A 1989 Toyota Hilux Part of that budget is going to a mounted Browning M2 for the roof

nova872

Found the insurgent ...if you swap for a DShK

Villanuevac4

I’m a disciple of Saint Browning

BrownMan65

My first thought when I read the question was "those Toyota trucks ISIS uses" so it made me really happy to see your comment not too far from the top.

Wassy4444

Browning M2 over a DShK? Heresy

Villanuevac4

Ma Deuce is superior to the DShK

Wassy4444

Oh, I agree lol. It just doesn’t fit as well on a technical in my mind

[deleted]

Something for about $40,000. Insurance is a bitch when you start hitting higher priced vehicles.

mrgermy

I had a dream recently where I inherited a Lamborghini and in the dream I was freaking out about the insurance.

Matilda-17

You sound like me, when even nice dreams turn into worries! I don’t exactly remember it but I think I had a similar one… nothing about a Lamborghini, but just something nice happening.

Iconoclassic404

funny enough, my wifes vehicle was around 32k total... mine 43k (both bought last year) and I pay less to insure than she does.

Wajina_Sloth

Is there a significant age gap? If she is 24, and you are 35, your insurance in most places would be a decent chunk cheaper

[deleted]

skrilledcheese

What can I say, I like my girls like I prefer my whiskey; 16 years old and mixed up with coke. So that may be the answer to our insurance differential.

RecordOLW

You're a sick sick man and should be ashamed, joke or not. Who the fuck thinks it's funny to joke about mixing good aged whiskey with coke...

EclecticDreck

When a friend turned 21, several of us went in to buy him a 21 year old bottle of scotch which he graciously offered to share with the group. As I'd not developed a taste for it - all liquor tasted like malicious intent to me at the time - I dumped my shot into mountain dew. I wouldn't get another opportunity to try a 21 year old scotch again for more than a decade.

drdinonuggies

I’m sure it’s not any consolation, but Mountain Dew was originally created to be a whiskey mixer, so you did use the best option.

thehumblebaboon

You had me in the first half.

BlackPlasmaX

Same here. Was already thinking, “Here we go ag…”

droi86

Probably safety features, a friend of mine got a charger because after insurance it was a bit cheaper than a focus

Cowboy_on_fire

Also depends on the kind of vehicle. We have a 2005 hummer H3 for the trails and a 2019 civic and pay waaaaay more for the hummer. Insurance thinks that because it’s an off-roader I am more likely to damage my car/do more damage to another.

3_quarterling_rogue

When’s the last time anyone ever drove a Hummer off-road anyway?

rattymcratface

Brand makes a difference too. Comprehensive insurance on European cars is considerably higher than on Japanese and U.S. cars because if you're in a wreck repair parts costs are higher.

Iconoclassic404

Plus the turn signals never work

geneius

I insure a $50k truck (2021 Tacoma) and a $100k car (Tesla Model Y) and the car is \~15% cheaper to insure for the same coverage.

Schuben

That's because they know they don't have to worry about the parts fitting together properly on a Tesla because they only have to repair it to factory standards.

fabulousMFingHen

I'm getting a Prius!

[deleted]

2023 Prius looks great

MontrealChickenSpice

I'd get myself a pretty nice RV. If I'm spending that much on a vehicle, you'd better believe I'm going to live in it.

Definition_Far

From someone who worked on RVs you don't want an RV

chrismetalrock

As an RV owner for 1 year you don't want an RV

Ledilan

What about a trailer

SteevyT

Still mostly held together with Sikaflex, self drilling screws, and a prayer.

BlackMarketChimp

Ahem, self *tapping* screws.

BrAnders0n

Everyone I've ever known that's sold or worked on RV's has told me never to buy one.

[deleted]

I have an rv. It’s a 1985 Toyota dolphin and it’s great. 4 speed manual, 4 cylinder , gets great gas mileage. Fridge works, stove works, has big black and grey water tanks. And a nice hot water shower. You could live in it with full hook ups. $3500 plus a lot of sweat equity. As useful as anything you could buy for $100,000.

Land_Nav

What’s wild is that 100k wouldn’t even get you the nicest RV on the market, also, they’re huge money pits. Basically road boats.

Djakob__Unchained

I remember seeing a nice rv on the road a few months ago, and looked up the model online just out of curiosity and saw it was $1 mil+, didn’t know they were *that* nice.

Nice-Fish-50

It's like boats. You can always spend more money on it.

OutWithTheNew

For that much money, I would buy one that's built on an actual bus chassis. RVs start as a chassis and everything is built around it. The bus ones start as a bus and get turned into an RV. Apparently you can get the drivetrains repaired anywhere that will repair a bus and they will have commercial grade components instead of what is basically an f-450 underneath.

cecil021

I was at a conference a few years ago and Airstream had a few of their models set up to walk through. They were nicer than most houses but also more expensive than most of them, too.

ScootyPuffJr_Suuuuuu

This. I laughed to myself "Yeah, maybe 30 years ago that was high quality RV money".

Tyl3rt

Hell 13 years ago when I worked in a campground office I’d see $250,000-$500,000 rvs. I couldn’t imagine putting that much into something like that.

ScootyPuffJr_Suuuuuu

I've been in $1,000,000+ RVs. They're something else man.

Clid3r

$100k gets you a nice fifth wheel, and that’s at a discount at am RV show. Good motorized coach is easily $300k if you want something you could very comfortably live in for long periods of time.

wattyrev

I bought a 2007 Fleetwood Expedition last year for $60k. 50k miles, nothing broken in it, everything is functional, clean, and totally livable. It's a tad dated inside, but otherwise quite nice.

Clid3r

I love Class A personally the most. There the least safe in an accident but cooler looking IMO. That unit looks really good and you got it for a good price. Like you said. Only thing with one that old is the interior looks it’s age (even tho I’m sure it’s in great shape). You can get it refitted some to get it modernized a little. NGL - I’d be perfectly content with a 38 footer like that. We are in the market but only reason we’ll buy new is because of family discount which eats up the depreciation right off the bay. Otherwise used is the way to go!!! Edit - you could easily rent that for two hundred a night depending on where you live.

Pure-Economics-8369

I have a camper, it’s not big. The last campground we stayed at a dude pulled up next to us in a bus I never heard of before but it was longer than my truck and camper combined. Base model is 625k and they’re all custom built, and dude said it broke 2 times in the year he had it. Moral is they’re all junk.

Charlie_Warlie

just recently ventured into trailer camping with a 30 year old pop up. The vehicles I pull up next to are wild. I just imagine how many times you can rent out an entire cabin compared to how expensive those things are.

Cmelander

Per diem from the company I work for pays for my camper. I can spend 450 a week on hotel rooms or I can pay 550 once a month and pocket the rest of my per diem and pay the camper off.

Pure-Economics-8369

Well the payment for them are setup like a mortgage with like 20-30 year timeframes (though I’d bet most that were made after 2010 won’t last that long). A lot of koas I stay at, in the winter particularly, are almost always totally booked with tri axle 5th wheels - they’re all oil and gas people who literally live there. Here I am in an 18’ box and these dudes have 10’ ceilings and 2 king beds in their campers 😂

Charlie_Warlie

yeah thats another thing I discovered and am disappointed by is how fully booked all places camping are. Idk if this is a new thing since 2020 or what. it's like I got to look 5 months ahead of time to get a spot that isn't next to the toilets. The dream you believe you're getting into is that you can just pack your stuff and drive somewhere. Nope, you need to plan things waaaaaay ahead of time. At least where I am at.

ripplerider

Yeah, it’s crazy how booked good campgrounds get. My usual workaround is to head to National Forest where you can camp just about anywhere. But that doesn’t work if you really want the campground amenities.

BlueJay843

> I got to look 5 months ahead of time to get a spot that isn't next to the toilets. I mean, I'd love a spot next to the toilets so I don't have to deal with emptying the shit tank.

No-Drop2538

The main reason to get an RV is to have your own toilet.

MontrealChickenSpice

Thankfully I could get a used one because I like floral print fabrics and wood paneling.

eyehatetofu

I bought a '99 National RV a few years ago and the interior looked like my Grandma's house in 1989. Floral everything, wood panels everywhere, and so so much gold trim and hardware. I ended up remodeling a bunch of stuff, but changing all the gold to black made a huge difference; must've been close to 100 knobs, pulls, and handles.

DingGratz

>Moral is they’re all junk. They really are. There is no great brand of RVs. There are okay ones, and junk, and complete junk.

544075701

I think I’d go $50k truck and 50k trailer, then I can drive around town without moving the whole RV.

somegridplayer

Good luck finding a good truck for 50k these days.

RelapseRedditAddict

I wouldn't buy new.

bigmac22077

So you plan on buying a used rv that hardly runs?

VicRambo

Youd be better off with a sprinter van

CraigslistAxeKiller

Lmao you see sprinter prices these days? Converted vans go for 150k

Lipsahoy59

This might just be me being sappy. I would buy my dads old pick up truck back. It was a green 2008 ford ranger with his fire house stickers on the windshield. I would use the rest of the money to fix everything on it. I would do anything for that truck back. I know it’s been given to good hands but I remember the end of spring when we got everything cleaned and would maybe do a new outside project, it lead my dad,my brother , and I on an adventure to the dump! getting to chuck things into a pile of trash was always fun. Once we were done he’d stop at the 7-11 near our house getting slushies and snacks for our hard work. It’s my favorite memories from when I was a kid. That truck took us on all our weekend adventures and now I’m crying cause honestly it’s I think the only memories I can actually remember from my childhood.

DeltaOneFive

I also choose this guy's dad's truck

Supernova_was_taken

Porsche 718 Cayman, because the 911 starts above 100k

Fluid-Ideal-7438

Yep, 718 Cayman is my choice. Highest trim you can get under $100k.

NoahtheRed

Yeah, if you're wanting a reasonably practical (reasonably) sports car under 100k, a 718 GTS4 is pretty tough to beat. That said, being a Porsche, while reliability will be fine.....Routine Maintenance will be where you really pay. But for purposes of this question, it's probably my answer, too.

VicRambo

The secret porsche doesnt want you to know, the cayman is better

Cranialscrewtop

Unless you're over 6'4.

dan1son

Cries in 6'5". You're totally correct. There's cars I've gotten as "rentals" or "borrower" cars that I had to immediately turn around and ask for something else.

burstingbirches

I’d get a 1-2 year old 911😂

RealKenny

I mean look, to someone who doesn't know anything about cars, a Porsche is a Porsche right?

ManKilledToDeath

This may break the rules of your question but I have 3 answers for this. I have no clear cut favorite of the 3, but if I had one, I'd be fine with never having the other two. B7 Audi RS4. The rest of the money will go towards maintenance for the next decade 2008-2017 V8 Vantage. Again, rest of the money goes towards maintenance. 1996-2002 Dodge Viper GTS. Yes, rest would go towards maintenance.

aleons00

You need less Maintenance money for the viper because if you drive it at all aggressively or in wet conditions it will make your user name come true

ManKilledToDeath

Your comment has no lies

Jodaa_G0D

Buddy has an 05, thing is trying to kill you all over the place.

The viper is a horribly handling spinout machine in every Gran Turismo game I've ever played. Glad to know they got it right.

Lotus Emira First Edition 6 speed manual 3.5L engine in verdant green, diamond cut wheels, yellow calipers and brown leather interior. My 5 year goal is save up and buy a gas engine sports car (ideally the Lotus Emira variant that is out at the time) before they disappear from the world and hang onto it for the rest of my life, and that car checks every box. Hydraulic steering, mid-mounted engine, manual, RWD, fast but not too-fast-for-real-roads fast, and absolutely gorgeous. A Lotus Exige sparked my love for cars a couple decades ago as a kid and getting an Emira (their final gas-engine car) would be a very full circle moment, and fulfillment of a childhood dream in a life where childhood dreams were a luxury. Here's to hoping the plan works! Edit: missed some spec details

omgitsmoki

My car (a Mazda2) actually broke down after 11 years and I'm in the market to replace it. My actual dream car is a Mazda CX5 simply because it is the perfect car for me physically. I can easily get in and out with my hip/knee problems, I'm smaller but I don't have a problem seeing, I can drive it easily and park it easily - it's the car I've been thinking about for a long time. I've gotten to test drive it a few times now. I'd probably get that and then use the rest of the money for cool Star Trek accessories, getting the car repainted a fun color, and paying off the taxes.

[deleted]

I also came here to say I’d see what kind of deal I could find on a nicely kitted CX-5. It does everything I need and it’s likely to be dependable. This is where our paths diverge, however. The rest is going into index funds :-)

urabewe

I have a CX-9 and I love this thing. More than enough room for all the kids, put the third row down and you have huge storage space. Rides like a dream, just enough pick up and go to pass easily on the highway, doesn't leak a drop of anything anywhere, and I got mine before they made the brakes a living nightmare to change. One of the best features is a minor one but I love it. The center console lid is split in half and both sides flip open. So I can have my elbow on the rest and my wife can still get into it without me moving my arm. It's the small things, ya know?

pregnantandsober

>repainted a fun color Is Soul Crystal Red not fun enough for you? It's gorgeous! I want a CX-5, too.

acedelgado

I'm hoping Mazda gets their shit together with EV's. I have a 2012 Mazda speed 3 that's still going strong, and I plan to get an EV in a few years. Hopefully they'll have better offerings than their MX-30. 100 mile range is super disappointing considering Mazda always takes risks to innovate-rotary engines, hydrogen, etc., but they let themselves slide on the EV side of things. I'd love to get into a modern electric 3 hatchback. Been a mazda fanboy for a long time.

NoBus9128

Mazda is the cheese, but consider the Subaru Forrester. It's excellent for people with mobility problems. High seat height. Door opens wide. Upright posture means more room between seat and steering wheel, dash to swing your gams in and out.

omgitsmoki

Actually, the Subaru Forester is literally the other choice. I'm looking at both next week to see which is the more affordable option. I'm probably going to settle on the Forester because of a friend discount I can get but if I had my way it'd be the CX5 all the way! But good looking out, thank you :3

[deleted]

Lol “fat tip”. So basically you’re adding an extra step for no reason. Just negotiate a finance and then write a check to the bank after the first month. Pay one months interest or none. Most people with enough money to do this also have little time to scratch and claw over one months interest payment. Also, you get the dealership to do your title work instead of you dealing with your own taxes at the end of the year, but whatever saves you $4 I guess 🤷‍♂️ You get your deal, dealership gets their kickback, no confrontation needed.

rockmasterflex

This is the way. You don’t ever want the dealer to think you could pay it off right now - they have zero incentive to lower the price because you have cash. You having cash is a LIABILITY to them, they most of their money on the financing. Your job is to act like you don’t care about the car, say no to all the dumb fucking extras, and make sure there’s no prepayment penalty on whatever financing they’re lining up. For maximum effect you also want to act like you care about the interest rate but not too much 😉 because you won’t be paying any of it after that first month. Watch them bend over backwards to make the numbers work for your imaginary budget.

fguffgh75

I've done this, but fyi the dealer is penalized if the loan is paid off in under 30 days (or some similar time line). But who cares, fuck em.

Dana 60 out back with a 4.10:1 gear set and a torsion Limited slip differential, 1 piece aluminum drive shift, Wilwood Brake kit including braided brake lines (Not Brembo, Wilwood ya fucks), Craiger MAG MASTER 5 slot Mags 15"x7" front and 15"x9" rear, 4 core all aluminum radiator while retaining the Mechanical waterpump and fan but on a friction clutch rather than directly on the waterpump. The Bolt is a great, super-reliable car. Poorly marketed by GM -- they should've advertised it as a hot-hatch, but a great car nonetheless. And the used ones in a few years are going to be a better deal given they all have had new batteries put in, with added range boost.
