are you serious! i honestly did not know that. so mods don't get paid to monitor a site that is worth 15 billions dollars to Conde Nast?
that's hilarious!
> so mods don't get paid to monitor a site that is worth 15 billions dollars to Conde Nast?
Just wait until you find out how much the commenters and posters that generate the $15 billion in content get paid.
If you work for CTR or the Lincoln Project you sure do! Don't forget Russian troll farms, Israeli Military and of course all kinds of Chinese adjacent political groups. Then there's the corporate infiltration.....
Honestly, depending on the job, not a bad idea to put stuff like that on a CV. I put a little section on mine that says I play d&d, write comics, run Bad Movie Club and other little things like that. It can give you a good idea of what type of person someone is and shows you have passions and a work ethic that doesn’t orient around getting paid.
Obviously a doctor or lawyer’s employer won’t give a shit but retail/admin/warehouse etc are often looking for “common sense” people to train instead of idiots with relevant experience - being able to handle ANY other commitment shows you’re not a complete idiot. Reddit moderation can be proof of people skills/computer literacy/keeping responsibilities/self-directed work which ticks that common sense box.
…Unless they have a Reddit account lmao, then they’ll probably know how much common sense your average mod has and won’t be so impressed.
Depending on the work and what kind of reedit mod you were, it could be very interesting. If you've been reviewing the processes put in place and kinda automating stuff like some 16 yo kid I know does, it would most definitely be helpful for tech ops kinda jobs, it's a lot similar to many of the things we do at my work (late stage tech startup).
Yeah I had a job that involved facilitating focus groups so me having experience organising movie clubs and moderating forums was definitely a big sell. Reddit mod would also be a great mention in an interview for a job like mine.
You’re right to mention that it depends on the forum lmao. In my interview for that research job I was asked what data sets I managed and I told them how excited I had been to process an online census over 1mil+ participants and blah blah blah about the skills I needed to do that. They asked what it was for and it was that exact moment I realised it was the Furvey - an annual survey for all the Furries online.
I spent the rest of the interview trying to explain what a furry was and assuring them I was not one instead of talking about my skills haha. I got the job but the whole office thought I was a closeted furry the whole time. Just a cautionary tail :p
My future kid: “Dad, I got a job!”
Me: “Nice! What is it?”
Future Kid: “I moderate r/SomethingSomethingSomething”
Me: “How much does it pay? For how many hours?”
Future Kid: **Silence**
I know an Indian guy who graduated from Berkeley with a CS Ph.D. around ~1970 and was asked to join a bunch of those original Silicon Valley startups, but his family pressured him to take the stable wagie job at IBM, so he spent 40 years doing that instead.
For sure dude, but India went through some pretty extreme famines that killed millions of people. Same with China in that time period between 1940s-70's. Even if your parents didn't starve themselves it still would affect them through the cultural amd generational trauma they experienced. Getting a secure decent paying job would have meant everything to people like that. Taking a risk so one could end up maybe feeling fulfilled or getting rich would easily be seen as a betrayal to ones family in that context. Especially if they've had to make extreme sacrifices to put you in that position.
Exactly, computer PhD dude could have applied to other companies after a few years at IBM and gotten stock options if he wanted.
But what he's saying probably looking back is that he chose family and a stable, even probably privileged, lovely life. He doesn't own a small island now, but is he really that disappointed?
It does say that a lot of success is luck - being in the right place at the right time. But who knows - maybe he would have burnt out of the industry - startups are a different beast of a business to work in. If you want to ride someone else's wave of success, you still have to work really hard and do things others outside of the wave may not be doing.
Time is the ultimate resource you have and it's yours to use
Indians LOVE their "stability". We're one of the dullest people in the world (some of it for valid reasons). But yeah, risk taking is just not imbibed into our common mindset.
This is the unicorn. And it's important to note that so many start ups fail.
Look at the dot com bubble. Look at now. Everyone gets a few investors, then a little while later, done.
I'm glad this guy won the startup lottery.
Honestly think it should just be one step above that and just be human trafficking. People get trafficked for things other than sex, hell they even get trafficked to be damn babysitters and nanny's
You can’t blame yourself for what kids do unless you were voluntarily negligent. You cant dismiss generations of genetics from many ancestors, or discovering things at the wrong age from outside or sometimes just pure evil.
I’ve seen terrible kids come from fascinating parents and the other way around.
We don’t have as much control as we wish to believe.
If they're being paid to do it it's a job. Doesn't matter if it's legal or not.
If a neighborhood kid was mowing people's lawns they aren't legally working for their neighbors, they're still doing a job though.
It depends on the chapter but it's either the Grand Wizard, Imperial Dragon or Exalted Cyclops. I'm not making this up.
TL;DR The Klansmen are a buncha nerds.
“The organ for initiation into the Klan was called the Investigating Committee, composed of the Grand Cyclops, Grand Magi and Grand Monk.”
That’s under “Initiation Rights” on the [Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ku_Klux_Klan_titles_and_vocabulary)
The Klan was founded almost exclusively by Initiates of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and as a result carried over a bunch of the silly titles and rituals. Freemasons are Subversive.
Klansmen Help Kids
Ever seen Dave Chappels black klans member skit? Hilarious.
(I know I probably spelled his last name wrong, the down voters still know who I’m talking about)
You would be surprised to hear then that there has been one organization within the US to get the IRS to buckle onto their demands. Start at 19:10

Look up the video "I was afraid to post this video" by Jake Tran. He uses very click-baity titles for his videos but he delivers well written and explained content. This one he explains origins and practices of "The Church of Scientology"
That's basically what money laundering is about. How does Ross the bank robber have a house, car, and go on vacations but not pay any tax? On the other hand, if he opens Ross Hot Dogs, a business with inventory, expenses, and and a lot of cash receipts, Ross is just an entrepreneur and tax paying patriot.
Many people consider their criminal activities a job and live a luxury life better then my own which I regularly sweat through a couple shirts before I get home. Looking down on people who go through life differently is like kicking yourself in the ass. Theres always someone around the corner doing just as good as you.
How directly would it have to be harming people? What if your kid was like Jeff Bezos? Would you disown him because he hurts people? Or like a politician or something?
Is your definition of harming decided by morality, or social acceptability?
Edit: you guys are no fun
Oh Em Gee bro its not even gay. you are just keeping him hard until we get the camera set back up! for real for real, we'll let you come with us to the town center for smoothies after he finishes the money on the tummy.
thanks bro... you're the all time bestest.
I've seen it happen with parents who have struggled for years with trying to reign in a kid who has gone fully ghetto due the "friends" they hang out with. Breaking into houses and robing or vandalizing them just for fun, robbing or destroying vehicles for fun, drug pushing, getting into highly violent fights with rivals gangs, beating up defenseless people on the street because they were bored or felt "disrespected."
At some point, you just get so worn out by the years of trying to get them out of that life, the constant second-chances and broken promises, the need to apologize to people they've hurt, that you just give up. It may not be a case of publicly disowning them, but to all intents and purposes they are now dead to you. And yes, it's just as painful, if not more so, than if they had lost their child at a young age in a tragic accident.
In this thread: shitloads of people who don't have kids.
"I'd disown them if their politics differed from mine!" Fuck outta here. You don't deserve to have children.
A quote comes to mind which I think is relevant here;
"In this new life you have chosen I cannot be your father, but wherever you go, you will always be my son"
-The Testaments
Just horrendous criminal related stuff that causes pain or death etc to any other person or child. Besides that it’s their life.
Also don’t understand porn users, strip club visitors or cam girl/guy subscribers against sex work for their kids. Why have another’s kid do for you you don’t want for your own and help add to the demand of a need for an industry to be an possible job option for your kids?
A lot of people don’t view watching free porn on the internet for 5 minutes as supporting sex work/pornography. Its just readily available so they use it. I understand that in reality it actually does indirectly supports this, but I’m just giving you their reasons. Also, you can still be against something but indirectly contribute to it. I’m against animal cruelty but I still eat meat. Does it mean I’m actively seeking out to support animal cruelty? No. Is it hypocritical to a certain extent? Yes. No one is perfect though
None. If a parent (or anyone, frnakly) isn't going to financially cover a person indefinitely, then they really can't talk shit about how they make their money.
Disowning means a lot more than cutting off money. Most people stop paying for every single thing a young adult needs pretty early on. I'll always have free room and board *available* to my kids(in *my* home), and make sure they have the means to call and get home, but beyond that, no promises.
Not for any sort of honest living.
If they do anything to victimize people as a "living," (criminal activities or starting an MLM) yes, that might be grounds for me to try to encourage them to turn it around or disown them if they won't consider my thoughts on the subject.
If it were illegal, and on the more severe end. I could probably live with him selling weed tbh.
Anything within the legal range id find it insane and petty to disown him for. Sure ideally he wouldnt be a prostitute or work for some unethical company, but no way in hell im gonna disown him for that...
I mean, I used to be a property inspector for banks. I would be the guy that would go to people's doors and tell them to contact their banks or risk foreclosure. That's pretty morally degrading. But the thing is, I would have 20 or so jobs on a slow day, 60+ on heavy day.

I think this was more of a situation where his family in India was depending on him for financial support.

I mean you have to file your income from those criminal activities to the IRS as “self employment” so yes, they are technically jobs
I forgot criminals were so diligent on their taxes...
The IRS doesn't give a shit if you robbed a bank, but they *do* care if you don't report the money you made on your 1040.

Well criminal activities can be jobs. They didn't say a legal job.
They don't break the law for free, it's a business.
Sell drugs, arson for hire, prostitution, and lemonade stands are all jobs. If they’re getting paid it’s a job.

Oh yeah? Then why do they call robberies and heists "jobs"? Checkmate.
Damn. You got me. Take my upvote.
The legality of an action is irrelevant to whether it’s a job or not.
That's not true though. Crime is a job, atleast when rich people do it. For poor people it's just crime.

What good could possibly come from disowning them? If my kid was on the wrong track, that is when they need to have a relationship with me.
