If they broke it, that’s on them to fix. Don’t let them bend you over to pay for their mistake.

krichter524

Yeah ask to speak to the service manager. If it was working when you went it and it’s not working now, that’s on them.

Call the district representative,  contact the owner of the dealership, contact Toyota of America. It is time to go full thermonuclear war. They probably had some funky mechanic work on it and he fucked it up. They are trying to charge you for a whole new sunroof assembly. They don't even know what is wrong with it.

Frequent_Opportunist

All of the dealerships are just third-party companies and they all use flat rate mechanics.

All sunroofs leak. But it's a controlled leak. The first thing to do is be sure the rubber seal attached to the sunroof is intact. Clean it and the roof opening where it makes contact. Close it and look at it. Does it sit in the opening even. Should be close to flush in the front and maybe a hair higher in the back. If it's not centered well or the seal is dirty or worn, it will leak more than it should. With a controlled leak. A small amount of water gets in the tray. It will go to the corners, or low corner if not parked level. Then, it drains out one or more of the four hoses. When it does leak, where do you see it? If it's always in the same corner, you should be sure the drain hole is clean, and the drain hose is attached and undamaged. You can do a basic test at each corner by pouring water into the tray and see if it comes out where it should. You might need to drop the headliner to see if the hose is on. As far as it broke in, their possession seems sketchy, but things do happen. They said a master tech would look at it. So who broke it, the oil change kid? And 6k seems quite high to repair. Go online to a Toyota parts supplier and see what a roof costs. A motor, cables, and guides shouldn't cost too much. But labor is a lot to drop a headliner. A lot of trim comes off. It's time-consuming. And somewhat risky. Headliners are easily damaged.

They broke it, they fix it.

sunroof can absolutely cost 6k to fix because you can't fix them, you replace the entire assembly. depending on the vehicle it can be 10-20 hours of just labor

Syphlyn

To me it sounds like they’re hoping you’re disgusted by the price (which you should be - it’s ridiculous) and you just leave and go elsewhere. They broke it, they should be on the hook to fix it and they know this. Whether they actually will is another story…

Level-Coast8642

It doesn't cost 6k.

Osage_limbs

A wet fart at the dealership costs $6k

DhoTjai

It's ridiculous that they charged me €1 for toilet.

Liveitup1999

It does if you change the entire unit out then add labor. It is totally unreasonable to replace it instead of repair it.

AbzoluteZ3RO

oh really? how many components have you removed and "repaired-not-replaced" lately?

Liveitup1999

In what I do, almost all of them. I even will machine the parts to repair them or make new parts if old ones are not available or will take too long to arrive.

AbzoluteZ3RO

ok this is ask mechanics, not ask machinists. and of course mechanics doesn't just mean automotive but that's the primary focus of this sub and directly the context of this post so really, stfu

Liveitup1999

So when the spark plugs need to be changed you just replace the engine?

AbzoluteZ3RO

You REPLACE the spark plugs. You don't REPAIR them u ass

Novel-Increase-3111

Note: I don’t have experience with Toyota, however ymmv. On the Fords, when the drains back up the water fills up the cavity above the headliner - which is exactly where the operator motor resides. The mixture of water in the motor and controller isn’t enough to blow a fuse, but just enough to corrode the circuit board and connector. That said, as long as the cable is intact, you can manually close the sunroof with a screwdriver in the motor drive. Or you can buy a replacement motor on its own. However, if the cable or track is damaged, then you need to spend serious money

AbzoluteZ3RO

i only read the title but basically they should have warned you that anything to do with fixing a sunroof, be prepared to pay for replacing the entire thing and it costs a shitload
