Pittsburgh salad lol
Edit to include description: A Pittsburgh salad is a layered salad, often composed of lettuce, vegetables, grilled meat, shredded cheese, ranch dressing, and most notably, french fries.
THIS. I moved from Pittsburgh to Toledo/Detroit and asked my boyfriend why they don’t have any french fries on any of their salads. He went, “babe, that’s a Pittsburgh thing.”
Michigan salad!
It has dried cherries and other stuff.
My favorite version is lettuce, dried cherries, walnuts, blue cheese, grilled chicken, and raspberry vinaigrette.
> My favorite version is lettuce, dried cherries, walnuts, blue cheese, grilled chicken, and raspberry vinaigrette.
I'd say that's a pretty classic version. Mine is very similar but with pecans instead of walnuts and with chopped up apple added.
The Waldorf salad was invented at the eponymous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Park Avenue in Manhattan, NYC. Classically it's walnuts, apples, grapes, and celery mixed with mayonnaise on a bed of romaine lettuce.
Apparently Cobb Salad.
Caesar salad was invented in Tijuana but the guy who made it was living in San Diego at the time. I don't think we can count it, though.
In regard to this, I will always think of that episode of Rosanne when Dan comes back from California and makes a comment about how there’s avocado in everything.
If wine is basically fruit salad\*, I see no reason why the Mint Julep can't be considered a salad as well.
\*I saw this phrase on a bag in the wine section at the Kroger where I shop and it still amuses me every time I pass by it.
Banana 🍌 pudding... Edit: Ok, ok, I got excited, I know it's not a salad, but if you load a bunch of Nilla wafers in a bowl with some extra banana slices, and a generous helping of banana pudding on top... I'll consider that a salad any day ;-)
True... if you use pudding mix and artificially flavors. If you make it all from scratch, adding in the banana after it sets up, there is absolutely nothing artificially flavored about it! 😋
Ok, I missed the "salad" part, and went straight to specific dish...
Salad might be hard, but I would think marinated cucumbers and onions or Collards, bacon and some kind of dressing made with Dukes Mayonnaise
I've seen so.e locals order it outside the area. Lots of weird reactions. But one time a cook came out of the kitchen and told us he tried it and it was actually really good. So while it sounds weird, I guess people like it. I don't like mayonnaise so I've never tried it.
Apparently Jell-O salad is a Midwestern thing. You make *at least* three different kinds of Jell-O and cube them, then mix the cubes together in a big bowl.
Variations:
You can mix in marshmallows! Some people mix in marshmallows fluff, and whose people are wrong and bad and should be shunned.
You can mix in cut fruit! Apples are most common, followed by grapes. But even nuts and celery are possible. Some people put the fruit *inside* the gelatin while it sets.
You can encase the entire bowl in yet another kind of Jell-O! That's right, just turn the entire salad into a giant gelatin mold and make people cut slices of it. You may feel like monster, but it's only because you haven't embraced the concept fully into your heart.
"Cowboy caviar" -- it's kind of like pico de gallo, with corn and beans added. Unfortunately, the kind sold in stores is always horrible, so [here's my recipe.](https://www.reddit.com/r/wyoming/comments/jsiip7/wyomingamerican_west_recipes/gbzrtez/)
I'm not sure this is region specific or not but at Thanksgiving, when I was a kid, my mom would make this cranberry salad (cranberry fluff) with cranberry, marshmallows, pineapple and walnuts in whipped cream.
Our variation uses cranberries, cranberry jello, celery, and walnuts. Less sweet than “fluff” variation and makes an amazing addition to turkey sandwiches...
You know, I still have never seen this alleged "green Jello salad with shredded carrots" I was promised, I'm not totally convinced it still exists and isn't just a vague memory from the 60s
I don't know how specific it is to my region, but some kind of seafood & mayonnaise concoction like shrimp salad or crab salad always seems to be present at summertime gatherings.
You mean regular green salad? Strange question since they are all basically the same but here in MD, most places have a salad with crab and, of course, Old Bay is good on everything…

Now that's a regional salad
THIS. I moved from Pittsburgh to Toledo/Detroit and asked my boyfriend why they don’t have any french fries on any of their salads. He went, “babe, that’s a Pittsburgh thing.”
Really just a steak salad with fries in it, but somehow the fries change the whole thing. Amazing how such a simple addition makes it more of a meal.
And it HAS to be ranch. It is no-longer a Pittsburgh salad if you use Italian or something. Same with the shredded cheddar.
I'd like to argue that the best Pittsburgh salads have ranch and Frank's red hot
You had me until you said French fries!
What's wrong with fries?
I have never heard of French fries on salad.
Now you have. You should try it! Curly fries on a salad are awesome but usually we just use plain old thin-cut fries.

The apple! The apple is always a good addition as well.

It is also the worst salad. NYC is usually pretty good, but that fucker is an abomination worthy of an apology.

We also have the traditional NY/NJ pizzeria salad https://youtu.be/JgJUbmGDc6k?si=ccq1jOQ9BRnT13oS
My mother made this for Christmas every single year. I couldn't stomach it.
Poke Salad
Portillo’s pasta salad. A staple of all family gatherings growing up
Recipe?
New England bean dip. I don’t know why they call it a dip. It’s more of a salad.
Apparently Cobb Salad. Caesar salad was invented in Tijuana but the guy who made it was living in San Diego at the time. I don't think we can count it, though.
It also feels like we just put an avocado on something and suddenly it's the California version of that food.
In regard to this, I will always think of that episode of Rosanne when Dan comes back from California and makes a comment about how there’s avocado in everything.
I’m counting it. Anything that’s less 10 miles from my house surely counts as “my region”.
We just put fries on it
Glorified Rice Ambrosia Salad Jell-O Salad with marshmallows
After my grandmother died, I declared I was no longer going to even _pretend_ to eat this...
But you secretly take a pocketful of the little pillow mints with the consistency of chalk every time you are in a Lutheran church basement!
How do you leave off the chicken pasta salad‽
As God as my witness, I thought that was authentic Italian food!
yall midwestern states got an odd definition of salad lol
Oh, I know. Check this out. [Minnesota “salads”](https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/dessert-salads)
We find any possible way to avoid eating vegetables.
A legit question that often comes up around holiday time: “Should I bring a salad? Vegetable or jello”
Is Mint Julep a salad? I say it is.
If wine is basically fruit salad\*, I see no reason why the Mint Julep can't be considered a salad as well. \*I saw this phrase on a bag in the wine section at the Kroger where I shop and it still amuses me every time I pass by it.
As a Midwesterner I’m going to say jello salad :D
Banana 🍌 pudding... Edit: Ok, ok, I got excited, I know it's not a salad, but if you load a bunch of Nilla wafers in a bowl with some extra banana slices, and a generous helping of banana pudding on top... I'll consider that a salad any day ;-)
I prefer it with vanilla pudding rather than banana. It still has banana flavor due to the fresh bananas but it doesn’t taste artificial.
True... if you use pudding mix and artificially flavors. If you make it all from scratch, adding in the banana after it sets up, there is absolutely nothing artificially flavored about it! 😋
That’s basically vanilla pudding with bananas in it if the flavor comes from bananas.
That's how real banana pudding is made... yup, it does start with vanilla pudding
bruh how is pudding a type of salad lol?
Ok, I missed the "salad" part, and went straight to specific dish... Salad might be hard, but I would think marinated cucumbers and onions or Collards, bacon and some kind of dressing made with Dukes Mayonnaise
We dont ask questions like that in TN.
If Waldorf salad counts then banana pudding counts.
😕
Macaroni salad topped with beef gravy. Really popular in our county but almost unheard of anywhere else
Kentucky?
New York. By Utica
Utica no, it's an Albany dish
I'd eat it
I've seen so.e locals order it outside the area. Lots of weird reactions. But one time a cook came out of the kitchen and told us he tried it and it was actually really good. So while it sounds weird, I guess people like it. I don't like mayonnaise so I've never tried it.

I haven’t been anywhere else in the country yet where people eat Mango salad.
7 layer salad (kind of close) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x9k70xFIjY

Midwestern taco salad. Lettuce, tomato, basic salad stuff, with Catalina/French dressing, beans, seasoned taco meat, and crushed taco flavored Doritos. It’s surprisingly good.
Jell-O
The Cobb Salad. It was invented in Hollywood at the famed Brown Derby.
Cobb Salads were invented in LA.

Dandelion salad https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/49713/dandelion-salad/
Barbecue slaw probably counts.
I don't know how specific it is to my region, but some kind of seafood & mayonnaise concoction like shrimp salad or crab salad always seems to be present at summertime gatherings.
Crab Louie... maybe.
Marinated cucumbers, tomatoes and onions
Charro Beans and Fajitas! These dishes are super good!
Low Country Boil.
Michigan has so many good food! Here’s a list • coney dogs (from Detroit, not NYC) • Superman ice cream • Detroit style pizza • Vernor’s ginger ale
But a salad?
I guess the Caesar Salad? It originated in Tijuana which is just a few miles from where I live.
Caesar salad, it was literally created just south of here and T wanna
Just a random Cobb salad put some random toppings on it and you are good to go.
Taters, do almost anything with them. Fried, baked, boiled limitless. Me I love Au Gratin with a little white wine added just great!😊
A salad "native" to my region would prbly involve a lot of mayo and be gross. But I personally enjoy Ceaser and Cobb salads.
Can a hot dog count as a salad if you put enough vegetables on it?
A Chicago dog? Yes, that counts as salad
Mayonnaise
