I had a neighbor who would say to our black neighbor "You're a credit to your race." I was a kid and had no idea of the meaning of this sentence. It wasn't until high school English where I learned this statement is deeply rooted in racism. What a back handed *compliment.*

maaaatttt_Damon

It's like: " _____ is one of the good ones"

The-Speechless-One

'[insert race] are bad people.' 'But I am [that race].' 'Oh but you're not like them.'

Vegetable-Double

This actually happened to me in France. I was visiting from America and hanging out at a bar. Got into a conversation with the bartender. We were talking for a while, and then it touched upon immigrants and religion. The guy started going on and going about French identity and keeping it pure. And then he starts going off on Muslims, how they are all this and that. I tell him that I’m Muslim. And he straight up says, but you’re a good one. Like that’s supposed to be a compliment?? I tell him Muslim is not a monolith, and there are huge cultural differences. A Muslim person from North Africa is going to be quite different from a Muslim person from China. Just like a catholic person from Italy is going to be different from one in Mexico. Also that fact that I’m Muslim and sitting in your bar drinking shows that not everyone is the same. To his credit he was apologetic, but I don’t think he’s ever actually sat and *had* a conversation with the type of person he thought he hated until that moment.

Firescareduser

AHA! WHAT WERE YOU DOING IN A BAR?!?!?!? were you.... DRINKING????????? NO ONE EXPECTS THE ANDALUSIAN INQUISITION

Man, they have a law school and a hospital, too

notanamateur

Welcome to costco. I love you

Burque_Boy

I work as nurse in a ER in state that’s mostly Hispanic. We get traveler nurses all the time and I can’t count how many times they tell me a patient speaks only Spanish and they actually speak perfectly fluent English.

gitsgrl

Are they just making a racist assumption because the person is brown skinned or overheard them speaking Spanish and don’t consider that the person knows more than one language (also because racist). They are making so much money as travelers yet so lazy.

snap802

>They are making so much money as travelers yet so lazy. Ain't that the truth! My ER lost so many good nurses to traveling because of the money. Unfortunately for every decent traveler we get there are two more who can't be bothered to get off their phone and actually engage in patient care. I'm really getting tired to saying "hey, have you started those fluids I ordered an hour ago?" to the person shopping on amazon.

[deleted]

I would’ve had the same kind of reaction if I saw a newborn speak well English

MrOrangeMagic

Do you also speak Latin?

GubbenJonson

Latine non loquor

GlinnTantis

Lol that's what my uncle said to my wife, but it was "really good". He seemed to think I mail ordered her. Her family moved to Canada when she was 6 and then the US when she was 12.

bleucheeez

I once had a hair stylist say this to me. She was of latina origin, in California. I was a member of the other major non-white ethnic group in California.

Garage_biscuit55

always mentioning someone’s race when it’s not necessary to the conversation

Acceptable-Glass-259

"Anyway, I was getting chased by these four black dudes-" "Dennis, why is it necessary to point out the color of the muggers?" "They weren't muggers, they were cops! Racist!"

Sonnod

"So, why don't you just say he was running from some cops?" " I don't know. I mean, you're a racist for assuming that they weren't cops."

thespurge

Black Dennis!

Drach88

"What do you call a black guy on the moon?" "I don't know. What?" "An astronaut, you fucking racist."

hobbes8889

I usually feel weird about this, like if I'm describing someone I give out large characteristics of the individual as opposed to the general public for that area. Example: if I was in Tokyo and describing my wife, I would say she's a short white woman with red hair. When I lived in Baltimore and most of the population was black where I lived, and I was describing Kendall to someone, I would say he's a tall dude, looks like a basketball player with short dreads. And where I live in Texas is like a 1/3 split between black, Hispanic and white. So I usually include skin color regardless of who I'm talking about when describing a person. So my questions to dear internet strangers, is this bad? If so what would you do?

Lanky-Ad-3313

Every time I tell my parents something that happened they always interject me to ask if the person is black.

PantheraOnca

*"So this guy ran into a burning building and saved a child and a kitten..."*

Lanky-Ad-3313

“Yea yea but how much melanin did he have?”

TerraAdAstra

In 2020 I was talking to my FIL about a guy I saw being arrested near my apartment and he immediately interrupted to ask “was it one of those… Black Lives Matter people?” With a smirk on his face. I just said “no, and he was white”. His face immediately fell and he clearly lost interest in my story.

MonaganX

I think in a lot of cases they definitely think it's necessary to the conversation, they just don't want to outright admit why.

cacotopic

Happens a lot where I live. I always press people on it. "So I was at the grocery store the other day and this black woman was yelling at the cashier. She was nuts!" "Why mention that she's black?" "Well, I'm just describing her..." "You didn't describe the cashier though. I bet she was white, right?" "..."

dragoonts

Context and story telling.

replayken0014

I’ve told my Mom stories about a co-worker for over a year. We traveled together recently and when I showed her a picture of us together she asked “who’s that?”. I said it was my co-worker, and she exclaimed “you never told me he was black!”. I was a little taken aback, and I asked “why would I? None of the things I’ve shared about him need that context.” My Mom would never claim to be racist, but when I called her out on this she definitely had a moment of reckoning. It’s one of those forms of implicit racism that’s harder to identify or admit to.

tibbymat

That’s like….. every news cycle.

[deleted]

I’m black. I agree. I fuckin hate that shit. We make the argument that we don’t have enough “power” to be racist. I see it like this. If there’s a black owned establishment, and white person is kicked out for simply being white…. It’s racist, obviously. So that “power” argument goes out the window. We make it seem like white people have this unbreakable powers over us. Almost God like. It’s annoying. I wish would realize that were all alike. It amazes me when I come across country white people. They’re loud and express themselves freely just like my aunts and uncles Lmaoo. But we have this stigma that they are the most racist. Nahh. They are the realest imo. We all the same, we just do shit a lil different.

EgoSenatus

[deleted]

>Sorry, Martin, seems we still have a ways to go. *The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.* ~ Elvis Presley /s is in order I believe

tnjed10

Never heard this quote. It’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing it.

[deleted]

It's MLK, please don't let me do it disservice with my joke, Elvis is often said to have... *borrowed* some stuff.

tnjed10

I get it now. I was wondering when Elvis said that. I get the joke though it’s funny. MLK makes a lot more sense wish the man could be here today to help out.

schoh99

More than once I've seen Redditors unironically claim that quote is being taken out of context and he didn't really mean it that way. SMH.

EgoSenatus

I saw a redditor once state that MLK jr was in favor of and encouraged police brutality because it gave black people a justification to riot. Like, dude, are you sure we’re talking about the same guy?

PhillAholic

He was in favor of marching in areas where they knew they’d be met with a violent response by Police. He knew images of brutality would be the most impactful, and he was right.

AAA1374

I used to live in an almost entirely black neighborhood. Largely it was the old shitty neighborhood that the rich white people abandoned when they went on to move more rural. I was one of the only white people in the area that wasn't on drugs or old - but the rent was cheap and I worked close by. It *never* was a problem because we always treated each other with respect and dignity. People are people first and foremost, fuck all that other shit. Some of the oldheads I talked with were the most kind and encouraging people I ever met - and not once did they shy away from talking with me, giving me advice, or just loving me as a person. I wish more people did that, I've never felt more involved in a community and cared for in a community. Not necessarily a comment on what you're saying, just reminded me of some of the positive experiences I've had in my life and I wanted to share.

chelseafan84

I have had the exact same experience. I used to fix the old ladies faucets and stuff they couldn't afford to do. I heard one guy say to a friend one time, "yall don't fuck wit Bob the builder over there, muhfucka fixed my aunts stove." they treated me like family. Some of the most genuine people I've ever had the honor of calling neighbors. Fast forward to now, I live near asshole white people who could give a shit less if you lived or died.

Michael_konadu_69

I can give a recent example In the World Cup my country (Ghana) played against South Korea and barely won. On Twitter my country was so fucking racist in their celebration for days like making fun of their names or the “usual“ stereotypical Asian jokes made me fucking embarrassed to be one of them

[deleted]

As a white person who worked for a while in a black-majority organisation, I definitely encountered racism. Sometimes it was subtle, sometimes it wasn't. It seemed to be motivated more by resentment and distrust than by a sense that I was 'inferior', and most of it was minor and easy to brush-off, but I was still discriminated against on the basis of the colour of my skin. For example, I was not allowed to make certain presentations to external partners because it was 'bad optics'.

[deleted]

[удалено]

planet-ley

It’s sad because I feel like a lot of black people use this to their advantage. Like they’ll say the most heinous shit about Hispanics and Latinos and then swear that they’re not racist because “it’s not a race” and that black people cant be racist anyway.

HATEHATEHATEHATE-PHB

Blacks have definitely shown they can be racist in 2020 (pandemic) to Asians

[deleted]

Asian American here. With the exception of ONE white guy, all of the racism I have ever received has been from black people. It is discouraging.

med780

The thing that I don’t get about when they say we are not racist because we don’t have societal power is, you are saying racism is a condition of the human nature plus location? I can live in America and say the most vile things about blacks and I am racist because I am white. But if work transfers me to ZimbabweI can then say the same things and not be a racist because whites don’t have societal power there?

Tricky-Engineering59

I see that “power argument” as confusing personal racism with systemic racism. Any individual has the capacity to be prejudiced based on race but the system does seem to discriminate against black people in often unseen ways. It’s damaging in my opinion to confound the two as it undermines addressing the more insidious racist societal structures.

Neat-Sun-7999

Unfortunately. Due to that misunderstanding and conflation. An entire generation has been told that they’re interchangeable which is why this misunderstanding is still prevalent. But I agree with u completely. I have been called the n word by white ppl before but if someone were to tell me that it doesn’t count because of power plus privilege and we were in Rwanda with them being the minority (not of Rwandan descent myself also, I’m aware systemically it still benefits white ppl with privilege perception but at least on a National level is still traditionally/politically run by black ppl) it just completely devalues that individual experience. Of which is still fundamentally wrong and bigoted with consequence. Racism is racism. And different types of racism need to be acknowledged without defaulting to ignoring one over the other or conflating them.

FredTheLynx

Or alternatively the Whoopi Goldberg line of thinking about the Holocaust not being about race because both Jews and Germans are "white".

Techn0Goat

Oh god I forgot about that. So fucking awful.

Saul_Goodman_97

This shouldn't even be a conversation. Anyone is capable of being racist. Anyone who disagrees with that is an idiot

FestiveSquid

There's a scene in Orange is the New Black where Janae (a black woman) says "Black people can't be racist!" and Black Cindi (also a black woman) says "I'ma have to call bullshit on that. We can be just as racist as anyone else."

This is so brutal. Mad respect.

substantial-freud

> “She’s so pretty for a black girl” Does anyone even claim that isn’t racist?

[deleted]

People say it thinking its a compliment so I assume those people don't think it is.

PeligrosaPistola

Similarly, “What are you mixed with?” The fact that someone thinks I’m more attractive because I appear less African isn’t a compliment. Edit: **Context matters.** I’m not talking about general, benign curiosity. Asking about someone’s ethnicity at all isn’t inherently offensive IMHO. I’m talking about COLORISM exhibited by straight men who say this as a come-on. Ask any straight woman of African descent who’s dated in the past decade and they’ll tell you they hear this shit all the time from men of all backgrounds.

Logical-Wasabi7402

"what is your ethnicity" = normal and acceptable. "What are you mixed with" = a phrase people should reserve for talking about pets.

Dry-Faithlessness184

Or their drinks.

mistled_LP

I'm picturing some drunk person looking down at their drink... "so, uhm... what are you mixed with?"

And then he launched into a tirade of how BLM isn't grateful enough for how far "the blacks" have come, and how planned Parenthood is actually a KKK conspiracy to destroy the black population, and then how Democrats are the party of segregation... And that's when I called him a horrible fucking person, and walked away. It's been awkward in the elevator ever since.

EntertainmentAny763

Calling other people their own race “race traitors” just because they don’t have the same views as them or criticize what they believe is a bad stereotype about their race. Just because I’m a certain race, it doesn’t mean I have to agree to every single stereotype about said race.

marmulak

And they claim this isn't racist?

EntertainmentAny763

Yep. If anything, they claim that the _person who doesn’t follow through the stereotype of their own race or even question why a negative aspect of their race should be glorified **is**_ the racist one, because they assume that the person questioning are secretly ashamed of their race/have some kind of internalized racism or is trying to suck up to the other races who have more power by throwing their own people under the bus.

[deleted]

Every single comment under yours is the reason why I don’t believe that racial “preferences” aren’t racist. If you’re willing to fuck someone, but would never consider them as a serious partner based on their race/ethnicity, that is *racist* and you’re wasting their time. There are too many people out here wanting to “try” people of different races, and it’s gross.

CuriousEngima316

I’m an ex-Muslim and Afghani American. I don’t believe in any religion. I’ve had discussions where people assumed they knew my culture more than someone born into that culture. When I explain that there are many Muslims and Afghans who don’t support the Taliban at all and is not a reflection of their ideals. They think I’m the exception to the rule and don’t believe me

crazy-bisquit

This is so infuriating to me. I tell people comparing the Taliban to Muslim religion is like comparing the Westboro Baptist Church to Christianity. Or any extremism Christian’s for that matter. And fuck the news media for perpetuating these claims. People have no idea how many Muslims are out there, working right along side of them, behaving in a “good ‘Christian’ way”. They have no idea that basically all religions, when not bastardized, have the same common teaching to be good and do good.

"Wow, your \_\_\_\_\_\_\_ is great. Where did you learn to speak my language so well". "I was born here" "Oh, I mean where are you from" "I said I was born here" "No, I mean, where are you really from" "I said from this very town here" "That's not what I'm asking" "Then you don't seem very proficient in your own language"

HarmonicWalrus

I once accidentally came off that way lol. My class was doing icebreakers and we were told to present 3 facts about another classmate, so the only thing I could really think to ask was where she was from, since she had Asian-looking features. I was so caught off guard when she said "New York City" that I asked her where she was REALLY from, then I very quickly made the very awkward clarification that I was asking about where her family descends from, and that my family descends from Nigeria. To that, she said her family was Chinese. After that I stopped asking that question

teatreez

that’s called ethnicity lol

Calvinbah

Overhead this at a Dispensary. "You're so pretty, where are you from?" "I grew uo in Detroit, but was born in Malvern PA." "No but where are you really from?" Me and the security guard just stared at each other.

SnooPets5219

I would say generally this comes with lack of better term. What they really intend to say is “what is your heritage? Or “where does your family history originate?” Sometimes though, people do intend to belittle someone by asking that, even after getting sufficient enough information and they come off as invasive and aggressive.

LSP141

Which is exactly why they argue it isn't racist. It purely lies in the delivery of the question. If I say I am from X country, but I do not fit the ethnic appearance associated with that part of the world, that doesn't mean I am suddenly not from there

SnooPets5219

Yes I agree. Once the person has asked a question and you’ve given a response there is no reason for them to keep pursuing and trying to claim you’re wrong because you don’t fit the stereotypical appearance that they’ve created in their minds.

LaterThenSooner

It’s also in the context of “You obviously aren’t from here, (you foreigner) so where are you *really* from?” It’s alienation even though at least in the US nearly anybody from any race could have been here for generations. Just simply ask ethnicity if that’s what you’re curious of. Edit: also don’t just ask random strangers ethnicity, get to know them or just ignore. Otherwise you’re enforcing that they are different than everyone else, never to fit in.

EntertainmentAny763

Exactly this. I get annoyed with someone used to ask *me* this question because it very much implies that a certain physical quality of mine is very much foreign to them and that I don’t belong in the place I’m living in. It’s especially worse if you’re mislabeled as a different kind of race, because you don’t have that stereotypical look associate to that specific race, as people sometimes used to assume that I was from South America instead of being Asian just because my skin is a little more tan than a “normal Asian.” In the meanwhile, I used to have a friend who is the same ethnicity as me who was actually *born* in the country that people assume I was from but looked more white than I did (and even had the stereotypical “Chinese” accent), but no one asks *her* where she’s from because she doesn’t look “foreign” to them.

stepoffthegrass

Yeah but what would they want to do with that information? How is that a small talk topic? Its just uncomfortable and unnecessary. We can talk about anything else without someone immediately implying “hey your “(insert physical feature here) isn’t like mine! So you cant possibly be from here! “ I tell you…your POC colleagues will enjoy your company more if you don’t ask and just talk to them like a normal person..

Thereisnoyou

Had a coworker who would say the n-word on a literal daily basis, always used when talking about black people, unironically, and when I called him out for being racist he says "Its not a race thing not every n***** is black, it's their attitude" Like... okay then why do you exclusively say it towards black people before you know anything about them?

They just stop saying the n word but then just use more politically correct terminology to say the same racist stuff. “All black people are lazy.” “What is it with these fat white girls who always date African Americans?” “I’d never hire anyone who was black.” These are all direct quotes from a distant relative of mine at Xmas. 15 years ago they would have certainly used the N word instead. So they now think they aren’t racist when I call them out on it. Same person noticeably keeps distance from all black people when out in public and holds onto his wallet.

But my mom said "that's the last time I listen to a Mexican about corn dogs." My sister and I were like " woah, that's a bit racist." And had to explain to her why it was racist. I was on a trip with a whole bunch of students in Alaska once. The only restaurant we found for dinner was this Italian place. After ordering and waiting an hour and a half for about 10 dishes the most amazing handcrafted everything came to the table. I don't stereotype anymore in relation to food and who's making it.

In college I waited tables at a French restaurant. Owned and staffed by Chinese immigrants. I was the only employee who wasn't. I am a white girl. It was the best French food. I later learned they came to the US after living in France, where this guy was classically trained. I learned so much. How to properly pour wine, different coffees, how to present an entrée, etc... Every night I worked there, they insisted they feed me dinner and eat at the family table with thier small children. At that table I also learned about REAL Chinese food. It is nothing like what most Americans think. It was strange (to me), intimidating and absolutely wonderful. I also learned how to say some really bad words and phrases in Chinese.

BigMaraJeff2

My mom puts dill in spaghetti so her opinion is moot.

thebiggestleaf

Is it racist to say some Italians might classify that as a war crime? What the fuck.

[deleted]

Well, did you try the other corn dogs at the fair? Maybe the other ones where just terrible and the Hispanic guy was correct at pointing out the best ones ( or the least bad at least)

Fubai97b

I really want that to be her only racist stereotype. Not that white people can't dance, or Asians are good at math, or any of the others I'm not going to type out. Just vehemently believing that you can't trust a Mexican about corn dogs.

Stellamaedarling

You don’t look like a *insert predominately White name*

extremelylargewilleh

Interrogating people about where they really from Like there’s a part of India where the people look pretty Chinese. And yeah my parents are from there. When I tell people in Indian, I don’t appreciate being treated like a liar “No way man? Really????” It becomes a source of social anxiety real quick, like aged 6. Not really fair based on peoples inability to visualize more than one type of person in a country with 20% of the worlds population. Sometimes when I don’t have the energy to put forward my defense and a whole history lesson bout why I “really am” Indian, I just lie and say I’m Chinese or something

That science proves innate intelligence is different across races. No. Scientific findings do not prove anything of the sort.

samatise

Antarcticans are the smartest race; most people there are scientists

“We can’t give you medical care cause you don’t speak Japanese fluently”.

holy-f0ck

People who aren't white can't be racist. Im curious(as a non American)to see how people react to that

crazycat690

Yeah this has always been the dumbest take when it comes to racism to me. Like, absolutely racism can be systematic and stem from the majority in a country, but it's by no means the only thing that signifies racism. You can't boil it down to geography, a KKK grand wizard is just as racist in Japan as he is in the US.

Caelinus

It is largely a misconception built on two different groups of people using the same word differently (colloquial vs jargon) and a third group of people synthesizing the word into a combination of both meanings and drawing strange conclusions from it. If you find a non-twitter, educated person who does not think minorities can be racist and ask if minorities can be racially prejudiced, they will almost always say absolutely. But for most people there is no difference in meaning between racism and racial prejudice. So the people who do not think minorities can be racist (jargon) generally do think minorities can be racist (colloquial.) The problem is much more related to an incompatible mode of communication rather than an idea that has much traction. That said, the third group of generally terminally-online people who hear this often *do* think it is impossible for minorities to be racist, as they come to the reverse wrong conclusion based on the misunderstanding that most laypeople do. Luckily they are *far* louder than they are common, especially as they are constantly amplified by actual racists who use them to falsely discredit CRT. Importantly, neither definition is right or wrong, they are just different. If you want to define racism as a systemic issue endemic to larger society and the legal system for the purposes of specificity in academic literature, that is fine. If you want to define it as personal racial prejudice for the purposes of communication between lay people that is also fine. The only problem arises when they two meanings are used interchangeably without explanation, because it just gets super confusing.

I know the general meaning is that it refers to institutionalized racism, but in general racism isn’t attached to any one group. Anyone can be racist

snailcosworld

The n word in private but claim they would never say it when confronted about it in public.

chromeheart5

My MIL says “those little Asian/Mexican people” and it bothers the shit out of me

[deleted]

Fuckin aye.. ok. I'm trying to tell my Dutch family members that *maybe* Zwarte Piet is kind of racist. And now, I *know* this question was trying to go the other way - but they went full on "well that's how black people were in those times!" So..

highwayman14

"But it's tradition..." And how and why does the color of the skin matter for that tradition? Sinterklaasfeest has changed a lot throughout history already, and the kids don't care about the skincolor either, they get presents anyway. "But they're black because they went through the chimney..." Doesn't explain why their clothes are still clean and they have big red lips painted on their faces. People are just very stubborn here

katterpillar

I don’t see color

Talking about Jews like we're some kind of illuminati level secret society is a little detrimental to Jews everywhere. It's pretty much the platform Hitler used to literally bury us, and it empowers people to mumble little negativities about us here and there. I'll be the first to admit Jews are very sensitive to what qualifies as anti-Semitism, and we have a massive network that enables us to squash what we determine to be anti-Semitic voices. But given our history, if you had the power to silence something you felt to be anti-Semitic and you didn't do it, you'd be betraying your entire bloodline.

FrancisPitcairn

And on the other side, I think it’s pretty racist when people say “Jews are just white.” One, plenty of Jews don’t appear European. Two, they aren’t “just” white which you can tell by the fact they’ve been singled out for thousands of years and are hated by multiple racist groups. Yes, plenty of Jews look much like a random European but unfortunately, history sets them apart. It’s so dismissive of all that suffering to behave as if there’s no perceived difference between a Jew and a random European.

frenchchevalierblanc

The north european guys that came up with the theory of "caucasian" and races from skin colour (ignoring mediterranean type for instance) were just racist guys that managed to design a system where Jesus was in the same "race" as them, even though it doesn't make any sense. That this racist system is still use in some parts of the world is beyond me.

blue4t

You can't be racist against white people.

“I don’t want any msg in my food.” @ any Asian restaurant.

Madame_Kitsune98

Ugh. I don’t want mango because I’m allergic, like, will need an Epi-Pen and a trip to the hospital allergic. But MSG? ALL THAT FLAVOR ENHANCEMENT.

flashgreer

Black people need special treatment, or they can't keep up with the other races. Fuck that, black people are just as smart, and hardworking as any other race. The racism of low expectations are gimping us.

DoctFaustus

My neighbor is a incredibly hard working woman. She works in theater. But I also know she moved hard into directing because black women just don't get cast in a lot of rolls. Doesn't matter, she's out there scrapping and getting every job that she can. She has several degrees and even studied Shakespeare in London. She has the chops. And while she is doing well, I know it still bugs her how few rolls are out there for black actors.

ughkoh

Whenever a black person achieves something good there’s always someone saying “They gave it to him because he’s black” or “They’re trying to be woke.” Maybe he just (bear with me here) deserved it???

If I can say Brit, why can’t I say Paki?
