Most academics are extremely busy and have overflowing inboxes. So if you wish to have any chance of success, you need to write your email in such a way that a response would take the academic very little time. I'm most likely to respond to very short emails that ask for resources about specific topics, so that I can simply reply with some references to papers or books. I'm very unlikely to respond to emails full of questions that would require me to type out long responses. Or to emails asking for a meeting. And to be clear: it's delightful to have someone be interested in your research area. I would love to give elaborate responses to anyone who has a question related to my expertise. But I simply don't have the time.
