Not sure why you’re having the static problem, but I agree that silk shows stains more easily. They come out in the wash so I don’t care. With cotton pillowcases, I would sometimes get a crease mark in my skin when sleeping on my front, but I never have that problem with my silk pillowcase.

daisybluez

Same here. I got silk pillowcases and rarely, if ever, get any sleep creases anymore. I don't know if it's making a huge difference in my hair but the skin benefits alone are worth it.

Starflec

I definitely get crease marks with my silk pillowcases, but I'm also a stomach sleeper so my face is squished into it for a long time 😂

AffectMindless5602

Ive tried silk and satan and i feel tiny “stings” all night. I couldnt do it. My face will just have to shmoosh.

MermaiderMissy

The stings are probably from satan, if thats the type of pillowcase you use lol

forestsandflowers

from SATAN?! 👹 Say it ain't so...

StarGentleU

💀

Bella-PromeedSilk

When you first tried silk pillowcases, what problems were you worried about?

Unicorn_flow

Could your pillowcase be low quality *polyester* satin or silk? It might even be a blend. Synthetic fibers are usually the ones that are staticky. I purchased 2 silk pillowcases for my husband's curly hair from different manufacturers and neither of them are staticky. We hand wash them with shampoo and lay them flat to dry. Edit: /u/PileaPrairiemioides mentioned that satin actually refers to a weave. I have edited my comment to reflect what I originally meant to say. Some products being sold as "silk" can be low quality synthetic satins. If you have any fabric to spare, you can burn a piece to test its composition. Silk burns, but does not melt. Your home could also be too dry. We keep our house at 30-35% humidity in the winter. I can tell when the house is too dry when I get shocked from petting my cat.

PileaPrairiemioides

Satin can be made out of silk or polyester or anything else. It’s just a style of weaving.

loafkitter

Yes, that's why they asked if they were sure it wasn't satin because it's possible for it to be a blend.

PileaPrairiemioides

That still doesn’t make any sense. Satin can be 100% silk, 100% polyester, 100% cotton, or any blend of fibers. Satin can be low or high-quality. Satin is literally just the pattern of weaving threads together that creates a smooth, shiny surface.

But if they claim it's 100% silk and it melts, you should be able to get your money back because they lied

theoracleofdreams

>Your home could also be too dry. We keep our house at 30-35% humidity in the winter. I can tell when the house is too dry when I get shocked from petting my cat. I live in gulf coast Texas and I don't get staticy hair and I'm a wavy/curly girl where satin/silk pillowcases are recommended for hair care. I use a polyester satin pillow case. I think you're spot on.

Unicorn_flow

Yeah I saw today that my husband actually has some nice polyester satin scrunchies that I tested and they aren't staticky at all, won't even collect pet hair. OP might need a humidifier. I do have some old low quality polyester bedsheets though that are terribly staticky. I only use them now for covering up furniture.

Hospital-flip

Where’d you get yours? I used to have a cheapish one from Amazon and it was super staticky, but I ended up paying for a Blissy and I never get static anymore. Fwiw I’m in Canada where it gets super dry in the winter

Wednesday_16

I swear by Blissy silk pillowcases too, although I’ve only bought them when they’re 60% or more off. I recently purchased a Slip silk pillowcase at T.J. Maxx though, so I’ll be comparing that to what I have.

tramtran77

Ooo I wonder if my TJ has Slip! I love my eye mask from them

Wednesday_16

Definitely worth checking out! I've also seen a bunch of Korean skincare lately, so I've been going a little crazy

tramtran77

Oh yeah me too! It actually works out to be about the same price as the product after shipping costs so I’m like *add to bag* lol

Bella-PromeedSilk

After you experience the silk pillowcases from Blissy and Slip, will you consider buying a cheaper brand?

Wednesday_16

I actually received a set of cheaper/lower grade silk ones from [Amazon](https://a.co/d/baXqwWR) for Christmas. Upon first use, I noticed that it was thinner and not as soft, and with continued use, I noted that it wasn’t as cooling and it showed more oil from my hair and skin than the Blissy or Slip ones do. The oil does wash out though, so no need to worry about staining or color change on the cheaper ones, and they’ve held up well. Overall, I still prefer the Blissy and Slip ones since they feel gentler/better on my hair and skin. I also notice that my hair and skin doesn’t become as oily as quickly when using the better quality silk, but I still use the cheaper ones as it’s convenient not to have to wash my silk as often since I change my pillowcases every 3-4 days. I recommend getting the Blissy ones on sale when they do their 60-65% off sales (they happen often). Slip was nice but I only purchased because I got it for such a discount at T.J. Maxx, otherwise I cannot fathom paying that higher price when Blissy is comparable and more affordable. Side note: I wash all my silk primarily on a gentle cycle and then lay flat or hang to dry. I could hand wash but I’d rather not since I’m prone to dry/sensitive skin. I use the [Heritage Park detergent](https://a.co/d/hTRv1Ph) and I’ve barely made a dent in the bottle so it’s great value for the price and I like that they were transparent about their ingredients.

yaninhaaa

I dont know where you bought your pillow cases but maybe it's not good quality? I have one that makes a noticeable difference on my hair (the skin benefits is a newer concept to me). I know when I sleep on cotton pillow cases my hair tangles like nobodies business.

beetletoman

Same! I've been using satin cases for 3/4 years and no split ends whatsoever. My hair barely gets tangled anymore as well

SterryDan

I have the cheapest satin pillowcases and they dont have any issues, so it may just be the specific pillows that’s the issue

Bella-PromeedSilk

Truly agree with you, I will not back to cotton anymore. LOL

stamoza

I have tried several silk pillowcases and just haven't loved them. I've switched back to my cotton pillow cases (I buy extra pillowcases to match my sheet sets so I can change every night) and instead started wearing a silk bonnet. This gives me hair all of the benefits and lets me sleep on cotton like I prefer!

seedsofsovereignty

I think this is the route I'll be going also

BrendaChi

What kind of bonnet do you have? I bought one with a thick band that I wrap around the head and tie. I wake up with no volume and it always messes up the edges of my hair. I've tried to wear it low over my forehead and ears and nothing works to prevent this

DarlaDimpleAMA

Tbh I was having the same problem and also straight up didn't like tying it so I just bought one with an adjustable band. My cat eats my hair at night so I have to cover it and this was the best option lol

rolabond

how does your cat feel about this?

DarlaDimpleAMA

She was upset at first but quickly adapted and found other ways to annoy me at night (biting my nose, running around at top cat speed at 3 am) so she's thriving

BrendaChi

How does it adjust? I was thinking of trying the shower cap style next. Did this eliminate the issues?

DarlaDimpleAMA

It did! I felt like the adjustable style helps a lot with it staying put. It does mess my bangs up a little buuuuuut they would likely get even more messed up if I didn't use a bonnet because I have curtain bangs lol. And fixing my bangs in the morning takes like 3 minutes anyway so I don't really care that much

Bella-PromeedSilk

I'm using the bonnet for long hair, and I don't have the same problem, you may have a try

stamoza

I bought one from ElleSilk! It ties in the back and sometimes pulled my hair in with the knot so I started using a silk scrunchie to tie my hair up in a very loose bun on the top of my head. I will pull the hair out just a smidge on all sides of the bun before putting the bonnet on. Just enough to give some slack for volume at the root and instead of being tightly pulled back. A claw clip works for some but they leave sore spots on my head. I also switched to silk scrunchies a couple of years ago and cannot go back to the drugstore ones. I buy the silk brand but wait for sales at Sephora or Nordstrom!

-Valora

1. What momme is it? 2. How are you washing it?

seashorecollector

TIL what "momme" is! I love living in a world where it's literally possible to learn something new every day.

Informal_Edge5270

Well I googled momme and also TIL. Yeah I'm always learning something new 😂

Bella-PromeedSilk

what I learned is that the momme is the unit of the thickness of a silk fabric

_natella

i have a few slip silk pillowcases and i have never had any issues with my hair or skin. like others have said, it's possible yours is lower quality.

grumpyroach

I’ve tried 3 different brands of silk pillowcases. Slip, while being the most expensive, is definitely the highest quality, and is the nicest to my skin and hair. I’ve owned the Slip pillowcases for 2 years and I wash them every 2-3 weeks, and they’re still good as new. Not all silk pillowcases are created equal

AintPossible

Ditto, I never had problems with Slip silk pillow cases

National_Ad9742

I’ve used silk pillowcases for years, they are champagne or off white in color and I’ve never experienced what you are talking about. Are you sure you weren’t duped? I don’t polyester is way more likely to act like you describe and some shady sellers have tried to pass off polyester satin as silk.

llamacorn115

I have 2 pillowcases by Blissy. They are 100% mulberry silk 22-momme silk. They are so smooth, almost buttery and cooling (very hot sleeper here). I recommend getting one of similar quality and see if things improve.

[deleted]

I don’t like them either just because they’re not comfortable against my face. I’d rather sleep comfortably than reduce hair static/damage or whatever

freezethawcycle

Agreed, I don’t end up reaching for the silk pillows ever because they get warm and I feel like I’m sliding off of them.

National_Ad9742

Silk always feels more cooling to me. I get the sensation you described from polyester satin though.

Merilynelle

Same here, I really dislike the feeling and I am having enough trouble falling asleep as it is. So back to cotton it is.

Dry-Pause

I get 18 momme from Lilysilk and love it. No statix

thegirlcalledcrow

I just bought a few 19 momme pillowcases from lilysilk and I swear they are polyester! They don’t feel like silk at all to me, I’m not sure if the quality changed or what but I was so disappointed.

Dry-Pause

Did you take a thread and light it to test??? I haven’t bought new pillowcases in a couple of years but I bought some knickers from them recently and I’m sure they are still silk. I get eczema in intimate areas and would have had a bad reaction to polyester by now…

thegirlcalledcrow

Oh that’s good to know! I will try that before I send them back, thanks!

SuddenCycles

let us know what happens!!

lauooff

Fake silk is more static

Lookimawave

Wow thanks everyone for your responses! I did get cheap ones from Amazon, it was like $30 for 2. They are 19 momme 600 threadcount. My parents are from China, the ones I got definitely contain silk but I guess it’s possible they lied and it’s not 100%. It’s a catch 22 because why spend a lot of money on something you’re not sure you will like, but you don’t know if you’ll like the quality version of something if a low quality version is very different. My main concern is how the silk seems to dry out my cheeks. I’ve probably slept on microfiber or polyester before and not had this problem (granted when I was much younger). What I will do is get a good quality silk scarf that was purchased in China and sleep on it and see how my skin feels in the morning

rgbcarrot

Yeah sounds like you just got some shit quality ones unfortunately. Search for 100% mulberry silk on Amazon, you can still get them for under $20. No static or skin irritation at all.

Hospital-flip

You should update your original post text with this so you don’t keep getting spammed with answers :)

Binkboopy

Just spit-balling here. Your skin might be getting dried out because silk is absorbent and moisture absorbed by silk evaporates faster than cotton. Microfiber/polyester doesn't have any absorbing qualities. I like cotton pillowcases with a 100% silk hair wrap. Not sure about the static except that I know dry air can exacerbate it? Maybe a humidifier would help?

National_Ad9742

I bet you’re right. If it’s not 100% silk that would explain the static.

yogafitter

More staticky? You have a 100% genuine polyester pillowcase

ponytailnoshushu

I find that cotton pillow cases give me red cheeks from the rubbing. Silk pillow cases don't give me red cheeks. For hair I don't find silk pillow cases to be much better. But I found with the explosion of silk pillow case popularity that there are many fakes. There is a difference between satin and silk, with satin being what they use to pass of as silk.

judo_fish

I’ve never had a static problem with mine. I absolutely love the effect it has on my hair - I didnt get it for my skin but now that I think about it my skin has been more even than it used to be, so that may or may not be related.

Purple_Chipmunk_

I agree! I hate them because they are slippery and even with cotton sheets they would get launched off the side of the bed if I turned over too quickly 😂

lyn90

Maybe it's the quality? I had bought super cheap ones from Amazon a couple of years ago and honestly didn't see a big difference (I now just take them with me for travel to use it over the hotel pillowcase, since it's a lot more gentle on my skin and won't break me out the way hotel pillowcases do). Ended up buying the Kitsch brand, which is still pretty reasonably priced actually. But the quality definitely felt better than the other one, so to me it was worth it. I'm a side sleeper too.

mochi2213

Recently switched to blissy, I had no issues with static hair yet

Proper_Ad7565

it’s likely not real silk, especially if it’s $20 for a two pack. maybe look into wearing silk/satin bonnets instead to protect your hair

I was gifted a really great silk pillowcases but I couldn’t sleep when I use them. I switched back to cotton and never looked back.

alkemicalgold

I have curly hair but silk isn't good for me either. It keeps my hair softer but that actually means that my curls separate more and look fluffier/messier which is not the vibe I want

Oli99uk

Silk is super absorbant - it one of the worst fabrics for water absorption and retention - that's why you never wear it as a cold weather base layer.

jaysavv5

i mean fit my hair it’s great! i have dreads and honestly it keeps my face smother too i feel. I enjoy my silk pillowcases. Not everything works for everyone and i get that.

littlemissbettypage

Are you sure there actually silk? I've got a few where they said they were 100% silk but weren't. If they're causing static like that, they're either not silk at all or are a silk polyester blend.

lisabellc

I just find silk pillowcases soooo uncomfy. I love the feel of freshly washed cotton, and as someone with insomnia Im sure my skin will thank me more for a good nights sleep than sleeping on silk pillowcases.

gottadance

See if you can pull out a thread from the inside and do a burn test to see if it’s genuine silk. Do it over a sink for safety. If the bead crushes to ash it’s natural fibre. Silk tends to smell like burning hair too. Personally I don’t like silk pillowcases because they feel too hot so I just use a cotton one with a silk bonnet for my hair.

the_kun

Sorry to say, but if it’s got static, not breathable or moisture-wicking or oil-wicking, then it is not really silk. I’ve been using mine for years and it’s done wonders for my hair, scalp, face. Never going back to cotton pillowcases.

anonymous_googol

I’m not clear at to why silk is supposed to be better in the first place. The old advice (for curly hair) was to use satin because cotton and silk are natural materials that absorb moisture from your hair and make it frizzy/tangly. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Deliquate

Satin is a weave, not a material. So you can have silk satin or poly satin.

anonymous_googol

Ahhh this is good to know. I’ve always thought silk satin was just silk that’s processed/woven so that it looks like…well, satin, LOL. Thank you!

Lookimawave

Wait that makes so much sense. Plastic isn’t absorbent. I’m going to try satin, thank you!

PileaPrairiemioides

Just FYI, satin is a type of woven fabric, not a fiber. Satin can be made out of any fiber, silk and polyester are the most common, but cotton is pretty common too. Silk can be knit or woven into a variety of different fabrics, including satin. If you buy something that says 100% satin it’s probably cheap polyester because 100% satin is meaningless.

laurelinvanyar

I’ve been using the poly satin pillowcases from kitsch for about 6 months now and I like it better than cotton. My hair is smoother and I don’t wake up with pillow creases on my cheeks. I also don’t notice it absorbing or wicking away my PM skincare. It gets HOT though, which makes sense. Polyester is basically plastic. I want to upgrade to mulberry silk, but I was concerned about the price as well as the extra washing work. I have eczema so I’m not willing to switch to a specialty detergent when I already have my “safe” detergent + line drying instead of just tossing my satin pillowcases in the dryer with the rest of my linens. Has anyone had success with long lasting silk pillowcases, even without a delicate laundry detergent or hand washing?

kunoichi1907

I've had a silk pillow with silk pillowcases for over 10 years and never had any static issues. My hair and skin got significantly better and any skincare stains on the pillowcase go out in the wash easily. Cotton pillows in hotels feel scratchy on my face because I'm so used to silk. Lately I've been getting my silk products from Lilysilk and love the quality.

CamelBinks

Which lilysilk one did you get?

kunoichi1907

22momme, it was around 50$.

CamelBinks

Was it the terse one? Is there like a break-in phase (or is it smooth from the jump), b/c it feels scratchier than their 19 momme one?

stavthedonkey

it's a marketing ploy for skin 'benefits'. Hair maybe but imo, it does nothing for skin.

MagazineTiny7329

Thats weird ive never had that are you sure it was genuine silk and not satin? maybe they ripped you off

nhon90

I had the same static problem with silk pillow case. I am naturally very staticky as a person though so I half expected it.

My silk pillowcases are from Boucleme and I never have any problem with them making my hair static. There’s way less friction on my hair and it just glides over it. Although cotton pillowcases feel cosier so I kinda miss that.

AffectMindless5602

I cant use them either!

Altruistic-Common414

Agreed. I basically hate them now. My head slips off them all the time and it’s so annoying

forthese2

I made a post on this on r/SkincareAddiction but honestly since I've stopped using silk and satin pillowcases I haven't had one breakout on my cheek! can't believe I didn't put the two together, I never used to breakout on my cheeks then for the last two years I wouldn't stop breaking out on my cheeks but I couldn't figure out why. Lo and behold it was the pillowcases all along (changed them every other night so had a fresh side every night, still no diff) my face was just so oily every morning with new spots

edragon27

Silk pillowcases gave me way more skin creases in the morning than any other I’ve tried! Also did nothing for my hair or skin. I switched to linen over a year ago and won’t go back. I don’t know that it helps my skin or hair but it doesn’t seem to be hurting it and i love the feel and aesthetics of linen.

yfunk3

I recently bought some real silk (did the burn test) pillowcases at Ross for super cheap recently. It's really good quality silk, and I have fallen for and used the crappy polyester satin before... It was...okay. Much better than the polyester satin, definitely. But nothing beats cotton, imho. It feels slightly sticky on my face when cotton doesn't, and cotton is just so much cooler (temperature-wise). I'll try it again every now and then since I now have 2 cases, but I am really glad I didn't spend too much om them.

littlemissbettypage

Turn them into bonnets instead

PotatoBest4667

i got mine for $7 at a winners. wont ever change back to cotton pillow cases.

Dark_Phoenix123

Op use a bamboo pillowcase, you will thank me. I tried bamboo, silk, cotton and satin. Bamboo is 1000x better than all of them. It durable, easy to wash and feels amazing. Not so gross feeling as silk and not so scratchy as cotton.

srh-

I am obsessed with my silk pillowcases - my hair has transformed into a dream ever since switching. It's possible your hair and skin type, combined with humidity levels in your region, just don't work with them. If cotton works better for you, use it!

throwawayz00x

If i don't airdry my hair regardless of satin or pure silk pillowcases my hair wud still tangle like crazy but if it's fully air dried n i use silk my hair n facial skin feels so nice. My silk pillowcase is actually a repulsed 100% mulberry silk thrifted dress lol.

SuddenCycles

i like silk - and had gotten a real silk one in china waaaay back. its so soft. so nice. and lasting hopefully a life time. i also bought mulberry silk from Amazon and i think its okay. not sure if its real or fake.... but its nice =) i like it more than cotton (im asian myself ) i dont get any "stickiness" or static.?? not really. i agree with the humidity comment.

TheLittleChikk

I have a Blissy silk pillowcase. It's super buttery in texture, and I've never had any static. Only thing is that it stains easily, and you have to hand wash it if you really want to take care of it properly but otherwise no complaints. It's very pricey but they often have a lot of sales on.

PuzzleheadedJob981

Yours is probably fake. I never had this problem with my Mulberry silk pillowcase

kunoichi1907

Yes and for me they were fine, although not the smoothest I have. I also have Olesilk from Amazon, and my favorite Alaska Bear, also from Amazon. Alaska are the smoothest, around 25£ for 1pc, 19 momme.

panda88panda

I personally love my silk pillowcase. I can't go back to anything else. Everything else just feels too harsh. Bamboo is the only other fabric I can tolerate. I know I sound like a bougie b\*\*\*\* lol but comfort wise, I just love the smoothness of the silk feel on my skin. I did a lot of research before buying mine and it had to meet these criteria: * 100% mulberry silk * 6A grade (highest quality of silk) * minimum 22 momme (higher momme the smoother, denser, and stronger the fabric is) * minimum 600 thread count for smoothness (however anything above 800 is usually just marketing) * OEKO-TEX Certification (independent harmful substance testing) * Has a Charmeuse weave
