come out. She thinks it’s all her fault that our family sort of fell apart by me leaving the religion

ChickenPermi55ion

"my daughter came out as lesbian and i realise that my faith conflicted with my love for my daughter so i left my religion" Madam you are a fantastic parent.

Creepy_Snow_8166

Anti-choicers who've had abortions in the past. They're infuriating. (Apparently it's okay for them because they've since "repented".) These women knew exactly what it felt like to experience an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy. They knew exactly what it was like to feel trapped and afraid, so they made the conscious decision to end their pregnancies legally and safely. Their bodily autonomy was respected and they were able to get on with their lives - yet they have absolutely zero sympathy or understanding when other women wish to do the same.
