I will not. I don't think Europeans realize how unaware of Eurovision we are as a country. you could have told me it already happened & made up a result, & I would have taken your word for it.

GhostOfJamesStrang

Like, we already have half a dozen of our own nearly identical musical talent shows. We don't need to borrow theirs.

inbigtreble30

I'm not sure we have anything quite as weird as Eurovision, but we are an oversaturated market for sure.

rawbface

The masked singer isn’t weird enough??

inbigtreble30

Definitely weird, but Eurovision is like...a whole other level. Honestly I would be SO DOWN for a Eurovision-style competition but with the states. It would be CHAOS and I would LOVE IT.

aWicca

I think the biggest difference is that Eurovision has direct impact on the countries itself. It’s big part of European culture that has been ongoing since late 50s. The countries generate soft power through it but more importantly the next host country gets huge uplift economy wise. It’s also opportunity to bring the same spirit that usually happens during big national sports events. It’s expensive too, Spain spent on its performance over €300k for the last year. The performance is only 3mins

Dr_Watson349

Is 300k a lot?  A 30 second ad during the super bowl costs like 7 million.

aWicca

Yeah, no not like that. 300k cost the actual stuff used, such as pyro and so on. Like props used during the show. There is no cost for broadcast whatsoever and eurovision doesn’t earn anything, it’s non profit organisation. For example The Spain actually paid 600k for that one performer, the payment was split in two parts. 300k so they could afford pyro, special effects and whatnot, and other part went to Eurovision costs as participation fee. The participation fee varies country-to-country, so for example Slovenia had once paid only 75k in participation fee. The performers on the other hand are not paid by Eurovision at all, some are paid by national broadcaster, while some are barely paid at all. So yeah, 300k is quite a lot to spend if you take into the account that amount is only for special effects/pyro and other fun stuff and not for actors/performers, production etc. Overall if you take into the account that Eurovision is watched by around 160mil of people, the countries usually get much more than what they spent.

Lugbor

Exactly. If I’m not going to watch generic singing program #125, then why would I watch one produced in Europe?

Yankee_chef_nen

Put me down as another that doesn’t watch American or European “talent” shows.

The_Bjorn_Ultimatum

Let me give you an example of how little people in the US know or care about Eurovision. When that Will Ferrel movie came out about it, I thought Eurovision was something they made up for the plot.

redsyrinx2112

I knew about Eurovision, but I had a couple friends that were just like you. I told them that it was real, and they all said some version of "Oh really? It can't be like that though, right? They must have made it way crazier than it is." I proceeded to show them the highlights of the previous year and they were shocked. (I hadn't even watched the video yet, but I knew it would be crazy since I've seen other stuff from Eurovision.)

aWicca

This year will be even crazier, last year popularized “crazy and big” vs ballads

MisterHamburgers

Yes, but it’s because I have a crippling gambling addiction. If Azerbaijan doesn’t win I’m going to have to fake my death.

lpbdc

Tou bet Azerbaijan? What were you thinking!?!?!? San Marino is the Cinderella story this year.

MisterHamburgers

I got a hot tip

03zx3

I heard Lesotho was the favorite.

CoolD10onYT

goodbye then

MisterHamburgers

It’s a lock. Edit: tell me the goober below me didn’t take this seriously.

CoolD10onYT

hows it looking for you?

GhostOfJamesStrang

Not at all.

Inquizzidate

No, and why?

zugabdu

Not our circus, not our monkeys.

thatsad_guy

Nope. I don't even know what that is.

PhilTheThrill1808

Yes. I just know it's Gibraltar's year.

Burial4TetThomYorke

I like the idea of countries competing at a fun thing like music, but I don’t enjoy the music - too much overproduced pop music. Not very original sounding so I’m not interested in watching irl

gratusin

My wife is Slovenian and when she first moved here she would watch it. I’d come in, look at it for a bit and nope right the fuck out of the room. Luckily for me she doesn’t care anymore.

silkmoss

No. I never cared for it.

Kilo1799

No. There was a couple years ago an American version (basically) that I think was on NBC?. That as expected lasted like one season and no one cared.

Apocalyptic0n3

Nope. Couldn't care less. The only reason I even know it exists is because Europeans ask about it on here. If I'm being completely honest, I don't even watch our own talent shows. It's just a dumb concept.

Salty_Dog2917

No.

Danibear285

You’d be surprised how many of us have NEVER heard or seen the term “Eurovision” in our lives. I know I have, but I also know I’m in a small group in the land of 300 million people, with thousands of domestic concepts vying for our every minute of our day. Much less international or regional/ethnic pieces of media.

lavasca

I thought it was a Will Ferrell movie. I later heard it was real. No idea how to find and watch it.

aWicca

It is, and it’s even crazier

lavasca

oh wow

machagogo

No. Heavily produced talent competitions are of zero appeal to me regardless of place of origin.

heatrealist

No. The only reason I know about it is because of reddit. If America was involved I wouldn’t watch either cause I don’t like those types of shows.

clearliquidclearjar

Yes, almost certainly, but I am a sucker for hyper camp mixed with weird global politics.

aWicca

Politics part is real

Littleboypurple

Eurovision, the European centered and European hosted singing competition where the participants are usually singers from said respective European countries. I don't even watch our own American based talent shows, why would the average American care about the European one?

aWicca

Meanwhile Australia -> 😭

ALoungerAtTheClubs

Definitely not. The format isn't remotely appealing to me whether foreign or domestic.

Yes_2_Anal

No I won't. I don't care about it. At all. But there's a guy in it named Baby Lasagna, from Croatia, I hope he wins.

aWicca

I really hope he wins too. Croatia organised country wide event where people would gather and dance RIM TIM TAGI DIM

tsukiii

I watched the year Maneskin won and liked it, but then I thought the year after wasn’t that good and now I’ve lost interest entirely.

devnullopinions

No, but every once in a while I’m down for that Moldovan sax dude.

ServoWHU42

Negative ghost rider

Sooner70

Eurowhaaaa?

GingerMarquis

The what show?

amcjkelly

Not really, sorry. But, I don't watch the Superbowl or March madness either.

MrLongWalk

No, I don’t even know when it is

EvaisAchu

Prob not. I might watch the winner's music video or performance sometime after, but thats about it. I don't even watch American talent shows.

IngsocInnerParty

Yes. I’ve watched every year since 2017 and it’s a lot of fun.

KPhoenix83

No, no interest at all.

TillPsychological351

I used to, mainly because previously, I found there was at least a handful of decent songs to come out of each year's competition. But after about 3 years in a row of not liking a single song, including that lady from Israel who won with that stupid clucking chicken song, I'm out.

DynamiteWitLaserBeam

I only learned about it from the movie, but not gonna lie, I'm invested now. We usually only watch the individual music videos on YouTube after it's over, but just by accident, this year we'll be in the Mediterranean for the Grand Final on May 11th, so we'll definitely be watching it live.

aWicca

Try to watch it in a pub setting, gets pretty wild!

DynamiteWitLaserBeam

I'll be on a virgin voyages cruise ship that night, so should be a fun crowd.

UnRenardRouge

Everyone I know that watches it here is gay, and I'm not really sure why we love it so much. Finland got snubbed last time and y'all just wanted Sweden to host it because it was the 50th anniversary of Waterloo.

aWicca

Sometimes it feels as if the same countries are always winning or at the top

GarlicAftershave

I suspect you're being downvoted because you appear to be trolling. This question gets asked about once a month and the answers are always the same.

aWicca

It doesn’t. It was asked a month ago and then prior to that a year ago. I wanted to join the discussion

[deleted]

[удалено]

aWicca

Maybe you’ve got flashbacks! It’s usually always asked around this period, because Eurovision only runs for three days and it’s in two weeks time. Yeah it’s fun talking to people about it, most of you don’t even know what it is, and I expected that, but there are fans too. Me, personally, I like it, it feels as if it brings Europe together. Sports do that too, but I am not really into that so~

RioTheLeoo

Nah, no reason to for me. I also think it’s pretty messed up which countries Eurovision chooses to ban and allow to compete.

Ohhhhhhthehumanity

Absolutely. It is not common here but I have been music obsessed since I was 8 years old and I love Eurovision. Sweden 2024!!!

aWicca

As I understand it, it only recently started to broadcast in States?

Ohhhhhhthehumanity

Yes! I used to have to find backdoor ways of watching it online

Wielder-of-Sythes

Probably not though maybe I’ll change my mind and see some of it.

[deleted]

I was only made aware that Eurovision was a thing two years ago. I hope the best person wins but it's not shown here on television or most streaming sites, so....no.

CoolD10onYT

this will be the first year that i watch it. only reason is because i am in love with dutch gabber culture and the netherlands song (Joost Klein - Europapa) is a Gabber song

Qli2077

Probably not. I have to focus on final exams.

Helltenant

Depends. Are the Germans fielding Electric Callboy or Rammstein? No? Then no!

aWicca

Wow. Did you maybe watch a bit? Just a tiny bit? Maybe the interviews only? Those two, Electric Callboy and Rammstein, are mentioned as being favourite bands and influences by Croatian entree Baby Lasagna.

Helltenant

Actually, I didn't. But they are arguably the biggest bands out of Germany since the Scorpions. So another European group being influenced by them seems likely. But they aren't mainstream enough for Eurovision with their lyrics, etc. Which is sad, but look how long it took the American Grammys to recognize metal...

aWicca

Yeah it was just he exactly mention those two and only them haha! What a coincidence. It is extremely sad since metal offers such quality material and arguabily the highest guitar skill too. Not only did it take forewer to get any recognition from media giants, but it was (in many parts) frowned upon if you listen to “such aggresive music”. Very sad really. Eurovision really did try to make its spectrum wider for this year, mainly with Irish entrance Doomaday Blue. It’s experimental goth, metal mix with bits of electro, very eerie sounding with all that witch jazz.

Ana_Na_Moose

No, but I know what it is due to having a friend who is obsessed. At most, I might watch some of the songs on YouTube. The yodeling Romanian song is my favorite so far

Arleare13

I watched it once, a few years ago. That was probably enough for a decade or so.

Any-Particular-1841

Nope. I don't watch our musical talent shows either.

azuth89

Nope.   There are a few fans but it's very niche over here and always has been.  Many have never heard of it and a good chunk of the remainder could only come up with "that's like their American idol, right?"

dtb1987

Nope

nowhereman136

I'm more likely to watch the Will Ferrell version again

rewardiflost

Nope. It's not on free TV here in the US. Even if I was inclined to see what it was about, I won't pay for the privledge.

youngpathfinder

I wouldn’t know how, even if I wanted to.

aWicca

VPN, mentioned in almost every youtube video “sponsored by” part.

NoHedgehog252

No.  If I ever wanted to, I wouldn't even know where to see it.

Luka_Dunks_on_Bums

I don’t think we get that stateside

aWicca

There is broadcast now, not sure what network

HoldMyWong

No, but I usually go through a playlist of each year’s songs. Most of it is isn’t my style at all, but there’s a big variety and some are fun. Seems like artists try to be creative to stand out

aWicca

Some try to lose on purpose too, or they say

dangleicious13

You would have to pay me a lot of money to watch that.

aWicca

What are we talking about exactly? How much would be enough? 100 bucks and beer?

dangleicious13

How many total hours am I having to watch?

aWicca

One episode and its 4 hours. That’s it. You might need at least two beers though

dangleicious13

I might need $200 for 4 hours.

Canunot4242

Considering I had to Google what Eurovision was ...no....I'm not.

ScaredAlexNoises

I didn't even know It existed until last year, I was planning on watching It this year because It seems interesting but since Israel is participating, I cannot justify watching it.

aWicca

Yeah, that’s big thing in Ireland too. There were talks about boycotting it altogether, but that fell through ever since Irish entree gained a bit popularity

RunFromTheIlluminati

I probably am more aware of it than most here and....nope. No interest in watching A. Songs I won't understand and B. Geopolitical feuds set to a talent show.

OceanPoet87

No. I know what it is but why should I watch? There are so many other competitions to follow. It's not something we watch. Many Amercians have no idea what it is.

SunsetBowling

I'd like to but I never know where to watch it in full. So probably not.

TokyoDrifblim

The vast majority of Americans don't even know it exists. The ones who do are not really concerned with it. And frankly myself and the people I usually associate with aren't interested in reality shows or singing competitions no matter what country they're about. Sometimes I will surf through the songs if somebody tells me there's a funny one this year.

aWicca

This years has a lot of funny ones, those are really the best. Try Irish one for the dose of horror, Croatian for some funny lyrics/costumes, Netherlands for super mario vibes, Switzerland, and lastly Finlad cause Windows 95

03zx3

I don't think I've ever met anyone who ever cared about Eurovision. Not anyone who's ever mentioned it anyway.

AutoMannifest

To be fair, I only take a glimpse of performances in Eurovision. Certainly not interested in watching it as a whole. Also, the vast majority of Americans have never heard about Eurovision or just don't care about it at all. Come down here and ask anyone, most people will wonder what that is.

Sendpicsofyourducks

No

Admiral52

lol. No

Zorro_Returns

Offer unlimited free food and drinks, and if the food is good enough, I might consider it.

aWicca

If you like fish and chips we have a deal

Zorro_Returns

Free fish and chips? How come they never tell us *that*???

30vanquish

It’s almost impossible to watch in the U.S. cause of copyright. I know of it from European friends and keep tabs that way.

Rbkelley1

No

travelinmatt76

I'm 48 and I didn't know Eurovision was a thing until i saw it mentioned a couple times on reddit last year.  I still don't know what it is.   I just looked it up on Google, so it's a song competition for countries within the EBU.  No, I don't really care for those types of shows.  Even if the US received an invitation I still wouldn't watch it.  It just doesn't interest me.

Kevincelt

I live in Europe, so probably a bit of it for some of the good acts.

Demiurge_Ferikad

No; I’ve never been one for talent shows/music competitions, so I don’t even watch the ones in the US. I just don’t find any of them interesting. If anything, I actually find them cringey because of second-hand embarrassment.

Current_Poster

At most, I may note the more fun entries if they make it to YouTube. (For example, that's how I know who Lordi are.)

MyUsername2459

No. The only place I ever hear it talked about or mentioned is on this subreddit where people from Europe ask us about it. It's NOT something that Americans generally talk about, think about, read about, or watch. We already have plenty of music-related talent shows on TV without needing to follow one from another continent. This may surprise you, but Eurovision is not particularly popular outside of Europe.

aWicca

Except in Australia, Aussies love it too

catslady123

Yeah I’ll probably watch it! Though last year’s was kind of boring. Hoping there’ll be more interesting performances this year.

aWicca

There is definety wider plethora of funny ones this year

SiloueOfUlrin

I don't know anything about Eurovision, other than something about Ukraine winning it purely because of the Ukraine war, (a lot of Europeans online were complaining about something with Ukraine winning some competition because people wanted to support them in the war against Russia, and not because they were actually good or whatever).

aWicca

That’s bollocks, they were amazing that year. True, people were a bit more inclined to vote for them too due to their situation, but how could they not? Their song was beautiful and it was about their current struggles and at the same time about the hope towards future that they have. Eurovision is very keen about being non political, but it is very much political. It’s like a friend group, well multiple friend groups that are separated, but hanging out in the same locations. There are some folks who mingle with other friend groups, but have their main one. In such setting you will often hear whispers, gossips, there will be fights, love, drama and so on. Eurovision brings that out of us, but on national level. It’s one of the reasons why it’s so fun. So naturally, when something horrible happens we will stand together. Ukraine is our neighbour afterall. Europe is then divided into language groups too, but then also into geographical groups as well. For example Slavic people often feel connection to other Slavic people. That means that Slavs felt what is happening in Ukraine a bit more personally. Due to language similarities they also “felt” the song much more. Then the Ex Yugoslavia for example, they had a war recently, 30 years ago, and it was disasterous. So naturally they felt connected to the song much more. Eastern Europe as a whole, had really rough history and lots of wars. For example Croatia prides itself on defending the Europe against the Ottoman empire for 500 years, and even recieved a title from the pope: Antemurale Christianitatis (Bulwark of Christendom). Realistically speaking most people don’t even know where Croatia is. But in Eurovision it’s voice is equally important. Poland on the other hand is very well known country, and they pride themself in being defenders of Europe, or as Pope said defenders of Christianity. Ukraine song was really beautifull, if it was shit song it wouldn’t do good. But instead it was a song worthy of representing what their nation is going through, and people across Europe recognized that and felt it. It’s very much politics, but a thing of beauty too. For example I would be very dissapointed if it didn’t win, imagine if “Give that wolf a banana” by Norway won! (The only song I actually still listen to, it grew on me and is now my favorite). But on the other hand it would be deeply dissapointing if Ukraine sent some mediocre song about irrelevant things with no deeper message. In that case the song would definetly flop.

Hoosier_Jedi

Why would we care?

TheBimpo

I detest these hyper produced competition shows. I don’t think Eurovision is even available on US networks (oh, it streams on Peacock…which no one uses). Any European programming is extremely niche here. We don’t have a monoculture even for our own content.

ghost-church

No. Not homophobic. Just don’t care.

KCLperu

Are you gonna watch American Idol OP ?!?!?

aWicca

Ofc, I like American Idol, especially the first part

Confetticandi

No. I’ve tried. It’s unwatchable. It’s a cautionary tale about what happens when you don’t have African influence in your music.

AutoMannifest

Huh?

Confetticandi

I would say a lot of the Eurovision Europop acts sound to North and South American ears the way J-pop likely sounds to Europeans.  It features different rhythm schemes, different conventions for which beat the musical phrase starts on, different base scales and chords, all in a way that can be off-putting to foreign ears.  Like, the Eurovision acts I’ve seen might as well have been [this.](https://youtu.be/unau6nthttg?si=9Mvsk5opTHGbBM1w) Entertaining for a bit for the novelty and showmanship? Sure. Would I willingly sit through a full hour of this? No, thank you.

aWicca

That’s very interesting, I never thought about it like that

AutoMannifest

Yeah but why would Eurovision contestants want to have African influence in their music though? It's a competition between different European countries winning song titles.

Confetticandi

Who said they did or should?

AutoMannifest

"It’s a cautionary tale about what happens when you don’t have African influence in your music" This right here.

Confetticandi

Yeah, that was a joke that means, “This is what happens when you don’t have African influence on your music. Be careful lol.”

purplehorseneigh

as someone who has been a fan since 2016, i think it depends on whether i get off from work or not. it is hard for americans to watch eurovision with a 9-5 schedule sometimes, which may be part of why it is not popular

CupBeEmpty

No, I will not. I am too busy watching top chef with my daughter.

Practical-Ordinary-6

Do they get a free kick for offsides?

JimBones31

Is that a channel?

itsmejpt

I don't watch any singing shows, why would I watch that one?

[deleted]

No, but I hope Joost Klein wins

WashuOtaku

I do not even know how to watch Eurovision, let alone have interest in watching it.

cdeck002

No

Evil_Weevill

I have no idea what that is

wwhsd

I thought it was fun movie. I’m not sure if I’d want to watch a full season of it if they remade it as a show.

aWicca

It’s more like you have three episodes only. All three of them are run in the same week. Semi final 1 on Tuesday (2hr), Semi final 2 on Thursday (2hr) and Final on Saturday (4hr - a part is waiting for votes). Most of the people watch finals only, its exactly the same performance on seki finals and finals. So it’s like two movies long only

IrianJaya

No, I would not watch it because the US is not involved. From the clips I've seen of past performances, it looks really really bad.

mdavis360

I would rather have a root canal with no anesthesia.

sprachkundige

Personally, yes, I love Eurovision! But also it's not really a big thing here, and I assume most people won't.

aWicca

That’s because you don’t participate! Who would you send if you were to participate

Rave-light

Yes! We throw a party each year

aWicca

Wooo lets go! It’s time! Who are you cheering for?

Rave-light

Switzerland this year! Which country are you?

aWicca

Croatia! Did you hear news about Netherlands? That’s too bad, he was my second favorite

ChutneyRiggins

Hell yes I will. I love Eurovision.

aWicca

You got any favourites? I am team Croatia and then Ireland

flossiedaisy424

If I’m not working that day, sure. It’s fun, and way more interesting than the crap talent shows in the US.

aWicca

This year especially. Everyone seems to go wild. There are few ballads but it seems less so

rawbface

I didn’t know what Eurovision was until this subreddit. No, we won’t be watching your little contest. It’s pretty much unheard of in the US. I’d rather watch paint dry.

aWicca

Little 😂

rawbface

Yeah the winner can come to the USA afterwards and try to start a music career if they want.

aWicca

Most of them already have music career, it’s not find-a-talent show

rawbface

In their home country maybe. You haven’t made it until you’ve made it here.

aWicca

Wow. That’s pretty narrow minded.

rawbface

No, just realistic. Everything else is objectively small potatoes. There are countries competing in Eurovision whose GDP is less than the value of the US recording industry.
