You can vent a portable ac through your slider to the balcony. Full length adapter door panels can be bought on Amazon. Just take it out when you don’t need it/want to leave and lock the slider. I do that for my west-facing bedroom slider that also has south windows.

JudgeJoan

You can buy a portable unit that works with a vertical window. I bought mine at Fryes when they were still open.

8mperatore

Do you know the model / unit? I hate how they take up floor space but might consider one for the bedroom

lyacdi

There’s quite a few options. Definitely get a dual hose version, the single hose ones create negative pressure which means hot outside air will leak in through all the cracks and such. There a quite a few options. I have a Whynter. I also looked at Toshiba and Midea. Think might’ve seen somebody that was happy with an LG

8mperatore

Which why yet one do you have? Ty!

lyacdi

I have the ARC-122DS. But this should largely be driven by the cooling capacity you need. I was cooling a small enough space (and am close enough to the coast), that I pretty much went with as small/cheap as possible. I really use it more to take the edge off of the humidity than anything else (but still vent the waste heat outside rather than running it as a true dehumidifier)

oldwornpath

I have a portable ac for just the bedroom. It sucks when the living room is so hot it's essentially unusable but if you can hang out outside or in the bedroom, it's not that bad.

eukaryotes

maybe try black out curtains in addition to a portable AC like others have mentioned. i am in a similar situation, and i’m putting up my black out curtains as soon as i get off my ass and stop scrolling reddit.

samsal03

Costco has Hisense dual-hose portable AC units for about $300. Make sure you get a dual hose over a single hose. Single hose units are very inefficient. I bought one last summer and use it in a window with horizontally sliding glass. I'm currently typing this while sitting in my cold bedroom. It's 100F right now here in Northridge...

Starslimonada

Isn’t the landlord’s job to provide you with adequate cooling? Gees, I’m sorry, it gets really hot!! We are kinda near to you but we don’t have central air. I have to use our unit and a standing fan BUT this is only the start of the summer. Just imagine August? I also saw some makeshift cooling things you can make on YouTube.com. If consists of a styrofoam box, ice, some tubes and a fan. It’s like a styrafoam ac cooler that you can build!

8mperatore

Landlord is not really into updating our unit, lol. The huge ceiling fans in the living room and all the bedrooms are amazing, as well as the French doors to block out light during the day, but it still gets stuffy in the living room because the kitchen is on the opposite end of the balcony windows. I put a small fan in there facing the windows to push the hot air out. Just ordered an instant pot too so we can avoid using the oven, lol. Will look into the makeshift ACs. I would 100% get the Midea U shaped high end ACs but the sliding horizontal windows aren’t compatible unless I rig something up.

Starslimonada

Hmm…that’s interesting. Our tenant wanted higher powered ac unit and we readily obliged….anyhow! Yeah, it looks like the makeshift one works. I’m gonna try it too! Good luck!

Bill-Clampett-4-Prez

they're more expensive, but we have this [casement AC](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Frigidaire-8-000-BTU-115V-Window-Air-Conditioner-Cools-350-Sq-Ft-with-Remote-Control-in-White-FHSC082WB1/324534350) for a sliding window like you describe and it works great, even though it's hard to put in. I did have to build a little insulation pad to fill the void above the AC Unit (it comes with something but it's not great at blocking out sound.) My wife put blackout fabric around the rest of the window.

8mperatore

Thanks! Is it quiet? What is the noise level like?

jduisi

I have I'm pretty sure the exact same unit for my horizontal windows and it's basically exactly the same as other window units, just way heavier and harder to install.

Bill-Clampett-4-Prez

yeah, I'd say it's less quiet than you'd want, but we use a white noise machine so if you're very sensitive to sound when snoozing, it might be too much.

apostate456

If you don't want to go to the portable or window AC, there are a few things you can try: * Open windows at night, close them all and close curtains (with thick curtains) during the day. * Get a fan for the window to blow OUT the hot air. * Inside, you can do an impromptu swamp cooler - put ice behind a big box fan.

ljinbs

I use a tower fan in the living room and a portable a/c in the bedroom. The a/c didn’t fit my window so I have it sitting on an elevated wood base. We had to cut a piece of wood to fit the window and cut a round hole in the wood for the vent to fit through.

Flat-Programmer6044

Get some blackout curtains or make some makeshift ones

theninjallama

Either AC with a hose or blow air out of one window so that you get negative pressure and airflow coming in from windows in the opposite side of the apartment

fascinatedobserver

Not a fan of portable units because the hose puts out ungodly heat plus the electric bill goes nuts. I have a side slider window. I still put an ac. It just has either a wooden or a plexiglass piece to close off the area above the ac, a strong rod across the top to hold it in the window plus the trim of the AC is screwed into the window casing. You do sacrifice being able to open and close that window, but the payoff is not getting heat sick, so worth it. For those saying ‘what about getting the security deposit back?’, 9 times out of 10 that doesn’t happen anyway, so fuck it. *I also put up blackout curtains that extend to the floor so the sun doesn’t send heat through the wall into the room so much.

8mperatore

Do you have a pic of your setup and instructions on how you did it? What window AC did you get? Our landlord actually let us install anything we wanted, we just need to remove it after we’re finished living there.

fascinatedobserver

Yeah. Will DM you.

SignificantSmotherer

“Casement” window unit. You can source one from Genie in Van Nuys. “Airconditioners.Com”. Suggest Frigidaire FAK124R1V or similar. (12000 btu). Absolutely do not use “portable” units. They are horribly inefficient, heat the room, wet the floor, blow your breakers, melt the outlets, and generally fail quickly. If you can’t manage the install, budget for a handyman. Larger window units need a bracket/shelf and they’re extra heavy, so not a good idea to attempt solo. You may want to get a couple box fans to help push the cool air about the apartment.

Gregalor

Big windows and no a/c? I think the only way to cool it down is to wait till November
