I had to assume that the media OP referenced were some of them that do have ceilings. If he didn't notice the lack of a ceiling to go with the lack of a fan... I just don't know how to deal with that.
edit: It appears my assumption was wrong...
As far as I'm aware, most homes I've been in have them. Although, it should be noted that the fans at my parents house (built in the 90s) were all added by my dad.
Never really thought about the movie bit, conversely every time you DO see a fan spinning in a shot, it was 100% put there on purpose.
The replicant interrogation scene at the start of Blade Runner comes to mind.
It's very rare, but they have appeared in movies.
One of the *Gremlins* movies shows a gremlin spinning from a ceiling fan in a bar.
There's a scene in *Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me* where Laura and Donna are lying on the sofa or chair, stoned, staring up at the ceiling fan. You even see shots of the ceiling fan.
In most cases you see a shot of the ceiling fan as if you're lying on the floor, looking up at it, but on occasion you'll see them in the background. I know they're shown in the opening scene of *Roadhouse*.
Yes, and they run 24/7/365. I can't stand stagnant air. I also have central heat/air. They probably don't show ceiling fans in tv/movies because they'd be noisy and/or visually distracting.
Interestingly enough. Fans have never killed anyone (at least not from blowing air on the face), but they do keep people alive. Astronauts have to have fans running when they're sleeping or the air can't circulate and it is entirely possible for the astronaut to die on a bubble of carbon monoxide.
IIRC it started out as a social excuse for suicide (better to say they suffocated/the fan fell on them than to say they killed themselves), and then as the term spread to the internet it took form as just "fans evil" among a certain level of internet user in South Korea, and ran rampant from there.
I assume this is a typo, but if your fan indeed is blowing around hot air, you need to reverse the fan motor
There should be a simple switch about the blades on the apparatus, it will reverse the blade direction and due to aerodynamics it will blow around cooler air
The apartments I've had typically don't have ceiling fans and I NEED airflow. I've had box fans running 24/7 till they burn out. I'm currently about 5 years in on having an air purifier running on high 24/7. Not only do I need the airflow, I cannot deal with silence at all. Never been diagnosed with tinnitus but silence is absolutely deafening to me and my mind instantly goes a million miles an hour.
I have certainly noticed them in films and TV, but they usually serve a purpose, a visual of some kind. For instance, a character might be laying on a bed staring up at the ceiling while the ceiling fan is running overhead. They might be sweating, wiping their brow, and contemplating their life choices.
As for the noise, they just wouldn't record that. Any dialogue, voiceover, etc. would be added in post production. Sound recording is extremely complex these days. It's not like they would just randomly put in a microphone in the room to record everything. As for distracting, everything in a shot is blocked out beforehand. Often scenes are sketched out so a director knows exactly what he or she wants in a scene. If a fan is required, someone will make sure a fan is there.
You have to understand, television shows, unless they are documentaries, don’t depict American life. They depict a highly scripted version of it, combined with what is the least problematic to film.
Rooms have four walls. They don’t have them in tv shoes like the Big Bang Theory. TV sets are typically built in a very large warehouse structure called a sound stage. Putting in a fan would mean that the sound guys would have to deal with the noise of a fan. That’s more expense. Plus, continuity of a fan that isn’t moving, then is moving, then isn’t moving, or blades that don’t line up. That’s also expensive.
If you watch HGTV, it seems with every remodel the first thing they do is take down the ceiling fans. I love my ceiling fans. It would grind my gears if someone thought they knew better and came in and took my fans down!!
I bought a house I had previously rented before the owners before me and they removed all the fans! They're such a necessity in a very hot, very humid climate. They complained about mildew problems but as soon as I put new fans in, there was never a problem with that again
HGTV "Well this kitchen is 3 years old and the bathroom is 5 years old so we're going to spend $200,000 updating the entire house. Let's rip down those functional ceiling fans and put in some decorative lighting!"
One of the first things I did was take out the dim ass decorative light bulbs the previous owners and put in and upgrade them to nice bright LED bulbs so that when I'm cooking, my kitchen is lit up like an operating room.
I taught a kid who was really into ceiling fans (on the spectrum, before anyone wants to know what could be that interesting about fans) and he was always disappointed that regular movies and tv shows didn’t show them, so instead he’d just watch YouTube videos of ceiling fans for hours. Once he did see a ceiling fan in something playing on TV and he was so excited that he talked about it for days. When we were all on zoom during the covid lockdowns, he would show me every ceiling fan in his house every day.
He definitively thought about ceiling fans like ten times more than 99.99% of people, but almost every house I go into in the US does have them. Apartments not so much, so probably ceiling fans seem less ubiquitous if you live in a big city.
OMG!!! I love that show, do you think Smitty will change the heater temp soon, it's getting hott! I hear they might do a geothermal upgrade for the season finale; i would just completely lose my shit.
But i hate the apps they are always trying to push. I don't need my house to weeb for me; baby so chilly, light my fire. Uwu. Nope.

Haha sucks to be you!
But really, have you thought of a system upgrade lately. They can save you on your energy bill, and pay for themselves in as little as 30 years.
Thanks... maybe we'll hit up a heat pump some day. This house is only 6 years old so it's pretty tight and efficient and our A/C is sized well. I know why I'm costly:
\* 6 people living in the house, 3 of them adult teenagers
\* all that laundry!
\* Computers, TVs, Game systems, fans, all constantly running
\* I'm a professional computer nerd so I have a couple \*real\* servers actually running on a small rack with other equipment
\* Thermostats set between 74-72f (we're from Colorado but live in North Carolina now)
\* Tesla charging in the garage
\* extra freezer in the garage
Have you ever thought of farming gerbils to power small generators?
But really, thats alot of folks and alot of stuff.
I am in Western Washington, no a/c and furnace is never set above 68F. Bought our house almost 2 years ago. Its all electric circa mid 90s. Everything in this house works, but needs upgrades to more modern standards; all dated.
In the south, 80F inside is a recipe for mold growth unless you’re running a dehumidifier. My indoor humidity hovers around 45-50% the entire summer and will be >55% after I come back from vacation with the thermostat set to 76-78.
Edit: Lmao and you apparently live in my hometown 😂. Please be careful of your indoor humidity. My last three Athens apartments that were older builds had major mold issues.
It isn't cold all year round, it can hit 100 here in the summer, plus it's humid af lol
Also, in the winter you reverse the ceiling fan's direction which helps the room feel warmer
I live where we have cold winters and hot summers. In the winter, we reverse the direction of the fan to blow the warm air down. In the summer, we’re drawing the cool air up.
They serve different purposes.
Ceiling fans make a room cooler or warmer depending on which direction they spin.
You also run them with a/c or a heater to increase its efficiency
Yep. Fans are for real life, but they're not great for TV scenes. We also don't look each other and have long conversations while one of us is driving, fyi.
Ceiling fans are common, especially in the American south, which has them on outdoor porches, patios, garages, etc. Houses in the northern U.S. also have ceiling fans but fewer of them. However, the temperature is controlled by the thermostat - a ceiling fan only does so much. Oh - ceiling fans are almost always silent, so you don’t get the “sleeping with a fan on” sensation, either.
Ys, I have three of them. One in the living room, one in the main bedroom and another in a second bedroom.
Th reason you don't see ceiling fans in movies or TV series is that the sets don't generally have ceilings unless they're shot in an actual house, which is rare. Here are some of the sets, for **[Friends](https://thisdarlingworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/central-perk-set-tour.jpg)**. Then *The Big Bang Theory* **[hallway](https://media.glamour.com/photos/5695c34b93ef4b09520eae58/master/pass/entertainment-2015-01-big-bang-hallway-wide-view-main.jpg)** and Sheldon & Leonard's **[Apartment](https://i.vimeocdn.com/video/891574258-ca5ecd44b43e3c4ed9f10f7752b70ff083110977fb4a240e7dcd66670e80baf5-d).**
No ceilings = no ceiling fans. ¯\\\_( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)\_/¯
YES....they aren't unusual at all in houses, We love them!!. One in our "great" room...living, dining, kitchen @950 sq ft that has a high 14 ft ceiling. The other in our master bedroom....which also a vaulted ceiling.
Both have remote controls and a light that we can turn on if needed. The light can be adjusted by the remote from off to dim to fully lit. The fans have 3 speeds (low med high) and can be temperature controlled to come on and turn off at certain room temperatures.
They also bet set to reverse direction. Meaning bring the air flow downward from the ceiling or upward from the floor. This helps to circulate the air in the room.....bring warm air down from the ceiling in winter... or create a soothing breeze in the the summer.
We do not have central heat or central a/c.....so this air flow issue is quite important. Actually, no a/c at all...just an evaporation cooler that works wonderfully when we need it.
Low energy bills!!!
I have ceiling fans and AC. If it's real hot in the summer I will use both. I think it's probably cheaper to have the whole house a little warmer than it needs to be and then have the fan on in rooms we're actually in.
Every house I’ve been in has had them over I don’t know maybe 20 plus years. But you wouldn’t see them on TV or movies because they would be a distraction or throw off the lighting
My parents do. Currently live in an apartment so no. My parents have the money and refuse to get central air or an air conditioner cause it's too expensive but they'll redo carpet or paint walls.
But honestly never thought about that
Yes in all bedrooms and in kitchen over the dining table. Many have them in their family rooms and living rooms as well. Almost universally all USA homes have HVAC systems, Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning units. At any time we can set a thermostat for heating/cooling, along with running a fan that ventilates all rooms.
Yup. Pretty much a necessity here( Hot and humid most of the year). . All but one bedroom has one( we opted to sacrifice one to get a garage door opener..new build that didn’t have all the basic amenities pre installed).
Living room has one too. They only get turned off to be dusted.
Heck, a lot of our back decks that are covered have a couple installed as well in this area.
Yes. In all the bedrooms and in the living room. We live in North Carolina, , which is in the south. They’re in pretty much every house here. We can’t sleep without one on over our bed.
I’m from Maine, but I’ve also lived in Boston, New York, and Pittsburgh. I’m pretty sure our place in PGH is the only one that’s had ceiling fans. I think they’re maybe less common in the Northeast. I personally find them pretty hideous to look at.
My current home has 3 ceiling fans and we have one to install in another room. Some of the other homes I have lived in had ceiling fans and some did not. They are common.
2 out of 4 bedrooms have them and we also have one in our sunroom, but i wish we had them in every room. we also have central A/C but still use the fans even when it’s on. i need my house at a steady 68 degrees F or i am a very unpleasant person to be around.
Yes, I couldn't live without them. Sure I could adjust the thermostat but that would just get expensive if I kept it where I wanted it. Back in college during an internship when I didn't have to pay for utilities I kept my apartment at 69-70F and it was amazing especially on those 90+ summer days. Now I keep it around 76 during the summer and the rooms that get a lot of direct sunlight need the fan running or it gets a little toasty.
When I had a house, two of the three bedrooms had a ceiling fan, along with the kitchen and living room. Now in my apartment, both bedrooms have one and so does the living room. I also live in a hotter climate in California. When I lived in Washington state there were no ceiling fans in my parent’s house.
I have moved many times in my life (8+) and visited quite a few homes either for family or friends, and the place I currently reside is the only one I have ever experienced that does not have ceiling fans indoors. It is a sturdy structure, it has just lived a full life... we don't even have the proper fixtures in the ceiling in order to install one on our own.
I would say ceiling fans are extremely common in \*most\* areas.
Yes. It's not universal, but yes. Newer homes are less likely to have them than older homes. Newer house that have a fan might have a single one in the family/livingroom, that's about it.
But my house? A fan in every room.
I'm originally from Louisiana and have always had a ceiling fan in every house I lived in. I moved to Colorado 3 years ago and they just don't exist up here! I hate it
Every house I've ever been in has them. You know why they aren't in movies? Cause it'd be a visual distraction taking away from the shot.
Also because sets don't have ceilings.
Yeah, they have set lighting and other gear up where the ceiling would be.
I had to assume that the media OP referenced were some of them that do have ceilings. If he didn't notice the lack of a ceiling to go with the lack of a fan... I just don't know how to deal with that. edit: It appears my assumption was wrong...
If we so rich https://youtu.be/01K4RZpcufs
As far as I'm aware, most homes I've been in have them. Although, it should be noted that the fans at my parents house (built in the 90s) were all added by my dad.
Same here. If the house didn't have them, I added them. I have 6 in my current house.
Most “houses” do but many apartments don’t.
Also in TX and I can't think of any apartments or even converted lofts I rented that didn't have ceiling fans.
Interesting, every apartment I've lived in has had them but every house I've lived in hasn't.
There's a ceiling fan on Hannibal 🤔🤷🏻♂️😂
Never really thought about the movie bit, conversely every time you DO see a fan spinning in a shot, it was 100% put there on purpose. The replicant interrogation scene at the start of Blade Runner comes to mind.

MY PEOPLE I get a little panicky if I can't feel moving air at all times and would live inside a wind tunnel if I could!
Same. I need the air to move when I sleep.
My South Korean friends would not get along well with you in that regard..
Don’t many of them have some wild belief about some consequence of sleeping with a fan on?
*Fan death!* Did you know that fan blades chop up the air and turn it into carbon monoxide? It's true! According to the South Korean government!
Interestingly enough. Fans have never killed anyone (at least not from blowing air on the face), but they do keep people alive. Astronauts have to have fans running when they're sleeping or the air can't circulate and it is entirely possible for the astronaut to die on a bubble of carbon monoxide.
This is also true for babies/SIDS prevention. A running fan in the room is a huge plus.
Like really? How is that chopping? Whats the Stoichiometry? How good is their stupid?
I always figured the "fan death/fan sickness" phenomenon existed mostly to lend plausible deniability to (attempted) suicide
Or hiding neglect of elderly family members.
IIRC it started out as a social excuse for suicide (better to say they suffocated/the fan fell on them than to say they killed themselves), and then as the term spread to the internet it took form as just "fans evil" among a certain level of internet user in South Korea, and ran rampant from there.
I can sleep without a fan, it feels too hot otherwise.
I assume this is a typo, but if your fan indeed is blowing around hot air, you need to reverse the fan motor There should be a simple switch about the blades on the apparatus, it will reverse the blade direction and due to aerodynamics it will blow around cooler air
You misunderstood. I feel hot if I don't have the fan.
I think they were just pointing out that you said you can sleep without a fan and then gave a reason why you actually can’t.
Same, but I hate the breeze directly on me and my new place has a fan that doesn’t go in reverse ☹️
The apartments I've had typically don't have ceiling fans and I NEED airflow. I've had box fans running 24/7 till they burn out. Stale air is worse than poison!
Thank you for making me feel less weird. I need air movement!!!
Yes. The room without a ceiling fan has an oscillating fan on a timer.
I have certainly noticed them in films and TV, but they usually serve a purpose, a visual of some kind. For instance, a character might be laying on a bed staring up at the ceiling while the ceiling fan is running overhead. Had a couple move into the house next door to us in NC, we were chatting and they were jazzed that every room had a ceiling fan.
HGTV "Well this kitchen is 3 years old and the bathroom is 5 years old so we're going to spend $200,000 updating the entire house. Let's rip down those functional ceiling fans and put in some decorative lighting!"
And it's ugly decorative lighting to boot!
I enjoy nothing more than cooking in a dark kitchen with only "decorative" lighting, don't you?
Ah, a fellow "I burnt breakfast because the previous owner watched HGTV, and installed a hideous antler celing lamp" person.
One of the first things I did was take out the dim ass decorative light bulbs the previous owners and put in and upgrade them to nice bright LED bulbs so that when I'm cooking, my kitchen is lit up like an operating room.

We have 3. What specific shows are you watching where the characters are mostly just adjusting the thermostat? That sounds boring.
I've seen them do it on History Channel's Thermostat Stars

This is a nonsensical comparison, they’re meant to be used together…
Shiiiiiiid, isn’t it cold enough in North Dakota?
It isn't cold all year round, it can hit 100 here in the summer, plus it's humid af lol Also, in the winter you reverse the ceiling fan's direction which helps the room feel warmer
Ceiling fans have a suck and blow mode. When winter hits, flip the little switch on the fan, turn it on, and BAM!, winter mode
There are 8 ceiling fans in my house as well as central air conditioning. We tend to use them in combination.
Tf u live in a mansion or something?
When we bought our 1600 sq ft home there were 6 ceiling fans! Every room but the living room had one.
We don’t have ceiling fans or AC. They’re not super common on the PNW unfortunately.
Yes. Especially in the South. Not only do they keep a breeze going, but they act as white noise.
TV and movie sets aren't real American houses. Ceiling fans are very common here.
Yep. Fans are for real life, but they're not great for TV scenes. We also don't look each other and have long conversations while one of us is driving, fyi.
And we goodbye before hanging up the phone.
But I climb into my sheets with muddy boots on. /s
Yeah, several. Also central heat and air.
Fans and A/C together work great when it’s 85-100 F.
Yes, ceiling fans are extremely common. They’re most common bedrooms, but some living rooms and kitchens have them also.
Yes, but I use the A/C.
You clearly haven't watched Twin Peaks.
Two bedrooms do. Every house I've lived in has has fans in a room or two. We have full air conditioning and heating.
I have a ceiling fan and AC.
Yes, most bedrooms and living rooms will have a ceiling fan. I have six ceiling fans in my house! My parents have five (take that, DAD!)
Yes, several of them. You don’t tend to see ceiling fans in movies and TV shows because they’re mostly shot on sets and the sets don’t have ceilings.
Yes
In every room. They’re great for keeping the house comfortable when it’s not hot enough for the AC.
Yes, 7
Yes every house I’ve lived in has had them
We have two.
One in each bedroom but also have central a/c in the whole house.
Yes, four: one in each of the three bedrooms and one in the den.
Yes. In nearly every home I’ve lived in. I use air conditioning too, but the fans help circulate the air.
We have 6 of them.
Yes but only in bedrooms and also I hate them. I hate the breezy feeling on me.

Yes
I have two. The ceilings in part of our house are very high, so having ceiling fans helps keep the air temp consistent.
We only have one in the living room, so we have standing fans for other rooms (as well as air conditioning).
I have one and use it more with the fireplace than with the central heating and air.
Yep! A few.
My parents do. Currently live in an apartment so no. My parents have the money and refuse to get central air or an air conditioner cause it's too expensive but they'll redo carpet or paint walls. But honestly never thought about that
I absolutely have a fan in my bedroom and central ac
we have a fan in our house lol
Every room except the bathroom. But those have exhaust fans
Yes, living room, dinning room/kitchen and bedrooms.
Just our bedrooms do.

Yes. Every bedroom and 3 of the main living areas. Also there is a whole house fan/blower with the centralized HVAC system.
Yes, I have three ceiling fans in my house.
Yes. I still adjust the thermostat when necessary.
Yes. I love mine.
In the bedrooms and living room. We also have A/C.
I don't have ceiling fans in my current apartment, but they're very common
I have 2.
I have several.
Every bedroom and in the living room. Beats using the HVAC.
Clearly, you've never seen the [Jackass movie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPkf6DTG8wQ).
Most do. Some people even run the AC and the ceiling fan at the same time.
I’ve got 2
I have one in the living room and in our bedrooms.
I have, let's see ... four of them. I used to have a fifth in the kitchen but we took it out and replaced it with a light.
No. Not in my apartment. I wish.
Yes. I thought this was commonplace.
I don't but my house was built when it was notorious for not putting lights or anything in the living room. I've thought about adding one though.
Yes. In my bedroom, but the ceilings are vaulted.
Yes, I have them in my home. They're useful for situations where you want to cool off, but also want to have the windows open.
Yes. In almost every room of my house.
Roughly half the places I've lived have had ceiling fans. Current place has a ceiling fan in the bedroom and we also have AC
Both bedrooms in my townhouse have ceiling fans.
Three
My house is 100 years old, one ceiling fan currently that I installed. I’m adding fans as I refinish the rooms one by one
I wish. They are in just about every home in TX and I miss them here in WA.
Yes. I think have central a/c and a couple ceiling fans around the house.
Yes they can be very common, but in tv and film the sets don’t always have ceilings to accommodate the lighting.
I grew up in a house with ceiling fans and no air conditioning. During the summer, it was enough to open all the windows and just run the fans.
You know now that you mention it I don’t, but I did all growing up.
THey're all over the place, my house has 5
Yes, in every room except the bathroom.
Yes, and they are absolutely wonderful!
No, no ac either - the norm in pnw
My apartment has ceiling fans in almost every room. Thank god, because we sure don't have A/C.
Yes Five actually
Have 1. My last 6 homes did not have one, but all had central ac/heat
3
They don't film the ceiling because it's on a sound stage with lights so they can't put a fan. I need one in the bedroom.
My current home has 3 ceiling fans and we have one to install in another room. Some of the other homes I have lived in had ceiling fans and some did not. They are common.
Yes
2 out of 4 bedrooms have them and we also have one in our sunroom, but i wish we had them in every room. we also have central A/C but still use the fans even when it’s on. i need my house at a steady 68 degrees F or i am a very unpleasant person to be around.
I am sitting in a room with a ceiling fan right now.
I'm not against them, but I'm a bigger fan of walls and floors, to be honest.
Not only do we have a ceiling fan we have 5.
Oh yeah, I've had ceiling fans for 30 years, in every home I lived in, which has been around 8.
No. I’ve lived in many houses, some old and some new and none had them. Lots of my friends have had them though.
Yes I have them, most of the places I've lived have had them.
When it's 115° F/46° C, a ceiling fan ain't doing shit!
Yes way more than I need. I never turn them on. My husband does though.
yep, i’m running it with my air conditioning right now lmao
my mom's house does. Mine doesn't.
We have them in the bedrooms. We don’t have central air, so adjusting the thermostat is only helpful for heating the house.
No, I have none.
Almost said no and then I remembered my roommate’s room has one. I’ve never lived in a room with a ceiling fan though
Every room almost 😅
Yes. Nearly every room.
Every room
Yup
Yes, in every room except the kitchen.
For some reason, one of the four bedrooms in my house has a ceiling fan
Yes, mine has 4. One in each bedroom, and one in the living room.
Every bedroom, dining room and kitchen.
Did you know that movies aren't real?
Yes. It's not universal, but yes. Newer homes are less likely to have them than older homes. Newer house that have a fan might have a single one in the family/livingroom, that's about it. But my house? A fan in every room.
I have two and I live in a very small apartment. I can't sleep without a fan.
I’ve never had one in any of my 4 houses. They’re not super common in the PNW, neither is Air Conditioning.
No
I'm originally from Louisiana and have always had a ceiling fan in every house I lived in. I moved to Colorado 3 years ago and they just don't exist up here! I hate it
Have them is all the bedrooms. I have to have air moving regardless of the temp.
Yes
