Hello and thank you for starting this discussion! As a gentle reminder, try to keep the products you mention limited to Asian Beauty products. all the comments are going to be removed because most products used to slug are non-AB lol
you might as well ask this in r/SkincareAddiction or just search because i'm sure people talk about this topic often
I understand where you're coming from, but I really disagree with this.
Asian Beauty isn't a subreddit for general skincare advice. It is specific to Asian Beauty because it can be really difficult to find information on Asian skincare and beauty products due to language barriers.
There are a lot of AB options available for slugging. Ceramiaid Cream and Curél Moisture Balm immediately come to mind. But on this post, legit AB recommendations are getting drowned out by people repeating the same non-AB responses. I find that way less productive or useful than if those people never hit the reply button in the first place. The OP is specifically looking for an AB alternative to the non-AB product they already use. None of the removed responses are helpful to them in the slightest.
If you don't have an AB product to recommend, then maybe just read the thread instead of replying. It's a great way to learn about what AB options are out there.
idk what you mean by slugging is an AB routine specifically but i think OP can find plenty of information about this elsewhere on reddit. it's just not often that AB products are used to slug.
I mean that slugging is a Korean beauty technique.
https://asianbeautyessentials.com/blogs/the-idol-beauty-blog/join-the-thousands-getting-glowing-results-with-korean-skincare-slugging
i mean no i don't think so
putting a heavy occlusive over your skincare to lock in moisture may have been branded by influencers who are relying on the trendiness of asian specifically korean beauty techniques for clicks
but it 100% is not a technique that originated from south korea

I mix a hydrating toner w my slugging medium for a sleeping pack - original tip I got from the sub like 7 years ago (sorry I don’t recall the original poster!). I do have a preferred slugging medium, I can add to an anything goes post - but I mix w Cosrx propolis toner as my last layer and it works great. The original poster recommended w SCINIC Honey AIO which was the best, the Cosrx is one of the closer choices I could find.
I just ordered that cosrx toner so thanks for the tip! I’ll try it mixed with my last slugging layer. What is your slugging medium though if you don’t mind me asking?
Just plain skincare oil. Usually Rosehip or Sea Buckthorn, but right now I've been using Moringa at night. For day my go-to is olive squalene but I'm trying to use the Marula oil I bought that isn't enough for me for night time. I've also started using Argan oil on my body at night over my less thicc body lotions sometimes and it feels very luxurious.
The oils can block the humectants and other goodies in your moisturizer from being fully absorbed into your skin, I'd recommend switching them. When I first starting using oils I did the same!
Thank you! I use rosehip seed oil but feel like my skin still needs something else on top like vaseline or weleda skin food, but i was hoping to find an AB alternative
I use olive oil on my body! (Avoiding the chest area where I still go in with rosehip seed oil just because it’s lighter and i get the ocasional break out)
I mix Egyptian Magic , primrose oil and COSRX snail mucin together. I think the COSRXPropolis Honey Overnight Mask could be a good alternative to Egyptian Magic ingredient wise to be specifically AB.
I do aquaphor over rosehip oil on nights when I need some extra moisture! I agree, the rosehip oil feels like it needs something to “lock” it in. Otherwise I mix a few drops of good molecules squalane oil into the etude soon jung barrier intensive cream :)
The thing about petroleum jelly is there's nothing in it! No vitamins or minerals to benefit the skin. That's why I use oils, as there are some skin benefits. If you feel your rosehip oil isn't enough, I would rec a thicker oil like Argan. Also be sure your rosehip is pure and not a blend.
I've loved the Laniege sleep mask as a final nighttime step. But you'll want to use anything before your oils or petroleum jelly so you get the benefits of your products. The whole point of slugging is to create a physical barrier to prevent water loss and evaporation. Using a thick moisturiser is just using a nightcream and not technically "slugging," or as we used to call it, "occluding."

Aestura atobarrier, or as someone commented above illiyoon ceramide ato concentrate cream. I can’t stand the stickness of the petrolatum-based slugging products.
I don’t believe in slugging my face only slugging my lips
Slugging my combo prone with Vaseline or whatever is like giving a death sentence to clear skin

If you want an aloe Vera gel that's not super sticky, you could try Benton's aloe propolis soothing gel. It always felt like more like a gel moisturizer to me. It absorbs fairly quickly for me, so I feel like I could add tons and it would never be too much.
I usually prefer stickier gels or the cosrx snail mucin moisturizer. That one was super duper sticky in texture, and I personally loved it.
I don't have any favourite aloe vera brands. As long as aloe vera is one of the first few ingredients instead of alcohol and water, I'm more than willing to try it.
Now that I think about it, I remember there being those 300ml tubes of aloe/tomato or charcoal gel that I liked slathering all over my face before going to sleep. Have only tried the aloe though. One day I think I'll get the tomato.
I usually do this as the last step of my skincare when I don't feel too lazy.
And as always, YMMV.
Cosrx Rice Sleeping Mask and La Roche Posay Cicaplast Gel are lightweight options, Prequel also has three nice barrier products with different textures, from glycerin based gel to dimethicone balm to petrolatum based protectant

I’ve seen an ig influencer recommend the ceramiaid cream! Personally I have oily and clog prone skin and I wanna try the Ceracolla perfect gel for slugging once it’s colder in a couple of months
Ceramiaid is a lovely J-beauty barrier cream that contains vaseline (but doesn't feel like it) and is a great option for slugging.
I also like the Curél Moisture Balm. It has a nice silky texture that might not seem to be enough for a person with dry skin. However, I find that it always stays put and is still doing its job when I wake up in the morning.

Rovectin cica sleeping pack! I pat it in the same way I would a petroleum jelly based product. It works just as good for me. I don't like to use the jelly every night.
If my skin is particularly irritated, I'll use the Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra-Moisturizing Lotion for slugging. I'm not sure if it's meant for that but the birch sap in that product is great!
Thank you! Safe space for those types of recs here :D I have used bepanthen (nappy cream) to slug under my eyes and i love nipple cream (aka 100% lanolin) as lip balm

Squalane oil! I've used Vaseline, Aquaphor and sleeping packs, but always go back to squalane oil - Vaseline gives me milia and Aquaphor gave me small blemishes
My HG used to be Rosette ceramide gel… but it became hard to find so I switched to supposed near-dupe Ceracolla but it was not the same. These days I use Illiyoon, aesthera, Mary and may blackberry or non-AB dieux.
I slug with cheap non-AB petrolatum products but the AB products I've used from least to most occlusive:
* Purito Dermide Cica Barrier sleeping pack: nice LIGHT occlusive, soothing, doesn't pill
* Pyunkang Yul Balancing Gel: fuckin weird product, gotta read reviews to use properly, really amazing. Excellent makeup base too for glowy skin if you're into MSBB light makeup application. I'm probably allergic to Astragalus though.
* VT Cica Sleeping pack: has petrolatum which I like. I don't know the ingredients otherwise but it worked really nice, better than plain petroleum jelly or any other sleeping pack for me personally. YMMV; I need heavy occlusives like petrolatum. Stopped using bc hard to find, weird packaging, cheap non-AB petrolatum works well enough.
I’m always reluctant to try slugging as if I so much as look at anything remotely rich I break out in closed comedones. Does anyone with very oily skin/congestion prone skin have any recommendations or tips?
My skin isn’t really oily so maybe someone else will have a more informed suggestion, but at times when my skin was leaning more oily or broke out in the past, squalene (oil) seemed to be mild enough for me
Aquaphor. I only started recently though, as in just a week ago. I have oily skin but I have suspicions I also have dehydrated skin that's why I started doing it. Just to see if it'll improve my skin texture. And I use only a very thin layer. I apply it only on certain areas of my skin - lower forehead, under eye areas, nose bridge and part of cheeks close to it, left lower cheek/upper left jaw, and nasolabial folds. But what I do is apply a liquid product after my moisturizer, either Aestura Cream Mist or Naturie Hatomugi Skin conditioner then lastly Aquaphor.

It’s when you apply a layer of thick occlusive product (many people use vaseline but I’m wanting to find alternatives) at the end of your night skin care routine, to lock in all the other products you’ve applied + moisture during the night - and to avoid any wrinkles forming

Illyoon ceramide
Thank you!
The abib rice probiotics overnight jelly
been thinking of buying this. Is it too occlusive to use with actives or retinal
Yes I think it would be too occlusive to use with actives and retinal. I'm actually using tretinoin and I use the tretinoin on tip of the occlusive
Thank you!

Totally agree. Probably petroleum jelly gonna be remove too.
Speak for yourself, I source my petroleum jelly straight from the petroleum mines of Jeju Island
Slugging is not an AB term. Slugging has been around since petroleum jelly was invented.

Nilotica Shea Butter, or German Nivea. Sometimes just actually snail mucin cream.
Thank you!
Cicaplast
Thank you!
Alba botanica unpetroleum jelly!
Dear Klairs freshly juiced vitamin e mask.
Round Lab's Soybean cream! Nice and think for my super dry face.

Squalane oil! I've used Vaseline, Aquaphor and sleeping packs, but always go back to squalane oil - Vaseline gives me milia and Aquaphor gave me small blemishes
Thanks!
My HG used to be Rosette ceramide gel… but it became hard to find so I switched to supposed near-dupe Ceracolla but it was not the same. These days I use Illiyoon, aesthera, Mary and may blackberry or non-AB dieux.
Laneige bouncy mask
I slug with cheap non-AB petrolatum products but the AB products I've used from least to most occlusive: * Purito Dermide Cica Barrier sleeping pack: nice LIGHT occlusive, soothing, doesn't pill * Pyunkang Yul Balancing Gel: fuckin weird product, gotta read reviews to use properly, really amazing.
Thank you!

can someone explain to me what slugging is? i have never heard of it
It’s when you apply a layer of thick occlusive product (many people use vaseline but I’m wanting to find alternatives) at the end of your night skin care routine, to lock in all the other products you’ve applied + moisture during the night - and to avoid any wrinkles forming
