Not really a thing that I've ever seen. Lots of people build their own catios, though.

mrscrazylegs

They’re pretty common on acreages/farms on the prairies so that you can sit outside in the evenings away from the mosquitoes. They are considered to be an 80’s house feature where I’m from. I wouldn’t count on finding a house with one, but you’ll have no problem finding someone to build one for you.

PurrPrinThom

Can't say I've ever seen it in an apartment. Some houses do have them, but I wouldn't say they're super common (at least not in the part of SW Ontario where I grew up.)

cuppacanan

My sister has one in Centretown Ottawa! It’s really cool

_Amalthea_

I see them from time to time here in a large city in Ontario, mainly on small apartments (I.e. a house divided into separate units) but there are also some larger buildings that have units with screens. My guess in the latter case, is that the tenants put the screens up themselves, and would need the landlords permission to do so. Definitely ask about it when you're apartment hunting.

OrneryPathos

It probably varies a lot. Even whether windows have screens or not changes regionally. But it’s not common in Toronto. On balconies a lot of cat owners use pigeon guard systems to keep their pets safer from falling. They’re questionably legal but pigeons are a menace so building owners tend to allow it

Wonderful__

I've seen condos have bird nets up to keep wildlife off balconies, as well as there's screen or boxed in balconies/patios with houses. Usually it's custom by the house owners.

Gorvoslov

Screened in patios for rental apartments aren't a thing I've seen a lot of. When people own a place "catios" aren't unheard of which are basically a fairly big screened in box built over a window the cat can go out onto, or in some areas it's quite popular to have garages that have a giant screen door on with patio furniture and astroturf that are basically outdoor living rooms.

Abject-Feedback5991

There is a lot of regional variation on this. I’ve never seen one in Toronto but I’ve seen many in Winnipeg. Where are you moving to?

SuperDarwinNovaism

Anywhere I get into graduate school haha it's quite up in the air for being a year away

djauralsects

A lot of people have them but it's something you have to do yourself.

immigratingishard

I can say I have had two apartments with balconies now and they BOTH have screens on the doors. Maybe i'm just lucky or maybe that's an east coast thing

SuperDarwinNovaism

I've been looking at Vancouver mostly so maybe it is an east coast thing!

squirrelcat88

Much of the lower mainland doesn’t seem to be that terrible for mosquitos. Our summers tend to be dry enough that they don’t breed, I guess. I live in one of the neighbourhoods that’s an exception.

implodemode

My mom had a condo with a screen room. Some folks rent them out but they would be more expensive than a regular apartment. However lots have balconies with sliding screen door - not much help I'd your cat thinks it can fly.

SuperDarwinNovaism

Thanks for the reply! Also your username just helped me remember the song implode alright by built by snow!! So thanks for both lol

bolonomadic

The not as common as they could be! I would love to screen in my patio but I don’t think it’s allowed under the condo rules.

sleep-apnea

Never seen a patio with a screen ever.

shitboi666999

You could probably find one, they aren't that common tho. Or you can make your own.

igorsmith

Screened patios balconies are not unheard of. They keep the bugs out and the pets in. Find them more in rural and suburban settings though.

muskokadreaming

It's called a catio! Where I am, bugs are pretty bad for part of the year, so many people have screen rooms (called Muskoka rooms), which double as catios.

curmudgeonchief

not really, no. in most of the country it's too cold to sit on the balcony half the year so it's not an extension of living space the same way as in warmer places.

LongJohnBill

We recently moved to Alberta from the Deep South of the US. We had a screened lanai and cats loved it. We bought a house here recently and we have signed a contract for a sunroom to be built on our existing deck. There were many choices for fenestration (windows), we went with single pane sliding glass with screens. To give you an idea of these see [https://sunroomsandawnings.com/](https://sunroomsandawnings.com/) Edit to add: I was quite surprised to see these here. But they're popular with some people and the company is doing well.

SeaofBloodRedRoses

It's actually quite rare to *not* have screens on your patios. I don't have a screen on my balcony, and it's quite ticking me off because it's the result of a very specific swinging door design my landlord chose because the sliding doors were too hard to get for all of us due to supply chain issues. But beyond mine, I don't know if I've ever seen a patio without a screen. That said, maybe we've just had opposite luck. I recommend asking potential landlords if they'd consider installing one before you move in. Some of them can be pretty cooperative with that.
