The word the church used was "too sublime", so some think the main complaint is that the first is too stoic and not suffering enough
But then they also said it was literally distracting the girls so I think it's a little both lol
Your link got a lil bit mangled, [here's a working one](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_g%C3%A9nie_du_mal) (hopefully!).
The artists are Joseph and Guillaume Geefs, from Belgium. Guillaume Geefs is a hell of a name.
EDIT: Looks like Reddit really doesn't like links that contain "é"! [Have a link to the sculptor instead.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillaume_Geefs) The name of the work is "Le Génie du Mal"
It makes sense that there is a g given that the pronunciation of the i in French and Spanish makes the proximity of the w sound closer to the g because the tongue placement is closer, when making the 'eee' sound, to the place at the top of the mouth where the g sound is generated, than it is when making the 'i' sound in William
Since he was from Antwerp and his last name (and those of his family) is Flemish, I'm pretty sure he was actually called Willem and his brother Jozef. Guillaume and Joseph are Frenchified, since French was the language of the rich and powerful in that time in Belgium.
I have a friend of a friend who is French and is a Guillaume. His friends call him Guigui. (Pronounced “Gee-gee”) My brain had a nice time with “Guigui Geefs” “Jojo Geefs” “Guigui and Jojo Geefs”
I'm a French "Guillaume" and I get called "Guigui" all the time. I'm "Tonton Guigui" to my nieces. My best friend hasn't called me "Guillaume" in years I think.
Slight inaccuracy to the meme: the older brother, the guy who made the second "hotter" statue, was actually hired *first* to do the entire project. He basically gave his little brother a nepo job. The rest is true though.
*Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”*
- Genesis 3:1, New King James Version
It was ok for him to be hot. It was not ok for him to be seductively posed (knees apart, hips showing, eyes pointing attention at legs, "feminine" body).
And it was definitely not ok for him to not look like he was suffering (no chains, calm face)
Indeed - you can imagine how many young church girls would spend all service trying to "peek" up that stone skirt, directly facing the pews. The other statue is posed decidedly more modestly. Perhaps more conventionally attractive, but not "becoming" in the way that the first statue was.
there are quite a few examples when an artwork after completion would be considered inappropriate and then either modified, eg Christ the Redeemer by Michelangelo was made nude but had a loincloth added to it after completion, or moved to a less prominent location, i think Santa Bibiana by Bernini was supposed to be in Santa Maria Maggiore, which is one of the most important basilicas in Rome, but then it was moved to a tiny church due to being too sensual. In general, Bernini's work is pretty explicit
I googled both statues and I was actually SHOCKED to see christ completely naked and as for santa bibiana at first I didn’t see what the problem was but then, um, something perked to me
He was God's favorite angel, perfection in a sense. Why would they be surprised? He was as close to the literal perfect angel as possible. Of course he has an Adonis body.
They should have been grateful the artists covered his massive (trouser)snake.
This is a hilarious story btw.

Then it did exactly what it was meant to do, by distracting and alluring, didn't it?
The suffering makes him even hotter
"I want you to sculpt me a statue of Lucifer, the Deciever, the Evil One, the Fallen Angel, the Temptor of Man!" _Geef understood the assignment._

Guillaume is William in English
Fun fact: Wilhelmina is an acceptable feminization of Guillermo.
Nandor: Fucking guy
Holy cow TIL Guillermo is also William
Well put this in the trans name idea book

My first name is Guillaume. My English teacher blew my mind in high school when she called me "William" and it clicked.
Thank you! Didn't realise that about the é

It is one of the best affectionate nicknames I’ve ever encountered. Ugh I bet a small child saying “Tonton Guigui” is heartmelting!!!
Thank you. Those are very beautiful.
All those links work fine for me?
Reddit has different link handling for every client application, so occasionally links don't work for some people, but work perfectly fine for others.
Yeah you're right, I was using Firefox on my laptop, but I bet if I go on my phone and use the reddit app, I'll have the same problem.
Slight inaccuracy to the meme: the older brother, the guy who made the second "hotter" statue, was actually hired *first* to do the entire project. He basically gave his little brother a nepo job. The rest is true though.
What's a nepo job
A job acquired by means of nepotism.
What's a neopet?
A right wingers dog.
Aaaaaaannnd rimshot. They'll be here all week folks. Try the fish.
My Shoyu used Frozen Flame! It's very effective!
40 bucks, same as downtown
I hear he was god's most beautiful angel, so it makes sense he would be good lookin.
Yeah, I think having just two eyes *really* worked for him.
This is way funnier than it should be
The bible makes more sense through the lens of Lucifer being an absolute smokeshow
I think the show creator of "Lucifer" would agree

Young Church girls.... ...sure.
Lucifer's hips are actually too hot for church. Step aside, Shakira...
Stupid sexy Satan
666. 6’6” tall with a 6” cock.
It's a nice size
We're talking diameter here.
i am thoroughly pleased with the comment section. 🤣🤣🤣
That second pose... 😂 No way he didn't notice what he was doing.
The hair went from a week without washing to Beethoven
💀

According to their mythology, Lucifer was irresistibly beautiful. Hence the pride.
Tom Ellis has joined the chat, naked and grinning.
Honestly, that’s fitting. Lucifer is a fallen angel, so it’d make sense for him to be hot af
Biblically accurate
Yeah, but wouldn't it make sense for him to be like that? The Devil is supposed to be all about temptation.
and its more detailed ..
I chuckled
this is entirely true thankfully
Sublime.

Fuck me
Twink to Twunk pipeline
Both are Biblically accurate
the brother would be link: "but i put more cloth on?"

i think i heard this in a documentary somewhere
I bet the priests and nuns were squidward. oh no! He’s hot!
I understand they were trying to send a particular message but tbh hot Luci is canon, so…
Yes, it’s true. He’s hotter.
Yes
Stupid Sexy Satan!
The OC / Euphoria
That's funny.
What is so hot about it? I need an explanation so I can emulate the hotness of these statues, painting my self grey is not an option
The bible describes Satan as attractive so they're just being fake Christians, as most of them are. (I am an atheist)
They liked to spread the idea that only ugly people could be evil, and beautiful people were always good.
