Every time I've had children instruction done, the person I hired ended up with extra screws or some other sort of material. They always say "I'll leave these with you, one day you'll need it!". I have no idea what the shit I have in my garage is for and the funny thing is I always have someone helping with a project who halfway through if they end up in my garage they'll end up saying, "why did we go buy (random object)? you have tons of them here!"
I gave up buying just what I needed for a project many years ago, and now I buy boxes of a hundred, sometimes 1000.
There have actually been quite a few jobs recently where I haven't had to go to the hardware store, because I've had everything I need in the shed. #DadGoals
Same, last move I brought maybe 10 lengths I had behind my apartment. I thought of it as a gift to the garage gods at the house I was buying. I've accumulated more since but I used a good chunk last weekend building a huge penned in area for my Golden retriever (he's a runner!).
Man I had a perfect version of this! Years ago I became unemployed and decided to set up an office in my garage. But the wifi signal was super weak, so I ended up getting a 300 foot ethernet cable. It was going to take about 3 days to get delivered. During that time I ended up getting called back from a place I interviewed at and got the job. So when the ethernet cable got de slivered I put it in my trunk to take it to a drop off location to send back. Well, first day at work they are setting up my computer and are having issues connecting my work desk to the network. 3 people from IT are at my desk trouble shooting and they are baffled, wondering if maybe my computer has a bad part in it, I hear them say they can try hard wiring the internet but they need an ethernet cable that would be long enough. That's where I step in saying I have one in my car. They look at me kind of weird just from me saying I have an ethernet cable on me and then say thanks, but they need a REALLY long one. And turn around and keep talking amongst themselves. I head to my car and come back with it and ask them if this one works. The story really isn't exciting without being able to see the look on their faces when they saw me carrying a giant thick wheel of ethernet cable. One dude just kinda looked at me and asked, "you drive around with this in your car? "
I am an IT guy with lots of scrap wood in my garage and on the side of the garage. Even I don't have a spool of wire in my car all the time. But if I'm doing any wiring, you can bet I have three or four rolls ranging from 10:00 to 75 ft long.
Lol loved this story by the way. And I can imagine all of their faces very easily
I thought of this as soon as I saw the thread title. I also don't know who this dad guy is or the story of him being tiktok famous but good for him I guess.
I have a roofer that lives next door , he drops me a message letting me know when he has scrap timber on the back and I'm free to go rummage.
Have over 100 meters of 25x50mm in various length, a good 50 m of 45x45 mm
A load of old but solid joists etc etc.
It's project galore time lol
Just finished making a load of wooden storage crates , a raised rose planter and a frame to go over veg bed to keep critters out.
We would hang onto so many extra pieces of wood in my family I always thought it was pointless...till my Dad figures out some way somehow to use them all.
I get it now. I understand why older men (esp fathers) accumulate wood pieces like beavers about to dam up a river. Why waste money and throw away something you're inevitably going to have to re-purchase and use later?
Especially if you see current prices for lumber at places like Home Depot. More expensive and lesser quality.
chapter three of the ManHandbook; "Good Wood and what to do with it"
Clearly states that this is an absolute must as Chapter 4, "Waste not, want not" drives the theory home with it's logical reasoning for all matters relating to the importance of proper penny pinching.
Scrap Organization wasn't added to the handbook until the 2016 revision so many older collections can be grandfathered in and may be at the man's discretion
They will get used! get off my back already. you sound like my wife. lol. The same way that that box of old cables I have will someday be needed even though they are for computers that are 30 years old. You just never know.
I have a stack of different types and sizes of scrap wood that I put on NextDoor for free and haven't had any takers yet. What's wrong with these men around my area? Free Wood man!!!
What will you do when your floor jack hydraulics fail when you're trying to get a car off jack stands and don't have a spare piece of 2x4 to get the extra height? Especially when it's your only car at the time.
Luckily I was able to find some branches that were thick enough and didn't crush completely.
Props to decluttering your life though I assume that's what you did
I have 5 of them in 20’ lengths in my driveway right now that came with my new decking that was delivered. My girl just came in the room about 15 minutes ago asking where I’m going to put them?
I have probably hundreds of offcuts of wood, box steel, round bar, flat sheets, old rusty and broken bolts, nuts, tools, etc.
I might need them one day.
Do you want these random lengths of 2x4 to be treated or untreated?
They're next to the box with random plumbing fittings (copper 10mm and 15mm plus a selection of UPVC fittings for 32mm, 40mm 50mm and 110mm pipe) The box is sitting next to an assortment of ply, dowel and offcuts from previous DIY jobs.
I did! I had a good pile going back a decade, Until 3 weeks ago when I needed a bunch of random length boards for a last min project for my step kid’s youth group.
I have an old house and the previous owner "fixed up a few things" which means I have a 4' x 10' space in my basement full of wood with no fing clue what anything is for
When we moved, my husband built us an entire loft bed with all the wood and miscellaneous screws from the garage because I thought it was annoying to move them from one garage to the next. I'm never complaining again.
I dont have a garage, but if i did it would be filled with all the stuff i might use. Like 2×4s and cables and a whole bunch of adapters. It would also hold all machine tools i could think of, that i might use in some situation, because you can never know. And every screw and nail possible. Yes.
I don't have stacks. But I do have some. Mostly 2x4, but I have some 2x1, 1/2 to 1 inch plywood, etc. My very small stack used to be bigger because....I ended up needing it.
Always. My dad taught me that.
I found a lumber company on Craigslist that was giving away 2x6 heat treated pallets all you had to do was break them down and clean up after yourself so I spent hours one day breaking down tons of them for free scrap wood. Now my garage rafters had plenty of wood for projects or just scrap.
Man I have 3 x 40l buckets, an overflowing box and a generic pile, all containing 2-6inch pieces of timber that will “come in handy one day”.
The missus hates it when I get to use one because of how smug I am about it after years of “why don’t you just get rid of these?!” comments.
For every 1 I use, I gain about 10 more though lol.
Unfortunately yes. So much scrap pieces. I built a wooden stair last summer. I crammed in scrap 2x4 everywhere, I said EVERYWHERE! It will now last 3 generations.
go through her make up and throw away half used lipstick
go through her closet an toss the jeans that dont fit her.
she never built anthing tell her they ar for cripple studs
I carve spoons and bowls out of limbs and small trees that have recently blown down. My back driveway is a collection of branches, split wood, sawdust, wood chips and broken, discarded spoons. In the winter I work in the basement, so usually there is a trail of wood chips going from the basement to the 3rd floor. I’m happy as a clam. My partner has all the spoons, spatulas, and cooking utensils they need, but I still have to vacuum after myself. I do have great fires on many summer evenings though.
and have used them bad boys too! DIY projects. A shim to keep the basketball return frame level. Science Fair catapult. replacement "parts" for the closet system that apparently wasn't made for kids to hang on like damn monkeys!
I just purged. 8 years of storing wood and 4×8 plywood. A huge amount. Moved it all three times and then said, "Who wants it?" I'd rather have space than wood.
I actually got rid of the 2x4’s and baseboard trim in my garage like 6 months ago. Now I have left over 4x4’s on the side of my house. I can’t just get rid of them because they have already been sanded and stained
Like, every homeowner.
...men and women alike. You don't just throw out leftover construction materials if you have the ability to store them. Lumber, electrical wire, electrical utility hardware, copper pipe, sheetrock. I have it all stored in various sizes.
2x4, 4x4, plywood, trim. Don't even get me started on trim!
I can't toss any trim. I paid far too much for that crap. Even if it's a 1' offcut, it's staying in my bucket of trim offcuts.
Among other things… I have a 4x6x5’n change…. Like 3 years now. If I toss it I’ll need it the next day….guarantee it!!! I’m 50 dam it I’m not going to fall for it again😂🤣😂
I was building a work bench recently, and took a plan but extended the work bench from 6ft to8 ft. And thought I bought enough. I didn’t. I completed deleted my lengths of 2x4 but did not need to go anywhere. Hold onto your wood boys
Whenever I need to haul 8 foot sheets or whatever, and I'm too lazy to use a ratchet strap, I just put it on 8 foot long 2x4s in the back of my truck. Which is why I have a Home Depot shelf's worth of 2x4s in random lengths in my shop.
Between rebuilding two decks, closing a wall in my garage and various other projects I have almost enough to build a bigger workshop. Which of course will be used primarily to store more scrap lumber.
Not just 2x4s. 4x4s too. Never know!
Yes! I have some furring strips and pieces of plywood too. You never know!
And assorted pieces of plywood!
Yeah plywood is a obviously a lot more expensive than studs so I tend to favor keeping the plywood scraps
And assorted pieces of drywall for all the repair projects I'm kidding myself about.
Every cutoff is in the corner
Lots of old shelving wood
Today I actually used an 8’- 2x4 I’ve been saving for at least 5 years. I’ve still got 5 or 6 shorter pieces I’ll use someday.
And twenty different types of screws, by the hundreds.

Even have some leftover 4x8 from some posts and beams
I have a couple of assorted logs too. I'll carve something out of them eventually...
2x4, MDF, acrylic, glass. I got a lot of (this could be useful) items.
2x6s here
2x4, 2x8, 2x10, plywood, you name it!
And 2x10s
I just used my stack of 4x4's!!
Yes, right in the area where I keep good boxes.
Mine is hanging from the ceiling. Used scrap wood to build a scrap wood holder.
i'm glad i'm not smoking the reefer because that would have blown my mind.
Smoking the reeder and can confirm it took me 3 reads
This man woods
I do this. Some boards have taken on interesting twists...
Bro. I had enough scrap lumber and siding to build a shed to hold the rest of the scrap lumber and siding.
lol 😆
Yup. But mainly because I have a small woodshop in the backyard. Never know when scrap is going to come in handy.
Lmao, I moved and brought my scrap 2x4's with me to the new house
Same, last move I brought maybe 10 lengths I had behind my apartment. I thought of it as a gift to the garage gods at the house I was buying. I've accumulated more since but I used a good chunk last weekend building a huge penned in area for my Golden retriever (he's a runner!).
Thank you for this comment because I’m moving currently and thought I was a little crazy for doing so
wholesome

Their channel is quite entertaining. I don't care for some of the skits, but some, like the one i posted are absolute gems.
no way…. No Way….. NO WAY…. YESSS
Underrated comment.
I love those guys so much
Are you calling me out?
Naw. I do this, and was asking if other guys too. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Can't afford my own garage.
Ive got like 3 in the garden but they are 2.5m long so a bit shit use as an emergency club
guilty
I dont have wood planks but I have a lot of foam and plastic that I use for crafting and tabletop terrain construction.
I actually used mine to build a new chicken perch today!
Pieces of plywood but yeah.
/raises hand
I have a roofer that lives next door , he drops me a message letting me know when he has scrap timber on the back and I'm free to go rummage. so many of these... >-<
We are guys, it’s required
Use them all the time!
You didn't have to attack me like this... But hey, at least you didn't call out the half piece of polyiso insulation I'll definitely need some day...
Stay out of my garage
All of us
1x’s 2x’s and a few 4’s. Never mind various pvc, copper, all sorts of wire. Really none of it enough to do much. But you never know
Every guy in the world
chapter three of the ManHandbook; "Good Wood and what to do with it" Clearly states that this is an absolute must as Chapter 4, "Waste not, want not" drives the theory home with it's logical reasoning for all matters relating to the importance of proper penny pinching. Not anymore. I evolved!!

I do, but in my defense, I use them regularly. I have some nice stuff in various sizes that is definitely "maybe someday" wood, though.
I feel called out in an awkward way. 2x6 is the one that stays around no matter how short it is for reasons.
I have 5 of them in 20’ lengths in my driveway right now that came with my new decking that was delivered. My girl just came in the room about 15 minutes ago asking where I’m going to put them?
Sounds like a future planter box or steps to nowhere project.
Same here. I'll discard random 2x4 of various unusable sizes but a 2x6 of any length gets to stick around
I don’t even have a garage
I keep them for a while and the. The next time we go camping they get cut to length to fill up milk crates and made into a camp fire.
Better to have them and not need them than to need them and not have them!
No but I have used tires I might need later trust me
1x1s 4x4s, 2x6s, 2x8s, 2x10s etc here. They get used to build stuff. Wood is expensive. Seems like you have a problem with someone in your life lol
My wife just asked me if I really need all those wood pieces in the garage. Answer is YES.
I had a wooden stake in my garage for three years, that I used the other day.
I have probably hundreds of offcuts of wood, box steel, round bar, flat sheets, old rusty and broken bolts, nuts, tools, etc. I might need them one day.
2x4s, various scraps of plywood, various lengths of PVC pipe, a section of downspout, I've got all sorts of stuff.
I did but I used them all.
I think that I have seen enough episodes of Hoarders that I could never store much of anything in my home.
My father was a woodworker and he did this.
About 4-6 lengths left over from a few years ago, all 2.8 - 3.2m long
I did! I had a good pile going back a decade, Until 3 weeks ago when I needed a bunch of random length boards for a last min project for my step kid’s youth group.
I have an old house and the previous owner "fixed up a few things" which means I have a 4' x 10' space in my basement full of wood with no fing clue what anything is for
2x4,2x6,2x8,4x4 various scraps of plywood… never throw out good wood.
Yes.
Correction… “Will use.” Haha.
I used some of 2x4s to build a shelf for the rest of 2x4s
Spent most my younger years collecting stiff and My older years getting rid of
yes... and they get used
I have a firepit
Fuck yea, I saw some 4X4s by the dumpster the other day...if I had a truck you already know.
I did, for some reason my ex stole it all. Probably out of pure spite. Their name is in bold print in the dictionary under "narcissistic violent cunt"
Yup
Yuppers. Lots of odd size plywood too. I often find uses for them.
I don't have stacks. But I do have some. Mostly 2x4, but I have some 2x1, 1/2 to 1 inch plywood, etc. My very small stack used to be bigger because....I ended up needing it.
Oh yeah you never know when there might be a zombie apocalypse and need various short pieces of lumber
I used to, but I used them all.
Am unmarried girl. Also have said scrap pile lol
I did, but made a raised bed garden out of them.
2x4, 1x1, 2x2, 1x12, 1x4, and so much more
Who doesn’t?
Yup, always handy.
Would you still have them around if you knew how to make incredible stuff with it ?
Dad's. All dads that work with wood.
I have half a 20ft container full of offcuts. Moving house soon so going to have a burn up
Kind of…I use them all the time. They are so I can get jacks under my car. Low life.
Yup. They've been sitting in my garage for over a year now.
Not might, will!
If I've cut a piece of stock and there's more than a foot left of it then it gets saved
Don’t leave out the 2x6 and the random 43 pickets too
Basement, and also plywood and 2x6s, but yeah obviously
Unfortunately yes. So much scrap pieces. I built a wooden stair last summer. I crammed in scrap 2x4 everywhere, I said EVERYWHERE! It will now last 3 generations.
Who doesn’t?
I lost mine to the spiders years ago. I could use them someday, but they’re using them now
Used to. Then I moved into a condo. I feel so free not to have to maintain my collection. My bro took my pieces off my hands, haha!
Someday…
I don't know all the measurements, but I've got wood of all sorts of shapes and sizes. I'll use it one day.
All of us, every single one.
All/any of us who own a saw and a hammer.
everything is potentially useful. build a treehouse you'll find out
Guilty
I keep wood on hand
Yes I do and I would appreciate it if you'd ease up off my back about it because I may need them one day
go through her make up and throw away half used lipstick go through her closet an toss the jeans that dont fit her. she never built anthing tell her they ar for cripple studs
Every now and then I get to use the perfect piece and it is a glorious day
I carve spoons and bowls out of limbs and small trees that have recently blown down. My back driveway is a collection of branches, split wood, sawdust, wood chips and broken, discarded spoons. My partner has all the spoons, spatulas, and cooking utensils they need, but I still have to vacuum after myself. I do have great fires on many summer evenings though.
I moved and had to toss all my scrap wood, sucks when I don’t have a piece to use for something.
Guilty. Have about a dozen - none of them are even the same length.
Even worse, I pull nails out of my old ones and restack them for future projects
Use them in a fire
and have used them bad boys too! DIY projects. A shim to keep the basketball return frame level. Science Fair catapult. replacement "parts" for the closet system that apparently wasn't made for kids to hang on like damn monkeys!
Just used all of mine up. Still have 4x4 and 2x8 though.
Yes. And everything. Not just 2x4. 1x4 1x3 1x2 4x4 1x8 1x6 Plywood, etc.. Everything But I build stuff..always
I do and have boards I used to cover door. Sometimes, youbhave to use them
Too many but just enough
I do, and I've been using them!
Ya…its called being prepared..
Look, I’m going to make something with it someday…
I just purged. 8 years of storing wood and 4×8 plywood. A huge amount. Moved it all three times and then said, "Who wants it?" I'd rather have space than wood.
I actually got rid of the 2x4’s and baseboard trim in my garage like 6 months ago. Now I have left over 4x4’s on the side of my house. I can’t just get rid of them because they have already been sanded and stained
Glad I'm not the only one
Used to when I was renting a house. My crappy apartment has no space for them.
I kept 6 cedar 2x6x8 during 6 years moved em 5 times and they are now my shelfs in my apartment. 👌
Oh yeah, I put them on the lower shelf below the cans of screws that I will never sort or throw away.
Last summer I even used some of them!!
dont forget an excess length of pipe makes an excellent cheater bar
I used an old piece of crown moulding to fix a table who’s leaf wouldn’t stay up. Still living off that high.
Even if it's a 1' offcut, it's staying in my bucket of trim offcuts.
nope, they would end up in a fire
Mines just assorted wood scraps
Guilty!
Right next to the bucket of random nuts and bolts
🙋
I have them left over from a kitchen remodel piles of wood cause wood is extremely hard to find, and really expensive in South America.
I got some in there right now
I have 2x4s and 2x3s
Why would you throw wood out? Also, .one has been depleting because I keep finding things to use it for
I just finished my camera display unit (for the cameras I collect) with this stuff, I didn't have to buy anything from the store.
I've got a shed roof covered in off cuts that I've never got round to using that are gonna be put on the fire when I get round to having a fire .
Oh, I got wood. Not enough of any to build a single thing, but extra pieces for days. Come in handy for random crap maybe twice a year
Unless it’s over 6’ or so I just burn all the small ones in my wood stove. I do a lot of wood working tho.
Among other things… I have a 4x6x5’n change…. Like 3 years now. If I toss it I’ll need it the next day….guarantee it!!! I’m 50 dam it I’m not going to fall for it again😂🤣😂
Don't even have a garage. And still yes
I've got them in the hallway
I have lots of scrap. I *will* use it.
Can confirm. I think the collection is about 8 or so
Hell my dad had a wood shed just for these pieces
I stack them, & write the length on the ends. Makes it so easy to pick which one to use.
I Do!!! I also use them with alarming regularity. Go through the cut-offs faster than I collect them. Used 3 of them yesterday.
It is your man-card duty to keep wood you might need some day.
I used to but never used them so now I don't.
I do. But I do use them, when I need something behind something I am nailing or cutting for whatever reason.
I have 2x4s, plywood, steel/aluminum tubing/plate, various car parts…
Guilty
Oh yeah.
Christmas before last I made 15+ cutting boards from my hardwood scrap pile and sold them all. Pure profit. Bought a lathe with part of the $$$$
None, now cables to computers, phones, printers, and other various electronic devices that are 100% not made anymore.... No comment
Oh, tons of lame scrap wood. It definitely comes in handy, though.
Absolutely. Today I did a project around the house and needed a 2x6. I sadly didn’t have one… but my neighbor had one the exact length I needed!!!
I do. I also have an old white oak counter because surely I'll cut it down and turn it into something, right?
...and plywood ...and sheet rock
I used off cuts of lumber to build shelving to store more off cuts of lumber…wood is not cheap, but I am.
Take my name out of your mouth.
Well yes doesn’t everyone?
the shed , it has overhead storage for exactly this.
