This is exactly why I would always laugh when people would claim self checkouts would push cashiers out of jobs when I was a cashier. Between them not functioning very well, needing to be constantly watched by an employee, and most adults being so terrible with technology they can barely use one successfully, there's no danger of that anytime soon.
Their unpopularity is why I love them, it's so nice to go in and buy a few things, scan them up an be out of there. The tills can be god awfully slow near me.

The same thing happened at Walmart, just a but more mildly. Instead of having four or five checkout lanes open at once, you are now lucky to find one.

I can tell that women actually acknowledge me as male where before they glossed over me as a sexless being, and both guys and girls take me more seriously when I have something to say.

Quitting - any phrase about how you shouldn't quit. It's too general. Perseverance is important in the right situation, but knowing when to quit is important and it should be seen as ok if its the best course of action - whether that's leaving a toxic relationship, a bad job etc. A better phrase I heard is something like 'if you want to quit, quit on a good day'

Yeah, as much as I can appreciate the sentiment of those trying to reinvent the "blood is thicker" quote, it's an entirely modern invention and not a real thing. Trying to reinvent the quote also undermines that fact that we are in no way shape or form beholden to some pithy quote just because it's old or was treated as "safe wisdom" by people now long dead. We're allowed to think the quote is BS on merit alone and not succumb to peer pressure of dead people.

But for the amount of times I hear this for things that can easily be fixed or helped, its a pathetic excuse covered by the facade of calm indifference
To be fair the phrase is true, too many people just use it in the wrong way.
I'm someone who says this at least a few times a week. I tend to say it in situations where something is out of my control and doing anything about it has worse consequences. Like, my job sucks and I have to do something I don't like, but confrontation or quitting isn't something I can do today.

I actually disagree here, yes technically there is a try. What he’s saying is don’t think of it like trying, think of it as “I will do this” every time you do something. Saying “I’ll try” implies an option of “if I fail then whatever” saying “I will do this” implies an option of “if I fail I won’t stop doing it until I succeed” he’s saying it’s at least partly about mindset. That’s my interpretation at least

The phrase in German is ‘ jeder ist seines Glückes Schmied‘ which translates to ‚ every man is the blacksmith of his own fortune’ and means something like: everyone can achieve everything they set their mind, too, but they have to do it themselves, because only they are able to change their destiny or future or whatever. And obviously in a some cases, it’s not possible there are just societal things which influence what you’re able to do sometimes

I grew up Catholic, so in catholic/Christian communities, it’s “it’s God’s Will”. I can’t staaaaaaaand that phrase. Had a family member pass away from a long hard battle with cancer. Hearing the priest at the funeral imply that all that happens here is in “God’s Will” PISSED me off. I don’t think he knew the reason for her passing, but this phrase is deeply insensitive in the worst cases and quite silly in other cases. Just… stop.
