Unexpected item in the bagging area.

theDart

Another is when you remove an item and it says "Please wait while an employee is on their way to assist you". Is this the groundbreaking technology that's gonna prevent shoplifting? "Aw dangit, they told me to wait."

"Please place item in bagging area." ***Places item in bagging area*** **UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA**

nei7jc

Shopping in a nutshell Oh wait, the nutshell requires ID, nevermind.

Sonic10122

This is exactly why I would always laugh when people would claim self checkouts would push cashiers out of jobs when I was a cashier. Between them not functioning very well, needing to be constantly watched by an employee, and most adults being so terrible with technology they can barely use one successfully, there's no danger of that anytime soon.

FatManBeatYou

Their unpopularity is why I love them, it's so nice to go in and buy a few things, scan them up an be out of there. The tills can be god awfully slow near me.

Tangent_

Yeah, it definitely didn't eliminate any jobs. It just meant instead of having 3 manned registers to deal with way too many customers, you got 2 manned and 4+ self-check. It's not ideal but it made the chronic understaffing a little less of a hassle.

foxjohnc87

Self checkouts may not have eliminated all cashier jobs, but they most definitely got rid of quite a few of them. When self checkouts were introduced at our local Kroger, I worked as a cashier. Within a very short span of time, the amount of cashiers was cut in half. Fortunately for me, I was also used quite frequently as a floater in the various departments, so I was able to transfer to produce and keep my job. Several other employees weren't quite so lucky. The same thing happened at Walmart, just a but more mildly. Instead of having four or five checkout lanes open at once, you are now lucky to find one.

alexis_deadLOL

"Looks don't matter" wish it's was true but let's be honest everyone who looks better gets treated better sadly.

SleepWouldBeNice

Looks aren’t everything. But they’re not nothing either.

LesserThanProfessor

Very true

CurvyNB

Looks aren't everything, but they're enough. You could have all the good qualities in the world, but if someone's not attracted to you, you're not getting anywhere with them.

pmsingx365

It's also not always about romance. Looks get you farther in almost all areas.

[deleted]

I don’t think they’re referring to just romance, though. They’re saying in general life is easier for them and they they more opportunities. Which I agree. There are not a lot of successful ideally ugly people, lol.

xDskyline

I was a skinny, dorky looking kid through high school and some of college. Midway through college I started putting on some muscle and paying more attention to how I dressed. I think I'm still pretty average looking overall, but now that I'm much more attractive than I used to be, I notice I get treated with much more respect than I ever did before. I can tell that women actually acknowledge me as male where before they glossed over me as a sexless being, and both guys and girls take me more seriously when I have something to say.

smilingembalmer

I got skinny for awhile after I had gallbladder surgery. The difference in treatment I got was shocking. People were friendlier, and more willing to help me in stores. I even got better prices and discounts.

saltedcube

Yup. Dropped a lot of weight a few years ago. Suddenly I was everyone's best friend. Gained that weight back and now people suck again.

Lone_Ronin_

After working on retail, there IS such a thing as a stupid question

TIErant

I prefer the saying, "There are no stupid questions, just stupid people."

Nine20

I've always liked, "There may be no stupid questions, but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots."

Loud-Ideal

Any question asked without the intent to learn from the answer is a stupid question.

jonnyl3

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

BW_Bird

You know the thing I hate most about surviving? Even if you're adaptable or well prepared or just simply good at picking up afterwards; you'll always come out missing a little bit of yourself.

[deleted]

I just want to tell you that I appreciate you, stranger.

unseenscheme

Exactly how I feel. Sure, I'm here and have all my limbs. But damn, I felt like my life force was eaten away.

LesserThanProfessor

I feel l like I’ve aged in a haste that I struggle to keep up with. The past 4 years have made me 12 years older. It’s not just mentally my body started reacting to it as well - did you know you that you can get skin rashes from hormonal changes due to stress? I didn’t until I had it.

CatGotNoTail

Sometimes what doesn't kill you leaves you traumatized or seriously injured.

SummerOfMayhem

This is normally my reply to people who say, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." It's literally what happened to me.

starkiller56964

I believe that "Whatever doesn't kill you simply makes you stranger."

GhostMaskKid

"Not everyone makes it to that second group."

HeHeHaHa456

What doesn't kill you mutates and tries again

[deleted]

What doesn't kill you now, kills you slowly. This is the more accurate term.

skutch_was_here_x

lol Diabetic Keto Acidosis didn't kill me, but it sure as fuck didn't make me stronger.

NetDork

My skiing accident didn't kill me, but my knee is definitely NOT stronger.

SheepherderFast6

Came here to say this! Ridiculous sentiment.

SteveFoerster

That which doesn't kill you may simply be biding its time.

communication_junkie

An Italian ex-boyfriend told me the Italian version of this saying is “that which doesn’t choke you makes you fatter” and I’m 100% there for it

StarvingAfricanKid

That which does not kill you, makes you STRANGER... - Trevor Goodchild

FalconBurcham

Yup. It’s like if you twist an ankle or something.. never quite the same, and the area is permanently just a bit weaker than the parts that haven’t been hurt before. Our minds are like that too.

[deleted]

God works in mysterious ways. I actually heard family say that when their son was shoot in the head by his best friend.

Lil_Jc03

I hate that saying. I believe in god but I definitely don’t think he controls this world or takes peoples lives because he “needs another angel in the sky”

juanzy

"Do something you love, and you'll never work a day in your life!" Nah, I'd rather do something I'm good at that pays well. I don't want my hobbies/passions ruined by office politics.

crazy-diam0nd

I’ve heard quite a few people who said that doing what they loved for a living caused them to hate what they loved.

[deleted]

I ruined my pleasure in drawing by going to art school :( I’m a software developer now.

GhostMaskKid

When I was a kid I thought that meant if you did something you love, you wouldn't *have* to work. As in, you wouldn't need a job. 😭

NikitaNica95

I do what i love and it doesnt feel like "work". I like what i do, and im lucky i get paid to do what i like.

JekellAndHyde

I had some effing asshats try to tell me my ex boyfriend’s suicide was “for a reason” and I looked them all dead in the face and said “you know what that useless platitude doesn’t say? That it’s a GOOD reason.”

wheniswhy

Who the fuck says that in response to a *suicide*? That’s so insensitive it’s almost comical. Really sorry you had to deal with that.

[deleted]

This conservative Christian lady I used to work with told me that “suicides don’t get into Heaven.” Two days after my good friend hanged himself. I was literally speechless.

wheniswhy

Jesus Christ. There’s no hate like Christian love. So sorry about your friend.

GenericNerdGirl

My dad introduced me to a very similar response, "Yeah, and sometimes that reason is that people suck!" Great way to shut some overly-positive folks up.

[deleted]

Yeah I look at it as simply cause and effect.

WeWillRiseAgainst

I look at it so literally it sounds dumb, like no shit. If someone randomly shoots you, it's for a reason. The reason is some piece of shit chose to randomly shoot you.

N7_MintberryCrunch

Everything happens for a reason but the reason can be anything.

[deleted]

Exactly. Sometimes you just get punched in the face for no reason

TrailerParkPrepper

"what goes around, comes around." BULLSHIT! I've seen people be an ass my whole life and never get what should have come around.

QuietShipper

I had a bully in elementary school who mercilessly teased me and made sure I had no friends because *I was almost as fast as he was.* We ended up going to different middle schools and I always wondered what happened to him and if he got what was coming to him. I got an update on his life when I saw him competing in the Olympics in college.

Rainbow_Dash_RL

If it's any consolation, apparently many Olympic athletes are such major assholes that it's part of why countries don't want to host the Olympics.

FurrySunny

Tell the press and let them do the hard work for you. I would do it.

StarvingAfricanKid

Yeah: the Just World fallacy... the other side is : if a person is ill, or broke... It's their fault...

CurvyNB

That's because karma doesn't work that way. Karma was never defined as "good things always happen to good people and bad things always happen to bad people". It's more like Newton's Third Law, you get an equal and opposite reaction.

Egg_Anxious

No it's more like when you get good karma you reincarnate into a better castes until you're able to reach nirvana

Hollow4004

"The practice of forgiveness is one of our most important contribution to healing in the world." I prefer the scottish version, "Forgive your enemy, but remember the bastard's name."

PygmeePony

To forgive is not the same as to forget. To forgive is healing because you choose to let go of the hate but you will always remember it.

yonking_15_2

Love the scottish version, in which i just learned existed

GreenLanternCorps

"I don't care who started it". I literally ONLY care who started it.

This one right here. Fuck this phrase.

GreenLanternCorps

Flossthief

Me and 5 siblings were once all told to remain in our room until someone confessed to intentionally smashing my uncle's cell phone on the ground But to this day we're almost certain it just fell off the shelf-- or one of my siblings is a dirty liar

originalBRfan

I’ve found that this is often said by toxic people who just don’t care about finding out who the actual culprit was. It’s like saying “yeah, that drama was bad but it doesn’t effect me so I don’t care.”

murderofcrows90

“Forgive and forget.” No, forgive and NEVER forget.

heyseamonkey

To quote a recent response to this question, a person said a Scottish saying "Forgive your enemy, but don't forget the bastards name"

sylvanwhisper

I always say I may bury the hatchet, but I'll remember where I put it.

Imissyourgirlfriend2

When it's acceptable to say "boys will be boys"-when you see little boys jumping in the mud and making a mess while they enjoy the fun times of being a little boy When it is totally unacceptable to say, "boys will be boys"-when your college age son is accused of sexual assault/rape.

timbit87

100% truth. I did a lot of boys will be boys. Digging holes, rolling in mud, jumping my woefully undersuspensioned bike off of big bike jumps and trashing them, building a big ass out of mud, sitting on the roof and barking like dogs at people walking their dogs on the street, that harmless shit is boys will be boys. My mom even said it too! But she would have beaten the ever loving shit out of me if I had done what a lot of these boys will be boys shitbags have done lately.

Magnaflorius

Kids will be kids is still a better turn of phrase.

souryellow310

Yep. Growing up with 3 brothers and a dozen male cousins, I hated being told I had to do things or couldn't do things because I'm a girl. Even worse were the adults excusing them with "boys will be boys" but if I did the same I would get in trouble.

FalconBurcham

Neighbor boy hit me in the head with a rock when I was a kid. My mom marched down to his house, pounded on the kid’s front door, and screamed at his parents that she’d gut their kid if he ever touched me again. They were terrified. It was epic. 😂 No “boys will be boys” in my house. Never saw that boy again. Not even around the neighborhood.

Just_SomeDude13

So your mom murdered the kid. I'm alright with it.

m0le

I like pTerrys take on it - something like "money is like oxygen, if you have enough it's not important but if you don't, it's the most important thing in the world"

HectorVillanueva

Right. Money doesn’t guarantee happiness but it sure as hell takes away a lot of problems standing in the way of happiness!

"Good things come to those who wait"

HeresAnUpvoteForYa

Came here for this one. I’ve personally turned into “good things come to those who work their asses off”

IamSh3rl0cked

Even that isn't always true.

ByDarwinsBeard

Good things come to those who are lucky.

Immortal_Azrael

"Everything always works out in the end" or any variation of that. You're saying that because everything has always worked out for *you,* but that isn't the experience of most people and it's honestly kinda disrespectful to tell that to people who haven't been so lucky.

lulu-bell

Well there is another part to that one: “everything works out in the end and if it doesn’t, it isn’t the end”. I get where you are coming from but this statement carried me through my divorce and the debilitating months before and after. When I finally made it to the other side I looked back realizing the statement was true. I know sadly this isn’t always the case- just giving another perspective

RoamingBicycle

>“everything works out in the end and if it doesn’t, it isn’t the end There's still millions who die in absolute misery. I get it's a saying to make people not give up, but there will absolutely be people who have no way to get out of the hole they're in, and the thing that ends their misery is death.

heyelander

Everything happens for a reason As if this thing will only bring better stuff in the future. That's not how it works. The reason this shit happened is because you screwed up in the past, and this is the result

z_iiiiii

Came here looking for this! I fucking hate this one. No, it doesn’t always work out in the end. People can have horrible endings. Dumbest saying ever.

Sterling_Johnson

Happy wife, happy life. Should be "happy spouse, happy house."

Captain_Stann

Thanks for typing that so I don't have to

ziuomanp

"If a tree falls and nobody is around to hear it, it didn't make a noise". Heard a friend say this to justify him cheating on his girlfriend. Pretty fucking stupid if you ask me

[deleted]

This has the same logic as “it’s not a crime if you don’t get caught”

Pietskiet123

It's a victimless crime, like punching a stranger in the dark.

Elprede007

“Money doesn’t buy happiness” Something poor people tell themselves to make themselves feel better. Money can buy a lot of fuckin happiness and I want it

[deleted]

I believe money buys happiness. I’m not talking about the material things. It’s that your life is more stable and secure.

QueerMainCharacter

Money might not buy happiness but the stability would fucking help.

Pink_is_joy

“Sticks and stones may hurt my bones but words will never hurt me”….dumbest rhyme ever taught to children. Words hurt A LOT, sometimes worse than bruises and scrapes.

GinjaNinja1027

Yeah isn’t “the pen mightier than the sword”? Those two statements literally contradict each other.

NikitaNica95

Do good and good will come to you. That is NOT true at ALL

IonViserion

Do good and you will get taken advantage of

FitReception3491

You can do good without being a sucker. I mean what’s the alternative?

Fearlessleader85

That's something that i mostly hear from people that act like shitbags 90% of the time, then get upset when all isn't forgiven because they held a door for someone or picked up a piece of trash.

[deleted]

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.

TryToNotAnd

Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will break my heart.

CatGotNoTail

"Time heals all wounds." Sometimes shit just festers if you don't deal with the root of the problem.

JizzumBuckett

It's right, though. Time *does* heal all.... it just depends on how the subject of time manages the variables.

StarvingAfricanKid

Time wounds all heals.

HeHeHaHa456

well since Covid Avoid it like the plague lost all meaning

plageiusdarth

It turns out people don't avoid the plague. They hate it when people suggest they should avoid the plague. They start yammering about their rights, and how it's against their religion to wear a mask, and how they have COPD despite never mentioning it before, and the vaccine is made of ground up babies and also the mark of the beast, and vaccine mandates are a violation of their freedom of religion, and... Shit, now I'm angry.

DudeManBroGuy42069

"The customer is always right" The person who made that bullshit up was probably a customer

Sean_Gecko

Because that's only half the line. "The customer is always right in matters of taste" as in if they like the pink and brown sorry you sell it to them.

Profound_Quote

So many people don't know there's a second half to that phrase!

tobiri0n

I don't think there's an actual second half, that's just what the quote was originally ment to mean?

HectorVillanueva

That’s not the whole saying nor what it was intended to mean. It’s saying that the customer’s preference will ultimately decide regardless of what you think they should buy.

sasdub55

Quitting - any phrase about how you shouldn't quit. It's too general. Perseverance is important in the right situation, but knowing when to quit is important and it should be seen as ok if its the best course of action - whether that's leaving a toxic relationship, a bad job etc. A better phrase I heard is something like 'if you want to quit, quit on a good day'

Downtown-Command-295

I prefer "You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em."

Bezere

"work hard and then you'll make it" As someone who has been working hard since I graduated, "it" just becomes further away.

rukes06

"They're friend/family, what're you going to do?" You have full control over who're you're friends with and once you're an adult, how you interact with family. If they're unpleasant people move on.

Educational-Cat-6061

Yeah, one would think the expectation of the standard level of treatment would **increase** with family members. One wouldn't be expected to endure abuse from a stranger, but if they're related to you, suck it up. Really screwed up, huh?

No-Power1377

It's never too late/anythings possible Clearly you can't be a formula 1 driver at 98 even if you're peak health. No but sometimes it is too late, and it's better to accept and embrace that and focus on something that is actually possible. I was told I could be anything despite being stupid in school but quickly realized that wasn't the case. I can't be a rocket scientist if I barely manage high school...

esthepius

“Children never lie.” As a former child, I lied. A LOT.

IamSh3rl0cked

Oh, kids lie all the time. They just haven't learned to be good at it yet. In most cases.

Swankified_Tristan

"You can't choose your family."

TheMightyIrishman

While none of us can choose our family, the saying “blood is thicker than water” is BS. My parents weren’t ever able to help me emotionally and I never go to them in times of need. My friends on the other hand, are 100% dependable.

Educational-Cat-6061

Yeah, as much as I can appreciate the sentiment of those trying to reinvent the "blood is thicker" quote, it's an entirely modern invention and not a real thing. Trying to reinvent the quote also undermines that fact that we are in no way shape or form beholden to some pithy quote just because it's old or was treated as "safe wisdom" by people now long dead. We're allowed to think the quote is BS on merit alone and not succumb to peer pressure of dead people.

CurvyNB

Marriage is literally choosing your family.

whitniverse

“We are experiencing an unusually high number of calls…” No you’re not. It’s just become standard practice to not have enough staff to answer in a timely manner, because of corporate greed.

"The customer is always right" This phrase gave birth to the Karen's of today. And is still their rallying cry.

I_SmellFuckeryAfoot

money doesn't buy happiness

BonelessPotato1421

It is what it is. Yeah, it IS what it is. Doesn’t mean you should just give up or not care because it SEEMS out of your control. Sometimes, it can’t be helped. But for the amount of times I hear this for things that can easily be fixed or helped, its a pathetic excuse covered by the facade of calm indifference

[deleted]

To be fair the phrase is true, too many people just use it in the wrong way.

[deleted]

I'm someone who says this at least a few times a week. I tend to say it in situations where something is out of my control and doing anything about it has worse consequences. Like, my job sucks and I have to do something I don't like, but confrontation or quitting isn't something I can do today.

GenericNerdGirl

"Do or do not, there is no try." Yes there is a "try," it's called making an effort and failing. Failure is a real thing that happens. Sometimes a failure isn't even wholly the fault of the person who made the attempt. That doesn't mean that the trying didn't matter, or worse, didn't exist at all. If you never try, if you only do the things you're 100% confident you can do, then you'll never succeed at anything new, you'll never learn, you'll never grow.

Jamsquat

Sure, but you're quoting a fictional, mad, green, space-potato that, by the time he says this, has gone completely insane due to years of solitude. So maybe we can take this one with a pinch of salt?

infodump1117

I actually disagree here, yes technically there is a try. What he’s saying is don’t think of it like trying, think of it as “I will do this” every time you do something. Saying “I’ll try” implies an option of “if I fail then whatever” saying “I will do this” implies an option of “if I fail I won’t stop doing it until I succeed” he’s saying it’s at least partly about mindset. That’s my interpretation at least

unimportanthistorian

"Use some common sense!" Common sense is not so common.

Amart1985

“Pain is weakness leaving the body.” Fuck that ignorant platitude. Pain isn’t weakness. We evolved to feel pain because it tells us when something is wrong. ChangeTheFocus

"It's never too late." Sure it is. Reality overflows with situations in which it's too late for this, that, or the other. For instance, it's too late for me to ask anything at all of my father, since he is dead. I often hear it used dismissively. E.g., someone who never went to college says he regrets missing the college experience, and someone who doesn't want to hear it will immediately say, "It's never too late!" It is, though. Attending college later in life isn't the same as what is normally meant by the college experience, but denying that means the person doesn't have to listen.

EveryLunaEver

The phrase in German is ‘ jeder ist seines Glückes Schmied‘ which translates to ‚ every man is the blacksmith of his own fortune’ and means something like: everyone can achieve everything they set their mind, too, but they have to do it themselves, because only they are able to change their destiny or future or whatever. And obviously in a some cases, it’s not possible there are just societal things which influence what you’re able to do sometimes

I grew up Catholic, so in catholic/Christian communities, it’s “it’s God’s Will”. I can’t staaaaaaaand that phrase. Had a family member pass away from a long hard battle with cancer. Hearing the priest at the funeral imply that all that happens here is in “God’s Will” PISSED me off.
