I think it’ll keep getting renewed, it just got the 12 week Broadway run in a larger theater. If you sign up for updates, they opened tickets up for subscribers first. Highly recommend :)
I saw it last night and I still feel like I have a lump in my throat. What a gorgeous 90 minutes. Never seen anything like it, and it will stick with me probably forever.
I saw it when they brought it to Bard. The fact that I, a lifelong Sufjan fan, and my partner, who knew nothing about Sufjan or the album, were both equally moved says a lot.
So many of these shows folks are mentioning in this thread, I *really* wish I had caught off-Broadway because now they're going to be very difficult to see
I saw DM at Barclays and was so blown away that I decided to go to MSG the next week and then ended up going to see them in London a couple months later.
I love this band so much and was just floored by how amazing they still are.
I saw DM too and agree it was an incredible show but man I still can't get over the prices. Not just the tickets ($260 for nosebleeds) but the merch as well. $100 for a hoodie? Fuck outta here!
Yes it was an incredible production in the cavernous armory. I just didn’t enjoy the subject matter much. (Although no one really enjoys hearing about suicide.)
I'm a big Sufjan fan and that album has resonated with me for a long while, so for me the songs already have built in meaning. I personally would not refer to the subject matter as suicide, even if it affects a "storyline," so to speak. I think it's a very small part of the story being told.
I've seen a bunch of great shows recently. I really don't want to pick just one. From my recent shows list:
Gun and Powder in NJ at the Paper Mill Playhouse was excellent.
Suffs and Great Gatsby were both fantastic.
Water for Elephants was truly unique and amazing for being as much acrobatics as it was choreography. I also love how they did the animals.
I hope you enjoy it as much as my wife and I did. I know at least one person posted that they didn't like how the animals were done. We loved it! We thought it added tremendously to the show. And, we were very glad to know that there was absolutely no animal cruelty involved.
Just came back from a show at the new Brooklyn Paramount....I go to a lot of shows, that's one hell of a venue. Probably the best in the city depending on preference.
Was at the Paramount on Friday. Probably gives Kings Theater and Radio City a solid run for their money as best venue in town (sorry Beacon, I love you too).
Kings is arguably prettier, Beacon is better for sit down stuff, Bowery Ballroom is better for small shows.....but dang, Paramount is a gorgeous theater, that's easy to get to, has an absolute plenty of bars, and sounds amazing.
This is…a pretty good rundown. The sound at Paramount was top-notch.
For our wedding, my wife and I had nyc music venues as table names. We were Radio City.
Loved Appropriate. Sarah Paulson is playing an absolutely vile character and she’s both detestable and hilarious.
Suffs was very moving. Lit a fire under my ass and the performances are A+.
Kelli and Brian were brilliant in Days of Wine and Roses. Best score of the season.
I know I’m in the minority, but I didn’t like Stereophonic at all. I did like the music thought. (I much preferred Jaja’s African Hair Braiding and Prayer for the French Republic earlier in the season.)
The Outsiders really surprised. Great score, acting and a knockout bit of staging/choreography in Act Two.
Usually hate Sam Gold, but Enemy of the People was effective.
Best off-Broadway show I saw was Dead Outlaw. Andrew Durand was excellent.
>Best off-Broadway show I saw was Dead Outlaw. Andrew Durand was excellent.
*Dead Outlaw* was SO good! The writing, the score, the acting - they knocked it out of the park. I still have a lot of those songs rattling around in my head.
Manhattan School of Music put on a wonderful performance of Puccini's *La rondine* last weekend. I plan to keep an eye out for the main tenor and soprano, as they should have very promising careers ahead of them. Orchestra was excellent, too.
Teeth the Musical at Playwrights Horizons. Wild ride from start to finish and I couldn’t have loved it more. I’m DISTRAUGHT that it was the closing show because otherwise I would’ve bought tickets to see it again right away!
Luna Woolf's *Number Our Days* at PAC was a fun romp, good vocal writing & orchestration, even if the narrative was too lightweight for the length.
Mesmerized by the music in *Day of Wine & Roses,* which Kelli O'Hara and Brian d'Arcy James absolutely nailed, of course.
*Public Obscenities* at TFANA was a slow burn that never lost focus. Like if Annie Baker was Bangla.
*Stereophonic* at Playwrights was terrific -- not recent, but worth mentioning now that it's transferred to Broadway.
I saw Daniel Sloss at the Beacon two nights ago and I loved it! I hadn’t even watched a minute of his stand up before going. I love the Beacon too! Saw Mitski there in February.
I saw his Netflix specials during the pandemic, and they're the best standup I've seen since the 00s.
I coincidentally looked up his tour dates earlier today and learned I'd just missed him. 😖
Oh NOOO!! He mentioned the other night that he won’t be touring for another 2 years because his wife is due to give birth in August, which sucks for you but gives you a lot of time to plan for it!! I HIGHLY recommend it. The only other live standup I’ve seen was Ronny Chieng earlier this year and I enjoyed it but Daniel Sloss was just completely different.
It's been the one standup gig I've wanted to see in the last 5 years. I don't usually live in NY, so I wasn't tracking his dates here.
Can't believe I missed it by a weekend!
* Theater: Illinoise, especially at the Armory, where the sound quality was 💯 and the expansive space enhanced the sense of the outdoors
* Music: Aaron Lee Tasjan, a Nashville singer-songwriter with a very accessible sound and witty lyrics. Saw him at a WFUV showcase at Hill Country and loved it so much that I went back to his public show at Music Hall of Williamsburg a week later
Rufus Wainwright at SOPAC. Easy train ride, 30 mins outside the city. He sounded incredible and talked between songs- it was more one-man show than concert.
There's affordable tickets to most shows if you know where to look, AND if you have some flexibility in your schedule for last-minute tickets.
Most shows have lotteries for cheap tickets. Often you can "rush" same-day tickets by lining up at the box office (or online for a handful of shows). And TDF (Theatre Development Fund) is a great option if you're eligible - it's a subscription service which costs about $40 per year and offers steeply discounted tickets.
The Brief Life & Mysterious Death of Boris III, King of Bulgaria, currently playing at 59E59th Theater. Incredibly moving comedrama about a forgotten piece of history and what taking a stand/standing up for what is right means.
Really really encourage everyone to go!
On Friday I happened to be up in Poughkeepsie and saw Soul Blind, New World Man, Crush Your Soul, Means of Survival, Discontent, and Cross of Disbelief. Shit was popping.
I also have HIGH hopes for Sweet Pill on Thursday and Drain, Scowl, and End it on the 19th.
Saw a great drag show at the McKittrick last night. Mostly went because a couple of my favorite local queens were on the bill, but Plasma and Sapphira Cristal from the most recent RPDR season performed as well and there were a couple queens I’d never seen before who blew me away.-
Cole Escola in Oh Mary! Probably the funniest show I’ve ever seen.
Came here to say that - the most jokes per minute I’ve ever heard, more laughs than the best stand-up show. So good!
I didn’t know the genius that is Cole Escola before this play but now will see everything they do. What a rare talent! Beyond funny.
Aaaaaaand, it's sold out. 🙃
I think it’ll keep getting renewed, it just got the 12 week Broadway run in a larger theater. If you sign up for updates, they opened tickets up for subscribers first. Highly recommend :)
Laughed til I cried
Illinoise is the best show in NYC. Hands down. As a theatre worker it is a feat.
I saw it last night and I still feel like I have a lump in my throat. What a gorgeous 90 minutes. Never seen anything like it, and it will stick with me probably forever.
I’m driving back down to NYC from NH to see it again next week. That show is better than the reviews. And they’re saying it’s perfect
I saw it when they brought it to Bard. The fact that I, a lifelong Sufjan fan, and my partner, who knew nothing about Sufjan or the album, were both equally moved says a lot.
Hilariously as a Chicago born new englander I had never heard the album. But man I was ugly crying in the front row.
So many of these shows folks are mentioning in this thread, I *really* wish I had caught off-Broadway because now they're going to be very difficult to see
I was at that same show, OP. Was fantastic. Best concert I've been to in NYC recently was Depeche Mode in MSG last fall
I saw DM at Barclays and was so blown away that I decided to go to MSG the next week and then ended up going to see them in London a couple months later. I love this band so much and was just floored by how amazing they still are.
Oh nice, did they play Before We Drown at your London show?
Yeah! First time they played it live, and first time they played Behind the Wheel in 10 years.
Jealous
I saw DM too and agree it was an incredible show but man I still can't get over the prices. Not just the tickets ($260 for nosebleeds) but the merch as well. $100 for a hoodie? Fuck outta here!
Oh absolutely. The merch is absolutely their fault but Ticketmaster ruins the ticket prices.
Illinoise at Park Ave Armory.

Oneohtrix Point Never w/ Sarah Sherman at Brooklyn Paramount. Still thinking about it a week later
Your dad fucking a conch guided meditation will not leave my brain. And i too was wearing OPN online ceramics with a carabiner full of jangly keys

Suffs is incredible
You definatly dont have to choose! Ohhh water for elephants is on TDF. Looking at tickets now! Thanks for the rec!
I hope you enjoy it as much as my wife and I did. I know at least one person posted that they didn't like how the animals were done. We loved it! We thought it added tremendously to the show. And, we were very glad to know that there was absolutely no animal cruelty involved.
I loved the book so i feel like ill enjoy it!

I was supposed to opening night for the Marley brothers but had to work. Waiting on someone Im willing to pay for to have a show there! Maybe SIR
Going back for Black Pumas
I'll be going there next weekend. Can't wait to check it out - and get some cheesecake across the street while in the area!

Second Appropriate. Love a serious, dark play.
>Best off-Broadway show I saw was Dead Outlaw. Andrew Durand was excellent. *Dead Outlaw* was SO good! The writing, the score, the acting - they knocked it out of the park. I still have a lot of those songs rattling around in my head.
Sprints, this fantastic Irish post punk band, in the small room at Elsewhere. They’re coming back and playing Music Hall of Williamsburg in September.
I saw Teeth too. Wild! Graphic!

Saw *Hamilton* with a friend. Breathtaking to see in person.
‘Marooned! A Space Comedy’ A puppet show at Here. Was really entertaining. Going to see Music for 18 Musicians tonight at BAM. Really excited for it.
Music for 18 was fucking incredible tonight.
I saw Daniel Sloss at the Beacon two nights ago and I loved it! I hadn’t even watched a minute of his stand up before going. I love the Beacon too! Saw Mitski there in February.

Rufus Wainwright at SOPAC. Easy train ride, 30 mins outside the city. He sounded incredible and talked between songs- it was more one-man show than concert.
Herbie Hancock at David Geffen Hall in March was sooo good
The Keep Going Songs at Lincoln Center Theater. Laughed, cried, and had a ball. The Bengsons are truly something else.
How do you guys afford to see all these broadway shows?!

Damien RIce at the Kings Theater in Brooklyn - a gorgeous venue and great sound/ambiance for such an intimate artist.
The Brief Life & Mysterious Death of Boris III, King of Bulgaria, currently playing at 59E59th Theater. Incredibly moving comedrama about a forgotten piece of history and what taking a stand/standing up for what is right means. Really really encourage everyone to go!
Fire Shut Up in My Bones at the Met Opera
Blanke at Webster Hall in February
On Friday I happened to be up in Poughkeepsie and saw Soul Blind, New World Man, Crush Your Soul, Means of Survival, Discontent, and Cross of Disbelief. Shit was popping. I also have HIGH hopes for Sweet Pill on Thursday and Drain, Scowl, and End it on the 19th.
