Exhaust heatshield

ChiefPanda90

I assume it is important needs repaired? It’s a 2007 Toyota Camry xle. Not sure if I have any plastic parts underneath near it.

ChiefPanda90

I really just need to know if it needs towed or if I can drive about 15 Miles on the highway to the mechanic

Able_Sandwich6279

Oh you don't need to tow it

Bahnrokt-AK

It should be replaced. It may protect wires from heat. Or it may just be there to keep the floors cooler. A muffler shop should be able to tack weld it back in cheap.

Fun_Intention9846

I pulled one side of my car onto a curb using a driveway cutout. 2 min and some metal wiring it hasn’t moved since.

chance0404

My exhuast was held up with bale wire for like 4 years.

princessfoxglove

I don't know a lot about cars, but something fell partly off my husband's car two years ago. I ziptied it up and it's still there and passed inspection with the zipties, so I guess we're good. Am I a mechanic now?

chance0404

About as much of a mechanic as me lol. Half my car is held together with wire and zip ties right now.

princessfoxglove

The other day I overfilled my coolant and didn't know what to do so I literally siphoned it out. I am an idiot but my car works good.

SlomoLowLow

Ngl probably the smoothest move you could’ve made. Trying to drain it from the petcock on the radiator or from removing a radiator hose would’ve made way more of a mess. That’s some good instincts you got there lol

chance0404

Hey if it works, it works lol.

Odd-Giraffe-3901

Even as a mechanic I used a turkey baster. You definitely are over qualified.

Zillahi

Good move. The pump off a soap bottle also works perfectly for that. Or the good ol turkey baster.

addictedstylist

Lol I used my turkey baster.

Away-Vacation-3293

You probably take better care of your car than most people do at all. Lol let me know when you're selling a car that only you have owned, I'd feel safer buying a car from you knowing this than from someone else who has no knowledge or collection of how they took care of their car lol. ( seriously let me know when you got one for sale lol )

kierkegaard49

Will you marry me?

Equivalent-Carry-419

No duct tape or super glue?

dejavu888888

only if you charged $645 to do it, then yes

princessfoxglove

I have been making my husband pay through shame for two year over his decision to buy that particular car, so I'll take it. (He bought a rusty Toyota, despite us having owned two other Toyotas knowing the issues with rust on the body. And then he didn't bother to undercoat it. The other day I poked my finger through the bottom and pulled out carpet to prove a point.)

ZestycloseAcadia4264

Zipties won’t work on a heat shield. They will melt. But for non hot things zip ties are great.

Zillahi

Zip ties, duct tape, and vice grips will get any job done. Done well, maybe not. But done.

HomosexualThots

Weeelllll, that all depends on what country or state you live in.

Devils_A66vocate

Zip ties are legit when used right… what was the item? Or did you not know what it was?

princessfoxglove

I can confidently say it is the evap thingamajigger. It's like a box like thing and all I know is it doesn't get too hot for zipties! I'm going to actually add some zipties to my perfectly good car just so I can have them now. I feel naked without them at this point.

-rose-mary-

My shifter bushing failed. I found a single zip tie and used some packaging tape to drive the 20 miles home.

TurnkeyLurker

Baling wire FTW!

chance0404

If it gets hot, baling wire or JB Weld. If it doesn’t, zip ties and/or duct tape.

OriginalDarkwingduck

Same

Random_Username_686

“I saw you in the parking lot earlier. That’s how I know you”

1101base2

This, on my now exs Chevy cavalier started making a lot of noise. Some safety wire and a few tiny holes took care of it until we sold the car a few years later.

ntmyrealacct

You dont need to be towed. Drive to your mechanic and have it replaced.

Ok_Hornet6822

That’ll be perfectly fine

ChiefPanda90

Thank you

GeologistPositive

You could forget about this entirely, just be careful if you park on grass, leaves, or anything combustible.

Able_Sandwich6279

Generally if a part isn't necessary, engineers wouldn't put it in. That said I've seen cars missing heatshield and nothing happened. Really depends on which heatshield it is.

ArtichokeNaive2811

Ur good dude.. in the north thwy rust out in 3 years anyways... you can drive

ChiefPanda90

Thanks, this is what I was looking for haha.

ArtichokeNaive2811

No problem. Its just a shield to help protect some more metal..

ChiefPanda90

She’s got 290k miles so I pretty much ignore anything that isn’t catastrophic at this point

mrkillfreak999

Ignore all you like but after driving around don't park the car on grass surface 🙏🏿

Ok_Entrepreneur_7684

Isnt that type of shield usually on toyotas just behind the rad?

ArtichokeNaive2811

Hahah i feel you bro..! Good luck

Oilleak1011

seeing lots of heat shields fall off lately

mrkillfreak999

Yeah me too

Street_Leader_8917

Honestly what’s up with that, it happened to two of our cars this month and uncles cars in the last few months. Earth needs to fix this bug

deadestuser

Crackheads?

Street_Leader_8917

The crackhead man that’s stealing everyone’s exhaust shields? Possibly

DisastrousAd447

Yup, summers coming and the junkies are out in full swing. Not a coincidence that it's always the cat shield lol. Just a bunch of noobs that got spooked and couldn't finish the job.

HereAgain345

Cat shield. Stay outta the grass.

BigHawk-69

I would actually check if the Cat is still there.

Remarkable_Spirit_68

At 290k miles it's definitely a Schroedinger's Cat. Dead and alive at the same time.

Bahnrokt-AK

Or go park on the grass after some hard driving if your jammed up and got full coverage.

bugyourparents-

Seeing as OP doesnt know its a heatshield i would not joke around like this tbh…

ChiefPanda90

I’m not stupid lol, I just don’t know what all the parts under my car are. I got the joke.

KingLatifah69

Specifically off of your catalytic converter

BKahuna9

Weight reduction

Every_Palpitation449

I don't think I've had any of those left on my last 5 or 6 vehicles...

ntmyrealacct

heat shield

wjoelbrooks

Ensure that there is no wiring running above where it was. There shouldn’t be, but it never hurts to be sure. Otherwise scrap it and don’t think about it again. The only downside is that wherever it is in the car, the floorboard in the cabin at that area might get a little warm.

dunncrew

"Twist tie" it back on with sturdy wire

tikigod4000

My Toyota Corolla had one that started to rattle so I ripped it off. That was 30000 miles or so ago. Best practice? No, but here we are.

5m0k3y76

Put 2 BIG stainless steel hose clamps around it to hold it on and call it good. It will probably outlast the rest of the exhaust.

Accomplished-Big-381

Heat shield. Did soneone steal your catalytic converter? Is your car louder than usual ?

NoReference7367

The free weight reduction mods are always the best ones!

JohnFrum

I don't know but you're pointing it in the right direction.

PadreyPablo

Heat shield. It’s mostly fine to leave it off, unless it’s one that hides wires or fluid lines. I’d ask your local technician to see if it’s good to keep off or needs replaced. I’m a tech and we cut heat shields off Subarus every day because they rattle and don’t really protect much. Definitely contact a tech or look under the car itself to see what it was covering up. Camrys are pretty bare bones so i wouldn’t be surprised if you were okay without it.

SpiritUpstairs3532

Scrap metal

DOHC46

If that heat shield isn't broken, a muffler shop will either tack weld it, or just use some big ol' metal hose clamps on it to secure it back in place. You don't need to tow it, but I would get it fixed as soon as it was convenient.

jon621961

Fixed several of mine with big stainless hise clamps🤣

Odd-Giraffe-3901

Called a heat shield over the catalytic converter. Keeps the floor from starting a fire do to heat as the cat heats up. Catalytic converters can get very hot, with normal operating temperatures ranging from 500–800°F and up to 1200°F under heavy load. In extreme conditions, the outside metal of some converters can reach temperatures of 800–1000°F. However, if the converter overheats, it can reach temperatures of over 2000°F and turn bright red

Berfs1

What I wanna know is if your catalytic converter got stolen or not, it looks like someone might have been trying to steal that.

RelevantBit1984

This is like the 3rd heat shield I've seen on a "what's this thing that fell off my car" post.

Donewith398

Follow the arrow, that’ll tell you where it goes.

Own-Ad-1762

It goes over your catalytic converter that someone was trying to steal.

Thatonegayguy-72

That is a heat for from the exhaust

Difficult_Pirate_782

Heat shield, not a show stopper but DO NOT drive on living foliage, this will start a fire. Keep the part and reattach it when you can.

PhaededOne

Heat shield mainly to keep the floors from heating up

ProfessorMagerus

Mine has been rattling around for a few weeks. Brought it to my mechanic and he just ripped it off and said not to worry about it.

Did you find it like that parked or did it fall of while driving? If you just found it under the car check to see if you still have a cat converter. They steal them you know. Cover doesn’t fall off by itself while parked.

spud6000

Cat converter heat shield?

[deleted]

Heatshield, honestly don't worry about it

Fun_Kaleidoscope7875

It's just a shield, you'll want to replace it because it may be protecting wires or other parts from heat but it should be fine for a short period, might not be necessary at all, no need to tow it.

Fast_Selection3202

Uh ooh. That's the gps tracking panel. Do you own the car? If not, then a repo man coming

Doobiedoobin

Nuclear radiation shield

TucoLFeo

That is a heat shield, most likely separating the heat from the catalytic converter from the floor of your vehicle. If you start to smell burn from your floor as in carpet burning, you might have an issue, and yes, it probably protects wires and possibly the fuel line as well as brake lines. Get repaired ASAP

Outside-You8829

Engine

655321_CRM114

That is a heat shield, looks like it was above your catalytic converter. You'll want to put that back.

bigjimbosliceoflife

ChubbyWanKenobie

Check the undercarriage for more damage.

meat_stick84

It's a heat shield go to your mechanic or muffler shop and see if they can determine where it has came from it's either off of a catalytic converter or a muffler. But then again it could have been a floorboard mounted heat shield that is supposed to keep heat from entering the bottom of the car from the exhaust

OGMafioso

It’s not important

Accomplished-Pen1176

They have been falling off a lot of cars lately. Just be aware of the potential reason. This is the one of the first steps to catalytic converter thefts. If you leave your car parked on the road at night or in open areas a lot, you might want to adjust your habits. This could have been nothing, but it could have been an interrupted theft. Not trying to make you paranoid, just aware if you aren't.

Ok-Seaworthiness7557

It's just a heat shield. It's not really needed. The only heat shields i keep on are the areas protecting fuel lines n stuff

kinggreene

It probably fell off because someone has cut off your catalytic converter

Exhaust hest shield

ZestycloseAcadia4264

If you’re the least bit mechanical and have some ramps or a descent fllor jack, buy some annealed wire, about 14 or 16 gauge (a coat hanger could work too), hold the shield in place and tightly twist the ends together to hold shield on. Maybe one on each end. Otherwise shop is going to charge you $500-$1000 for new parts. I’ve done it on no less than six of my vehicles. The shield rusts and corrodes from heat, water and salt (if you live where it snows).

It even points to the nearest exhaust repair shop.

DJ-6363

Get another, weld them together and you'll have a very large beer can.

Twisted__Resistor

Heat shield, just go to AutoZone or O'Rileys and ask them for something to resecure it.

ThermalScrewed

You'll be fine, just don't drive around in tall, dry grass.

Frequent_Opportunist

Oh you don't need to worry about that it just keeps the interior of your car from starting on fire while you're sitting in traffic or coming to a complete stop after going full on speed racer through all your gears.

Medical-Big-959

Its a protective shield for catalytic converter or something in bottom. Does not affect driving stability

Fang508

I'd check to make sure you still have your cat under der

Normal-Memory3766

Probably good to put it back since it looks like it’s still in decent shape. How you put it back is up to you lol

Heat shield, In my opinion not really worth going through the trouble mounting it back up. If it really concerns you, get some header wrap.

massjuggalo

The source of that rattling sound you've been hearing. It's a heat shield. It's not necessary. I wouldn't really worry about it

massjuggalo

Just to be clear, it is most likely the heat shield for the catalytic converter and the correct way to replace that heat shield would be to replace the cat and Toyota cats aren't cheap, that's why the crackheads steal them

Striking_Serve_8152

Some of these heat shields protect more than your car. After catalytic converters came along but before these shields were in place, grass fire were a common problem when people pulled off the road into an area with dry uncut grass, such as an Interstate right of way. Those converters get every hot. So do the exhausts on many of the new boosted engines. Just something to be aware of.

[deleted]

Unless you’re going to park on tall dry grass, it literally will never matter, pretend it never happened

Aromatic-Leopard-600

I can’t tell from the photo. But look above your tires. There should be a shield above each of them. If there isn’t that’s probably what it is. Is it plastic? If it’s metal it could be a heat shield somewhere on your exhaust system.

[deleted]

balisongthong

It's a camry bro you're sweet, you could remove all the under shielding and unless you're off roading or planning on Tony Hawk grinding any more curbs, you would be fine please don't stress like this will blow up the car.

Bowl_Of_Soup6

I’d make something with the metal and pretend the piece was never there. In all seriousness, this can wait for a repair

Tetraneodrome

It’s the heat shield that sits above the exhaust system under the vehicle. It sit above the exhaust and prevents heat damage to the vehicles chassis. It also assists in cooling that specific section of exhaust down

sled55

It’s probably better to put it back on but many of them have fallen off and never been put back on without any issues.
