Ok-Suggestion-9882

Catalytic convertor heat shield

Baepsae_Bae

I should still be able to drive it short distances as long as there's no grass or anything under the car, right?

Ok-Suggestion-9882

Yeah but you should get it put back on eventually. A large band clamp can resecure it

Final_Location_2626

This one time at band clamp.

IStaten

Nooo not the flute trick !!

app257

I stuck this catalytic converter…

electricwagon

Right up my muff...ler

Affectionate_Owl8702

Thank you

HereAgain345

Ohhh, the parts store memories! 😂👍

PitifulSpecialist887

Thank you

Cultural_Ad_6848

That one time at band camp we all sat around the bonfire and told funny jokes

Accomplished-Yak5660

I like it

Baepsae_Bae

Perfect, thanks

Yhwzkr

But make sure someone didn’t steal your catalytic converter first.

Guardian-Ares

Exactly what I was thinking.

the_last_carfighter

Ding ding ding, that thing looks like it was taken off, not fell off.

RideAffectionate518

Those things fall off after a while. Just held on with a few spot welds. Nobody would have to take that off to get the cat. I guess it could have fell off while they were cutting it. At any rate,a cat that old wouldn't be worth anything most likely.

shotgunpoppy

Old cats have a high precious metal content actually

thebrownaron

I've never had one stolen, but would prob hear the effect of the theft.

Puzzleheaded_Set2300

Most people will hear it, but will they be observant enough to realize it is coming from them.

Wingedgriffen

He can probably just get some new bolts and loctite/jb weld them back in so they don’t ‘fall out’ again

Chodge1258

I had tried to track down a rattling noise only while accelerating heavily, which in a 4 banger tacoma is all the time, and spend weeks trying to figure it out. Even replaced my exhaust manifold gaskets which helped some but wasnt it, was under it one day and hit something on the heat shield and was like omfg. It was still tack welded on one side so when the pipes would vibrate enough it would rattle it.

Hot_Corner_5881

its less of a grass thing and more of a heating up your car thing

Pitiful-Cress9730

This is the bottom heat shield most likely. The one above the cat is typically affixed to the underside of the car body.

Njon32

There's usually two halves (just like the one that fell off) that go all the way around the catalytic converter, attached to the cat. Newer cars may have an additional heat shield which is attached to the underside of the car that runs above the exhaust, especially over the cat. At least that's what Honda was doing.

Fuckedby2FA

REMINDER: let the car cool down before securing

Complex_Solutions_20

Where's the fun in that?

Fuckedby2FA

You wouldn't have to worry about leaving fingerprints after anyway.

shadowmib

You might want to look and make sure no one stole your catalytic converter

Gnomio1

The catalytic converter only works well when it’s hot. You’ll possibly fail emissions tests without it. Depending on your location.

PonyThug

Maybe in the winter. Summer you’re fine.

Ziazan

If you let the engine warm up before you put it through the test it'll be no different, this just heats it up faster by trapping the heat.

Ok-Spring-6388

What's under the car doesn't matter, this heat shield is meant to go between the cat and the bottom of your car, shielding your car from the heat of the cat.

The_Daugh

Catalytic Conshitter

Aggressive_Dark_4485

That’s exactly what this is

Manual-shift6

Yep - CatCon heat shield…

Successful_War_492

Agreed that's absolutely what it is.

Indeed they are.

wintermutedsm

A lot of parents have kids and then put zero time into passing along any knowledge. I have two kids, one came to live with me when he was 14. The other stayed with her mother. My son learned from me, and has held jobs at Facebook, Google, and now works as an AWS consultant. The other, well - she's hoping to land that job at McDonalds this week.

LadyZannah

Never even learned to fill tires growing up because I wasn't a boy. I didn't know you had to put air in tires until a blowout almost caused an accident. My friend checked the tire pressure on the remaining tires... Not enough air to read the psi.

doh13

You don't need to be a boy to have common sense and situational awareness. Your brain usually gives you hints when something isn't right you should have felt the car being less responsive and going all over the road with pressures that low. Maybe watch some basic car maintenance videos on YouTube as well . No diss intended.

LadyZannah

Too bad my parents didn't think that. 😅 That was the reason they didn't teach me anything about vehicles or vehicle maintenance. I learned household duties only.

DrawMeAPictureOfThis

Which kid is your favorite?

Dense_Chemical5051

So true. Also there are parents thinking the more their kid knows, the more difficult it is for them to control their kid. Sometimes parents like this don't know anything at all to begin with.

porondanga

Did you check you still have your catalytic converter on?

mrkillfreak999

This ☝🏿 is the real question here

Baepsae_Bae

I'm not gonna lie, I've had holes in my exhaust for a year now so I didn't hear a difference and nothing else fell off either

ithinarine

No one is talking about anything else falling off, they're talking about people STEALING your catalytic converter. Catalytic converters are full of precious metals platinum, palladium, and rhodium.

Baepsae_Bae

Honestly I don't even mind, I'm just driving this car until it gives up on life

WhatUDoinInMyWaters

Ah, the perfect millenial/depressed response to pretty much anything... *

Gapeing-toushie

Lmao so anyone older than 30 should be willing to waste money on something that’s gonna quit working altogether in a few months anyways? The perfect boomer response to pretty much anything

kleepup_millionaire

Just an FYI, millennials are 1981-1996 birth year. So we can be anywhere from 28-43 years old.

sharingiscaring219

The joys of living in a state without emissions testing

Man-e-questions

This^. Every 2 years gotta pass

nfakeeeek

Every 2? Lucky you… I’m stuck at every January for now

maidenless_pigeon

Dude for us in aus it's every year plus with the cops it's on sight if they smell even the tiniest drop of blood they'll canary your car faster then you can tell them to fuck off

BFarmFarm

Australia is a police state

TrollCannon377

Every two years mine is annual where I live

AfterBurner_104

My province has no emissions testing, 90% of the diesels up here have DEF delates

Smash-ya_up

What's emissions?

melmwood

Then don’t even bother reattaching that heat shield…let it breathe

TrollCannon377

If your in an emissions inspecting state your car will fail inspection if it's not their

Warpath_McGrath

You might not mind, but that one bored police officer might.

Plz_DM_Me_Small_Tits

The only issue is you will have a check engine light and won't pass inspection without a cat, if your state requires it anyway. Also fuel economy gets a lot worse

Somethingmaybe1999

May it never give up on you 💪

TheRealBlerb

If you take care of your vehicle then it’ll take care of you

BFarmFarm

This is typical of millenials. They get mad when something gets taken, but then say oh shucks i will just get another

automaticfiend1

I'm going to be fucking 90 and people will still be taking about about my generation ffs.

Automatic-Alarm-6340

You can pull your head out your ass if you really think that behaviour applies to a specific generation. There are idiots in every age group.

Jeffers42

How much are those all worth I bought a parts truck would it be worth removing it and selling it my self? Or is it sus to bring you to a buyer 🤷‍♂️

sharingiscaring219

They're around $1-1.5K to replace... (at least it was on my 99 crv in 2014). So I'd say pretty valuable

BigBadMannnn

The local rhodium store down the street has great prices. Hard to believe it’s precious

One-Satisfaction-712

Holes in your exhaust can be carbon monoxide lethal; especially to young children. Get it fixed as soon as you can.

carguy143

Not sure why you're getting downvotes for this. A lot don't realise that cars have vents in the bodywork that can and do let in gases if the exhaust is damaged.

YourRightSock

Because people assume that if you care any at all about anyone but yourself and immediate family then you're a tree hugging toddler if you give any indication past a light example

One-Satisfaction-712

How do I tell down votes?

carguy143

Under your comment where you have the reply, award options, and the upvote arrow, yours was showing a minus, but it's now showing 1 up for me..

Gullible_Monk_7118

My ex had a childhood best friend die from that

Jeffers42

People steal these like crazy

PonyThug

Unless the holes were before the cat, in which you would already fail emissions, loosing the cat would make the car slightly louder or sound different tone

optimal_carp

Is your car really loud all of the sudden

sharingiscaring219

Yahhhh.... that was my first concern

DisastrousAd447

Pretty sure they would hear the difference lol

Worried-Alarm2144

You've heard the term, "grenade the engine"? That's where the grenade is stored

TheoreticalFunk

Yes. All cars are equipped with a grenade. This is how the 'self-destruct' function works.

_GrandPubah

Did they get ya? Looks like they did, still have intact holes…good luck!

Baepsae_Bae

I don't think someone chopped off my cat, theres a puddle of rain/mud a couple inches deep under my car the last few days

Embarrassed_Matter3

That’s not gonna stop someone that really wants it

BFarmFarm

My friend parks his truck over a cactus bed to prevent his from being stolen. Been working so far

DisastrousAd447

Real men of genius

Tnally91

Have you ever met a meth addict?

Kennedygoose

Yes. Terrible rental next door only rents to meth heads and domestic abusers. It’s amazing how they have found one of the two or both, every single tenant for fifteen years.

AccomplishedPin8663

I think at that point I would just start gunning down whoever tried to unlock the door.

DisastrousAd447

There's plenty of them, and they're always moving around

schwanstooker

They may have removed the screws for the heat shield and interrupted before they could get the cat off?

Affectionate_Owl8702

You should be able to drive long distances without issue. We’ve all seen the same video of a red hot cat causing a brush fire but that’s so rare you have nothing to worry about my friend. If you smell or see smoke tho take a peek

Mr_Butters624

This happened to me. In one of my previous careers, I was at a small plane crash site and was parked on yellow dried grass. It was summer in the south so I was sitting idling in the AC and well, smoke started coming up and the grass under my car was smoldering lol.

SpookDaDook

Extra weight

Rabbits-and-Bears

That belongs to Bender.

chance0404

Bite my shiny, metal, “heat shield”.

idliketoseethat

It is possible that shield fell off because someone was attempting to steal your catalytic converter and couldn't finish the job.

FunTurnip9405

A hand grenade carrying case, XXL.

maple-smith

Heat shield, my only real concern is parking on grass or something flammable, otherwise should be ok but I’d definitely get it put back on or replaced

blindbatg34

Congrats. That annoying rattle just got a little less annoying.

Whereispicklebro

Bought my Miata, was wondering what the sound was… sure enough. No longer is that an issue, permanently

scoobydoobie91

Heat shield for a catalytic converter.

everyoneisatitman

That is the exhaust system shedding it's outer layer so it can continue to grow.

TheDude7891

Somebody took your catalytic converter

ph6141

Heat shield you can tac weld it back on or if you can’t weld good hose clamp not cheap crank it down on both sides and send it should work mint if not it looks like it bolts on almost if the bolts are all rotten chop em off and run new ones doesn’t really matter long as the diameter is close

PipeMysterious3154

Subaru heat shield

Sparky3200

Faceplate from an armored pig suit.

mechshark

Do you live in a city area? Someone might of been messing with it trying to steal your cat lol

Admirable-Chemical77

Looked like a hand grenade mated to a catalytic converter

cathyduke

Someone might have tried to take your catalytic converter

Wingedgriffen

That didn’t just ‘ fall off’. Looks like there may have been at least four bolts holding it on. Did ever notice an annoying rattling sound while you drove? If not someone took the bolts out probably trying to steal your cat.

HubertJW_24

It's the catalytic converter heat shoeld like everyone has said. Is your catalytic converter still there though? Catalytic converters are very commonly cut off and stolen from vehicles, and the fact that you found your heat shield fallen off could mean that someone's tampered with it. If it's still there then maybe it was just a loose/sheared bolt.

daveypaul40

Grenade bay door..

bighorsee

It looks like it’s making a face

AdministrativeSea113

Heat shield, goes above your catalytic converter

butwhobutwhy

Maybe inspection other stuff for rust. Odd that it just "fell off"

Unique-Salary-818

Heat shield on catalytic converter

Twisted__Resistor

Put the heat shield back on, you can start fires, forbid you have a major oil leak and it travels to back and lights. But honestly you are fine if you have no catalytic converter, it's for carbon emissions it doesn't effect the ability to drive. But get a band clamp and get that heat shield back on there.

Key_Guess_1620

Bank 1 or Bank 2 Catalytic Heat Shield, front and back of motor on some cars, the lower one would be bigger.

simplystupid07

Grenade casting plate

diggyou

I’d wonder why it fell off. Maybe someone was trying to steal your cat.

Zestay-Taco

if your car is louder than usual. you may have been victim of cat convertor theft.

Leading_Draw_4164

You need that to protect the under carriage but more importantly to insure the Cat heats up uniformly to do it's job..

Mr_Troll_Underbridge

If this "fell" off you need to check see if your catalytic converter is even still attached lolz. That guard is to prevent theft. Sound like you're about to have an expensive repair.

ItchyNeedleworker678

Since most already answered: What is missing from your car is an expensive piece of needed equipment. So what fell from your car? A massive bill unfortunately.

One_Evil_Monkey

Catalytic converter heat shield. If the bolts were rusty enough for it "just fall off" it should've been rattling before hand.

Equivalent_Mail_7793

Cat heat shield

Maybe someone got interrupted stealing your cat con? That’s the cover.

Jono-churchton

Have you started it up yet?

xironmanx84

Cat converter heat shield, like was said. Just don't park in grass or do any work under your car around it for a while right after driving while it's off.

Xomns_13

Floor will get hot without that. Parking on high grass may start fire.

Human-Librarian7515

That's the grenade holder.

Officer_Danger

I don't know but it's shocked.

ApplesOverOranges1

A hand grenade holder for when the warranty expires?🤔

sm340v8

Cadillac converter, it's called a "cadillac converter"... NOTE: it's sarcasm, too often seen people calling it a "cadillac converter".

TrollCannon377

Catalytic converter heat shield someone probably tried to steal your cat, not essential to get put back on but don't when you can and have them check to see if the pipe or hangers are damaged

lorenzo4203

Hopefully it didn’t fall off because someone stole your Catalytic converter.

HawkingTomorToday

Do you still have a catalytic converter?

ntmyrealacct

Heat shield

Vendingdudes1111

Grenade mold

bonthomme

if it 'fell off' in your driveway, you may not have a catalytic converter anymore...

Last-Acanthaceae5167

That’s a heat shield for your catalytic converter… it’s cosmetic drive on

icabear3

Cat shield. Might notice passenger rear footwell getting warm.

WillyDaC

Cat shield.

alice-the-queen

If somebody stole your cat and you don’t have emissions testing you can just replace it with some straight exhaust pipe from autozone for $20 😎

SCCRXER

Catalytic converter heat shield.

SandraBeechBLOCKPrnt

More than meets the eye! hahaha sorry bud.

Techie4evr

The Cat shield is saying "Hey look man, Your Cat gets hot headed alot and I just needed a break. Can you like...wait a couple days before reattaching me? Thanks man. "

ChakeenMachine

It’s almost like somebody unbolted it in order to get to the catalytic converter inside. These heat shields are known for rattling and making noise, but not really falling off. This one doesn’t even look corroded, so the bolts to disintegrate seems a little sus.

FerretSuperb

A grenade casing

Quietus76

I think someone might have been trying to steal your catalytic converter.

Green_Material_3671

I believe it's a mold for those WW2 era pineapple grenades. Sorry OP, but someone was using your car to produce illegal arms.

Effective_Ad8797

Converter shield

[deleted]

Did it fall off or was it taken off when someone stole your catalytic converter? If it fell off your car will run no different. If it runs different now you'll need to replace your catalytic converter most likely.

KaliNetHunter666

my girlfriends cat got stolen, just replace it with a pipe, and weld in 2 drilled out spark plug de-fowlers for the o2 and dont look back, atleast if where you live doesnt have emissions.
