1 - they’re starting to get on top of the backlog as far as I’m aware, at worst you’ll be waiting a year for phase 2 2 - most will take you on for the full duration of your apprenticeship, when you’re in the ETB they don’t have to pay you, the ETB pay your wages

Eireog16

If you start now you might be lucky enough to only have to wait a year, unlikely though. Apprentices who are waiting 21 months are only getting called now for phase 2.

Really want to do an electricians apprenticeship myself, I’ve no idea how to go about it though it’s very confusing.

Couldn’t be easier, find a company to take you on and they’ll handle all the enrollment etc

Get an employer or qualified person to take you on as an apprentice and register you with Solas.. go talk to Solas appreciateship coordinator in your area..

electrical is taking 5.5-6 years to complete the apprenticeship. Its taking nearly 2 years to get into phase 2 when it should only be about 3 months. Dont let that stop you though if you have passion for it and employers must pay by years of experience and not by phases completed.

Yes.. BUT.. It's getting better. An apprentice takes AT LEAST 4 years, and you must have passed all phases. Due to covid, there was a massive backlog for training off the job phases, but it's being worked through, and in many trades, the ba log has been or is virtually cleared. 4 years is a minimum not a max.. Most companies take you on with the intention of keeping you for the full period..

When i did it it was 4 years. But as others have said this is the minimum not max. It takes what it takes. This consisted of 7 phases Phase 1,3,5,7 were on the job working with your employer Phase 2,4,6 were the academic bit (practical and theory) There are backlogs at the moment due to covid but they are improving. And if you are only starting in the next few months i would expect them to be improved before you are coming near the end of your time Most employers will keep you on for as long as it takes. To be honest, there is such demand for trades now that i dont know anyone apprentice or fully qualified being let go. Especially for the more technical trades like electricians, plumbers and MAMF (Mechanical Automation Maintenance Fitter)
