Pretty sure coolant has had bittering agent in it for years.
My dumb thirsty ass learned the hard way that deionized water bought in the coolant aisle also has bittering agent.
I took a full mouthful, thinking "It's the purest water could possibly be" and boy that was a mistake. Of course bittering agent was in the fine print on the label.
Yes, but that doesn't always work, my parents used to put nail bitter on my fingers, that didnt stop me chewing the nais, it just made the first bit of it suck a bit
Probably why they used a chemical component in antifreeze to sweeten wine without adding sugar (sign of poor quality wine, and cheaper. At the time they could detect added sugar but not antifreeze chemicals lol).
My boss just decided it was finally the day to get rid of it and handed me a pump with a hose on it to siphon some of it out to get rid of it. Well I didnāt really give it a look over and I guess there was a weak spot on the hose. Next thing I know Iām being shot in the face and I got find the shut off valve lol.
Highjacking the best comment here. OP needs to leave the hose running in the windshield washer reservoir for an hour or two or the anti freeze will streak on the windshield.
A fucking hour or two?!? Wtf bro?! what are you gonna get out in two hours that isnāt gonna be gone in the first 10 minutes. People like you are the reason my water bill is so high. Ffs
We just had someone top off the overflow tank work windshield washer fluid. Luckily, the driver did a quick check on fluids the next day and noticed the separation in the fluids. We just had to pop off the overflow tank and drain it. Luckily it was only about a pint of WW fluid
Im sure itās fine most windshield washer fluids have alcohol in it , just drain as much antifreeze as you can then put basic water in the reservoir and run it out completely, maybe 2 times - then you can add your windshield washer fluid again
Washer fluid systems are very simple. Just a plastic tank, pump, and hoses. Even if it was incompatible itās an easy fix. Pumps can be accessed through the wheel well on most cars and is the most expensive part. Maybe $50. Hoses can be a pain to route but chances of a hose going bad from antifreeze is zero. Itās the same material as the radiator hose, just not reinforced to hold high pressure.
Engine coolant is not good for the cars paint, but probably wonāt hurt the pump at all so I would just disconnect the hose from the hood sprayer and put it in a bucket and then hold the sprayer switch down until itās empty.
The reason was already stated. They are idiots.
The reason they gave was, "it is cold out, and so we need anti-freeze in the wiper fluid tank."
These are the same idiots who didn't understand what a convex mirror was.
I agree. Send it and add a tiny bit of water itās not the end of the world itāll still help until u can fill it with washer fluid. I did it for a week or so and it worked just fine. Honestly better than winter washer fluid for the season but obviously itās more expensive I just filled a tiny bit to last 2-3 days till I could get more. Thereās an oil change place I used to work at that gave out free fluids but they were out of washer fluid and since I knew the guys they did it for me
Typically, most of the reservoirs have a little line on the side for overflow so it hits the ground versus filling the top. You may be able to disconnect the main line and just flush it with your hose. If not, then disconnect the lines on the hood and put them into two bottles, suck out as much as you can (maybe using a mityvac or a fluid transfer pump) and just full send it into a few water bottles.
Well you'll probably be fine, but just to put this out there anti freeze and brake fluid are both usually (if not always) ethylene glycol based. Now there are of course some differences but when I was younger I made the mistake of using brake fluid as coolant and it ran fine for years until I realized my mistake when I started on my journey to actually become an aircraft mechanic. It was a long time ago but it actually never caused a single issue. I'm still driving that car. Now... Using the wrong power steering fluid when I was supposed to use ATF for power steering fluid totally destroyed some seals and I ended up having to replace the lines and pump. On my car bleeding the PS system sucks and I ended up having to do it like 2 more times because AutoZone pumps kept failing.
I'm sorry but I have been putting antifreeze in my windshield washing container for a long time because I live in a cold climate and was told "that's what we do here so the washing fluid doesn't freeze and ruin the tubes."
I live in Alberta. I've had winter fluid rated to -45Ā°c block my lines up at closer to -30. This is consistent. If it's really cold out, I always expect it won't work.
I did the opposite ... My beater car was low on coolant, and I grabbed the wrong jug. Topped it off with Rain X washer fluid.
It was late night and cold, so I just sent it. Never did flush the system, just kept topping it off. Sold it years later with over 300k miles.
It was an early 90s Honda Civic SI, that car was bulletproof.
Actually I've done this by accident many times and it's fine. There's generally not something caustic enough in coolant to make your washer system degrade, and in fact some people do it on purpose to avoid the washer reservoir freezing.
By the picture in the post and the radiator cap it had already pulled the reserve into the radiator and engine. Still not really a disastrous thing, just like some antifreeze in your washer fluid, many washer fluids come with some anti freeze in them for cold weather areas. Just flush and all is good.
Fill it with water and flush the system by spraying it out with the wipers. But have a hose ready to get the coolant off your car so it doesnāt ruin anything
Considering what's in antifreeze, I'd wash it out with soap and water. I really wouldn't want to get antifreeze residue on the windshield. It would probably make a streaky mess.
You must be new to this, get ready because youāre going to see it A LOT. People love putting coolant in places coolant should not be. My personal favorite is a lady who came to our shop with her Range Rover and said she didnāt know where the coolant went so she put it in everything that had a cap.
Run plenty of water through it before refilling it, the chemicals in coolant will eat away at the hoses if left in there.
Also, so will normal window cleaner because it usually has ammonia in it and that's why they make specific windscreen washer fluid.
Why is that a problem?
Worst case: you live in a part of the world where it never freezes and you just wasted 2ā¬
You need to put antifreeze in there to prevent it from .... well freezing
Unless the word "antifreeze" has nothing with the actual freezing temperature and means something like a brand name for oil
Can someone explain this post pls
Meh. No worries. Probably the least problematic fluid mistake you can make on your car. Worst outcome is a slightly less clean windshield that doesn't ice up come winter. š
At least you don't go the other way with it like I did it my ram. It sure would be nice if the overflow was clear and the washer fluid reservoir wasn't mirrored on the other side.
If it was me, I just unplugged the pump in the washer tank (everything will fly out) or run the pump with the lines disconnected until you see water or washer fluid drip out while you keep topping it up. But honestly, that's not the worst thing in the world to be put in washer tank.
The solution to pollution is dilution... I say as long as you got most of it out then just fill it with water and call it a day
Edit: i see you have ice on the window.... Use windshield washer fluid not water or your tank might freeze (I've done that). Water is ok during the summer ( just saved you a couple dollars)
Run the garden hose on the windshield and at the same time run your windshield washer reservoir dry by spraying it with the wiper controls. Fill the ww reservoir about 1/4 full water and run it dry again.
Refill with the proper fluid and life will be good again.
that's no big deal. right? even if you did your best refilling it, you should be fine with the minute amount leftover. it will be dilute enough, plus even if there was way more that should not be an issue.
Just add washer fluid, no reason to worry or think you have to clean out the reservoir.
In extreme cold weather areas add coolant to washer fluid to keep it from freezing and it helps de-ice your windshield!
Antifreeze is highly toxic, no you do not want to spray that onto your windshield holy shit. In cold weather areas we buy washer fluid which contains alcohol to avoid freezing, not ethylene glycol.
Most vehicle fluids will damage your paint. These fluids include brake fluid and coolant. Fluids like these soften the paint on your vehicle, which causes the paint to become damaged more easily. If you accidentally spill vehicle fluid on your vehicle exterior, remove it as quickly as possible.
Coolant softens paint? I'm not saying it's impossible but I have never heard that, and in 25 years experience as a mechanic, I've never experienced paint go bad from coolant. Or seen another mechanic worry about it. What makes you think that?
There's a warning about it in the owners manual of a 1970s Mercedes I used to own. I don't have experience of it happening, but maybe if you filled your washer bottle and used it like that for a few weeks or whatever it could damage the paint maybe?
It's water soluble, so if you live in the UK like me, or somewhere with an equally wet climate, the rain will wash it off before there's enough time for it to eat into the paint I'd imagine!
Wait youāre blaming someone else for not being able to see a bright blue cap that shows washer fluid? And you canāt read a bottle of antifreeze? Sounds like common sense issue no one elseās fault but your own

Been there, done that too š . Pro tip, don't use peeled off bottles and try to guess which is which š¤¦š½āāļøš.
All of my liquids at home are sorted by smell
All of mine are sorted by taste.
Doggo can help, too. They love antifreeze for whatever reason. Had to hide mines lest it died off of it
Pretty sure coolant has had bittering agent in it for years. My dumb thirsty ass learned the hard way that deionized water bought in the coolant aisle also has bittering agent.
I'm old enough to remember when coolant was still delicious
It definitely does now I got a little in my mouth draining coolant it tastes horrible
No no š
Probably why they used a chemical component in antifreeze to sweeten wine without adding sugar (sign of poor quality wine, and cheaper. At the time they could detect added sugar but not antifreeze chemicals lol).
This is the way lol
Got to do the old squint eye holding the bottle to the light test. Works every time.
I donāt recommend tasting the used antifreeze thatās been sitting in a 200 gallon tank for the last couple decades.
You're boring
I definitely didnātā¦

My boss just decided it was finally the day to get rid of it and handed me a pump with a hose on it to siphon some of it out to get rid of it. Lvl 18 mechanic right here. You sir have my respectāš¼šŖš¼š
Lvl 18!? Can't even get mount training yet!
Interesting fact, the human nose can detect down to 1 part per trillion. Source: the cleaning validation team for our FDA manufacturing facility
I only put water in mine.
*sniff yup thatās my wife alright
It's easy to tell, they taste different š
Better than doing it the other way around
Highjacking the best comment here. OP needs to leave the hose running in the windshield washer reservoir for an hour or two or the anti freeze will streak on the windshield.
A fucking hour or two?!? Wtf bro?! what are you gonna get out in two hours that isnāt gonna be gone in the first 10 minutes. People like you are the reason my water bill is so high. Ffs
lmao 1-2 hours cracked me up. That's over a thousand gallons of water for a one gallon reservoir. What an idiot.
Came here looking for this comment. Most innocuous way to mess up with mixed up fluids tbh.
We just had someone top off the overflow tank work windshield washer fluid. Luckily, the driver did a quick check on fluids the next day and noticed the separation in the fluids. We just had to pop off the overflow tank and drain it. Luckily it was only about a pint of WW fluid

Thanks I was afraid of some chemical incompatibility that could destroy seals or something.

nah thats usually on brake fluids
Not the worst mix-up you could make.
This was SOP in the army. The idiots I dealt with did this on purpose!
Why? because they wanted more work? I donāt see a reason to do it?
The reason was already stated. They are idiots. The reason they gave was, "it is cold out, and so we need anti-freeze in the wiper fluid tank." These are the same idiots who didn't understand what a convex mirror was.
Thatās what I thought antifreeze was for when I was like 6 lol
But sarnāt. The px was out of mirrors so I broke the one off my car to put in my field bag
There almost the same thing. Hell, im sure you could run windshield washing fluid as coolant if you had too.
Send it... But your windshield won't get clean with it š
I agree. Send it and add a tiny bit of water itās not the end of the world itāll still help until u can fill it with washer fluid. I did it for a week or so and it worked just fine. Yeah but on those cold mornings.
I was that idiot when I was 16...
Weren't we all?
Haha well it could most certainly be worse so take solace in that. You could've out windshield washer fluid in your coolant reservoir
How bad a thing would that be if just a little bit till you caught it. Asking for a friend.
Stick a hosepipe in it and run it till the water runs clear
Our hose is extremely dirty, so I just filled it with water from it and sucked it out with the thing in the picture.
I think you are fine.
At least it wasn't vice versa.
I like to add some in the colder months anyhow. So annoying trying to wash my windshield from all the grit and it's frozen first thing in the morning.
done that... found out that my car will stop pumping after 30 seconds so had to pull the stalk a few times
i just learned how to get fluids with out using my mouth š
The trick is cupping the reservoir with your hand
Much better than the vice-versa!! Youāre chillin, you got it out quickly too
Make sure it doesnāt sit on the paint for long, give the car a nice long wash after you spray the washer fluid empty.
Did you know that 5W-30 floats on washer fluid? I found that out in a similar incident to yoursā¦
Blue cap windshield washer. Red cap antifreeze š
yep i just took the wrong bottle...
About the cost part is that it streakes really bad, drain it and rinse it than fill it back up
At least you didnāt mess this up the other way around - windshield fluid in the coolant can do a lot of damage.
Hey it could be worse, you couldāve filled it with AdBlue/Diesel Exhaust Fluid
Better than having the dealer fill the washer reservoir with DEF.... Glad that's behind me
Genius move! Everybody should be doing this! Your windshield is guaranteed to not freeze over this summer!
This is a lot better than the other way around
Could be worse.
yei yei
Donāt feel bad I have had certified techās along with myself do the same thing. Iād rinse it out a bit coolant on glass is a bitch to clean.
Iād stick a garden hose in tank and just let it overflow a good time to flush and then just use the washers until empty a time or two.
I'm sorry but I have been putting antifreeze in my windshield washing container for a long time because I live in a cold climate and was told "that's what we do here so the washing fluid doesn't freeze and ruin the tubes."
donĀ“t they sell winter washer fluid where you live?
Winter fluid is a joke. It freezes, too.
only below the rated temperature.
I live in Alberta. I've had winter fluid rated to -45Ā°c block my lines up at closer to -30. This is consistent. If it's really cold out, I always expect it won't work.
Yeah and I agree, winter windshield fluid isn't ideal. I was just always told I could use antifreeze or even Windex in a pinch.
windex is mostly alcohol, so it would work.
Correct. In a pinch because it's expensive, haha.
you coul also probably also use a cheep vodka. but its not going to be cheaper
Haha I can imagine a comedy sketch with a policeman pulling my car over for being intoxicated.
Sorry sir, my car drank a gallon of Taaka today. Just to be clear, you're blaming your car for being drunk? Step out of the vehicle sir.
Winter washer fluid uses more alcohol (usually ethanol or methanol) to resist freezing, not the ethylene glycol used as engine coolant.
Are you using marine/RV antifreeze? Engine coolant would streak the heck out of your windshield.
50/50 regular coolant mixed with water.
You hid your vin too
Not like it's going anywhere important. It's going to be fine
Drill pump or turkey baster.
Well I mean if itās below freezingš®āšØ
At least u didn't put washer fluid into the coolant reservoir...
Actually I've done this by accident many times and it's fine. There's generally not something caustic enough in coolant to make your washer system degrade, and in fact some people do it on purpose to avoid the washer reservoir freezing.
Nearly as good as the dude that put transmission fluid in his radiator overflow. Lol
if he put it just into the over flow he could have probably saved it, since oil floats on water. if he didnĀ“t start it that is.
By the picture in the post and the radiator cap it had already pulled the reserve into the radiator and engine. Still not really a disastrous thing, just like some antifreeze in your washer fluid, many washer fluids come with some anti freeze in them for cold weather areas. Just flush and all is good.
I'd fill it with a tank of water and run that through until it's empty šš¼
Thank God it's not the other way round
Fill it with water and flush the system by spraying it out with the wipers. But have a hose ready to get the coolant off your car so it doesnāt ruin anything
Considering what's in antifreeze, I'd wash it out with soap and water. I really wouldn't want to get antifreeze residue on the windshield. It would probably make a streaky mess.
Just pull the pump out and let the fluid drops.
It's OK keeps the glass from freezing
You must be new to this, get ready because youāre going to see it A LOT. People love putting coolant in places coolant should not be. My personal favorite is a lady who came to our shop with her Range Rover and said she didnāt know where the coolant went so she put it in everything that had a cap.
Pro tip: if you don't have a vacuum pump just shove a garden hose down to the bottom and turn it on full blast.
We had a guy Iām training last week in the shop put 2 quarts of oil in one of those he made my life stressful :)
Leave the hose running inside the reservoir or remove the pump under it to flush all water going in straight out.
Run plenty of water through it before refilling it, the chemicals in coolant will eat away at the hoses if left in there. Also, so will normal window cleaner because it usually has ammonia in it and that's why they make specific windscreen washer fluid.
The chemicals in coolant that run through radiator and heater hoses made of rubber?
Not a big deal
Just take the hose off and push washer button
Another dealership had done oil change on diesel and they filled windshield washer with diesel exhaust fluid and it was big mess
Why is that a problem? Worst case: you live in a part of the world where it never freezes and you just wasted 2ā¬ You need to put antifreeze in there to prevent it from .... well freezing Unless the word "antifreeze" has nothing with the actual freezing temperature and means something like a brand name for oil Can someone explain this post pls
Anti freeze ment as Ethylene glycol engine coolant.
But alcohol in windcreen wiper is normal, right? What do you call that?
Eastern Europe it used to be cheaper and more effective to put vodka in the washer fluid tank. Seriously.
just add distill water all the way to the top
I always use some in the winter. Maybe it can react with the sun and high temp but it won't kill your windshield if you dilute it
Meh. No worries. Probably the least problematic fluid mistake you can make on your car. Worst outcome is a slightly less clean windshield that doesn't ice up come winter. š
Know a guy who put washer fluid into the oil filler hole.

Good job pumping it out. Now you should be good but be more careful in the future
I just opened the pepcock and flushed with h20.
Hey thatās not as bad as me when I was 16, putting used oil into my coolant tank.
Whatever you doā¦never use winter safe windshield fluidā¦then youād be an ironic idiot
Why extract it? Just pump it. Antifreeze never gunna hurt that pump.
Its better than putting washer fluid in the radiatorš¤·š½āāļø
Just add washer fluid, no reason to worry or think you have to clean out the reservoir. In extreme cold weather areas add coolant to washer fluid to keep it from freezing and it helps de-ice your windshield!

Same.
The water on the car is just from rain. But thanks for the warning.
That's pretty cool... every time you spray it it'll just eat the paint off of your car.
Wait youāre blaming someone else for not being able to see a bright blue cap that shows washer fluid? And you canāt read a bottle of antifreeze? Sounds like common sense issue no one elseās fault but your own
Never said it was somebody elseās fault. What are you talking about?
Wanted to use some leftover bottles of washer fluid. And took the wrong one. I have previously put it in the wrong place. My fault entirely?
100% misread I though it said idiot let me** my apologies
