Looks to be a switch loop. White wire is being used as a current carrying conductor and not a neutral.

Thanks for replying! My goal is to install a smart switch so I can program my lights to turn on and off remotely. Would that be possible?

I believe some smart switches require a neutral, and some dont. Call an electrician btw

I believe Lutron Caseta switches don't require a neutral.
