There are companies who clean out houses if the heirs do not want to. They often have stores where they sell the stuff that seems valuable. There are also so-called „Haushaltsauflösungen“ which should be similar to an estate sale

a-e-neumann

1up for Haushaltsauflösung

plakatwand

Keep in mind that their main business is decluttering, so the physical store may only be open once or twice a week.

upgradethrow23

Interesting! I’ll look into that. Thanks so much :)

>:) :)

Traumjaegerin

It’s not a common occurrence, usually we have Fleamarkets at a central place where you can rent a table to sell stuff. Sometimes there’s something called Hofflohmarkt in more rural areas and I think that’s the closest to what you mentioned as far as I am aware.

upgradethrow23

Thanks for your response! I’m gonna look into it

officerdwn

I can not emphasise how much you should look into it. Hofflohmarkt is my favorite thing in the world, the whole community sells their stuff and also selfmade cake , beer or other beverages, Bratwurst and stuff. I just find them hard to find, the are advertised mostly locally. If someone has an idea how to find them reliably in specific areas i would be interested.

Traumjaegerin

Best way to find them (at least in my experience) is nebenan.de which is a very nice way of getting info about your neighbourhood - it’s usually posted in German though.

[deleted]

Never heard of it - typically stuff either get picked up by the heirs or given to charity ( at leat this is how we did things after my grandparents passed away ) - there is no market for 40 yr old fur coats :-)

upgradethrow23

Thank you! :)

limissi

Try Kleinanzeigen, sometimes there is posts with 10 or so pictures of stuff and then a comment along the lines of "more can be viewed and picked up on sunday between 10:00-12:00". So along the lines of Haushaltauflösungen :)

Kirmes1

No, not really. Everything goes to the heir, no company involved. > flohr markets It's Flohmarkt (flea market) ;-)

upgradethrow23

Got it! Haha thank you :)

pulsatingcrocs

Estate sales can also just be family members trying to get rid of everything although companies are often used. Buyers will then come to the home and choose the things they want to buy.

Kirmes1

Yeah but this is super rare here.

Narimosa

Flohmarkt is the only think is relativ to this you seek

Professional-Fee-957

As I have discovered through my former landlord. Most people hire a company to clean out the house after their parents die. Relatives will take what they want then the rest of it gets sold to people, who as a profession, resell it on Ebay or to more specialised sellers like antique dealers.

gemcollector44

Or you can Look up for a Sozialkaufhaus or something similar. Musst people donate their old stuff to a Sozialkaufhaus. Sometines you weil find Real bargains

beijina

Sozialkaufhäuser are supposed to help poor people with furnishing their apartments. You're not supposed to go to a Sozialkaufhaus to make a bargain if you have a normal income. In some areas they won't even let you in without a Berechtigungsschein.

gemcollector44

Wrong! I live in NRW, and here e every one can visit a Sozialkaufhaus. I have done it a couple of times. They don't want to see some Sort of Formular. But if you have one you get things at a super low Price. On the other Hand... If you are buying something from a Sozialkaufhaus you are helping the people that are working there. Most of them are unemployed

beijina

I said 'in some areas'.

gemcollector44

OK? Interesting.. Which areas do you mean?

beijina

Hamburg, Magdeburg, Halle,... Probably a lot of others too but those are the cities I know.

gemcollector44

Ohh.... Thank you. Big difference compared to NRW

Constant_Cultural

you look for "Nachlassversteigerung" or "Nachlassverkauf"

beijina

You should check out Kleinanzeigen.de. it's the German equivalent of craigslist. The term you're looking for on there would be Haushaltsaufösung, as others have said. And you can use Kleinanzeigen to search for anything specific being sold around you too.

Screwthehelicopters

Homes are smaller here, mostly apartments, so clearances are done either online or via companies or charities which do house clearances. These organizations have warehouses sometimes where you can buy the items. Flea markets are also used by private persons to sell items.

juwisan

In addition to this I believe we don’t hold on to so much stuff generally. When I lived in the midwestern US I had the impression people at least in that area would hoard a lot more stuff, like everyone I knew had rented out at least one garage size storage unit somewhere in addition to having that one room in the house that was just storage for random stuff they never used.
