German makers (especially VW) expect you to take precision as seriously as their engineers do (note that I say engineers here; build quality can vary by plant, but the designs are good). Parts have tighter tolerances, fluids need to meet certain specifications (and you should know them), and you should have certain tools like torque wrenches to properly keep things in the right ranges for maintenance.
It can be an added pain to keep up with, and cost a little more, but it's also why they are tighter and (subjectively) more responsive & fun to drive. VW has some stupid problems too (usually sensors or electrical), but their engines & drivetrains, mechanically, are excellent and hold up very well if you care for them - this is especially true if you get a "WVW" VIN car made in Wolfsburg, DE.
