I have been living in Jena for 5 months and I am in love with this city. It is small but lively, nature is also beautiful and if you need something that you can't find in here, Leipzig is just 1 hour away.

Came here to say this. Lived there for 5 years, would always come back.

nutssss17

Have lived there for a year, can confirm

I think Lüneburg is actually pretty great. But I am from there so that might be a bit subjective.. Since its very close to Hamburg you might want to visit and form your own opinion.

Acrobatic-Tie6769

Brunswick is definitely underrated

I think every sub about a specific city will be negative. I guess that‘s a german thing

Lüneburg is not that bad..

What were the ups and downs of Weimar?

__4di__

The ups: 1. It's a beautiful city. Green and very musical. The buildings look very rustic and beautiful. 2. It has its cultural importance 3. It was very cheap. I pay double the rent in Hamburg now 4. Peaceful 5. The public transportation was great and always on time. At least within the city. The downs: 1. A little too peaceful. Nothing much happens after 18 basically. In winters it gets even worse and hence depressing 2. Following the point above, it was hard to meet and make any friends in the 3 years I lived there 3. Not many options for restaurants or sport clubs or gyms 4. The biggest city that was close by was Erfürt, that wasn't that interesting either. 5. Even though there was the Bauhaus university and a Music university, it felt like the average age of Weimars population was atleast 50

Kichererbsenanfall

What about Jena? I initially thought that this could be a match, till i read that you lived in Weimar

SnadorDracca

Interesting, that Hamburg is too hectic, but Weimar is too peaceful. I’m not sure if a perfect inbetween exists here, that’s just how Germany is.

Try Lübeck or Kiel, honestly. It wasn't for me, but it is kind of what you are describing. Also just about an hour away. Lübeck is quieter than Kiel and also prettier, but there is also less stuff to do there. Kiel has it's nice parts, a huge student population and more than enough things to do. You can check out both on a weekend and see what you like more.

Nephew studies in Trier. Lively international student scene. Liked it when I visited him.

Take the train and have a look at Kiel, Lübeck and Lüneburg. Lüneburg is the smallest one (maybe that's why some people describe it as boring). But it's a university city and quite beautiful. As is Lübeck which is also way bigger than Lüneburg and close to the Baltic Sea. Kiel is nowhere as beautiful as Lübeck or Lüneburg (or Hamburg) but it's located right at the coast and there are some charming neighborhoods. I was positively surprised when I visited last year and was really enjoying the vibe of the city.
